Dark Horse Month continues both at Multiversity and here on the show, as the lads welcome writer Samuel Teer to the underground recording studio for some talk about his debut Dark Horse OGN VEDA: Assembly Required with Hyeondo Park and Kelly Fitzpatrick. The story of a young orphan girl growing up in an automated factory drew inspiration from sources as varied as Pixar and Kipling’s The Jungle Book, but this comic for all ages certainly brings its own virtues to bear. Teer talks about the process of getting the book to Dark Horse and what happened after its own assembly. What’s it like for a first-time writer to have their debut OGN released by a major publisher? What went right…or wrong? Gremlins feature prominently in VEDA the story, but did Teer and company escape their shenanigans completely? Find out all that and more on this week’s episode!

Returning to the show today after a nearly eight-year absence is comics writer Samuel Teer. His new book, Brownstone, about a teenage girl connecting with her Latin heritage and her estranged father without speaking a word of each other’s language as they renovate the title structure, hits shelves on June 11th. The road from his last OGN, 2015’s Veda: Assembly Required and this one is the topic for today’s conversation. Samuel & Greg talk about collaboration, the differences between the two different markets for this thing we call comix, the importance of context, breakout panels, ominous texts, and a detailed look into the relationship between a comics creative and the agent (or agents) they pair up with to help bring their ideas to market.

- Luc Bossé, cartoonist of Gary, King of the Pick-Up Artists and publisher of Pow Pow Press,
- Thom, cartoonist of such Pow Pow works as VII, Casa Rodeo and the upcoming Botanica Drama, and
- returning guest François Vigneault, a cartoonist whose Pow Pow work includes the French language edition of his sci-fi classic Titan, but is here today in his capacity as Pow Pow’s Marketing Manager.
As you can probably guess, the running theme here is Pow Pow. More specifically, Editions Pow Pow, a Montreal-based publisher with the goal of spreading the work of Quebec cartoonists to bookshelves of French- or English-speaking readers across the globe. Pow Pow came to our attention thru Francois, but it KEPT out attention with books like the ones previously mentioned, but also Cathon’s The Pineapples of Wrath, Sophie Bedard’s Lonely Boys, and Éloïse Marseille’s Naked: The Confessions of a Normal Woman.
The goal of today’s chat is to be nothing less than the best English-language primer on Pow Pow – how it came to be, what it is, and where it’s going.

That is because we are only looking at one thing- The Eternals, the 2021 film from the House of Mouse. It was the movie that broke many of their MCU habits. After all, would anyone risk breaking Covid-19 quarantine to see this movie in a crowded theater? Apparently some would, because this movie wasn’t a total bomb at the box office. But is it any good? That’s what the episode is trying to sort out.
Truly the end is near! Judgment Day awaits… and so does the end of our “Eternals” project. If you have been diligently keeping up, there’s just one series left to read. Next time we’ll be considering Kieron Gillen’s run on the Eternals, most of it drawn by the incomparable Esad Ribic. The issues include “Eternals” (vol. 5) #1–12, as well as the “Thanos Rises” “Celestia,” & “The Heretic” One-Shots. And then onto the “Judgment Day” crossover. It’s a lot of issues, so we may cover them in two halves, one for the series proper and one for the event. Are you ready?

They may be from two different generations of the industry, but make no mistake: these guys are of one mind when it comes to making great comics. After a bit of a hiccup with our recording platform it’s time for the final regular episode of “One Piece Club,” our ongoing catch-up of “One Piece,” and the Multiversity Manga Club in general. We’ve had a great time covering ongoing Shonen Jump, various finished and/or non-Viz series, and, of course, “One Piece,” and are humbled that anyone would take time out of their day to listen to us. We even “enjoyed” reviewing the Netflix Death Note for you. But enough of that — in this month’s episode we cover chapters 1033-1057, the fourth of four episodes covering Wano’s third act, and the sixth Wano episode overall. To say it was a long arc is an understatement. Quite a bit happens here, but probably the main event is the secret history of the Gum-Gum Fruit and the appearance of Gear Five. And with that, we’re done with the most recent completed arc. Thanks again for listening, and we may be back as future arcs conclude!

The fourth proper volume of “Eternals” came out in 2008. We took a look at “Eternals” #1-9 and Annual #1, which you can find those collected in “Eternals,” Vol. 1: To Slay a God (#1-6) and Vol. 2: Manifest Destiny (#7-9, Annual #1). It’s not much longer now, we’re almost caught up to the present day.
Next time, we enter the wasteland of “Eternals” conflict. They don’t get another eponymous comic until the Kieron Gillen run. We decided to bridge that gap with a handful of issues.
We will definitely be reading “Hulk” (vol 2.) #49 from May 2012; “Thor: The Deviants Saga” #1–5 from February 2012 – May 2012; Avengers (vol. 8) #4 from September 2018; “Eternals Forever” One-shot from 2021; and “Symbiote Spider-Man Crossroads” #4-5 from 2021.
We will also be trying to track down “Silver Surfer Annual” #1 (1988), “FF Unlimited” #10, and “Incredible Hercules” #116. There’s are more tangentially related, but easy enough to track down and read.
Finally, we may briefly discuss a couple of issues that are really removed from the “Eternals” series proper, but we won’t be covering those in as much depth. These comics include the original “Atlantis Attacks,” the original “Contest of Champions,” the “Real Heroes” #1 Pizza Hut comic, “Quasar” #51-58, “Fall of the Hulks: Alpha” #1 (2009), “All New Invaders” #3-5 (2014) and “All New Invaders” #13.

