This week on the Weekly Buzz discussion, we delve into the recent surge of unexpected leaks. We finally have some details about the Air 3, and there's even a peculiar rumor circulating about a Mini 4.
Let's begin by addressing the abundance of leaks that have emerged. The Air 3, initially believed to be in development without much certainty about its release, has suddenly become imminent, and we can hardly contain our excitement.
If you take a look at our Air 3 guide, located at the top and/or bottom of our articles, you'll notice that the majority of the posts are quite recent.
From the beginning, what will the Air 3 have? Most of these leaks originate from Igor Bogdanov, with the most recent and significant leak coming from the WinFuture website. Initially, Bogdanov mentioned that the Air 3 might arrive as early as late June or early July. However, since we haven't received any news about a DJI event, it's highly unlikely that it will happen during this timeframe.
As of then, the only Air 3 details we've heard involve the inclusion of a dual camera. However, that single rumor wasn't enough to establish it as truth. Nevertheless, as more leaked photos surfaced, it became increasingly evident that there was something distinct about the camera gimbal, despite the low resolution of the images.
Pricing was also leaked early on, but it originated from Europe, making it challenging to determine the expected price in the US. However, it appears that it will likely fall just below that of the Mavic 3 Classic.
This is also where we found out about the DJI RC 2 and RC-N2. A shocking upgrade to controllers that either just came out or didn't seem like they needed any changes, however, we won't say no to them.
Last week, the biggest leak of all came from WinFuture, which obtained product photos of the Air 3. This leak confirmed that the Air 3 will indeed feature dual cameras, although we couldn't verify any specifications other than the apertures: F1.7 for the bottom camera and F2.8 for the top camera.
So who is the Air 3 for? Yifei and I agree that the Air 3 won't be suitable for beginners just starting to fly drones. However, it would be an excellent option for beginners looking to venture into professional drone work.
While the Mini 3 Pro is capable of capturing impressive shots and can be used in certain professional scenarios, it isn't particularly well-suited for full-time drone photography and videography. The Mavic 3 Pro, on the other hand, serves as the flagship drone for such work. However, its starting price of $2,199 can be daunting for beginners, which is why the Air lineup exists.
Mini 4 Pro? What? Regarding the Mini 4 rumor, I'm at a loss for words. We weren't expecting something like this to surface anytime soon. DJI typically waits at least a year and a half before releasing an "s" variant of a drone and two to three years before advancing to the next generation.
Both Yifei and I suspect that this won't be a "Mini 4" but rather a "Mini 3S," as the design appears to be identical to the Mini 3 Pro. Apart from that, there isn't much else to discuss regarding this leak. Naturally, we'll have to wait and see if further leaks shed more light on the nature of this drone.

I'm trying something new. Each week I'm going to recap my favorite stories from the past week as well as our discussion during the weekly live stream. I'll fill in some of my opinions on the topics, throw an interview in here or there, and see where it goes from here. Hope you enjoy it.
New York City opening up to drone use Since the product came on the scene, New York City has had a de facto ban on drones. The city law bans take-offs of aircraft that don't use approved locations by the Department of Transportation or the Port Authority. That definition pretty much means only heliports or airports, which are impractical for any film crew or recreational pilot to use.
However, thanks to several factors, including a lawsuit by a film production company and the need to use drones for building facade surveys, New York is "opening up" the ability for drone operators to receive flight permits. However, the permits won't be the easiest to get. No casual pilots will be getting the NYPD's stamp of approval. Here's what you'll need in the application:
Oh yeah, and this must be submitted 30 days before the "take-off." A hearing for the change in city law is scheduled for July 7. I guess we'll know more then. But is New York in the right for these sort of restrictions?
Well, yes and no in my opinoin. Are these laws constitutional? No idea. New York's law is very well worded. It does not ban the flight of aircraft in its city. It just prohibits you from taking off or landing them. The law would have to be directly challenged in court with a final ruling for the precedent to be set on how other cities can regulate drones.
Also, like do I need to get approval for every take-off or just once for the whole project? Cause if I'm filming a multi-day event, that's a lot of battery changes and is so unpredictable when you'll have to land and take-off again.
