Episode nine is with Alyson Annan. A legend of the game of hockey, she is one of the few people to have been a world class player and a world class coach. As a player she had a ten year international career with the Australian Hockeyroos and stayed in the game after retirement. In 2018 she led the Dutch ladies team to victory in the London World Cup, before coaching the side to the Gold Medal in the 2020(1) Tokyo Olympic Games. Now Alyson is the Head Coach of the Chinese women’s hockey team, who won the Asian Games in 2023. In the same year Annan was named the FIH Women’s Coach of the Year. The Half Court Press Magazine has listed her as one of the six most iconic hockey coaches of all time. Episode eight is with Tom Barton, who has had an interestingly diverse coaching career. He is currently the head of the youth programmes at Edinburgh based Inverleith Hockey Club, which is a committee position. He is also a co-coach of the ladies first team in the Scottish Premiership. At the same time Barton is an international standard coach with the Cyprus Men’s Hockey Team. All of this he has achieved before the age of 30, whilst also playing in his club’s men’s first eleven. In this episode we chat about coaching styles and principles, how to engage players within a positive team culture, as well as how to coach junior, senior and elite level players.

Jean Danneberg is a goalkeeper for the German national team and Rot-Weiss Köln. He was a part of the World Cup winning side, where he made a name for himself as a penalty saving hero for his country. Amy Tennant is one of the goalies for the England and GB hockey teams. Currently, she plays her club hockey for Reading, but previously turned out for Großflottbeker THGC, in Hamburg, as well as East Grinstead and Bowdon HIghtown. Tommy Alexander is Scotland’s number one keeper. He is playing in the Bundesliga, in both the indoor and outdoor codes, for der Club an der Alster, having previously kept goal for UHC Hamburg, Indian Gymkhana and Reading HC. Hailing from Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape, Phumelala has been the first choice goalie for her country for several years playing in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, as well as the Tokyo 2020/1 Olympic Games, captaining the team in the latter two tournaments. Van Tonder, coming from capital city Pretoria, has travelled with her friend and team mate around the world as one of the other keepers in the programme, being a member of the squad in the 2018 World Cup. Marlise has also played in American collegiate system, whilst studying in the USA. In this conversation we chat about what makes a good goalie, their preference for protective kit and why the goalkeeper is the most important player on the pitch.

In episode two we hear from James Mazarelo of England and Great Britain, as well as Jess Buchanan of Scotland and the Great Britain Elite Development Programme (EDP). James Mazarelo hails from the Northern English city of Manchester, where he started his hockey career with local club Bowdon, before moving on to Loughborough Students. Now he plays his domestic hockey for Surbiton, whilst being a part of the British setup. Originally from Glasgow, Jess Buchanan has recently moved back to the UK to be a part of the GB EDP, having spent the last few seasons playing in goal for Catalonian side Atlètic Terrassa Hockey Club. Next season she will be playing for Exeter University, whilst looking to progress in her international career, with Scotland and GB. In this interview we chat about playing styles, the differences and similarities between indoor and outdoor hockey for goalies, as well as how the aerial rule affects goalkeepers.

Originally from Tayside, he came through the youth ranks at Dundee Wanderers, before playing for local rivals Grove Menszieshill Hockey Club, as well as Kelburne H.C. After moving to England he played for Bowdon H.C. and is now in his second stint at East Grinstead H.C.

Patrick Krüsi (who speaks with an Australian accent) and Elias Brönniamann both play hockey for the Swiss National Team. Both players got themselves on the score sheet today, with Elias Brönniamann bagging four of them in a nine goal game against Gibraltar.
Eric Abudarham is one of the more experienced players in a very young Gibraltarian squad at the tournament. Here, in this interview, he gives us his thoughts on the match against Switzerland.

He is an accomplished club player who has done well within the domestic leagues in his native Alba. However, he has had a broader impact on the sport in his other roles within the game. He has been around the world as an administrator for the International Korfball Federation, helping with the running of elite level competitions. Now she lives in Antwerp and plays for Braxgata Hockey Club, in the Belgian top division. Katerina Laciná has won bronze medals at the 2015 Indoor World Cup and the 2020 Indoor European Championships. In 2015 the city of Prague hosted the EuroHockey Championships II Division. Here, she was a part of the squad that won the silver medal. Emily Dark is an up and coming star of Scottish and British Hockey. She’s currently playing for, Edinburgh based, Watsonian Hockey Club, in the Scottish Premier League and is a member of the Scottish senior side, as well as the Great British Elite Development Program. In 2019, Emily was a part of the Scottish side that won the EuroHockey Championships II Division, where she was also named the Young Player of the Tournament. Outside of hockey Emily is studying Physics at the University of St. Andrew’s, as well as serving as a reservist in the Royal Air Force. At the RAF she is the first ever woman, in her squadron, to have passed out as a Gunner.

