Back in February, Dark Horse announced an August release for the print edition of Jordi Lafebre's "Always Never" in English: https://www.darkhorse.com/Blog/3446/fall-back-love-always-never It's a book I had reviewed after its digital release in 2021: https://www.pipelinecomics.com/always-never-by-jordi-lafebre-review/ I really hope this gives the book a new life in North America. It's a great one. Also, it prompts a little wild speculation from me about Dark Horse and other projects of Lafebre's... My theory makes sense and fits the gaps in the narrative, but is it true? I hope so.... Julie Doucet won the Grand Prix at Angouleme this year. How did that happen? What kind of narrative did you shape in your mind for why the voters voted the way they did? My guess is, you're wrong. These things can't be forced into a single narrative, and I'll tell you exactly why and how Julie Doucet won in this podcast. You're welcome. Here, watch Chris Ware hand over the prize to Doucet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZx486r9FW4 Warning: It's awkward. Comics are a combination of words and art. You need both. You can flip through a book or look at its cover and get a good first impression. A lot of the times, however, that can be deceptive. You need to dig in and read the combination of art and words to get the art in its proper context to enjoy it. This works both ways -- some very cool art tells the story very poorly. It also can go for color schemes, as I talk about in this podcast. I mentioned my review of Penelope Bagieu's "Josephine" in this podcast. You can find it here: https://www.pipelinecomics.com/josephine1/ The autobiographical Instagram cartoonist whose name I blanked on during the podcast is Margaux Motion. You can find her here: https://www.instagram.com/margauxmotin/ Now excuse me. It's getting late and I have to boost my score in this week's DuoLingo challenge. It's Day 793 for me today! Today is my birthday, but I don't want your gifts. 🎉 Instead, I want you to buy a comic book for yourself. 🎁 https://www.pipelinecomics.com/buy-your-first-bd-today/ (I have some suggestions in an article on the website right now), but I'm going to talk about one very timely series in this podcast. "Ken Games" was one of my early favorite European series. And it's on sale right now for a mere $2.99 a book. It's an amazing value for that money. Go buy it for yourself now. Thank me later. https://amzn.to/3tq6FXV (Here's an Amazon link to it.) (Yes, it's an affiliate link.) https://www.izneo.com/en/european-comics/thriller/ken-games-12032 (Here's the Izneo link.) I'm sure several of you think the title of this podcast should be "Defunding Comixology," because you think it's what Amazon has done. I'm taking the opposite opinion on this one. Amazon is hurting Comixology in the short term for a long term benefit. They are providing focus, but the transition will be a rough one. We're already seeing things get better, in fact, and I'm betting things will move pretty fast from here. Learning French: I'm using https://www.duolingo.com/courses/fr (DuoLingo) for learning French. Belgium has a new passport that features Belgian comic characters like Largo Winch, Lucky Luke, Tintin, and the Smurfs. Want! I received a comment recently that made fun of the way I pronounced a Belgian creators' name. It made me think about pronunciations. For as hard as I try to get it right, I'm always fighting my natural American accent instincts... One quick correction to this episode: The hockey player's name I was thinking of was Mark Messier. The Beatles had a 12 month period in the mid-1960s where they released four studio albums. Is there a similar comics version of that kind of productivity? Ok, sure, probably Jack Kirby with or without Stan Lee. But keeping with the theme of this podcast, who comes to mind? Easy -- Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo in the mid-1960s when they released 3 books in the same calendar year, and 5 in the span of two years. In this podcast, I'll run down the list for you. I also mentioned and recommended https://www.youtube.com/user/pegzch (Rick Beato's YouTube channel) if you're looking for smart analysis of music on-line. There are parallels between the North American and Franco-Belgian publishing market. Take, for example, the way serialized stories are collected into larger volumes in addition to albums. This is the story of how Jean Dupuis took the unsold issues of Le Journal de Spirou and created a secondary market for them that helped grow the brand. It's a model that would be repeated by Spirou's competition. I did a whole article explaining https://www.pipelinecomics.com/the-surprising-way-they-collected-pilote-magazine-issues/ (how it worked for Pilote Journal), for example, complete with video. I hope to get a hole of a Spirou collection someday so I can do something similar with it. For now, this podcast will have to do. Hard to believe, but "X-Force" #1 came out 30 years ago this past week. I feel so old just saying that, but I'm trying not to think about it too