"As working from home stretches to months rather than weeks, leaders find themselves planning for and communicating about longer time horizons while working from home and communicating with their teams who are also working from home. This week, I’m revisiting and building upon a piece of advice that my colleague Wayne Turmel shared in an episode we recorded in March of this year – When You Suddenly Find Yourself Leading Remotely. The specific issue is the need for more intentionality in a remote work world."

Using assertive communication can help your to communicate more clearly and completely, and it has a risk. It’s possible to try to communicate assertively and slip over the line in to aggressive, jerk-like communication. In this episode, I’ll share three key principles (and two bonus principles) to help you strike the balance between being too passive and too aggressive.

Last week, I lead a training session for new and aspiring leaders, and some of our discussion reminded me of an issue that many leaders – especially front-line leaders – confront on a regular basis. Front-line leaders frequently deal with changes, policies, and procedures that they did not create. These issues create constraints on what you can do in your leadership role, and it’s tempting to both focus on and get frustrated by these limitations – to focus on what you cannot do. In this episode, I’m proposing a way to look at these constraints so that they don’t drive you crazy.

When you are in a leadership role, you will have conversations where you are discussing other people’s behaviors, words, approaches to work, and results. Eventually, you will need to help the other person find a way to improve in at least one of these areas, and you will be tempted to offer a suggestion for improvement. Be very careful in this moment. Even with the best of intentions, trying to help another person improve can quickly backfire on you. This week, we’ll take a look at this situation and I’ll offer some strategies on navigating it more successfully.

In any conversation where there is a potential for disagreement, it’s tempting to try to force – strongarm – the other person in to compliance or agreement. While that sometimes works, it’s not generally the best way to gain agreement and cooperation. It’s generally better to disarm the other person – to take away the issues that might cause a confrontation – than to strongarm – to use force to “make” the other person do what you want done. In this episode, I’ll share a specific example of where and how this idea applied.

When you disagree with another person's perspective, solution, or opinion, a very natural approach is to simply disagree. And, that approach rarely wins their heart and mind. Most people thrive in environments where there are more positive experiences than negative experiences, and it can be difficult to create that type of environment at work. While learning to say “No” is a useful and powerful leadership skill, it can be the end of a conversation. In prior episodes I have talked about Providing Context When You Share Data and Learning to Speak Accurately. In this episode, I'm looking at the idea of speaking accurately from a slightly different angle. This perspective is more about the intent of the data presentation than about the facts of it. Last week, I discussed speaking accurately. This week, I'll explore accuracy on the other side of communication - listening. Just as speaking accurately moves you towards greater clarity and buy-in, listening accurately moves you towards mutual understanding and trust. When you learn to listen accurately, you can maintain the emotional control needed to respond appropriately without over OR under reacting.

As a society, we are now well in to the first shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. While I can't foretell the future exactly, it appears that it could happen again before the pandemic runs its course. So, we need to develop skills to help us manage close, long-term contact with the same people day-in and day-out. Learning to recognize, control, and short-circuit transferred aggression is one of those skills.

Leaders frequently need to communicate data in the form of numbers. When you're working with a team of people who know the context you operate in, those numbers probably make sense. But... What if they don't? What if you're communicating data to a person outside your team? What if you're communicating data from outside your team to your team? Does the person or the people with whom you're communicating understand the context of the data? Or, is it just a jumble of numbers with no real connection to the hearer's experience? These are questions to address when you need to communicate data to other people.

As we confront the stresses and pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic and what we must do to adjust, it's easy to commingle our personal wishes and desires about the way we wish things were with the actual demands of the environment in which we operate. When we commingle these issues, we tend to demand things from others that are personal wishes rather than business demands. In this episode, we'll explore how that can damage leadership communication and what you can do to avoid this trap.

As we look forward to next year, many people reflect on the past and set goals for the future. This time of year can lead to focusing on specific time frames like the first quarter or the next year. This finite approach can be useful for improving personal and business results, and it is different from how we should approach leadership communication. The goal of leadership communication is more about winning the relationship to get results than it is about winning the point in the moment.
