Confidently navigate your way from pregnancy to postpartum with all the information you need to make the decisions that are right for you!
On this episode I had my friend Audrey on the show. She is a pastor’s wife, mom to her children and foster babies, runner, birth keeper, authentic midwife…. You know all the things!
You can expect this episode to go deep and talk about some real and raw things that can make or break your birth. She shares her story about being dropped from care because of a breech baby and how she had the mental fortitude to birth her baby the way she wanted to.
We go into important things to think about when inviting your children into your birth space, honoring God as our first go to with decisions, complete ownership over your birth, how your man can and should protect you during labor and so much more!

TRIGGER WARNING!! This is a story of a traditional midwife put on trial for a loss of a sweet baby in NE. If you are currently pregnant there may be something in here that are triggering for you.
Angee Hock, the Nebraska Birth Keeper, has been invested in the birth world for 19 years, and has served in traditional midwifery and holistic wellness since 2017. Since then, she has faced repeated counts of government over-reach, including a 3 1/2 yr. legal battle, all in The State of Nebraska. Angee has a passion for human and parental rights and autonomy, and serves as a supporter and advocate for families who choose to own their path and stand on their rights in healthcare and birth.
We talk about the loss of sweet baby Vera as well as Angee's story of being charged, jailed and put on trial over a 3 1/2 yr long journey. She fights hard for women who want the option to birth at home with assistance and her story is going to be used to further that mission. She graciously came on to share and it's a story that will hopefully ignite passion in each listener to fight for what is right despite the risks.

Heather Whitley is a busy home birth midwife in Salt Lake City, UT. She has been practicing for 12 years while raising her family. She educated her children at home for 15 years and was an adjunct instructor at two midwifery colleges. Most of them are off to or out of college. She channeled her spare time, vast clinical experience and love of teaching into creating the Midwife Companion online course. Designed for pregnant women in OB care, who seek more dialog on pregnancy testing and options than they are getting in ten minute face times with their OBs, from the combined clinical and holistic viewpoint of a successful midwife. The intent of this course is to get women thinking freely and independently about their pregnancy and birth.

Today Amanda shares her birth story and is open and honest about her struggle and healing journey of birth trauma. I’m so happy I got to speak with her about this topic because her trauma had come in the third stage of pregnancy.
This is a story of not being listened to and the consequences and trauma that happen when the medical system fails. This is an emotional episode so if you’re pregnant right now you may want to skip this episode!
Amanda shares one of the most helpful tools she has used to overcome PTSD!
This is a powerful episode and you won’t want to miss!
Amanda Janzen, momma of two, is a “retired” OB nurse and now the owner of The Midwest Momma Collective where she practices as an (IBCLC) lactation consultant and birth/postpartum doula. She had a traumatic hospital birth with her first baby and has since had a healing “home away from home” birth with her second during the Covid-19 pandemic. With nearly identical labors/births and postpartum complications, she knows the importance of trauma informed care and the lasting impact trauma has in the postpartum period.

Last week was huge when it comes to Homebirth in Nebraska! Angela Hock, a Direct Entry or "self proclaimed" midwife stood her ground against the medical mafia in Nebraska and won! She was found "Not Guilty" on charges by the State of child abuse and neglect that lead to death.
While we can mourn the tragedy of a baby dying we can also rejoice in justice and in hope that one day laws will be changed to enable women to birth on their own terms with whom they want present at the most spiritual and transformational event of her life.
Thank you to #courttv for airing this trial so we can all see the truth and evidence.
I am not a lawyer and cannot pretend to know the ins and outs of this case so this is solely for entertainment purposes and to get an insight on some of my thoughts as a Homebirth mom x3!

She also discusses how she turned from conventional dentist into a wholistic one! It was so fun to listen to her journey.

One of the biggest ways I try to promote this mindset shift around birth is normalizing it! Women have been having babies since the dawn of time. We need to get back to the basics so hearing stories from women who have been down that path before us is powerful. Today I have a great guest on the show sharing her story of an empowered and confident birth center birth. We talked through her decision making, processing her first birth, postpartum depression and how she decided that she was going to have it different this time!

