Part of why friendship in adulthood can feel so tricky is because we don’t have any shared language to discuss what might be happening in (and to) our relationships as we navigate different seasons of life. In this episode, I’m joined by Alex Alexander, who is sharing with us a framework she has designed to give us exactly what we’ve been missing in our adult friendships: a clear way to think about and experience them so we can stop overthinking and assigning untrue stories, and start enjoying more of the authentic, life-giving connections we crave.

It’s me. I’m the skeptic. After trying vision boards in the past, I had pretty much written them off as not for me. But recently, I’d seen some goal setting research that led me to think I should give them one more shot. But before I did, I wanted to talk to vision imagery expert, Maria Maldanado Smith about how I might approach it differently this time. The holidays are a lot of things. They’re fun, stressful, full-of-wonder, intense, and everything in-between. But a few years ago, I found myself feeling more of the stressful and anxiety-inducing parts than the full-of-wonder parts and knew that something had to change. Since then, I’ve experimented with some simple reflection and planning activities to better prepare me for the season. In this episode, I’m sharing the 6 simple prompts I use to help me plot out my ideal holiday season so I can feel more present, and less stressed - and I’m hopeful it will help you too.

A few years ago, I was visiting my best friend from college and she took me to Grace Place – a mom’s group she had recently started. But it wasn’t your typical mom’s group – it met on the weekends, it included moms of all ages, and it was truly one of the most welcoming and authentic environments I had experienced. In this episode, Christa joins me to share how she got started (despite not considering herself a natural leader), what she has learned matters most after 5 years of gatherings, and thoughts on ways you might consider starting or getting plugged into your own mom’s group.

Success can be such a loaded word. We tie so much to it. Yet, what’s often perceived as a success by our culture, may or may not actually be aligned with our own desires and values. The other day I found myself having all of the “should” thoughts… “I should call my parents, actually read the stack of books on my night stand, clean the dishwasher filter, etc.” Sometimes “shoulds” can be helpful nudges, and other times, they can load us up with unnecessary guilt. Recently I’ve been asking myself a question when I think I “should” do something that is helping me gain greater clarity on my next step, and release guilt if in fact I don’t have the capacity to do the thing my brain thinks I should do. My hope is this question might prove helpful for you too!

We are well into January and perhaps (like me) you’ve been attempting to lean into one or more habits in these first few weeks of the new year.

Here we go again. After moving 4 months ago, I’m finally in a headspace where I can think about building our new village. I just got back from a last-minute trip to see one of my dearest friends! But in saying yes to that trip, I knew I’d be saying no to being able to do the podcast I had planned. So I wanted to re-play the episode I had in my head when I made the decision to say YES to this trip, knowing it’d mean I’d need to give myself permission to take a break from my original plans. So I thought in lieu of my planned episode, I’d play that episode. Because in my experience, us moms need to give ourselves more permission to take breaks! But knowing when to take a break and for how long, isn’t always the easiest thing to figure out. In this episode, I’m sharing 3 questions to help you determine when you might need a break from something in your life, and my best tip for how to give yourself permission to actually take it, guilt-free!

We literally only have so much time for close relationships. Because when we can understand why it feels so hard to maintain all the communication with all the people - we can give ourselves some permission to release the guilt and pressure when we can’t keep up - because we weren’t meant to!

I’ve always hated the expression “early is on time, on time is late.” Why can’t I just be on-time-ish? We often talk about how hard friendship feels in the midst of busy mom life. But the reality is that a lot of things have actually gotten easier in my friendships since becoming a mom. So in this week’s episode, we’re going to talk about what is actually better about friendship in motherhood - like the ways kids can help us make more friends (and ease the awkward at the same time!), and how a lack of time may be the key to the most fulfilling and authentic friendships we’ve ever experienced.

The mind games are REAL when it comes to making friends as a busy mom. And the fear of being annoying (or a burden) comes up a lot! In this episode, we’re going to talk about what we’re actually afraid of when we worry we’ll be perceived as annoying, the number of outreaches it really takes to feel-out a new connection without being “too much”, and when to listen to your gut and when to question it in determining next steps with a potential friend.

Making friends in motherhood is hard enough, but making friends as a couple takes things to a whole new level! It isn’t just ONE relationship that has to have a spark - there are multiple! And different personalities have different preferences for how often they have the energy (or desire) to pursue friendship - making the whole thing just a bit tricky. So in this episode, I’m joined by my husband, Mike to talk about our experience making friends as a couple over 13+ years and 2 cross-country moves -- and all we’ve learned along the way!

One of the scariest things about making friends is you put yourself out then not be accepted. Either the person you want to be friends with is too busy, or feels like she has too many friends already, or just isn’t interested in a friendship with you. The fear of rejection is certainly real, but how common is it, really? In this episode I share my own story of being “rejected” and what helped me move forward and continue to put myself out there, and how you can too.

There’s no denying it. Nearly every step of the friend-making process has elements of awkwardness. It’s awkward to talk to new people. It’s awkward to walk into a room where you feel like everyone else knows someone but you. It’s awkward to ask for contact info after just meeting someone. It’s awkward to extend an invite to someone you hardly know to get together. But the truth is: If we value friendship, we value avoiding awkwardness more. It’s better to embrace it and push through. And, in this episode, I’ll share 5 practices for how you can do just that.
