Another podcast for ye. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! This episode on "Super 8" has nothing to do with Thanksgiving or cheap motels. Well, I suppose you could draw some correlation to cheap motels. This film is made to look like it has a 70's vibe, and a lot of motels were built in the 70's and 80's or whatever and haven't updated much so they still kinda carry that general aesthetic. Speaking of aesthetics, there are few aesthetics that just make me generally uncomfortable as Alf. Frickin creeps me out. I can't put a finger on it, but Alf is just an unseemly looking character. Like a rotten roll of shag carpet in your grandma's basement that nobody wants to touch because it was ripped up in like 1978 and it's been there for too long and it's kind of a fixture of the place and an eyesore....
Little pun for the WWII nerds out there. If you know, you know. Exciting episode for a few reasons. 1. We're back (ish) 2. I finally fixed the dang Philmosophical bumper so it's not so hard on the ears 3. we drop some thoughts on the Rings of Power (current event commentary sellouts? Not so fast.) 4. we review a fantastic yet sobering movie about the true story of Desmond Doss: "Hacksaw Ridge." Also, Halloween release day. I don't care. Halloween is for kids, adults who refuse to grow up, and emos. There, I said it. The truth hurts. Be a Christmas enjoyer like a normal person. But not too early. You know who you are.
Deal with it, John. We watched Thor 4 and kinda liked it. That aside, it's not as if we have a gap in episodes because a certain editor had a brain fart and completely forgot to try and upload the episode or anything for an entire week. That'd be crazy. Almost as crazy as the fact Thor: Love and Thunder isn't trash.
The internet drives people to do crazy things. Or, rather, the desire for real human connection drives people to do crazy things. Like take an unannounced break from your podcast for several weeks, or think everyone around you is an animal and accidentally uncover several conspiracy theories in the process. You know, like you do. In this week's topic, Odd Taxi.
THE NATIONAL SALTCAST SERVICE HAS ISSUED A WARNING FOR INCREASED LEVELS OF SALT IN YOUR PALLADIAN PAPISTS PODCAST. THAT'S RIGHT FOLKS, IT'S THE LONG-AWAITED DEBUT OF THE SALTCAST BUMPER. YEAH THAT'S RIGHT, WE'RE GETTING SALTY ABOUT A FEW DIFFERENT THINGS AND STARTING A NEW FORMAT. AND YES, FAITH WAS OK WITH THE ANNOUNCEMENT, WE CHECKED.
Indoctrination and propaganda are some serious business. You wouldn't expect heavy subject matter and comedy to mix, but yet somehow in Taika Waititi's "Jojo Rabbit" they blend in a rather thought-provoking way. See, I can write more serious descriptions.
If you ain't got no radio, you can still listen to this here iPod Broadcast on any of them newfangled devices you so please to make use of in this fine country, I do tell you hwat boah. Now iff'n you desire to satiate and dare I say - I do dare say, ingratiate yo self - I say here now listen to this episode of the Palladian Papists as they discuss gopher and those cinematic masterminds the Coen brothers themselves, yessah, the Coen bothers I say, and their just dandy and sophisticated motion picture - with sound mind you, a bona fide talkie, "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?"
We're rekindling the flame of the Dark Souls [Dank Sus (Patent pending){just kidding...unless...?}] universe in this week's discussion of Dark Souls III. I had to go back and re-listen to this episode a bunch because I didn't want the title and the joke in the bit to be conflicting. That's just the level of effort I put into this pod for the 2 of you. Be grateful. Or not. Do what you want. But if you want me to like you...
There. That's the title. I hope you're happy Nathan. Actually, overall, I was happy to see Ewan McGregor as Obi Wan again, not gonna lie. My question is how on earth or Tatooine for that matter he cooks that giant fish meat or whatever that stuff is that's definitely not rubber, so shut up, to where it's edible. Is it an animal? A fish? Sand seal a la Breath of the Wild? 0/10, unanswered meat questions.
