First United Methodist Church

Sermon podcast from First United Methodist Church - Austin, Texas. First United Methodist Church of Austin (FUMC) is an inclusive faith community of Christian believers in the heart of downtown Austin. We balance traditional worship services with progressive theology. More than a neighborhood church, we are a church for all of Austin. Our members gather from across Central Texas and share a commitment to engaging conversations, community service, a growing faith, social justice, and Jesus’ commandment to love our neighbor.

On Ash Wednesday, we begin Lent, the 46-day journey to Easter. The beginning of Lent brings a new invitation—an invitation into a deeper life of faith, an invitation to renewed spirituality, and an invitation into deeper awareness of God and self. It is a time to give up things as well as take on new life-giving practices, helping us rid ourselves of distractions and desires that pull us away from God.

This year’s Ash Wednesday service is formulated for at-home participation at a time that works best for you. You can use the liturgy on your own or be guided by our video, featuring pastors and leaders in their own homes.

How to Recognize God Worship Series What does God do? How does God work? Is it when I get the favorable parking space (which, of course, is not the closest, but the most shaded)? Is it when I ace the test or get the promotion? Or is it something more, something better? We look to the Gospels for clues about where we can find God’s movement in our lives and the world.

Our Money Story Worship Series This fall, we are taking a fresh look at our money stories and asking where might God be speaking a new narrative into the limited ones we have told ourselves. We are inviting you to open up your own money story and consider it in the light of God’s story—a story that liberates us and invites us to be transformed for lives of joyful generosity and justice. This theme is personal—it’s about you as a disciple—but it’s also about us as a church. Read more at fumcaustin.org/ourmoneystory.

Unmute Thyself: Talking Politics in Church It's taboo to talk about politics in church, but we are called to connect our faith with the political challenges of our time. This fall, as our nation grapples with political issues during this election season, FUMC is pressing "unmute" to open the conversation about faith and politics. Through our sermon series, workshops and seminars, and invitations to participate in the political process, we invite you to join us as we consider how God calls us to respond in this highly politicized season.

The Parables Worship Series You know the feeling…that feeling that happens as you listen to or read a story, and the realization washes over you: this is really about me! This is just the feeling that Jesus was going for when he shared parable after parable with his disciples. Parables are short stories that shine a light on our lives and help us to see the world a bit differently. They spur us toward change. They reveal who God is. They give us a vision for the world God dreams of. This summer, we invite you not just to read the parables, but to be read by them. Beginning June 7, we will spend Sundays decoding the stories and uncovering how Jesus uses them to transform us.
