On Christmas Day in 1863 Henry Wadsworth Longfellow continued to grieve the death of his beloved second wife Fannie who had died two years prior when her housedress caught fire.
Longfellow himself tried to extinguish those flames with his own body but Fannie did not survive the accident. During the subsequent two years Henry's oldest son would enlist in the Union army to fight in the Civil War.
On December 1 of that year, Henry would receive a telegram that his son had been shot during a battle of the Mine Run campaign. The location of the exit wound from the bullet would put his son at risk of being paralyzed.
This father of six, now widowed, worried for the future of his children, all while cannons thundered in the south, captured his feelings as he heard the bells that Christmas day in his poem titled, 'Christmas Bells'.
Yesterday as we sang this poem (now song) in our church congregation, I felt as though I could relate a little more to Longfellow and his feelings of despair that were overcome with hope by what he chose to listen to. He chose amidst the grief, amidst the cannons, amidst the fighting and hate to listen to the bells of hope. Those bells would breathe peace into his life just as they have into mine.
I include below the words to the entire poem with verses that are not included in the song. They paint the beautiful picture of a man who found his hope as he bowed his head and listened more intently to his maker. "Then pealed the bells more loud and deep, God is not dead, nor doth He sleep!"
I know that bowing our heads is the first step toward hope and peace in our lives. - Don Mast
I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
Till ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men! STOP
Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said;
"For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men."

We explore the howling history of dogmen from as far back as ancient Greece to today. They called the creatures, Cynocephali. This alleged race was also described in the writings of Marco Polo, who claimed to have come across an entire island of anthropomorphic canines, before supposedly initiating trade deals with them. The cynocephali were prominently featured in works of art ranging from medieval pieces to depictions of St. Christopher in the Eastern Orthodox Church.

A folk story from the Appalachia region of the United States. Joseph and George Cox are known through the Allegheny Mountains as The Lost Children of the Alleghenies. George and Joseph Cox, then aged seven and five respectively, disappeared from their home in Pavia on April 24, 1856. Their dead bodies were found several days later in the surrounding woods and they were buried in the Mount Union United Methodist Church cemetery in nearby Lovely. There is a small memorial to them in the Spruce Hollow forest in Blue Knob State Park, Pennsylvania.

Kilmer
I think no eye has ever seen,
A poem like this quarantine.
E.B. Browning
How do I glove thee? Let me count the ways.
Poe
It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom not-so-clean,
That a virus there lived that you may know
By the name of COVID-19.
Dickinson
Because I could not stop for death
He kindly stopped for me –
I told him that I had acquired
My herd immunity.
Angelou
The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of life postponed,
but not the bill.
Shakespeare
Fair is foul, and foul is fair:
My 401k is barely there.
Longfellow
Listen my children and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere.
Or maybe it’s better to tell you the caper
Of how I discovered some toilet paper
At a Safeway only three miles from here.
Eliot
Let us go then, you and I,
When the evening is spread out— DON’T TOUCH YOUR EYE!
Marlowe
Come live with me and be my love,
And we will all the pleasures prove
That yield the valleys, groves, and hills,
So long as you can pay my bills.
Coleridge
Water, water, everywhere,
But all the time we think:
Who wants this water anyway
With so much wine to drink?
Burns
Oh, my love is like a red, red rose
That’s newly sprung in June.
But my love says that she’ll murder me
If this ain’t done real soon.
Haiku
by Joe Tessitore
I went to a show
and I sat next to strangers
a lifetime ago.
Quarantine Nursery Rhymes
by Connie Phillips
Oh happy day—it’s finally spring!
The flowers bloom, the birdies sing…
We’re stuck at home, so thank Beijing,
And practice social distancing!
—
Netflix or YouTube, where to look?
Your kids are home, you need a hook.
They’ve heard it all, that gobbledygook…
Do something novel—read a book!
—
This virus from the CCP,
Upending all society,
Made toilet tissue ironically
Our most valuable commodity.
—
I ventured out to take a break,
And thought that I should shop for steak…
Instead, I went down to the lake
With coffee and some carrot cake!

The Podcast About Everything BONUS:
Stella Elizabeth Williamson’s obituary appeared in the Altoona Mirror newspaper on Aug. 28, 1980. It was standard, listing only the names of her parents — Alfred and Dessie Williamson — and that she was a member of Gallitzin United Methodist Church’s Women’s Society. It was little to be remembered by. But it was Williamson’s secrets that would drive discussion and media coverage in the coming months and years. They were secrets her neighbors and acquaintances would find hard to believe. They were the stuff of horror movies, and they inspired Williamson’s posthumous nickname — the Gallitzin Spinster. - Story credit: Sean Sauro, August 9, 2018