Before moving to Central Europe for greater hockey playing opportunities, he played for a variety of clubs in the U.K. including Indian Gymkhana and Reading Hockey Club. In 2017, Tommy won the EuroHockey Championships II Division, taking the goalkeeper of the tournament award as well. He is also one of the brains behind the coaching company Iconic Goalkeeping. Tommy picks the men’s six-a-side indoor dream team.
Amy Gibson is an indoor and outdoor Bundesliga champion for Der Club an der Alster, in Germany. She is also the goalkeeper for the Scottish Ladies National Team and has been capped twice for the Great Britain Hockey Team. She played for a variety of clubs around the U.K., but after leaving the centralised programme, she went to play on the continent. In 2019 she won the EuroHockey Championship II Division, which meant that she played in the top competition this summer in 2021. Amy picks the women’s six-a-side indoor dream team.

Duncan Ruzzak is an umpire associated with national governing body, Scottish Hockey. Recently, he has been promoted to the top tier of officials for the European Hockey Federation's indoor club competitions. As somebody who has also umpired and participated in the full outdoor standard of the sport, he has an interesting perspective on the game. Duncan picks the men's six-a-side dream team.
Keely Dunn is a well known pundit and educator of umpires, based in the North American country of Canada. She runs the online brand of FHumpires, which brings together hockey officials from all over the world into a community of support and development. Additionally, Keely is a regular contributor to the magazine, Hockey World News. With all of her work in the media over the last few years, it is easy to forget that she was once an international standard umpire herself. Keely picks the women's six-a-side team, as well as a specific umpires dream team.

Simon Mason is a former goalkeeper for England and Great Britain, who has been to three Olympic Games; Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004. He was formerly President of England Hockey for a three year term, sat on the FIH Athletes committee and has been a board member of the European Hockey Federation for the past ten years. Now, Simon commentates on hockey for television (the FIH channel, the BBC and BT Sport) and is the owner and Managing Director of Mercian Hockey. He picks the men's six-a-side dream team.
Jade Bloomfield played at an English National League standard and has also coached at a domestic club level. As a journalist, he has a unique perspective on the sport and is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Hockey World News, which is the premier hockey magazine, as well as being the Chairman of the Hockey Writers Club. Jade picks the women's six-a-side team.

Korfball is a mixed gender sport that originates from the Netherlands, that is similar to both netball and basketball. It's an invasion game that is eight-a-side, with four women and four men on each team. Korfball has been around for over a 100 years, having started in 1902, and is now played all over the world. In this series Tao MacLeod finds out a bit more about the sport, from those involved.
Neala Brennan is a player for Trojans Korfball Club, which is based in London. She also become a full England international when she was just 14 years old. Neala has played at several major international tournaments, including the multi-sports festival, the World Games. Having taken up the sport whilst at primary school, she is now a sports teacher actively bringing korfball to a new generation.
Tilbert La Haye is from the Netherlands, which is the home of the sport of Korfball. He started playing the game when he was five years old, he has held various roles throughout his career, including that of coach for the Catalan Team. Now, Tilbert is the Chief Executive Officer of world governing body, the International Korfball Federation (IKF). His responsibilities include developing korfball and organising events.

Jack Pitt is originally from Bristol. He moved to Scotland in 2019 in order to study at the University of Edinburgh. It was here that Jack took up the sport of korfball by joining the student team, where he also helped out with refereeing and coaching. Then, in the spring of 2020, Jack joined the Scotland Korfball Association management committee as the Public Relations Officer.
Kashif (Kash) Irshad moved to Edinburgh when he was eight years old, having been born in Newcastle. He got into korfball whilst studying at the University of Edinburgh and has gone onto become a referee and a coach, before getting involved at Edinburgh City Korfball Club. Kash is now on the management committee of the Scotland Korfball Association as the Development Officer.

Dan Pratt is a player and a coach who's involved in the set-up at Edinburgh City Korfball Club. He is also on the committee for the Scottish Korfball Association (SKA). Having started his career in London, he captained Croydon Korfball Club. before moving to play in the Netherlands, after which he moved back to the U.K. As an international player, Dan has recently acted as a vice-captain for the Scottish National Team, before the Covid-19 pandemic brought a halt to sport.
Ella Fisher started playing korfball at the University of St. Andrew's. After being recruited to play for the student team, she fell in love with the communal aspect of the sport and the approachable nature of the players. Since then she has served on committees as a social secretary and a team captain. Like her club mate, Ella has spent some time playing in the Netherlands, but now plays for Edinburgh City Korfball Club.

Patricia Wright-Alexis (née Borneo) is a former captain of the Trinidad and Tobago national hockey team, turning out for the twin island country between 2007 and 2017. She's been a leader of her country on several tours, acting as the vice-captain during the Caribbean Cup, as well as skippering the side at the Pam Americans, the CAC Games and the World League. She has competed at two Commonwealth Games, captaining the West Indians in the 2014 Glasgow tournament. Since retirement she has moved into coaching, running IN Sports Academy. During this interview we discuss taking on different points of view, providing input into tactics and strategy, as well as prompting players to take on personal responsibility for the group.