Dr. Stu came on the show to talk about my most favorite and most controversial topics, the medical system. We discussed what it looked like for both of us to start questioning the medical system as medical providers and he answers some important questions on How we got to a place where women started transitioning from the home to the hospital and if it has been beneficial for women or not. Surrender- Miriam Webster dictionary defines surrender as :to yield to the power, control, or possession of another upon compulsion or demand. I could not find a more accurate word to describe this past 9 months with you. It did start with my daughter’s birth. You can go back to episode 47 to hear more about that. I want you to hang in there with me because I don’t believe this word is just for me. I believe that many women, especially those who like to think they are in more control then they really are, will benefit from today’s episode. Now I will say that learning this word has been not fun, nor easy. I would not describe the experiences that lead me to yield to Jesus as pleasant or a walk in the park. What I will say is when you let go of what ever you think you’re in control of and allow the Lord to lead you… well friend… it will be an adventure.
I asked over on my private Facebook groups and the vote was a resounding one on one from a close friend or from like minded women who are going through the same thing and that’s what this Patreon will be. The deeper you go the more you will find how everything about our femininity is so connected. Birth is such a beautiful thing but it’s not just a physical event. It is also emotional and spiritual. I believe that our Creator God designed birth so well! Carrying a child and birthing that child is a wonderful event in a woman’s life.
Today on the show I interviewed Bethany Beal from Girl Defined Ministries. Bethany is head-over-heels in love with her best friend and husband, David, and is the super proud mommy of Davey Jr. She is the cofounder of Girl Defined Ministries, author of several books including Shine Bright: 60 Days to Becoming a Girl Defined by God, and is passionate about spreading the truth of biblical womanhood. To her family and close friends, she is simply a tall blonde Texan who is obsessed with iced lattes and can’t get enough of her sweet little family. I was so excited to have her on the show to take a deeper dive into what Biblical womanhood looks like and how feminism has creeped into homes with out us even really knowing. She shares her Homebirth story and we just had a great time!

Today I am sharing something I’ve been ruminating on for a while. Truth vs lies. How to we navigate it in not just birth but our ever day lives. The only way we can start talk about lies is if we believe that there is absolute truth. With out truth there would be no lies. We could all go on in our blissfully ignorant ways and what outcome will that get us? Well I can tell you from a birth perspective it doesn’t get you far. Very rarely does being blissfully ignorant get you the holy transformative experience you’re looking for. Before we get into the episode
I want to remind you that one of the most important things you can do while preparing for your birth is have a supportive system around you. No matter where you’re planning on having your baby knowing your options, addressing fears and inviting Holy Spirit into your decision making is so important at. If you’re looking for someone to walk along side you in that process and journey I’m your gal! I’d love to have a free 15 min consult with you to find out your next steps in this journey!

Erin was so gracious to come on the show and process her birth with me. Her baby is turning one year old this week! This is a sensitive birth story that was thrown off even more due to Covid. One year ago the hospitals where constantly changing in what, where, when and how they wanted women to birth in that system. Mom’s who had originally planned to have a hospital birth where quickly changing to Homebirth’s admits the chaos. Some moms chose to stay and hope that covid restrictions wouldn’t throw off their birth.
Erin experienced a traumatic birth and she shares openly with us what that was like for her and some redeeming aspects that came from this experience. Coming from someone who has also experienced a traumatic birth we need to get better at listening to those who have had trauma. Erin shares the importance of the community she had and how she was also able to contribute to the community through breast donor milk.

Many lessons were learned during my second homebirth after cesarean (HBAC). Elyse Marie taught me things I never would have learned without this experience.
Listen along as I share her story to the public for the first time since her birth! I process through the lessons learned and I hope you find encouragement!
There is nothing special about me to be able to have a blissful birth, I'm just a woman who respects the birth process and trusts my intuitive abilities to birth a baby.

Birth Trauma is unfortunately not uncommon. One reason I started this podcast was to expose some reasons birth trauma has become normal and even celebrated. Having experienced birth trauma myself, it's something that comes up during every pregnancy. I've gotten proficient in working through it and not letting it control my thoughts, emotions or decisions.
I want to share some things about birth trauma specifically with you that I hope you find helpful. Whether you have experienced birth trauma in the past or are wanting to avoid trauma for future births this episode is for you! I will give you a disclaimer that if you are close to having a baby this may not be the best time to listen if you are easily triggered.

This is an episode I’ve been hesitant to do but I have felt like it was needed for a long time. I want to be very sensitive to women no matter what their choices and in no way want to diminish the birth experiences of those clients I have attended in the hospital. They are all beautiful in their own way. That’s the thing about birth, we can truly pick out the beauty in any situation we are in. My goal is to create and foster an environment that is dripping with beauty in all areas.

