Bret sat down with Pinballpreneur David Yopp & Restauranteur Tony Westmoreland to discuss their new collaborative endeavor called Flip Side. A lot of us have played on David's pinball machines all across Memphis, but now they've all found a HQ at this new Crosstown location. Flip Side will be open in early March to be a Pinball Restaurant & Bar with something for everyone to enjoy and new things to try.

We didn't even mention the beautiful custom-designed bar top with a full drink menu to be served across it. They even have fruit and fresh drinks to be made (super dope) so everyone has an option.

Jordan Beatty, and his incredibly talented wife Lee Anna Beatty, will be taking over the kitchen to offer beautifully prepared food of all kinds for the masses to enjoy through lunch & dinner time.

This is not a spot to miss & will end up being not only a location for Memphians to enjoy themselves, drink, eat, and game, but a national spot that hosts the beautiful subculture of Pinball professionals.

Nick Monty, aka NightOwl, recently recorded his 5 song EP here at Station 8 Productions. After playing music in Memphis for many years and making waves in his project called Wilted, he made his way to Texas. We don't see him around Memphis as much anymore, but the important thing is that he never lost the reverberating sounds of creation in his mind and kept creating in the time that has passed.

His music has been described as "Dream Pop", but when you listen to his recently released single "Mountains" that's now available on all streaming platforms, you're immediately captivated with the perfect harmony of the guitars and thump of the bass regardless of how it is defined. Nick was joined by fellow Memphis guitarist José Campos and bassist Meg Goddard to bring the music to life.

In the podcast we sat down with him and discussed the past, present, and future of music for him as an individual and how his time in Memphis served him as he grew up.

NightOwl will be releasing a few singles off the EP, Think About It, before it's release later this year. Follow him below!

Bret sat down with Dakota Jackson, Conner Blakley, and Bryton Wallace of Music by KOTA after their performance for Live at the 8 to go more in depth with the Jackson, TN gentlemen to learn more about their history as a band and as individuals.

As discussed in this podcast, Music by KOTA was a bit of a lightning strike of fate when they found each other in the process of pursuing degrees in music and audio in Jackson, TN. They began at a very young age and played with a handful of musicians, but things have finally settled with the lineup of musicians and it shows. Since coming to Memphis, they've already made a name for themselves (even whilst experiencing a pandemic...) and are climbing ever higher. If you haven't spotted music by KOTA just yet, make sure to watch the Live at the 8 performance and catch them at a show around town here in Memphis, TN!

We sit down with The Pop Ritual's very own Colin, Michelle, and Scott to discuss how we got to today. From the time the band was conceived in 2014 and made their first release, the band has become a well known force of music and ambient experience in Memphis, TN and beyond.

It's easy to appreciate the passion inside of these individuals and the investment they put into their music. The time it takes to put together music that is so highly textured is incredible, but it makes for something amazing that is meant to create a subjective experience.

In the words of Colin, "Art, music..it's all very subjective. I don't know that once you create a piece of work that it's all about your feelings any longer. You're offering that up to the world to have something to relate to. Whether a person sees a reflection of themselves within that song or touches an emotional nerve that they can relate to, it's so unique and individual in terms of experience that the only place you'll ever find those answers is within yourself and your own experience."

Don't miss the live performance if you've just tuned into the podcast.

Another preservation of Memphis music history was had this week as we sat down with another Memphis Legend, Tony Adams. We spoke about his history in the city and how it felt to grow up in the movement of music in Memphis.

Hearing how it all came about with just some young folks who came together every second they could to make music in each other's back yards for no other reason than that they loved what they did was incredibly inspiring. Tony makes his living in the music industry and still lays tracks down regularly.

If you haven't heard our first chapter of the Legends Series that featured Brad Webb, you should check it out! It's up to all of us to continue the music and momentum of Memphis energy through making it and supporting it. We find out more and more every day that the current generation is doing just that, so enjoy a glimpse into when it all began!

Keep being great, Memphis.