Nathan's birthday has come and gone as of the uploading of this video, so he gets to talk about video games and one of his favorite things at that. Axiom Verge. Which brings up a lot of questions, like are we truly conscious people popping from reality to reality or are we just pixelated brains being stimulated in a digital jar? No joke, Reilly and I both said that absentmindedly and half-awake said it out loud at the same time while lifting weights early in the morning in college, minus the pixelated part but the original quote whatever it is if you follow me.
Run. We're reviewing Demon Slayer. Bada bing, bada boom, skippidy bop mmmmmdada, here we go. Can't think of much of a description this week. Deal with it.
It's our eleventy-first episode! We don't remember half as many bits as we would like, and like less than half of them half as much as they deserve. Anyway, we talk not about Lord of the Rings, but "Megamind" by Dreamworks.
The Benedict that produces the eggs is probably from the same farm where chocolate cows produce the chocolate milk. The Cumberbatch. What doesn't involve farms whatsoever (or eggs really) is the Disney Plus series "The Mysterious Benedict Society."
We bucked the Podcast Formula (rated E for everyone) by accident so Future James (Rated M) (TM) had to backtrack and do a little bit of cleanup. Speaking of a lot of cleanup and attempted government coverup, we review Brad Bird's animated feature "The Iron Giant" in this week's episode.
In the next installment of our unofficial COMM 101 we're going to talk about public speaking, particularly of the royal variety. Watch a head of state ascend to a state of leadership and overcome a speech impediment to unite a country in the face of great struggle. Successfully. Ahem. In "The King's Speech."
Good morning class. I know you're all probably hammered and hungover but it's time for your COMM 101 class. Yes, 10 out of the 100 students are actually still showing up for class, and I've barely even presented any new information since I handed out the syllabus months ago. I'll cut you guys a break. Let's just watch and discuss Arrival in our class today. That good? Good. No you don't get extra credit for being here.
Inside you, there are (at least) two Oscar Isaacs. Which one dominates your life depends upon which one you feed. But if you manage to get the two of them to get along then a more murderous one will manifest and silently assassinate the cheesy metaphor in the back of a limo while dead birdman watches. That's right, we're talking about Moon Knight on Disney Plus.
We're talking about Fr. Stu. No we're not bandwagoning on a popular-in-the-Catholic-sphere-right-now movie trends and stuff, shut up. Mark Wahlberg didn't give us an advanced copy to review and interview him unlike some people, ahem. But yeah, John talks to us about Fr. Stu because he's seen it.
It's the 60's. Make of that what you will. Self discovery, Russians, profligacy whatever that means and 1 like = 1 box top to educate a poor child with one whole slice of cardboard. That's right, it's "The Queen's Gambit."
Don't worry it's not what you think. Unless what you think of is an existential crisis war by humanity against an alien race forcing children to undergo training to become strategic masterminds to gain the upper hand in said war, then yeah, you got it right. Good job. We're talking about Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game."
You see that there green thing? That's a lawn. And Clint Eastwood would really, really, really, really, politely as evidenced by the gun, like you to do the opposite of being on it. This week's episode is on Clint Eastwood's la- ahem- film, "Gran Torino."
I, um. have...questions. And the show doesn't seem to have any clear answers. Just high-brow modern art and teenage boy...stuff. Whoo boy. We're talking about Neon Genesis Evangelion today.
That's right, our dear 2 listeners, ladies and gentlemen, it's the one hundredth episode of the Palladian Papists! Yes, we have made it this far. And we're going to keep 'er rolling. Enjoy this retrospective/introspective/future-spective of the podcast!
Yeah mates, we's talkin' 'bout these there Marvel Spiderman movies, the MCU ones to be exact. Tom Holland is a jolly decent Spiderman, even though he's a friggin Brit. We'll forgive him though.