How much regulation is too much? Here is where my mind is split on drone regulation. Can you blame NYC for wanting to keep drone flights to as few as possible? You can argue your right to fly or right to capture events with your cameras, but you have to look at it from both sides. There are some idiot drone pilots out there.
In a city of almost 9 million, maybe having strict drone laws is a good thing? Now who that comes from, I think, is easy to answer, the FAA. Constitutionally the FAA has the authority to regulate airspace, no one else.
I've said this often on our YouTube streams, and I'll say it again. In the right hands, drones can create beautiful things or save lives. But drones in the wrong hands can be very, very dangerous.
For us normie pilots out here that just want more places to fly, trust me, I'm with you, my city also has a similar ban to New York's, and the best bet is to continue to be good pilots. We should continue to follow the laws, be active in our community, and hopefully be good stewards that open local officials up to friendlier regulations.
Or we all run for office, take over the FAA from the inside, and create a new drone world order. I'm joking, I'm joking... ish.
Will Chinese bans force US innovation? Let's talk about the hottest form of regulation going on in the US at the moment. There are several of these flying around, with plenty already in effect. Florida banned Chinese-made drones for its agencies earlier this year, and of course, there's the DoD's Blue UAS list.
There are more coming. The Senate is working on a bill that will ban the FAA from using federal funds to purchase drones from a list of countries, including China. Then, of course, there is the sentiment around anything Chinese being bad and must be banned, like TikTok.
If we want to see the future of bans on Chinese drones, we will have to see if TikTok's regulatory issues succeed. Both have very similar qualities to them. Both arguments lack concrete evidence and rely on the Chinese fear of the people and "national security concerns." Finally, they are both set up for some sort of legal challenge. TikTok's bans are way more mainstream, and I suspect those will be challenged long before any Chinese drone law is.
We'll have to wait and see what would come of any potential TikTok ban challenge, but if the ban sticks, then I can see the drone bans continuing. If TikTok's ban can be challenged and overturned, then I don't see why these Chinese bans couldn't be challenged either.
But this could take a while, maybe years, and business has to continue. Many agencies forced to move to US-made drones have complained of limitations compared to those from China, like DJI.
Can the US market take advantage of the bans? It's time for the US drone sector to step up. The federal and some state governments have literally handed them dominance in the US market on a silver platter. Sadly, when governments spoon-feed success to companies, it usually doesn't go over well. Is there another option?
Well, I have a hunch that instead of US companies stepping up and becoming powerhouses, the existing leaders might make the hop over the pond and set up shop here.
DJI is out of the question. Like Bytedance (TikTok's parent company), DJI's roots are in China and have too many ties there. Autel, on the other hand, could. Autel already has a US foothold through its automotive wing and wants to compete with DJI in the enterprise market. What better way to get ahead of DJI than doing what they cannot and embracing the US market and move?
Now I make it sound effortless, but I remember asking Autel CEO Maxwell Lee about it at CES this year, and he didn't shoot it down right away. It didn't sound like it was something he wanted to do, but he acknowledged it was possible.
Anyways, the regulation space is not a fast-paced one, so I'm sure we will have a chance to retouch this topic again.

This week's livestream from Yifei and Seth covered the top stories from last week and a new segment, DroneDJ Video of the Week. Read a summary of the topics we discussed below.
French citizen arrested for drone flights near Iran border Last week an Iranian court sentenced Benjamin Brière to eight years in prison after flying his drone near the Turkmenistan-Iran border. Brière was arrested in May of 2020 and has been on a hunger strike since Christmas to protest his mistreatment.
France believes this is a political move due to ongoing negotiations on a new Iran Nuclear Deal. In response, Iran has labeled France as a "hostile nation." There are also concerns coming from Brière's Iranian-based lawyers about how the trial went.
This is a very messy situation, especially since Brière is both a foreigner and an Iranian citizen as he holds dual citizenship status.
