For every holiday we celebrate, there are those who dread it.The holiday season comes with societal expectations that everyone needs to be happy. However for every person who is excited about family gatherings, decorations and gifts, there is another who is secretly wishing the upcoming weeks would disappear.
It is important to remember that struggles do not take a “holiday” during the holiday season. Often those who are struggling find their emotions magnified by the pressure of the season. The continued flow of daily life does not stop as we enter the holiday season. Each day there is someone who is providing care for someone who is sick, grieving the death of a loved one, coming to terms with the loss of divorce or job or even learning about their own illness. Often those who are struggling find their emotions magnified by the pressure of the season.
As a grief counselor, Sheryl often found her clients worrying about the holidays as early as August and some clients often wished February would simply disappear. In today's episode, Sheryl shares the ABC's of Coping With Grief During The Holidays which she developed with a coworker while working as a grief. counselor.
You or someone you love will likely find one or all of the suggestions and tips helpful.

Although we each will need to have different things in our personal toolbox, in today's episode, Sheryl shares a few basic coping tools we each need to have in our tool box (think of it like having a hammer and a screwdriver). What are the thoughts you have about yourself on a daily basis?
Do you struggle with such thoughts such as
"I'm not smart enough to apply for that job."
"I have never been able to stick to a routine."
"I'm clumsy and can't dance."
"I'm too old."
"No one will want to date me after my divorce."
Our thoughts are endless..... When you and I have a thought over and over it eventually becomes our belief.
This belief becomes how we view ourselves, others and the world.
Our beliefs regularly limit us and hold us back.
Because seriously, are you really not smart, that clumsy and no one wants to date you?"
Everything in life, from how we see things, how we feel about them and how we react to them is determined by our subconscious belief system which is at the core of who we are.
In this episode, Sheryl discusses how we can become aware of limiting beliefs that we are not even aware of and how we can begin to change our belief system. It is time to stop holding yourself back.

Do you know where you are going?
Do you know how you are getting there? The greatest struggle most everyone has is being spefic in what goal or dream they want for themselves. The second struggle is believing there is one specific way to get to where one wants to be.
We easily become frustrated without specifics and we can equally become frustrated when it seems everyone else is getting there easier than we are.
Today Sheryl discusses how just as a GPS navigation system needs a specific destination and offers different routes; we need to have specific goals and realize our routes are going to need to be different.

" I don't know."
How often do you state it?
Do you allow others to state it to you?
When you don't know, do you take the time to slow down and find out or do you keep going because you know you will not like the answer?
Many of us do know about the answer about what we are dealing with and we are avoiding. Saying I don’t know and going on about your business means there doesn’t have to be a hard decision or choice made.

Pain tells us that something is wrong and where we need to focus. However, we typically ignore physical and emotional pain until we are unable to function.**
It is estimated that 1 in 5 Americans live with chronic pain - but an even larger number of individuals ignore pain every day that could easily be taken care of if treated on a physical and emotional level.
In today's episode, Sheryl discusses how we often live with physical pain for fear of discovering something horribly wrong when the treatment could be simple and short. In the same manner she explores how we often hold onto emotional pain for fear of addressing it and turn to buffering activities such as over eating, drinking, shopping and withdrawing.
Pain and discomfort are going to occur in our lives but when they become a part of our daily functioning we are not addressing what is screaming for attention. Not addressing the physical pain could eventually lead to a terminal diagnosis that could have been caught with a simple surgery in the beginning. Not addressing the emotional pain of an unhappy relationship or unsatisfying career can lead to chronic depression and opportunities never explored.
Come learn the importance of listening to your pain.

Today's episode is asking you for a favor! As we become older, we often do not speak to our parents on a regular basis. We become busy with our full time jobs, caring for kids, keeping our schedules running. We may not think about our parents (off having their own lives) but upon occasion. We may even be annoyed at times when they call "just wanting to check in".
After the death of Sheryl's Mother Barbara 7 years ago, she could no longer contact her mother for information on a recipe or to ask if her mother remembered. In honor of her Mother's Birthday on November 7th, she asks those lucky enough to still have their parents to call them. (or to call someone who has been significant)
In today's episode she shares how showing a small act of kindness such as making a phone call to your parents or another person can immediately make you feel better, ease anxiety and reduce stress.
