Kim McPhillip's story will blow you away! Imagine becoming pregnant during your senior year of high school and telling NO ONE, not one person, until the day of giving birth! This actually happened to Kim and it is a miraculous story. Can you imagine being 20 years old and already having been burned in a fire, as well as having a rare neurological issue? That is what happened to our friend, Addison Hudler. She has overcome so many difficult situations, and is still standing strong in her faith. Addison is currently a junior at Ouachita Baptist University.You may remember her mother, Amber Hudler, was on our first episode, and also our guest for Episode #126. In that first episode, Amber also discussed some of the topics we talk about with Addison, but now you will hear from the daughter's perspective. These episodes go well together.Addison was only 7 years old when there was an accident during a bonfire that caused 2nd degree burns on her face and hand. She was 12 when she started to develop strange symptoms that sent her to many doctors and hospitals, with no answers for a long while. They did finally get answers and treatment, but not without continued work.There is a quote from Jeremy Freeman which Addison likes to quote. Jessica Callahan has such a fascinating story! When she was five years old, her father was arrested and imprisoned. During his incarceration, he learned about Jesus and gave his life to the Lord. This changed the whole trajectory of his life! Jessica and I (Jill) met while serving at God Behind Bars, a ministry that goes into prisons to share the gospel with those behind bars. When I heard her story of why she serves, I knew we needed to have her tell her story. She also helps lead worship once a month when going into the prison.Jessica joined the Navy and served for 12 years. She is very adventurous and tells us about her love for skydiving which she has been doing since 2008. She is a go-getter and loves being in the air!The main thing she shares today is about overcoming a dependence on alcohol. This was a tough journey as she began to realize she was using it to cope and to self-medicate. There was pain she was numbing and needed to finally come to grips with. It forced her to become humble and search for help. Though not an easy road, she is now 861 days sober! Kelley La Marr is the sweetest! She is the Ministry Assistant for the Preschool Ministry at First Baptist Church of Owasso. She loves serving the staff and the little ones. She is a great addition to the ministry!Kelley was adopted as a child and raised with a wonderful family. She grew up, married the love of her life, Rocky, and had two children. Then in 2016 she had the joy of meeting eight out of her twelve blood-related brothers and sisters!However, 2016 ended up being a rough year for her. Four months after her joyous reunion with her birth family, her husband suddenly passed away. They had been married for 32 years and had built a wonderful life together. She also had several other close relatives pass away soon after that in a very short amount of time. It was grief upon grief. Hunter Wadlington is the Director of Programs at the Mission Community Resource Center in Owasso. She is so vital to helping those in need with resources and has added so much to the program. Her road to getting there is part of what we talk about. Sometimes our roads are not linear and we don't know where they will end up.Hunter and her husband, Christien, have been married for a little over two years. They met in their freshman year of high school and stayed best friends for ten years before realizing they were meant for each other! They are an amazing couple who help serve their community in Tulsa, OK.Hunter is originally from Virginia and her story of getting to Oklahoma is interesting with lots of turns. God had a plan the whole time, from the degree she wasn't sure what to do with, to her reluctance in moving to Owasso. Where do we start with this guest? She has been a pillar of strength and an example of love and grace. We are so in awe of her and excited for you to hear her story of redemption. Jennifer Beardslee is a dear friend to both of us! She and her husband, Bobby, have been married for 10 months. She has three amazing kids and one daughter-in-law: Camden and his wife, Maddie, Ryleigh and Valerie. In 2016 her life was hit with several bombs. In March, her very young nephew passed away. In June, she found out her marriage was in trouble, and she tried with all her strength to work it out for several months before he left. Rhonda McAlister and her husband, Jon, have been married for 35 years and have three sons, three daughters-in-law, three grandsons, and one granddaughter! She is a Pediatric Physical Therapist and works within schools to help students with special needs. She has a lot of style and can decorate a room like no other.Rhonda was adopted as a baby and tells us her story about what it was like to find out that she was adopted at five years of age. She grew up with amazing parents whom she loves dearly, and for whom she is extremely grateful. She feels so blessed. Katelyn McCormick is a joy to be around! She's bubbly and kind with a beautiful singing voice. Meredith Wade and her husband, Andrew, have been married for thirteen years and have three children. Andrew is the Student Minister at FBC Owasso and Meredith is busy homeschooling. Their road to this