In this episode I am talking to Rob Moore.

Rob is one of the UK’s top non-fiction authors including the #1 best seller: Money, know more, make more, give more

He became a millionaire at 30 having been an artist, £50k in debt 5 years before

He is co-founder of Progressive Property, the UK’s leading property training company and is host of the Disruptive Entrepreneur Podcast and The Money Podcast.

We talk about how your relationship with money is impacted on the emotion you attach to it and the limiting beliefs you have around it. Rob talks about how he changed his relationship with money to become a millionaire property investor and the common traits that all millionaires have which includes having a strong cause, mission and sense of purpose. This is something I’ve talked about many times through this series and will definitely help you to get through this crisis.

We also talk about the culture of the industry with low profit margins and a “race to the bottom” on cost. Rob talks about the need for a “race to the top” which is something I’ve talked a lot about over the last 12 months.

If you’ve been inspired to reflect on your own vision, purpose, values and beliefs, I am launching my first online programme, ‘Rich Thinking for Uncertain Times” to do just that. It’s a four week programme which will include a weekly group coaching session. You can find it more about this in the link below.

Richard Threlfall is the Global Head of Infrastructure at KPMG advising on policy, governance and finance. Richard is also a World Economic Forum Council member on the Global Future Council for Infrastructure.

The World Economic Forum gathers in Davos in Switzerland every year. When I originally reached out to Richard to record this podcast I wanted to find out about DAVOS, what had been discussed and how that is being filtered into businesses representing the built environment.

Then the world changed with the Coronavirus global pandemic

In this episode we use a phrase that has been used before, “never waste a good crisis”

We talk about how we are embracing digital technology more effectively and efficiently and how important our work is and how the public does not fully understand the importance of the work we do to build their Built Environment.

We also talk about sustainability which is what everyone was talking about at Davos and how climate change is a crisis that will not go away.

Derek Mills, Author of the 10 Second Philosophy started his career in financial services. After a number of years he was depressed, working 6-7 days a week and not seeing his family. One evening in 2003, working late he had an epiphany that changed his life forever.

The epiphany was ‘Daily Standards’

By 2006 Derek had completely changed the way he worked, the way he showed up on a daily basis and the result of that made him his first million.

Derek’s philosophy is so simple, it’s moving away from the concept of setting goals to setting daily standards for ourselves.

If the standards you live by on a daily basis are not congruent with your goals, then you won’t achieve them.

This is something that could transform our lives in the future but also help us in the world we are living right now to get through the next few months.

In this episode we talk to Matthew Barnes-Smith, a ‘Construction Leaver’.

Matthew graduated university in 2009 with a Construction Project Management Degree and on paper was the ideal candidate for our industry.

He joined for the problem solving, challenges, creativity, innovation, working in teams, amazing travel opportunities that come within the industry

What he didn’t sign up for was the macho and oppressive environment he found himself in.

After a few years, he burnt out physically and mentally and needed to get out, so he left.

Matthew shares his story on what led him to leave, how coaching helped him to confront his feelings and how that led him to coaching and mentoring young men around gender stereotyping and the masks of masculinity.

We talk about how fear is driving a lot of the negative behaviours we are seeing in our industry and how that is linking to the challenges we have around mental health and the high rates of suicide.

The key takeaway was that it’s not about health and safety, it’s the safety to be yourself, safety that your mental health is safe, that you feel secure and your needs are being met.

“It’s not that guys don’t want to talk, it’s just that they don’t necessarily know how to”.

Ollie Aplin never thought he’d be a guy to keep a journal let alone build a brand to help other men.

Having experienced the trauma of his mum committing suicide, he buried it.

2 years later he had a mental breakdown which led him into therapy. Ollie struggled to talk about the feelings he’d locked deep within himself so his therapist recommended journaling as a way of getting his thoughts and feelings out so he could start to deal with them.

As a designer and a creative person Ollie became aware of other men’s challenges to start to journal and had a light bulb moment to develop his own product to help with this.

He looked at what worked for him and what would help him continue to Journal and following a successful crowdfunding appeal, he launched the Mind Journal.

The journal guides you through asking questions and focusses on the emotional response to the questions you are being asked.

According to Ollie, Construction is one of the most important industries that needs the most support and no one has ever reached out from the industry to find out more about the Mind Journal…….. until now.

If you’re inspired by this podcast and would like to be one of the first from the industry to get a copy of the journal and share your experiences, visit http://bit.ly/TCRxMindJournal

You can also sign up to receive the Mindful Monday newsletter that Ollie talks about on the podcast.

In this episode we talk to Jamie Murray, MD of The Best Little Building Company.

Jamie is a great example of how a little company can make a big impact, he’s a real pioneer in his attitude. This company has a clear sense of purpose with the client at the core of that and they are building a business based on 4 core values which positively impacts on behaviours, quality and the environment.

It can be really tough being a small builder but BLBC really value themselves and don’t win work by being the cheapest, they are really getting their value across to their clients and leading their own revolution against stereotypes.

Watch out for references to Spinal Tap (one of my favourite films) and some dialogue from Tarka the Site Dog!
