This episode of the OneTalk Podcast features Harley, the host of The Grey Man Podcast. Harley shares his deeply personal and inspiring journey from a tumultuous childhood marked by instability and neglect to overcoming significant adversity.
Harley experienced a childhood where his alcoholic and sex worker mother, who struggled with her own challenges, provided little stability. He moved frequently between Brisbane and Western Australia, often cared for by various family members, including an older sister who had to mature rapidly. His early memories are fragmented, often filled with a sense of displacement and a lack of a consistent "home."
Harley recounts instances of homelessness and involvement with street culture during his teenage years in WA, particularly in Fremantle and Geraldton. He describes a period where he felt like an outsider, observing "normal" family life from the periphery. A pivotal moment came when he was around 10-12 years old, realizing the extent of his mother's struggles and the unconventional nature of his upbringing.
The narrative highlights several significant turning points and challenges:
Harley's podcast, The Grey Man, aims to bridge the gap in understanding between the veteran and civilian communities. It serves as a platform for veterans to share their stories, find connection, and demonstrate that overcoming hardship and mental health challenges is possible, inspiring others facing similar struggles. The episode emphasizes the importance of speaking out, finding community, and normalizing conversations around mental health and personal challenges. Harley's journey is a testament to resilience, the power of hope, and the ability to forge a positive path forward despite immense adversity.

On today's episode we're joined by Jim Penman.
Jim Penman is an author, mentor, speaker, and businessman. Known as one of Australia’s most iconic entrepreneurs, he started a side gardening job with $24—a side job that eventually evolved into Jim’s Group, the biggest lawn mowing company worldwide and the largest franchise business in the southern hemisphere with over 40 divisions and more than 5,000 franchisees.
A graduate from the prestigious La Trobe University, where he received a PhD in history, Dr. Penman has also written numerous books on the cultural and economic decline that threaten many parts of the world.
He spends millions of dollars annually on research to improve human life all over the world.
Jim is the Author of the following books:
Epigenetics & CharacterIn ‘Epigenetics and Character’, Dr Jim Penman details a revolutionary new theory about why societies prosper and why they decline. He shows how history is driven by changes in the character of ordinary people, rather than by economic and political forces or by the actions of leaders. The key to all this is epigenetics, the study of how the environment affects our genes. Dr Penman draws on history, biology, anthropology and economics to explain the real drivers of social change, and how evolutionary mechanisms designed to adapt animal social behaviour to changing food conditions shape human history.
BIOHISTORY ACADEMIC VERSION: Biohistory is a revolutionary new theory that explores the biological and behavioural underpinnings of social change, including the rise and fall of civilisations. Informed by significant research into the physiological basis of behaviour conducted by author Dr Jim Penman and a team of scientists at RMIT University and the Florey Institute in Melbourne, Australia, Biohistory examines how a complex interplay between culture and biology has shaped civilisations from the Roman Empire to the modern West

Today's episode we're joined by Dr. Mark Williams
Dr Mark A Williams is a world known Neuroscientist and has worked with thousands of students, teachers, health professionals, and company directors keen to understand how their brain works, how to perform optimally and maintain a healthy brain.
He regularly runs programs on the neuroscience of learning, the neuroscience of emotions, how to hack your habits, how our brains create our reality, and the impact of modern technologies on our brains.
Dr Mark’s book The Connected Species: How understanding the evolution of our brain can change the world will be published internationally in 2023.
Dr Mark has an extensive academic background in brain research and teaching. He is a professor of cognitive neuroscience, with over 25 years of experience conducting behavioral and brain imaging research focusing on how we interact with each other, how we learn, and how we think. He has taught the fundamentals of neuroscience to thousands of undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as publishing more than 70 articles in high-impact international journals and co-editing a book. He is an editorial board member of several international journals, has been awarded numerous high-profile fellowships and grants, and has worked at MIT in the USA and multiple universities in Australia.
Not a typical ‘academic’, Dr Mark comes from a disjointed family background. He hated school and experienced first-hand the challenges of getting ahead in a small town in Victoria. To describe these years as ‘colorful’ is an understatement. Aged 25, something changed.
Mark returned to learning, completed his HSC, and began what became a rapid rise to academic achievement, including being awarded both the CJ Martin and the Queen Elisabeth II Fellowships. He became fascinated with how we interact, learn and think. Mark went on to study brain plasticity, attention disorders, autism, prosopagnosia (face blindness), dementia, and eating disorders. He has been at the cutting edge of developing computational brain imaging analysis and the adoption of new technologies like virtual reality in research.Dr Mark draws on his extensive scientific background to work with schools, companies, and the public to develop evidence-based practices using neuroscience to enhance our education, work, and personal lives. His work has been highlighted in the media internationally including in The Guardian, The New York Times, and the Economist, and he is involved in several popular science documentaries. To find Dr. Mark Williams:https://www.drmarkwilliams.com