Today’s guest is writer, game designer, editor, and graphic designer Eric Trautmann. While his previous comics work has included such titles as DC’s Checkmate with Greg Rucka, Flash Gordon: Zeitgeist with Alex Ross, Red Sonja, Vampirella, and the Vertigo OGN Shooters with co-writer Brandon Jerwa and artist Steve Lieber, he’s on the show today to talk about his new Image Comics series The Forged. Drawn by Mike Henderson, colored by Nolan Woodard, lettered by Ariana Maher, and co-written by the aforementioned Greg Rucka, The Forged has been described by Rucka as “an over-the-top pulp adventure of sex, violence, and sci-fi inspired by Conan, Heavy Metal, and those other comics you tried to hide from your parents.”
Greg gets a chance to chat with Eric about the series, its inspiration, the nature of pulp fiction in today’s market, his background in roleplaying games (specifically the Star Wars license of the early 1990’s), his collaborations with a wide variety of creators, how to make an evil dinosaur scientist’s handwriting look real, and much more!

Today’s guest is not only a man of his times, but several others as well. When he’s not re-enacting 17th century English civil warfare, he’s spreading the gospel of 2000AD, the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, as the now-Brand Manager of Rebellion/2000AD. But it’s his role as author of the new book I AM THE LAW: How Judge Dredd Predicted Our Future that brings him back to the show today. The book melds comics history with political, social, and policing scholarship to us how a comic series started in the 20th century about a lawman in the 22nd century is still showing us what we have to look forward to (and hopefully avoid) in the 21st century. It deserves to be on both college syllabi and fan bookshelves for years to come.
Nearly ten years after he helped the lads set up the Multiver-City One column that still goes strong each and every week, Michael Molcher sits down to chat with Greg about the book and all things Dredd, the surrealism of promoting his own work, the brilliance of cover artist Pye Parr, and just what the hell a Brand Manager does.

We started with some classic 90s “Heroes for Hire” (Vol. 1) #4-7 (from November 1997 – January 1998) and then we read the bombastic “New Eternals: Apocalypse Now” (also known as Eternals: The New Breed) #1 (from February 2000.) This is around the place where Marvel creators lose track of continuity. That means some pretty wild swings. Not all of them connect.
Next time is more “Eternals,” but with a more classic reading selection. We are reading Eternals (vol. 3) #1–7 by Neil Gaiman and John Romita Jr. We will also have a brief discussion about Chuck Austen’s Marvel MAX Eternals story, but you don’t have to worry about tracking that one down.

It’s the middle of the month, so it’s time for “One Piece Club,” our ongoing catch-up of “One Piece!” In this month’s episode we cover chapters 1008-1032, the third of four episodes covering Wano’s third act. There are lots of battles in this month’s selection, and most of them are good! In this episode we speculate a bit about Zolo’s past, discuss Sanji’s overall character arc, and learn about some very interesting and definitely real dinosaur facts. Plus: a big announcement about the podcast! We’ll be back in a month or so to finally wrap up this arc with chapters 1033-1057. Sierra Barnes is a cartoonist whose work combines such varied influences as history, folk lore, mythology, fascism, anti-fascism, war, and foxes that might not actually be foxes. Her webcomic exploration of these topics, Hans Vogel is Dead, was just announced as having its first volume of strips collected with updated content by the folks over at Dark Horse Comics. She uses her degrees in History and German Studies, as well as an MFA in Comics from California College of the Arts, to bring to every page Hans Vogel’s death to life.
Greg sits down with Sierra to talk about the long road in getting Hans Vogel out of her head and on to the screen and page, the differences between mythology, folklore, and history, how she learned to stop worrying and love the art of lettering comics, what tales scarred her for life, her take on the age-old question “Walt Disney: Threat or Menace?”, and much more!

On today’s episode, Greg shares a panel discussion he moderated for last year’s HeroesCon featuring two comic book legends: Larry Hama and Carl Potts! Plotting the backgrounds of these two gentlemen on a Venn diagram would almost give you a single circle, as they are both Asian-American cartoonists with military backgrounds (Hama served in the Army while Potts grew up in a Navy household) who not only worked as editors for Marvel Comics during the 80’s, they would both account for a large part of that publisher’s non-spandex output, as well as mentor enough Hall of Fame talent during their tenures to field at least one sports team. As the HeroesCon program guide puts it:
From GI JOE to ALIEN LEGION, THE ‘NAM to THE PUNISHER, CONAN to LAST OF THE DRAGONS – LARRY HAMA and CARL POTTS have a combined count of more guns, swords, bombs, lasers, and explosions per career comics page than anyone else in the field. They also helped launch an entire Hall of Fame of comics creators’ careers (Jim Lee, Mike Mignola, etc.). Moderator GREG MATIASEVICH (MULTIVERSITY COMICS) gets these two legendary editors/creators talking about their careers and how they changed comics forever!