much. Now, since this is Rob Liefeld we're talking about, there's a small bit of controversy in Twitter-land. For some reason, people want to rain on Liefeld's parade. One went so far as to cite one website's Top 10 list of Best Selling Single Comics of All Time that has, to put it mildly, some faulty logic at its very core. This podcast is me correcting that fault and pointing out its intellectual bankruptcy. I've written a lot of reviews in my time. For PipelineComics.com, alone, that number is up over 350. So when Google recently outlined their opinions of what makes a good product review, I listened. These are mostly meant for affiliate marketers who are just plain awful reviewers. Yet, it's fun to see how that applies to reviews of creative works such as comic. So here I am. There are three Smurfs theme parks in the world today, all built in recent years. We're taking a tour of them, from Russia to Dubai to Shanghai. As a bonus, whatever happened to the Smurfs park they announced in Spain that never got built? Raoul Cauvin: Over the weekend, Raoul Cauvin, veteran Belgian comics writer, announced that his cancer is bad enough that the doctor says https://www.spirou.com/cauvin/commentaires.php?ID=385&fbclid=IwAR3LGrlHUO2Wd0J29_PHh1Wzqv5XLVi7Fv2TcxsAv_iiAe86U-fyqnGmDXI (he doesn't have much longer to live). I said in the podcast that Cinebook only translated a couple of his "Cedric" books. I looked it up afterwards and realized that they do have seven books in their catalog from that series: https://www.cinebook.co.uk/cedric-c-142_148_233.html I've reviewed two of his Bluecoats books: "The David": https://www.pipelinecomics.com/the-bluecoats-v12-the-david/ "The Blues in Black and White: https://www.pipelinecomics.com/the-bluecoats-v10-the-blues-in-black-and-white-starring-mathew-brady/ Jordi Lafebre: In happier news, EuropeComics announced on Monday morning that Jordi Lafebre's recent album is in the works and "Coming Soon." This is super exciting news. Here is the announcement: https://twitter.com/EuropeComics/status/1391712729434558466 I mention in the podcast that Jordi Lafebre is Spanish and then immediately refer to him as a French artist in the next breath. I should have phrased that as "French-published artist," which would make slightly more sense. Follow him on Instagram at Jordi_Lafebre: https://Instagram.com/jordi_lafebre Also, I refer to "Glorious Summers" in this podcast more than once as "Beautiful Summers." My mistake. Disney+ has a new documentary series called "Marvel 616." It's a cute piece of Marvel brand building, and caused a bit of a stir over the episode titled "Marvel Method." Marvel characters are the stars of the new season of Fortnite, a video game claiming 350 million players. Fortnite characters are making appearances on Marvel comic book covers, as well as a storyline in Thor. I think Marvel needs to be hyper aggressive with this. It's the marketing opportunity of a lifetime. And they're choosing to lead with -- variant covers?!? This could be the biggest mistake the company's ever made. And I remember Daredevil's armor.... Sean Phillips and Ed Brubaker have a new project that will be released as a series of standalone graphic novels. The format and intent of the "Reckless" series reminds me a bit of the European album tradition, even if the physical format isn't quite so large. Other professionals are considering OGNs now, too. The only growth in comics is in the book market for younger readers, which is filled with stand-alone books. We're moving closer to the European model, folks.... Marvel has licensed out any comics not meant for readers over the age of, say, 21 to IDW and Scholastic now. Is this just a good business move to cater to your core competency and let others spread your brand message? Does this tell us that Disney sees Marvel as solely a Direct Market company that it's unwilling to expand to attack new markets with? Has Marvel Comics officially given up on the kids and is letting Disney parse that out now? Two Must Read notes before listening to this podcast: First, it was recorded on Saturday morning while news and rumors were still in the midst of breaking and I hadn't even read much of them yet. I almost didn't publish this because parts of it felt incomplete in the light of new thoughts. But the second half is so "timeless," that it didn't seem right to bury it. Second: DC does not own the two new distributors that are launching to carry their books. But when two smaller companies rely on one client for 99% of their business, that client controls the game. DC might as well own them. I know I promised a link in the show notes somewhere during this episode. And as soon as I find it, I'll include it in here. The three volume "Exo" series has, to my storytelling mind, some fundamental shortcomings that turn what might be a good story into something of a confusing mess. It all makes sense in the end, but getting there was more confusing that exciting. And then there's the bad drug trips, which are just as bad a bit of plot mechanics as dream sequences. This time