Ep 113: Today's episode is with Dr. Crystal Heath, a veterinarian in the Bay Area who also happens to be vegan. In a profession that is supposedly all about ANIMALS, you would think this wouldn't be that uncommon but unfortunately and oddly enough it is.

Dr. Heath is an outspoken animal rights advocate, on the founding committee of Veterinarians Against Ventilation Shutdown, which urges the American Veterinary Medical Association to re-classify ventilation shutdown as a “not recommended” method of depopulation. She’s also part of ourhonor.org, who’s goal is "to create an organized network of professionals who are able to formally challenge unethical institutionalized systems and amplify the voices of those who have been marginalized".

She's been a target of the agricultural industry, which was revealed by a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) showing the industry’s coordinated efforts to discredit her and portray her as a “dangerous animal rights activist” for speaking out against factory farming. Dr. Heath garnered worldwide attention after an Intercept article laid out the details of the story.

It's estimated that 13% of the US population have diabetes. That percentage is projected to increase to 33% by 2050 if current trends stay the same. Most of those diagnosed with this disease have type 2 diabetes, between 90-95% of cases. But it doesn't have to be this way! When we go down a holistic healing path we're often confronted with some serious revelations. Much of what we learn conflicts with everything we thought we knew.

On this episode we explore the 10 lessons we learn when trying to heal ourselves or our families. It was inspired by an article I read in Pathways, a magazine that is all about empowering families to step into their own path to wellness, "regenerating and transforming ourselves, our families, our communities and our world." The author of the article highlights the lessons she learned through the process of trying to heal her kids. These are important things I learned as well that helped open my eyes to the current healthcare paradigm.

On this episode we chat with Integrative Wellness Coach, Carly Reeder, all about her path to true health and wellness.

Like many of us, Carly has had her own healing journey. It all began in college, drinking too much alcohol, smoking cigarettes, eating fast food late night, and living an overall unhealthy life as a means to cope with stress (which is sadly all too common on American college campuses). Soon she was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and developed tremors, prompting doctors to prescribe her with anti-anxiety and anti-depression pharmaceuticals. But the pills didn't get to the root cause and her health continued to fail.

Everything shifted after Carly started practicing yoga, opening up a whole new world and changing her life forever! It was then that the long journey to healing began. For the next decade she would study yoga, pilates, massage therapy, and Ayurvedic nutrition, along with discovering the best ways to deal with stress and truly nourish the person as a whole - mind, body, and spirit.

Today’s guest is no stranger to health issues, as she’s experienced them as a teenager and as an adult.

After having her 4th child, Kristen Bowen started experiencing urinary incontinence. She did what many women are told to do and had surgery. Immediately after (and even during the procedure itself) Kristen’s most traumatic health journey began. She started experiencing seizures, was unable to walk, confined to a wheelchair, her hair was falling out, and she got down to 74 pounds. As she searched for answers her family was running through their savings, going from doctor to doctor, even visiting the Mayo Clinic and Stanford, but no one was able to help her. It wasn’t until getting to their wit's end, both financially and emotionally, that they finally received some answers from a PA willing to dig deep. And while her major symptoms improved, there was still work to be done!

Kristen's story took a powerful turn after a friend suggested soaking in magnesium. Not only did the magnesium help her truly recover, but it sparked a new passion and mission! She created her own company, Living the Good Life Naturally, sourcing the very best magnesium possible to help people everywhere obtain this essential mineral in the most effective and efficient way, through the skin!

Topics Include:

  • building a strong foundation
  • taking responsibility for our health and how to get started
  • what happens when we’re magnesium deficient
  • what strips magnesium
  • magnesium today versus our grandparents time
  • oral magnesium versus transdermal magnesium
  • long term consequence of oral magnesium supplements

Animal rights activist and long time restauranteur John Adamson has owned many restaurants through the years, but his newest venture, Neon Tiger, is quite special, it's fully vegan! This is the first vegan dinner and cocktail spot in Charleston, SC.