Even though it means "greedy" or whatever I felt like using the word "rapacious" cuz I wanted the alliteration, so deal with it. This week, we're talking about "Groundhog Day." Even though it means "greedy" or whatever I felt like using the word "rapacious" cuz I wanted the alliteration, so deal with it. This week, we're talking about "Groundhog Day." Even though it means "greedy" or whatever I felt like using the word "rapacious" cuz I wanted the alliteration, so deal with it. This week, we're talking about "Groundhog Day." I'm going to keep repeating this until you subscribe. Even though it means "greedy" or whatever....
I'm not saying it's Mel Gibson but...it's Mel Gibson. And Joaquin Phoenix. Ever since I saw this movie, every time I see an unattended glass of water, I am comforted by the fact I can just fling that sucker at an alien. Chemical warfare is ok if it's against a green man from outer space right? Anyhoo.....We're reviewing M. Night Shyamalan's "Signs."
Get weady fow some wacky adwentuwes with Docta Wiwey and his shenanigans that thweaten the wowld. Anyway, this is the comics, you don't have to worry about the bad dub. We're discussing the Megaman comics.
2 out of 1,471,932 Janitors (/former janitors) recommend you take self-control and play Control. Also, one of the head developers is a pretty cool dude who was on the Ascension Press video game podcast, check him out.
Hey, if they can fly a helicopter on Mars why not under the water? Unimportant for the helicopter parent type that we discuss of course. Also, I have bad news for the local chapter of the Sharks Against Food support group when Lent rolls around...Anyway, we're talking about Pixar's "Finding Nemo."
Want to see Chris Evans play the spoiled rich boy instead of America's hero? Want to see a knife chair but are afraid to Google it? Want to see psychosomatic nausea that is plot relevant? Want to see Christopher Plummer in one of his last roles? Look no further than audibly seeing it through our eyes in this week's review of "Knives Out."
So, is there a succession order for Punxsutawney Phil? Like if something happens to him, who's the next in line to declare when the end of winter would be? Asking for a friend. Anyway, you're better off just following Catholic traditions, they make more sense. And listening to our episode on Kyoto Animation's "A Silent Voice."
Good soldiers follow orders. Good soldiers follow orders. Good soldiers subscribe/like/follow. Good soldiers make on-the-nose lame jokes. Good soldiers listen to our episode on Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
I...I just...can't. Seriously. It's like Rafiki from the Lion King married an elk and this was their kid. Unsettling, this guy. Maybe that was the point? I dunno, it's hard to get a bead in the first viewing on what's going on in Studio Ghibli's "Princess Mononoke."
We're back from our hiatus. Are you not entertained? Muscle Crow is goin ham on dem other fighters. Cuz his wife and sweet baby boi done get merc'd by his one time kinda sorta foster brother Joaquin Pheonix guy. If Maximus toppled the Caesar capital of Arizona for vengeance, what would you do for a Klondike bar? (Not sponsored btw.) Find out in this week's review of Ridley Scott's film "Gladiator."
Uno reverse Ratatouille! Da boi controlz da Ratz. We're talking about "A Plague Tale: Innocence" in this week's episode.
When making first contact with alien creatures from a different dimension who start munching on your coworkers, instead of seeking to clear up a misunderstanding, just speak softly and grab the nearest crowbar and just go all hog wild. Pro tip. You're welcome. We're reviewing Valve's first two "Half Life" games in this episode.
"My Hero Academia" this week. You know, if I had a quirk, it would probably be the ability to monologue ad infinitum. I mean, if you read through a lot of these podcast descriptions, it becomes evident that's a propensity of mine. But anyhow, good show. We do get into the weeds a bit, so be warned, it's a longer one. Anyone can cook a hero. Wait.
It'll make sense if you make it to the end. Of the podcast. What did you think I was referring to? Anyhow, we're talking about Susanna Clarke's "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell." Yes, I left the period out of the Mr because that's how the Brits do it. If you're mad about it, take it up with the queen.
Believe it or not, snipe are a real bird: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snipe Pixar's "Up" is a great movie. And that's what we're talking about today when my computer isn't deciding you know what, how about I just stop recording at a random moment and we don't discover it until like 15 minutes later and have to circle back around. If you're just bored with my voice, computer, why didn't you just say something? Go listen to the podcast, I'm having a talking-to with this here hunk of machinery.