around, I'm taking a look at the first volume of a two-parter called "The Detection Club." It's a story based on a real life social club that started in the 1930s for detective writers in Great Britain. They're a fascinating cast of characters, with quick wits and dialogue that drips with sarcasm, put downs, and one-liners. It's all very... British. And I LOVE it. Corrections: * The second volume of "The Detection Club" is only 51 pages long, not 100. And this first volume is 88 pages, not 100. So this series really is more a three volume set collected in two volumes, for whatever reason... See? I can still do math good. * I may have slightly mispronounced "Peter Ustinov" to sound more like "Houstonov." That was a slip of the tongue from talking too fast. Management, as always, regrets the error. Before you listen to this podcast, read Brian Hibbs' article on Comics Beat: https://www.comicsbeat.com/how-comics-retailing-moves-forward/ (https://www.comicsbeat.com/how-comics-retailing-moves-forward/) The retailers document that I'm quoting so liberally from now requires permission to read. What if it all goes wrong? What if not enough stores survive? And Diamond fails? And publishers fold? This is the doom and gloom scenario thought exercise. With a bonus tangent: What is government's role in the arts? Trust me, it's not as political as that sounds, but I'm thinking about this in a different way than I think most people do. It's worth bringing up, especially in light of a scenario which sees the comics market implode. Except for Kickstarters, really, for as long as there are fans willing to back those.... Yes, I've started a more focused effort at learning French this year. It's not my first time. I took two years of French in high school. Remarkably, 25 years later, a lot of that stuff is still stuck in memory. I'm rediscovering stuff I had long forgotten and holding onto it pretty well. The trick is using the DuoLingo app and website. In this edition of the Pipeline Comics podcast, I'll tell you about the app, how I'm using it, and what results I've seen already. If you want to learn a foreign language, whether it be French or something else, I'd gladly recommend DuoLingo. (No, this is not an ad. In fact, I don't think DuoLingo even has an affiliate program...) Stick around to the end for a minor announcement about the scheduling of this podcast for the near (and likely far) future... And I think I promised a link for something during the show, and then forgot to write it down. Email me if you need it. I'll update these show notes. I'm a bit magazine happy these days. I've discovered the fun of looking at old French and Belgian magazines to see where all these great comics like Spirou, Asterix, and Lucky Luke came from. Angouleme is right around the corner, and we now know the three names who are the finalists for this year's Grand Prix award. In this week's podcast, I'll be discussing them. Since recording this episode a few days ago, I've learned more about the two French nominees, and now I'm definitely rooting for Catherine Meurisse. http://www.tcj.com/catherine-meurisse-the-face-of-french-comics-is-female/ (The Comics Journal write-up on her) is amazing, and I want to read a couple of her books right away now. What I forgot about is that Guibert and Ware were the two runners-up last year. There's every possible chance they may repeat that this year. Ouch. I reviewed more than 50 albums this year, but read many more. And now it's time to boil that down to the list of the 10 albums I liked the most. It's an insane list I'll throw in the 11th that just missed, too, because it's the one book I had to talk myself out of putting in to make a Top 11 list. Decisions must be made, after all. Coming at you from the Pipeline World HQ Basement once again (thus, the sound quality), it's the Pipeline Comics podcast! I'm not a resolutions guy. I believe if you want to do something, you should do it. It doesn't matter what day of the year it is. And the plan can be longer or shorter than a year. Resolutions are too easy to ignore and not do when they're this arbitrary, for most people. But I love listening to the year end podcasts where people review their resolutions and predictions from the beginning of the year to see how much has come true. I am a study in contrasts, so I'm resolving to do some stuff for Pipeline Comics this year. And I'm creating this podcast to keep me accountable at the end of the year. I also reserve the right to throw all these resolutions out if I have a better idea at any time. So there! For the past few years, it has been a tradition in my family: I get the latest Fantagraphics slipcase edition of the Don Rosa Library. Each year, they've put out two hardcover books, and each year they follow that up with a slipcover edition of those two books. Sitting on my shelf right now, I can see volumes 1 - 8 in four slipcases, and the recently added "The Complete Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" slipcase next to it? What happened with volumes 9 and 10? And why is that forcing me