Yep, we said it - the legal system is not fair or your friend! In this episode, Grown Girl Divorce podcast host, Kimberly A. Cook, Esq. confronts the hard truths that the legal system is not built to be fair and it's definitely not your friend. If you're considering divorce, or going through one, it's important to understand how the court system actually works, and not how you wish it would.

Kimberly breaks down why fairness isn’t a legal standard, how relying on the court for validation is unrealistic, and what it really means to be strategic in a system that wasn’t designed with you in mind. Kimberly also gives you reminders on how to stay prepared and grounded despite the legal system not being fair or your friend!

This episode isn’t about fear but about freedom. The kind that comes from clarity, composure, and knowing how to move through a system without letting it break you.

Listen in and learn:

  • Why the court focuses on facts, not feelings
  • How to avoid the trap of “fighting for fairness”
  • What to prioritize in your legal strategy, and
  • How to protect your peace with a key mantra

Whether you're early in your divorce process or deep in the trenches, this episode will help you reset your expectations and reclaim your power in the process that is not fair or your friend.

When stress is high and emotions run deep, communication can easily become a source of conflict instead of a path to resolution. In this episode, Grown Girl Divorce podcast host, Kimberly A. Cook, Esq., breaks down six common communication mistakes that can derail your progress.

Kimberly discusses the following six mistakes:

  1. Letting Emotions Drive Decisions – Learn why reacting instead of responding can cost you time, money, and peace of mind.
  2. Using Children as Messengers – Understand how this tactic can harm your kids and backfire legally and emotionally.
  3. Engaging in Text Wars – Discover how ongoing digital disputes can become evidence, drain your energy, and distract from your goals.
  4. Social Media Oversharing – Hear why posting your pain or calling out your ex online can do more harm than good, especially in court.
  5. Failing to Actively Listen – Get tips for hearing what’s really being said (even when it’s hard) and how that can shift the case dynamic.
  6. Neglecting to Follow Professional Guidance – Explore how disregarding the advice of your lawyer, therapist, or mediator can sabotage your progress.

Whether you’re just beginning your divorce or deep in the process, this episode will help you stay grounded, communicate more effectively, and avoid unnecessary setbacks.

No one ever wants to be on the receiving end of a notification from the Department of Family and Child Services (DCFS) (also known as Child Protective Services in some areas) that an investigation about your children's safety and welfare has been opened. Whether you are going through a divorce or a parenting matter, the involvement of DCFS means that there is a real possibility that you will lose control over decisions related to your children including parenting schedule, decision making, holiday parenting time, travel, and more. In this episode, our host, Kimberly A. Cook, discusses what to do when DCFS is involved in your case, including:

  • Understanding the role of DCFS;

  • Responding to a notification from DCFS and what not to do;

  • Getting support to navigate the DCFS process and why going at it alone is not the plan;

  • The impact of DCFS involvement on credibility during a divorce or custody trial; and more.

Even if DCFS is not involved in your case, be sure to listen to this episode so that you are prepared with information in the off-chance that you need it during your divorce or parenting matter. This week we have a conversation with our girlfriend, Jenny "MamaFresh" LeFlore on being creative, flexible and being "real" about what "mama self-care is!" This is NOT you're mama's parenting! Times have changed and so has parenting. Yet, whether you are a stay-at-home mom or work outside the home, we are all just trying to do the best we can! For moms navigating parenting schedules due to a divorce or custody matter, maximizing quality time (when quantity may not be a reality) can make all the difference for the kids! This is the "Fresh Approach" to being a mama!

Jenny is the founder of the blog, Mama Fresh, which is dedicated to creating and igniting a diverse community where Mamas are celebrated! For more information about Jenny "MamaFresh" LeFlore, please check her out:

Today’s “Grown Girl” Ceta Walters found herself struggling to breathe as she lost her sense of self in the day-to-day of motherhood. She was so busy putting everyone else that she wasn’t looking out for herself. She needed to find her oxygen mask. And, she found it with the creation of her lifestyle blog, Clark and Stone, which has become her space to share where her love for fashion, travel and motherhood come together. But, as we know in life, even when oxygen is flowing, there are times in life when it’s still hard to breathe. With the creation of her Ceta Diaries series, Ceta shares the vulnerability of navigating motherhood, a breast cancer diagnosis and a divorce all while trying to maintain a sense of self with grace, grit and glamour!