OH YEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH We're talking about the indie game Cave Story. Spoiler alert: Nathan really really really really likes this game. Buckle up, buckaroos.
A completely different take on brain-eating nefarious creatures in Promised Neverland. A very different take on the whole idea of Neverland too. Instead of fighting silly buffoonish pirates and flying around on pixie dust, not unlike a weekend in some high rise apartments if you catch my drift, try running away from man-eating demons. Also, the second season doesn't exist. Much like my ability to string together coherent thoughts in these descriptions.
Seriously, the goons in Rocksteady's Batman Arkham series games say "It's da Bat" or just "Da Bat" so many flippin times it makes your ears bleed. Or it would if it wasn't so cathartic to go all bat-crazy on them. But if you want to press X to feel like Batman, these games are the games for you. Also if you don't sneak around in the dark and mutter to yourself "I'm Batman" at least once during a playthrough, you're doing it wrong. Just saying.
Yeah that's right lads and ladies, we're circling back to the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Got a problem with that? Huh? Didn't think so. Short description this week. My treat.
Did you know that dolphins are technically whales? They're part of the class of whales that are toothed, as opposed to baleen whales which have the brushy brushy mouth bits that are for capturing plankton. Toothed whales eat fishes and sometimes sea lions if you're an orca. The more you know. They apparently give oil from their blubber that the civilization in the Dishonored video games. Imagine if English, American, and Japanese foreign policy/attitudes about whales/governance had a baby, and you've got these folks. Enjoy.
At this point, adventure movies belong in a museum. Like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas' Indiana Jones films. Should protect them from becoming extinct, rare as they are. Speaking of rare, this is gonna be a short description, my treat. No need to thank me. Not like you will. Or should. I'm unhinged. There's no editorial control here, just me spouting off whatever I want in the description, which is no longer as short as I promised. Oh well. If you're reading this, first of all: Why? Second of all, listen to the episode already.
What is time but a spindsy-windsy. A spindsy-windsy where matriarchic control of the yin-yangy zippy zappy magic is a hummin' along and people be like let's start an adventure. Also, if you see a shiny dagger lying on the ground, leave it there. It's either cursed, a murder weapon and then you'd be an evidence tampering felon, or somebody just lost it and you should leave it there before it hollows you out. Yeah that's right, I fixated on that plot point for the excessively long description of our episode talking about the first three Wheel of Time books by Robert Jordan.
Screw your horror games, just look at the frickin MOON FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. This game just has an aura of unease that you're sure to...enjoy? No worries, the game is fun. If you don't think to hard about that monkey. Ah. Poor Mohnke. Anyway, we're talking about The Legend of Zelda: Majora's mask.
Shankshonk Redonkshonk reminds you to get busy listenin' or get busy subscribin'. That's right folks, we're reviewing the "Shawskank Redemption."
We're joined this week by Adam Carr of the "Unto the Breach Podcast" to discuss Pixar's Toy Story films! Reach for the sky and reach for the follow buttons on the links below. We're not aiming for the truck, Schmoe. We've all said a lot of things that James is going to regret. I promise, if you make it to the end of this episode talking about Valve's "Portal" games, there will be cake. Won't that be fun? I bet you won't make it though. I'm making a note here: huge success. For me. Because I get all the cake. And you won't get any. You monster. Not like you'd need it anyway. I'm sure you have more important things to do. Like Science.
Apologies for the somewhat corrupted audio and clinking of ice cubes. And for uploading the podcast late. The implications of car universe are quite immense. This is the crap that happens when Nathan leaves. Not a good transition. To be completely honest I'm phoning in this description, it's been a long week and my mind is shot so enjoy the podcast. Also, moral of the story, be careful with your personal information and face, it could save your life.
