COVID has been one of the biggest challenges to face education and assessment in years.
In this podcast, Simon Trevers, Chief Strategy Officer for the Surpass team at BTL, discusses the ongoing challenges faced by COVID and how there is now an opportunity for awarding organisations to make a positive step towards technology.
Simon discusses formative and continuous summative assessment in detail and how, by undertaking a step-by-step transition to technology-based assessments, these forms of assessment can enhance the examination process. Doing so would mitigate the risk associated with 100% terminal assessment programmes and improve the value of the assessment experience for students, teachers, and education leaders.

Simon has worked in the educational and assessment technology industry for over 14 years and has a wealth of experience in designing and delivering a diverse range of interactive learning platforms, learning management systems and online assessment services for customers across the UK and overseas. Simon’s skills and experience encompass product management, product development, commercial management and solutions architecture.
Simon’s role as Chief Strategy Officer at BTL involves working alongside clients and industry partners to understand business needs and operational challenges, and to identify future trends in assessment.
Prior to working in educational and assessment technology, Simon was involved in healthcare communications technology for almost 10 years, delivering services to hospitals globally.
Having graduated from The University of Reading with a degree in Geography, Simon’s more recent professional qualifications include an ITIL Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management and he is also a Certified Scrum Product Owner.

Sean discusses the organisation’s approach to introducing digital testing to complement their paper test offering and increase candidate reach.
We get an insight into the process of digitising test content, and getting key stakeholders on board with change. Sean gives an honest overview of some of the challenges and reluctance to change from paper to digital testing, including problems with infrastructure in learning institutions.
Sean then reflects on the forced change that came about as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, as learning moved online and demand for digital testing increased, bringing with it greater understanding and trust for online assessments. We hear how telc put processes in place to ensure testing could continue, including how the organisation had to re-think the way they conduct oral examinations.

Going digital has become the norm for many parts of our lives recently. Since March we have been talking about remote item authoring and remote test delivery, but what happens after you have passed the assessment? Job interviews are increasingly being conducted remotely, so how do you share and verify credentials? In this podcast, Tim Burnett talks to Danny King and Simon Trevers about how digital credentialing is growing in the USA and Europe.
Danny provides an explanation of the technology and its take-up so far, and explains how learners and employers store, share and verify digital credentials. In this podcast, Ben Brady speaks to Kathryn Myers from the BTL Group Ltd. Legal department, exploring legal perspectives on remote proctoring (remote invigilation), particularly around privacy issues and best practice as an increasing number of organisations adopt this delivery method.

When news of potential lock-down started, the Surpass Product Communications and Training team immediately started investigating how they could deliver a comparable training experience for users of Surpass: one that offered the same level of interaction and dedication usually present in their face-to-face sessions. Janet King from NCFE CACHE talks about their PregancyVue product, which uses virtual reality to help learners understand child development from conception to birth. Janet discusses how this innovative use of technology has increased engagement with a subject that is increasingly difficult to teach and created a more interactive teaching programme. Janet also highlights the importance of introducing technology in a way that everyone can connect with, support by more traditional methods of learning, to give young learners the opportunities they deserve.

Paul Eeles discusses innovation in the vocational space, and how the pace of change is being felt much more quickly, suggesting that the further down an organisation innovation can be pushed, the better we are at it. Paul presents a case study of the MOT assessors’ qualification, which after being moved on-screen to meet the needs of the regulator, faced challenges due to assumptions that had been made about the technical capabilities of learners. Paul highlights the disparity between qualification such as this, and the choices given to young learners who are often given no choice but to hand-write despite it not being their usual way of working.