Mark Schreck and Tony Westmoreland joined us for a podcast for The Hum: Discover 901 Series.

https://901growlers.com

Mark has been working on making Memphis live shows happen since he was 15 years old. Now, as the GM of Growlers, he is taking the next step in his passion for making Memphis music happen in 2021 and beyond. He was joined by Memphis business owner & entrepreneur Tony Westmoreland to talk about how live music has been developing pre and post covid in our city. Tony's businesses (restaurants & venues make up the majority) have not only survived this last year, but expanded with the intention of coming back stronger than ever.

And so far that seems to be the case. Growlers and its partner venue that Tony acquired in the last year called the Carolina Watershed are hitting live shows in force and supporting Memphis bands while they do it. In fact, just last week, they sold out limited capacity shows before the first artist was even finished performing. They have a lot more planned, to be sure.

The incredible thing? They're taking care of bands while they do it. The bands are responsible for paying for the door and the sound, but they keep the rest of the ticket sales. It's amazing to see a local business and venue giving such a great opportunity for bands that have not prospered from the last year as we all continue to take the next steps in re-defining live music in the world, and in Memphis.

Besides bands? Comedy, burlesque, DJ's, and beyond. They have it going on and we're excited to see what else they bring to the 901 as we move forward!

Find out more about the venue and upcoming shows at the link/social media below!

Jessica Shea talks about who she is and what she's about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJ_UrVf56So

In a rare combination of deep insights into counseling, mental health, mycology, & success in business; this 901 entrepreneur is the paragon of progressiveness and accomplishments. Jessica Shea's history was fascinating as we learned about her journey from becoming a teen mom in high school, to everyone around her expecting an off beat career path in arts or child care, to already being a business owner at age 19, to a master's degree in counseling just a short time later. This would then give her the ability to create Forward Counseling; a, you guessed it, forward thinking mental health counseling group here in the mid-south with aim to expand across the country using the most mindful and progressive treatments to complex issues that so many of us experience in the modern world.

Now that she has taken a step back from counseling full time and passed the reigns to a team that revels in the company culture, she has focused her efforts on her non-profit business consulting company called You Can Sit With Us. In the video with Jessica, you'll see what that means to her. While we will be releasing more content about this soon, keep an eye out later this year for the Memphis Mushroom Festival that Jessica started last year!

Check out the live performance from Odd here at Station 8:

https://youtu.be/2a5xTcjIb3E

Origins of Odd:

From the inspiration at the first beat, to the first time he was making music and atmosphere for local Memphis franchise Gould's Salon Spa and even arrived in commercials for Coca-Cola...the Origin of Odd didn't happen overnight. Odd started working in Music Production and working with other artists to make them something great. Obstacles arose and in a period of being uninspired by the world around him, Odd sat down and wrote a short story. This story was a snapshot of this moment in his life, but ended up being the foundation for his future.

His passion for film lead him to find the movie Frank. Then Castaway was on TV later that week in that iconic scene... All of a sudden, it was clear. The short story and the new desire to create all made sense. The idea of Odd Wilson was born. How did he start making music as Odd Wilson? Why is his lo-fi so popular? Where did DJ'ing come in? Local Memphis Artist, Patricia Wilson, from the Memphis College of Art teamed up with Odd to take him from logo to life. Hear his story and how it all unfolded by clicking play.

Brad Webb joins us as a Memphis legend to discuss music and Memphis. We talk about guitars, old stories, learning to play music, learning to record and prouce music, and breaking the all the rules. We even get to hear three tracks recorded by Brad himself at his home studio.

Not much for banter but still want to hear the music? The first song, "Lover's Moon" is at 36 minutes. Following that is a Blues/Reggae jam called, "Who You With Tonight?". Lastly he shows us one he made this last year with Bruce Baker. This is great music from Brad Webb, who describes himself as just one spoke in the Memphis wheel.

Brad still makes music all the time and still teaches guitar to students that want to learn from one of the best. If you're interested, reach out to us!