Litchi announced addition to DJI Mini 2, Mini SE, and Air 2S Litchi, a popular autonomous drone flying app, added support to DJI's Mini 2, Mini SE, and Air 2S. This is due to the support being added for these drones into DJI's SDK (a tool used by developers for third-party apps). Here is what you can now do with these drones:
Currently, the update is only on Android, but Litchi hopes to bring these additions to its iOS app once those SDK versions are updated.
DroneDJ Video of the Week This week's Video of the Week comes from Waimea Bay in Hawaii. With winter swells starting to come in, the surfers are out and enjoying the giant waves. Drone pilots are also out to capture the waves and those that ride them.

DJI Inspire 2 to be discountined Notorious DJI leaker OsitaLV shared an image of what seemed to be a notice to stores that the Inspire 2 will stop production. This lines up with reports about a possible Inspire 3 coming later this year.
What will come from an Inspire 3? We don't know, but we have stated our request in previous articles and of course, let us know below what you want to see. If you are still an Inspire 2 flyer and don't expect upgrading to the 3 or whatever comes next, make sure to stock up on accessories as those are usually the first bits to go out of stock.

Yifei and Seth discuss this week's top stories, recap what CES was like this year, and interview Autel's owner Maxwell Lee.
CES 2022 recap and interview with Maxwell Lee While it fell short of meeting expectations from years prior, CES still had great finds and opportunities to speak with companies trying to innovate in the drone industry. There was a good spread of tech to check out from tethered systems to support events and disaster areas to Autel and Sony.
We spent a good amount of time with XDynamics and Autel, speaking with both about the new products they were announcing. You can find our full interview with Autel's Maxwell Lee here. It was great to meet and talk shop with him. Lee understands the industry well and wants to keep pushing what drones can do commercially and in the enterprise space.
XDynamics is a lesser-known company but showed off a great product. Its Evolve 2 reminded me of what a Phantom 5 should be. It's a beast with a micro 4/3 sensor with interchangeable lenses on the front shooting up to 4k at 120 fps or Apple ProRes. Another product that also gets me excited is XDynamics' handheld gimbal with a similar camera system. It's not out for sale yet, but the company hopes to launch the gimbal later this year.
Check your drone's memory card! Just for laughs, we discussed the memory card found by the Israeli military that ended up showing who the pilot was. It's a good reminder to double-check those SD cards before you head out for a shoot. No one wants to be out in the middle of a flight when you run out of memory space all of a sudden.
A drone for the air and water A new kind of drone is coming to the market, one that can fly in the air and swim underwater. The "Sea-Air Integrated Drone" is meant for underwater expeditions rather than fun flying like other drones.
Really it's two drones in one, a hexacopter that features a claw-like mechanism under its belly and foam flotation devices. Once over the water, it can "land" and deploy the sea-faring drone controlled via a tether. Once shooting is complete, the hexacopter grabs the sea drone and takes back off. Pretty clever idea when you think about it. No more need for boats to drive out to inspection locations.

While at CES 2022, DroneDJ's Seth Kurkowski had the opportunity to speak with the owner of Autel Robotics, Maxwell Lee.
At Autel's booth, the two spoke about the company's latest products, the Autel EVO Nano and Lite series, as well as the company's more high-end offerings.
Autel EVO Nano and Lite The EVO Nano, Nano+, Lite, and Lite+ join the company's EVO II series of drones as the company's lower-cost consumer drones.
While these drones may be smaller and cheaper, Lee doesn't want consumers to underestimate the power of the drones.
With impressive battery life and high-quality cameras, the Lite and Nano drones become easy-to-transport content creation machines.
Autel EVO II As the EVO II gets older, and the Lite+ comes in with impressive video creation features, it may be easy to think that the EVO II is losing its top spot, but it hasn't. The additional sensors and more tailored app continue to position the EVO II as the company's drone for more professional video production and uses.
Dragonfish While the Dragonfish vehicle may be prohibitively expensive for most of us, it isn't tailored or meant for the average person. The extremely long battery life and extensive camera options make the Dragonfish perfect for enterprise or law-enforcement purposes. Whether that's border patrol or watching for pirates, Lee made it clear that this drone is exclusively for non-weaponized purposes.