There’s no good way to find these issues outside of bargain bins, digital comics sellers, and Marvel Unlimited! Gotta love this weird, weird era.
For the curious though, you can find “Avengers” #308-310 & “Marvel Spotlight” #35 in “Avengers” by John Byrne Omnibus, “Avengers” #361 & “Marvel Spotlight” #35 in “Eternals” Cosmic Origins,” and “Eternals: Herod Factor in “Eternals: The Complete Saga” Omnibus. As far as I, Elias, can tell, “Avengers” #374 & 375 are the only ones to have never been reprinted.

Welcome Back to Mine Multiversity: A Marvel Podcast! Each episode we’ll be looking at Marvel books, old and new! We discuss fun Marvel comics, Marvel news, Marvel history, and it’s once again that special time, where we talk about a whole dang year of Marvel.
Make Mine Multiversity is a twice-monthly podcast that premieres on the first and third Friday of every month. Last year we theorized what the new Jonathan Hickman Marvel book might be. This year, we find ourselves doing the same thing!

The Eternals are forever, that’s kind of the point of them (but will anyone care?) This week’s episode takes a look back at the year in Marvel. The MCU may feel like it’s going off the rails, but there are still some fun comics, even beyond the world of “X-Men.” Find out which comics we think we’ll find ourselves returning to again and again.
We also have our annual predictions bet, where we try and guess at what’s going to happen with Marvel stories across media. The movies have felt like the center of Marvel for so long, but maybe 2023 is the year that changes. Did this year teach us to love crossover events? Is there hope for the future of Marvel video games? Are there romance options in Marvel: Midnight Suns? (There are on AO3.)
Next time, we return to the huge mega Eternals read, and it’s the last time the issues will be easy to find for a good long while. We are reading Eternals (vol. 2) issues #1–12, a limited series that ran from October 1985 – September 1986. It’s collected as the second half of “The Dreaming Celestial Saga,” and you can also find the story on Marvel Unlimited and Hoopla Digital.
And we’re still not over our new theme, “Excelsior,” and it’s composer Carol Romo!

When thinking about today’s guest, the word one would keep coming back to is “buzz”, like the hum of a amplifier just turned on and waiting for its first power chord. His work refuses to stay in any one medium, be it prose, comics, podcasts, or music. His latest work is the second half of his comic Serious Creatures, looking at the life of a teenage special effects wizard. He has all the right cultural touchstones in his work to stand out from the crowd to me, and his art is vibrant, kinetic, and as bursting at the seams as his creative pursuits would indicate. He is Tony McMillen, and on this episode he chats with Greg about his work, the challenges of dealing in analogues, the hirsute Rob Bottin, collaboration with others, the genius of John Carpenter, and a lot more.

Today’s episode presents a chat Greg had towards the end of last year with editor/author Robert Greenberger. The list of Bob’s credits is both long and distinguished, including almost 20 years as an editor at DC Comics overseeing such titles as Doom Patrol, Suicide Squad, Who’s Who, Crisis on Infinite Earths, Atlantis Chronicles, and guiding the comics voyages of the Starship Enterprise during its DC publishing stint. He was also the founding editor of Comics Scene, a Starlog sister magazine of comics fandom from the 80s that provided a pre-Internet audience access to comics news and interviews. And when he’s not teaching high school English or moderating convention panels, Bob is a prolific prose writer & editor in his own right.
Bob graciously let Greg pepper him with questions about most of his comics career, expounding on such topics as the secret origin of Grant Morrison’s Doom Patrol run, how comics collections are put together, balancing creativity versus productivity in comics, the best freelancer lateness excuse he ever heard, the nuts & bolts of how comics are published at the Big Two level, and much more!

Edo Brenes writes and draws “Memories from Limón,” a graphic novel from Nobrow (2022), a journey back into hometown memory and history in a Costa Rican town, discovering family stories and secrets. We consider the storytelling power of following the protagonist, Ramiro, as he discovers this past through conversations with relatives over a trove of old photographs.
Then, at 23:00, we look at Olivia Stephens’ “Artie and the Wolf Moon” (Graphic Universe/Lerner, 2021), about an adolescent girl who discovers her family heritage… not through photographs but through finding out they’re WEREWOLVES! This middle grade/YA graphic novel richly depicts the freedom of running through the woods as a family of benevolent werewolves, as well as the joys and hazards of adolescence in the social world of malevolent teenagers (and vampires!).