There are many approaches to fertility. If you’ve been struggling to get pregnant or you’re just starting on your journey to pregnancy you’re not going to want to miss this episode. This conversation I had with Sarah Clark takes a functional look at the body and addresses underlying issues. Sarah went through her own journey with fertility. When she was 28 years old, she received a diagnosis of premature ovarian failure. She accepted the diagnosis and had both her children through in vitro fertilization. Years later she realized the root cause of her infertility was a food intolerance.
She is a certified life coach with accreditation from the International Coaches Federation and a health coach with training from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.
She is the author of Fabulously Fertile - Supercharge your Fertility Naturally, Fabulously Fertile Cookbook and Fertility Preparation Program. Her fertility coaching program, which includes functional lab testing, supports couples to make diet and lifestyle changes that dramatically improve the chances of a healthy pregnancy and baby!

Siblings at birth is a normal event in many cultures and yet in the United States it's still not something considered by many. Some cannot wrap their heads around the fact that someone would choose to have their children present.
The goal of this episode is to help you decide if this is the right idea for you and your family. I’ll give you some practical questions to ask yourself if you are thinking you may like you child with you. In the US birth is considered a medical event that needs managed. 99% of women deliver in hospitals to prevent fetal or maternal death and yet we rank 10th out of the 10 most similarly wealthy countries.
Birth is not a medical event. Sometimes medical events happen during pregnancy or birth that need attention from a medical professional. But most of the time our bodies know exactly what to do as we were designed to experience this physiological event. There are many physiological events that aren’t managed or watched over by a professional, monitors or interventions.
How do we switch our beliefs from fearful management of a medical event to this is a normal physiological event that I can trust until it proves me wrong and then I will seek help. Tune in to today's episode to find out!

**No part of this episode should be taken as medical advice. Please speak to a medical provider if you have concerns about your mental health.
"No." This is word is one to get really good at saying during pregnancy. It's a complete sentence and should be respected with out having to explain why you're saying it. This is just apart of you having control over your birth choices. You have the inherent right to say "yes" or "no" to something.
No matter what setting you're choosing to birth in this word should be read to be confidently used. 'No’ means you have boundaries.
Today's episode will hopefully give you the confidence you need to know why you are saying "no" and encourage you to use it when needed.

You deserve choices. This is NOT just for women who want to birth at home this is for ALL women who believe that limiting options for women is NOT an option!
1% of the population choose to have a homebirth. There is no consistent law or ideas on how midwives should operate on a federal level. Each State has it's own idea and law either for or against who can attend. Today, I'm focusing on my home State of Nebraska. We have been in a fight, especially during this Corona season, for midwives to openly attend the many women looking to have a homebirth and avoid the hospital.
Listen in for some thoughts about homebirth and the direction I hope Nebraska will take.
Thank you Nebraska Birth Choice Advocates and the many other organizations and freedom fighters out there for all you have done and continue to do!

Labor is way more of a head game than we believe it to be. When a woman is allowed to sink in deep into labor land and find her groove, she is much more likely to get the birth she wants. When labor is disrupted by temperature checks, cervical checks, questions, etc it pulls her out of labor land and back into her brain.
When cervical checks are done because of a clinical sign, it can indicate a need that is beneficial. When they are done out of curiosity, there is usually more harm than good done.
Protecting your mind from disappointment is key in having a natural/physiological/undisturbed birth. You have 3 options when it comes to cervical checks. In this episode we will dive into how to figure out what one is best for you! "I'm sorry, you're not allowed to have a VBAC at this hospital. You'll have to go somewhere else or we can schedule your repeat."
This is a sentence that MANY women are still hearing here in the United States. VBAC bans are unethical and a major problem when it comes to a women's freedom to choose where and how she births.
I'm so excited to share with you the interview I had with my friend Kinsey Marie Phifer. She banned together some powerful women to influence her local hospital to get rid of their VBAC ban and allow more women choices!
Kinsey shares with us some practical tips that we can do to change a VBAC ban in our communities!

Part of my mission here at The Empowered Birth Podcast is to help you normalize the birth process. Unfortunately we are briefly taught what to expect in health class watching a baby be born and maybe during our hospital birth course. That’s not really enough. Normalizing this process reduces fear. Reducing fear can help in increasing outcomes. Well today I want to take you through an inside look to physiological birth and why it matters! Specifically we are going to dive into our hormones. When we know what is causing our body to do the things that it does the unknown becomes a little bit more familiar.