On this edition of our podcast, we have a great conversation with Andy Shen of Shen Drones. Andy is kind of the Godfather of the ducted CineWhoop. Tune in — and subscribe — as we hear how Andy went from being a photographer... to a drone designer.
Andy Shen: Great drones, great conversation Andy tells a great story about the satisfaction – and challenges – of designing and selling FPV drones. We're particularly interested in how Andy developed a very specific ducted design, now used on many copycat drones. But there's only one Squirt. Andy is the fifth guest on our relatively new podcast, called The Buzz. We've been fortunate to have a number of high-level movers and shakers from the drone industry on the show, and encourage you to explore the links below. Okay, we realize that probably only a thin wedge of our demographic will recognize that we've borrowed from the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. We didn't outright steal the song title because, well, Though Shalt Not do that. But we wanted to get you up to speed on The Buzz, the fastest-growing podcast in the drone industry.
When we started The Buzz, we had a simple idea: We wanted to keep our pulse on what's happening in the drone world. We aimed high for some guests – CEO's of major companies in the business – but we also wanted to explore really great stories from operators, builders, and more. We always make sure that each and every episode is interesting, fresh – and hopefully intelligent. The result? Our numbers are doing great right out of the gate.
And of course, we'd like to grow them to new heights.
The Buzz so far We thought this might be a great opportunity to review our guest list to date, make it easy for you to sample an episode or two, and subscribe to the series.
Our first guest? Tom Comet. He's the owner of Drone Boy, one of the best-known drone cinematography outfits in Canada. We spoke about the trends in his sector – including the role of tiny CineWhoops and also massive FPV rigs flying RED cameras. You'll be interested to learn that Tom got so into learning about drones, airspace regulations, and the mechanics of flight that he now pilots his own manned aircraft.
Tom is a great talker, with a great story. You can hear, here:
Tom Comet in conversation with DroneDJ's Scott Simmie The drone lawyer You likely know who we're talking about: Brendan Schulman. He's a very recognizable figure with DJI, which isn't surprising: He's the company's Vice-President of Policy and Legal affairs. Brendan is great at getting to the point – and we had a sweeping conversation that also touched on what DJI views as trade protectionism in the US. Definitely a must-listen episode:
DJI's Brendan Schulman Skydio's CEO Skydio is on a roll. It's Skydio 2 and now the Skydio X2 series have attracted a lot of attention. So is AI going to keep growing as a force in the drone industry? What's next for Skydio after its Series C fundraise of $100M US? There's one way to find out: Listen to this episode of The Buzz, featuring CEO Adam Bry.
Adam Bry in conversation with DroneDJ's Editor-in-Chief Open talk about open source Our most recent episode delved into the world of Open Source software as it applies to drones. And there's no entity more emblematic of this are than Auterion and Auterion GS (the GS stands for Government Services). I had a great conversation with CEO Dave Sharpin about Auterion's past, its present...and its future. Have a listen!
An in-depth discussion about Open Source drone software...and why it matters Don't miss an episode! The Buzz comes out regularly. But if you don't subscribe, odds are you might miss it. Hey! Welcome to the launch of our new DroneDJ podcast.
It's called The Buzz, which is a nod to the sound our machines make. But beyond that, we'll be discussing topics and issues that are raising a "buzz" in the industry.
Whether it's the latest trends in Cine Whoop drones, the best cameras for onboard capture and recording, or controversies like Remote ID or "Made in the USA" drones, we'll take the time to dive deep on The Buzz.
On this inaugural episode, we speak with Tom Comet of Drone Boy. Tom was an early adopter in the drone cinematography world and has built his company into a North American leader when it comes to stellar drone work. Check out their demo reel:
https://vimeo.com/106238497 Those boys can fly... Scott Simmie caught up with Tom and covered everything from the latest trends in flying high-end cameras on FPV rigs to how to become a better aerial cinematographer.
If you like the sounds of this, please subscribe here to ensure you catch every episode of The Buzz!
You can listen to it below, but also via your favourite podcast provider.
