Welcome to season 2 of the Treasuring Christ Podcast! In this new season, Brittany will be chatting about how to practically treasure Christ. In this episode, she is talking to author Christina Fox about how and why to fear the Lord. Fear of the Lord is not only the beginning of wisdom, but the very heart posture needed to treasure Christ above all.

Christina grew up in Maryland and attended Covenant College in undergrad where she met her husband. They’ve been married almost twenty-five years and have two teenage sons. She has a Master’s in Counseling Psychology and worked in the counseling field with children and families for a number of years before she started writing. Christina currently serves on her denomination’s national women’s ministry team helping to develop resources, plan conferences, and equip women’s ministries in local churches. She’s a speaker and an author of multiple books, including her two recent books A Holy Fearand Tell God How You Feel. She and her family currently live in the suburbs outside Atlanta, GA.

We love theology. It’s one of our favourite topics to discuss and debate. As believers, we should each love theology because it’s how we learn about God and his good news. But could we possibly turn the study of theology into an idol? Can we make our love of doctrine less about God and more about serving ourselves? Listen in as Brittany and Lara discuss how we can recognize this idol in our lives and how to treasure Christ more.

Comfort and control. Two things most of us desire, right? We want to be comfortable so we in turn want to be in control. And there’s a degree to which this is reasonable—but it can also overwhelm and overtake us like any idol does. Many of us know the “hussle” and “girl power” culture we are currently living in. We are powerful women who can accomplish anything we put our minds to. Because of that, there are high expectations for us as women: You should not only be a successful business women, but your home better be beautiful and spotless, your children better be involved in all the extra-curricular activities, and there better be a healthy, home-cooked meal on the table at suppertime. You’re supposed to be the Proverbs 31 Woman after all, right? Up before dawn, selling purple fabric, trading land, cooking meals, and so on. We don’t want to feel the shame of falling short in comparison to all the moms who are apparently living that perfect, productive life. To escape that shame, we can at times turn productivity into an idol rather than a good, godly habit. Listen in as Brittany and Lara discuss how we can recognize this idol and how we can learn to treasure Christ more.

“Those bound by the yoke of the law are like servants assigned certain tasks for each day by their masters. These servants think they have accomplished nothing and dare not appear before their masters unless they have fulfilled the exact measure of their tasks . But sons, who are more generously and candidly treated by their fathers, do not hesitate to offer them incomplete and half-done and even defective works, trusting that their obedience and readiness of mind will be accepted by their fathers, even though they have not quite achieved what their fathers intended. Such children ought we to be, firmly trusting that our services will be approved by our most merciful Father, however small, rude, and imperfect these may be … And we need this assurance in no slight degree, for without it we attempt everything in vain.” (Calvin, Institutes 3.19.5).

Marriage is a beautiful gift from God, but even more importantly it is a picture of God's gospel. But sometimes we distort this picture and turn marriage and other relationships into an idol. Whether single and longing for marriage, in a relationship with a boyfriend, or married, we are each capable of turning this good gift of companionship into something we worship rather than something that reminds us of the gospel. Listen in as Brittany and Lara discuss how and why we idolize these relationships and how we can learn to treasure Christ more.

But this desire easily tumbles into an idol when we begin fearing man more than we fear God who rules over all. God provides all things for us, and anything we have first comes from his gracious hand. But at times we can feel like he's dealt less graciously with us than he has others. Like our hearts are often incited to do, we begin to idolize these good gifts and enviously grasp for them. Listen in as Brittany and Lara discuss how we can learn to treasure Christ more and learn to steward rather than idolize the resources God gives us.

Had I not changed jobs, we would still be living in that house we were sure we’d grow old in, with the luxuries that we once had. We would also be living in a hurting marriage, and it would be a house I was rarely in. We’d leave a legacy of wealth but not of love. So was the cost worth it? Yes, undoubtedly was [...] Friends, no matter what your financial status is, does your lifestyle show that you are living as if this earth is your home? Do your decisions suggest that what your marriage and family need most is earthly wealth and comfort?” (Together Through the Storms, p. 54).

Many of us know the common buzz words such as, "clean eating," and living a "clean, healthy lifestyle." Is it possible that some of us have made it something to bring ourselves glory and comfort instead? Listen in as Brittany and Lara discuss how a good thing like healthy living can become a destructive idol in our lives and how we can find freedom in treasuring Christ.

Scripture tells us that God created all things and is deserving of all praise. Yet, even as Christians, we're often tempted to love earthly things more than the true Treasure, our Savior, Jesus Christ.

In this first episode, Brittany and Lara share their mission: to encourage women to make Jesus preeminent in their life—that they will be spurred on to fervently seek him every day and delight in him.

Brittany and Lara explain what an idol is and what it looks like to treasure Christ more. They also give a glimpse into what future episodes will look like in this first season and share a bit about who they are.