John's road to veganism looks similar to many of ours, finding bread crumbs here and there of videos and photos revealing the true nature of the animal agriculture industry, and being appalled at what he saw. After following Goats of Anarchy (goat rescue) on IG and recognizing the complex emotions these animals experienced John couldn't look back! He's now fighting for the animals by doing what he does best, creating a unique dining experience, this time with no animals being harmed.

John and I chat about many topics which include:

  • What sparked John's path to veganism
  • Big Pharma
  • Acidic versus Alkaline Diet
  • Natural Healing
  • Herbal Remedies
  • Environmental benefits of veganism
  • Ins and Outs of opening a vegan restaurant

Chances are when someone brings up the word diabetes you can name a loved one effected by this life altering disease. That’s because we have an epidemic on our hands in America. Over 30 million people have diabetes, with 1 in 4 not even knowing they have it all! 1/3 of all adults in US have prediabetes and in just 20 short years the number of adults diagnosed has doubled. But there are different types of diabetes. Those stats are for type 2 diabetes, the lifestyle related issue. What about the other form, type 1?  Those numbers are also rising with a 3.4% increase in cases each year. The current medical paradigm is that carbs are bad for diabetes and should be avoided. But what if that thought process is wrong?!    Charlotte Faith has been living with type 1 diabetes since she was 14 years old. She followed the current medical protocol for years, low-carb and high-fat diet. However, after discovering a video created by the team of Mastering Diabetes her thought process shifted. She couldn’t believe what she saw, experts advocating the complete opposite of what she’d be told her whole life! She decided to give a try, why not!? Within just a few short weeks, her insulin dependency lessened and her blood sugar became more stable. Within in a couple of months the hormone problems she’d been experiencing also got better.    We chat about her story, when she learned she had diabetes, different things she tried, and her experience going whole food plant-based to improve her type 1 diabetes. We also discuss her hormonal issues that caused her hair to fall out, weight fluctuation, and loss of her period for 7 years. Ep 32: Medicinal mushrooms are so amazing, but what are they exactly? And why are they so revered? On this episode we learn all about them from a mushroom expert who's been in the business for almost 50 years.

Jeff Chilton’s been a key figure in creating the booming medicinal mushroom market. He’s also the owner of Nammex, the first ever to offer a line of certified organic mushroom extracts in the U.S. that are now used by many supplement companies. His journey began right after college while working on a mushroom farm where he worked for 10 years. There he met a Japanese scientist who taught him all about medicinal mushrooms, which had been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for thousands of years. He then went on to attend conferences and expos all over the world educating people on the benefits of mushrooms, eventually forming his own organic extract company in 1989, selling the highest quality ingredients to nutraceutical and supplement companies around the world.

Jeff's been instrumental in educating the world about mushrooms and is basically the reason medicinal mushrooms are where they are today!

We learn about all the different types of medicinal mushrooms, their benefits, how mushrooms grow, what they are exactly, and how they're structured. We also chat about his upbringing, how he got to where he is today, as well as labeling laws and why reading labels and quality matter so much!

Why don’t diets work long term? Can a lifestyle change be what we ultimately need to keep us at that desired weight? On this episode of the podcast I chat with Helen Hall, the founder and creator of Hushup and Hustle, a lifestyle and wellness brand, and Blender Bombs, a product that has taken the smoothie world by storm in just 2 short years. After gaining an unwelcome 30 pounds, Helen was desperate to lose the weight. She tried many different fad diets, each one ultimately failing. It wasn’t until she started eating plant-based vegan that she saw the results she’d be longing for. Along with her new 80x20 lifestyle change, she began replacing one meal a day with a smoothie. Soon after came the idea of streamlining her smoothie making process by creating nutrient dense blender bombs. She began selling them to her fitness clients and the rest is history. Helen's approach to living 80% of the time on whole food plants (no meat, cheese, eggs, or dairy) with 20% being allowed a bit more wiggle room to indulge (don't go overboard of course), has been widely embraced by those searching for a sustainable healthy lifestyle. Helen and I chat about how she started and runs her business, the different diets she's tried, why they ultimately failed, and how she arrived at the plant-based lifestyle she leads today. We also get into some other fun subjects like the Human Design System, celery juice craze, Modern Medium, our shared high school dream of being fashion designers, and our beloved kitty cats!