to make an awkward decision? That's what today's podcast is all about. What kind of comics collector/reader am I?!? "La Grande Odalisque" is an imperfect painting. Borne of a school of technical art that strongly believed in perfect anatomical representation, its painter, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres chose instead to emphasize beauty over perfection. He screwed up the anatomy to make a painting that he thought was better. This got me to thinking about how comic art is filled with purposeful imperfection, how well that might work, and why it's not such a bad thing. In other words, are J. Scott Campbell's women "bad art" or just a series of conscious choices to create a specific look that amounts to his style? Is "perfect anatomy" the be all and end all of art? Should comic book artists not be judged so harshly on whether they get it "right"? https://www.pipelinecomics.com/the-grande-odalisque-v1/ (My review of "The Grande Odalisque" v1) https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/ap-art-history/later-europe-and-americas/enlightenment-revolution/a/ingres-la-grand-odalisque (Khan Academy lessons) on the painting https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1079534/ (A real human in the same pose) for anatomical reference. https://www.louvre.fr/en/oeuvre-notices/une-odalisque (The Louvre's page) dedicated to the painting. Where do new comic readers come from? From listening to interviews with comics creators, reading comments from comic readers, and seeing trends, I can point to three moments that brought new comic readers into the world. In order, they are: The GI Joe TV commercial The Saturday morning X-Men animated series The Borders-era Manga boom

I'll talk about all of those and bring you some fun nostalgic audio along the way.

The easiest French comics to read would be the silent ones -- there's nothing to translate! As it happens, Lewis Trondheim wrote four of them that did get translated (!) about 15 years ago, and that's what this show is about: Li'l Santa, Mr. O, and Mr. I. Still dreaming.... I would like nothing more than to organize my entire comic book collection into alphabetical order. I crave that organization. But I also wouldn't want it. There are plenty of cases where sorting things in strict A-Z order would be more annoying than anything else. And what about the books-with-spines? I'll never have enough bookshelves for that. What, you thought I’d be giving Asterix a rest after Asterix Week a couple weeks ago? So did I. Then the big news hit, and we need to have a chat about it. Papercutz picked up the license for Asterix and will start reprinting the entire series in the spring of 2020. They'll make omnibus books while also printing the new individual albums as they go, starting with "Asterix and the Chieftain's Shield." But they're shrinking the book size and re-translating the scripts. Should we be worried? Yes, of course we should. But don't give up hope yet! I'll also talk about what this means for lettering, what the digital comics situation is, what extra material they might need, and whether Papercutz might want to adjust some coloring, too. This podcast is based on my article, "https://www.pipelinecomics.com/papercutz-brings-asterix-to-america-finally/ (Papercutz Brings Asterix to America. Finally. Should I Worry?)" When things get too big and space gets too small and it's tough to get rid of things, then what? I have too many comics. They're spread out across too many locations. The only way to fix this problem is to shrink the collection. I've tried that in the past, but it doesn't get easier. In the world of original art, the biggest money goes to covers. Splash covers follow. But the "lowly" old panel page is, to me, the best and most valuable kind of original art page of them all. In other news, Papercutz announced that they'll be publishing Asterix here in the States starting in the spring. Yes, I have thoughts. Yes, I will make a podcast about that, but it won't be until next Friday, the 15th. Stay tuned! Keep an eye on PipelineComics.com in the meantime for an article filled with my questions and worries on this movie. J. Scott Campbell has a particular style that drives some people crazy. And I mean that in both possible ways you might think. This podcast starts off with a defense of Campbell's style and what "style" even means. Then, we get into the structure of the Direct Market comics world and why Campbell's career has mutated into what it is today. Finally, I get to recommending the works of three artists that I think you'll enjoy, if you're a Campbell fan. They are Alessandro Barbucci, Mathieu Reynes, and Jose Luis Munuera. Correction Department: In "The Campbells," there are only 2 kids, not 3. Can't believe I messed that one up.... In the world of Asterix, the Druid Getafix, provider of wit, wisdom, magic potion, and Gandalf impersonations has a chariot factor of 1. If he got hit by a chariot tomorrow, the whole village would be doomed. I think Chief Vitalstatistix is to blame for this sorry state of affairs.