Don't take the title too seriously. Not like you do if you're listening to this podcast regularly, but don't say I didn't warn you. We do want you to take this seriously enough to give it a listen, although let's be honest you do have to have sort of a lighthearted attitude when viewing this content. All that burying the lead aside, we're talking about "The Keys to the Kingdom" novel series by Garth Nix.
If every podcast is good, then none of them are. Except for ours of course. Listen to this discussion of Pixar's "The Incredibles."
Minus the boxing and Clint Eastwood, this Million Dollar Baby needs to be protected by a space samurai-knight-cowboy-bounty hunter-dudeman to protect him from the monsters that want "the Child." That's right ladies and gentlefolk, we are talking about Disney's "The Mandalorian."
Off we fly into the far reaches of space in the definitely not Halo, (or Halo ripped this off idk) but humans be fighting aliens and the metaphysical crap hits the metaphysical and existential Aristotelian fan if I remember correctly I don't know but how long do you think I can keep this run on sentence going you're still reading it in pain aren't you you grammar sicko I bet you can't stand it but you really want to see what happens next when I end this sentence.
Following the recent 77th Anniversary of the Normandy landings on D-Day, we discuss Steven Spielberg's war epic "Saving Private Ryan."
Things get whacky real fast. And we mean fast. And whacky. And Real. And circular. Cars have circular wheels in Mad Max: Fury Road, and that's what we're talking about today. Seriously, what is it with Australians? They made the original. Has anyone checked to see if they're ok?
Chief is concerned about his AI hologram waifu. But instead of putting a ring on it, he decides to put himself on a ring and blow it up. Multiple times. Enough puns you say? How fanatical of you. You know what else is fanatical? The Covenant in the Halo games. Which is like you. So you're basically the Covenant. I hope you're happy.
The power of Ben Shapiro compels you. Well, not really. At the end of the day you just want to be cool and read Ayn Rand and smoke the great leaf with your buddies on 4chan. Regardless, that's sort of a tangent. We are talking about Code Geass today. So have fun. And go to Confession (TM).
It's sidekick time but they get their own movie. Or miniseries. Or whatever. Listen to our hamfisted explanation of the synopsis and decently ok discussion of Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
They're in the trees. The lights of the forest I mean. I know we did this bit a little already but whatever it's my podcast I do what I want. You can do what you want and listen to our episode reviewing the Ori games by Moon Studios.
Would we make this podcast if we could do it again? For the two of you, a thousand times over. Thank'ee for listening to this episode on "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini.
*Trailer voice: "Sometimes you need a friend to get you through the hard times. And sometimes, you need hard times to get through your friends. Sometimes, your friends need to get through you...Don't do dishes for old people, apparently, especially not in A WAY OUT." (bwaaa.....)
Welcome to WandaVision on Disney+, with grief, loss, trauma, regret, and mental health issues that's fun for the whole family! Don't know which decade of TV sitcoms you like the best? Don't know what's going on? You will eventually at around episode 6 or so I think, I don't remember. Neither does Vision. Yet. If it is Vision. Or is it?
Oh bother, a spooky scary Tim Burton film. James will soldier through this one. At least it's not about Nightmare before the Giant Peach or the weird Batman film. That one was ok I guess. In any event, please follow us on our different podcast platforms and social media, or else we will be...DESTITUTE.
You knew it was coming. But the Fairies certainly didn't. We invite you into this episode to examine the Artemis Fowl BOOK SERIES ahem by Eoin Colfer. Good luck pronouncing that correctly the first time you read it. Unless you're from Ireland, good for you. Wait, what was I talking about? Who are you?
I see Bruce Willis' hair. Maybe that's just what I wanted to see though. Wait, is it cold in here or is that just me? Anyone listening? Hello?
High school kids are kinda mean. And apparently even death doesn't change that. Touche Goths. Anyway we're talking about Angel Beats. Not by Dr. Dre. But it is Anime. Make those into lyrics for a rap song.
Giddy up ladies and gentlefolk, because this here patronizing faux cowboy accent is going to git on down to bidness wit dis here episode of teh Papists covering that there Red Dead Redemption 2 computer game or some such.
