After a few years of exploring textural ambient guitar across several albums and EPs (including the 2024 LP Tracing Back The Stream), these new recordings mark a point of departure for Telekaster. This time I was co-working with drummer Danny Rico (Steaming Satellites, DRiP), setting out to explore groove-infused territory – always melodic, always elegant and packaged in an emotional band sound. So Telekaster takes a dive into Neo-Kraut, Cosmic Music and Ambient Jazz, the latter highlighted on the track Lichtung, which features the saxophone talents of Philipp Hager aka Schweben (one half of German avant-rock-duo Zement) in a beautiful collaborational effort. The follow-up release to Telekaster’s deeply elaborated and meticulously crafted Tracing Back The Stream LP (released in March 2024) is a five-track meditation with electric guitar, effects and guitar synthesis. The respective variations were improvised around one theme and recorded live in the studio in a handful of sessions and edited into their final shape straight after – as a deliberate attempt to create music in the moment without much post-production and overthinking. Lontano encapsulates the feeling of projecting yourself into distant places, the longing for something beautiful far away. Made at night, meant to be listened to at night.
“Telekaster floats clean, electronically altered guitar tones across vast cathedrals of sonic space, making music that is serene but climactic (…) While moods shift, the work coheres. Telekaster is keen for you to listen front-to-end. You’ll hear shades of Chuck Johnson’s silvery atmospherics in Tracing Back the Stream and bits that sound like Robert Poss of Band of Susans in a contemplative mood. The music hovers and looms, tones left to shimmer like a heat mirage in an aftermath of undertones. Post-rockers like Barn Owl and Jon Porras haunt the margins, and you might occasionally flash on other Germans, Ulrich Schnauss for instance, or the pristine, electronic geometries of Roedelius. Tracing Back The Stream is the first Telekaster LP in a very long time. It is a fearlessly and deliberately personal one. It is a guitarist’s album, who likes to move into other, freer spaces with his instrument. It is an ambient record that offers an angular perspective on the genre itself, both in sound design and composition, drawing influences from Post-Rock, Experimental and Kosmische Musik alike. Even though the tracks Purple and Sun have also been released as singles, the album was intended and sequenced to be listend to from start to finish. Sometimes life just takes you back to certain things you subconsciously missed and felt present in their very absence all along. Figure and Ground, Telekaster’s first release in a little more than a decade (and leading into a full new album later in 2023), is exactly about that moment. Two contemplative guitar compositions spiraling through time and diving into inner spheres by creating countless new layers on the outside.