Yasmin Parsons is a netballer and captain of the Surrey Storm for whom she plays wing attack and centre. She is also a full international for the England Roses national team. Formerly of Team Bath, she was a part of the squad that won the British Netball Superleague in 2013, a feat that she repeated with her current side in 2016. Internationally, she has won the 2012 Fast 5 World Series and the Euro Netball Championships with the England Roses, going on to skipper her country on occasion. Coti (Constanza) Barrandeguy is a 24 year old hockey player for the Woodlands School Hockey Club, in Montevideo, and the Uruguayan Ladies National Team. She has been playing the sport since she was six years old, after her parents got her into it. She is now an international standard player, who has represented her country at the FIH Open Series, Pan American Games and the Youth Olympics. Coti is one of the senior members of the Uruguayan side and is a part of the leadership group amongst the players. In this interview we talk about communicating with team mates, having shared experiences within a group and developing a team culture based around a human centred ethos.

Rawle Cox is a well known figure within the New York Islanders community, having played for the club after the amalgamation in 1997, as well as both the Islanders and New York Hockey Clubs prior to that. Rawle is an accomplished hockey player having competed in the Pan American Games, as well as the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics for the USA National Team. Originally hailing from the twin island nation of Trinidad and Tobago, he and his family moved to New York in 1960’s, after which he became an American citizen. In this interview he talks about his hockey experiences over the years.

John Boyce is originally from Barbados. Currently, he is one of the goalkeepers for the New York Islanders, but has played for the club in a variety positions for several decades now, at one point leading the goalscoring charts in the local league. Originally moving to New York in search of new opportunities and adventure, he got involved with the Islanders, due to an historical link between the club and the school that he went to back home. Michelle Julliard (née Howard) is from the St. George parish of Barbados and now finds herself living in Brooklyn, New York. She went on to represent the Barbados National Hockey Team at the 1997 Pan American Games, in Chile. After moving to New York in 1999 she joined the club a year later, going on to captain the ladies side of the club, and has been involved with the Islanders ever since. Alva Serrette is a well known figure within USA Field Hockey, having served on the board of the national governing body and as the High Performance Director of the Men’s National Team. Previously he has held administrative roles within the North East Field Hockey Association (NEFHA), which is the organisation that runs the domestic league on the American East Coast. Additionally, he was on the organising committee for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, as the Hockey Competition Manager. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Alva moved to the USA in his early 20’s and became an American citizen. He went on to become a full international for his adoptive country and is also one of the founding members of the original Islanders Hockey Club (prior to the amalgamation with New York H.C.), having been the first ever President of the club in the early days.

As a young man he studied at college in New York for several years. Whilst here he became heavily involved with the New York Islanders, going onto become the skipper of the club. Ayanna McClean is the leading FIH umpire to have come out of the Caribbean. She has umpired at the Commonwealth Games, the Hockey World Cup and is on the panel for the Tokyo Olympics, which has been postponed until 2021. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Ayanna briefly played for her national team before becoming a world class match official. In her younger years, she spent some time studying at university in New York. Although she wasn’t a permanent member of the squad, whilst in the city she socialised with many members of the Islanders hockey team, providing her a unique perspective on what the club has been up to over the years.

Euclid Juni Mahon is a legend of the hockey club. As an original founder of the team, in the 1970’s, he has played a major part in the development of hockey in and around the New York area. Euclid’s basement has basically served as the clubhouse for post match activities for the Islanders, as well as committee meetings and other such social events. Joan Smit is a well known personality in the world of African netball. In the early 90’s she was the first woman of colour to play for the Namibian national team and went on to captain the squad at the 1991 World Cup. She also spent time as the coach of the Under-21 side. Now Joan is working for the International Netball Federation as the Regional Development Manager for Africa, helping to provide opportunities for children and young people to participate in the game. After starting out as a teenage coach in his native Britain, he moved over to work in North and Central America in search for new opportunities and interesting experiences. Matt Noble has worked as both a football and a cricket coach. Neil Shaw is a well known figure within the hockey community on the East Coast of Scotland. Formerly of Waverly Inveresk Trinity (WIT) Hockey Club, he went on to represent his local team in the National 1st Division, as well as having chaired the club’s committee as President. More recently, he has been called up to the Scottish Masters (Over 45’s) team that won the 2019 European Championships in Rotterdam. Neil has also been actively involved in junior and development team coaching, within the sport of hockey, for a number of years now.

Poorya Mortazavi is a football coach with an interesting background. He born and raised in Denmark to Iranian parents, spent a period of his later schooling in the English capital city, of London, before moving across to the Americas. He spent time working in Mexico, before moving to the United States of America, where he now is progressing with his coaching career. In addition to his vocational experience, Poorya also has a couple of Master’s Degrees, firstly in Sports Coaching from Loughborough University and more recently in Sports Administration from Georgia State University.

Ryan Godsmark is a Scottish born rugby player, who now lives in Belgium, playing for the national team after competing in the league structure over there for several years. He is also a rugby coach and sports teacher and is in fact the Head of Rugby at the British School of Brussels. Ryan also has a sports science degree from Edinburgh Napier University.