A radical thought: The Village would be better off if it surrendered to Rome like just about every other Gallic village did before them, some the hard way. It would save Asterix and friends a whole lot of grief and allow them to evolve and grow. It was a rainy Sunday afternoon, and I was in the Times Square area of Manhattan. I had a half hour to myself, so I did what I'm supposed to do in a situation like that: I went to the comic shop. On today's podcast, I talk about my trip to the store and what I found there. Sometimes, it's fun just to get lost. If you have no game plan, you never know what surprises might pop up. I kept an eye out for European comics, naturally, and got the chance to see what Magnetic Press and IDW, in particular, are up to these days. There are some very nice print books out there today. If you've never read a Spirou comic before, I have a suggestion for where to start. And it's not a book from 60 years ago. It's not even a book from the Andre Franquin glory years, nor the long run from Tome and Janry in the 80s and 90s. "Spirou in Berlin" is a one-off book set at the end of the Cold War. And despite that little bit of political connection to a specific time frame, Flix's story and art make a timeless and isolated tale that can be enjoyed on its own while introducing you to all the main characters of the series: Spirou, Fantasio, and the Count, first and foremost. It's asking an awful lot of you to say, "Pick a book and go." There are literally thousands of books out there. Not all are great. Not all are going to be to your liking. But I have read a lot of them, and I find certain books I’ve recommended to people in the past that they’ve enjoyed. Today, I have five series I’d like to recommend to you. They may not ALL be to your liking, but so long as at least one sparks your interest, I’ve done my job. The New York Comic Con is over for 2019, and I'm here to pick up the pieces. The revived Harvey Awards had a Best European Book. DC continues to expand its Black Label line and looks more and more like a European publisher every day. Magnetic Press re-organizes and I think it's a great thing, though I'm not completely sure why. In sad news, Spirou writer/artist Tome passed away over the weekend, too. This is a topic that should go without saying, really. But as we all race to what's new this week and discussions of a comic will last for barely five days after their release, it's easy to forget about that ever-growing pile of comics behind you. Take a look around. Take a second look. Pick up a book. Give it another life. Question of the Week: After Macro-Economics, name another college course you took that would make for the blandest possible comic. It's nothing personal, it's just business. I'm amazed at how often people take it personally when you point out the flaws in the comic book industry. There are plenty of those flaws, and they exist at every conceivable level of comics, from the readers to the retailers, on through to the distributors, the publishers, and even the creators. It's a miracle this industry is still standing. Truly a miracle. Today's podcast is about, ultimately, the one fundamental characteristic of the Direct Market that led to its creation and led to it being an economically viable business model, but that doesn't square up to the realities of today. In this podcast, I'll explain what that is, why it's broken, and how it might spell the end of all comics kind. Ok, maybe not that last part, but it could prove deadly to a once thriving industry. We'll see.

Augie De Blieck Jr. begins the new era of the Pipeline Comics Podcast (10 years later) with an explanation of how he got introduced to European comics, why he loves them, and why he wants the rest of North America to read them, too. What started as a novelty in San Diego 15 years ago is now big enough to carry an entire hobby on its own. Seriously, you should try this stuff. They're great comics. There are ten common reasons I’ve heard for why you don’t read European Comics. You can't read French. The books are too big or too expensive. You just don't know what's good.  I have answers to all of those objections. When I'm done, you'll realize that your objections are more more like excuses. You'll be jumping to read something new afterwards!