part of their journey has not always been easy, however. Meredith shares a painful time when they had tried to have a second child for several years and then miscarried. Imagine living in a place you love, in a community you adore, when you are told suddenly one day you can’t live there anymore. You are ushered out in a matter of days. That is what happened to Melissa Robinson and her family when they were working as field workers for a sending organization on a small island. The new government decided they were no longer welcome.Chris and Melissa Robinson and their three boys now live and work in Latvia. It is an interesting, exciting place that we don’t often hear about in the USA. Melissa has used her gift of playing guitar and singing Latvian music to invite their community members to attend house music concerts in their home. After going through a devastating divorce that rocked her world, she eventually reconnected with an old friend who helped spark that hope. April Brown and her family have spent many years reaching people overseas for the gospel! They spent a lot of time in the Czech Republic before moving to Italy. April and her husband, Steve, have been married for 25 years and have four kids, and they are missionaries with the International Mission Board.A few of their children are attending college in the United States. Imagine being in another country and getting a call that one of them was in a horrible car accident in California. That is what happened to them. They had to really trust that God was in control, no matter what. This story has a happy ending and there were wonderful people who stepped in to help their daughter until they could get there. Addiction is a difficult road for those in it and those around it. This reality is something with which Misti Marley is very familiar. Addiction greatly affects everyone involved.Misti has been married to her husband for 23 years. They have three boys, and both of them work for Rejoice Schools. Amber Sander has a beautiful family with three children. She and her husband, Joe, have been married for twelve years. They are raising Evelyn, Dahl, and Sylvia.Sylvia was born with a rare complication of having no arms and short femurs of different lengths. This was discovered during ultrasounds and created some anxiety of what life would look like for her. However, Sylvia is a beautiful and creative almost-five-year-old now! She is thriving with help from The Little Lighthouse School and much support from her family. Amber says it is our job as parents to nurture the mind, heart, and soul of our children. This conversation is a great reminder of God's sovereignty in every situation, and how sweet it is to trust in Him no matter what. To know Jenny Tooley is to love her! Jenny is one of the funniest, most genuine people you will ever meet. She is full of laughter and always up for a good dress-up theme day. She is the ultimate youth worker!Jenny and John have three children: Cody, Kyle, and Lindsey. When Lindsey was in high school, she had a strange thing happen physically. She started limping and having pains that did not have an explanation. After several doctor and specialist visits, they finally realized she had CIDP, an autoimmune disease. Lindsey went through a lot of turmoil throughout the rest of her high school years often having to get IVIG blood treatments. However, they had many "God-experiences" in this journey, including a visit from possible angels! Her story is full of both heartbreak and patient love; it is so inspiring and full of twists and turns. Amy's story sometimes seems like a novel. Amy grew up in OKC with her mom and step-dad. She was told many things about her birth father which led her to believe she would never get to know him. That all changed one day when he reached out to her while she was an adult. He explained the situation in a whole new light. Their story of reconnection and reconciliation is so beautiful, and could only be explained because of a Heavenly Father who has always been looking out for her and writing her story. Adopting a child from another country is a daunting journey in itself; add to that the child has significant special needs, and he is from a war-torn country. Anita Wyatt and her husband did just that. Already parents to five biological children of their own, they realized they were being called by God to bring home a little boy from Ukraine.Anita and her husband, Wayne, have been married for almost 25 years and have 6 kids between the ages of 13 and 22. In July of 2012, they went to Ukraine to adopt their child who was there. The story of how they heard about him, the timing involved, and the signs along the way are amazing! Kelly King has spent her life working in ministry. We have both benefited from her ministry and have been on the front row to experience her leadership! Growing up at Council Road Baptist Church in Oklahoma City with her as a youth leader was awesome.Kelly now lives in the Nashville area with her husband, Vic. They have been married for 35 years and have two grown kids. Tracie Webster has two amazing kids. One of those is her daughter, Ciara, who shared her story with us on Episode #110 of A Frayed Knot. You can hear her story there. Her younger child, her son Tanner, we will talk about today.Tracie shares with us that Tanner was born with Transposition of the Great Arteries, VSD, ASD, and Pulmonary Stenosis; he basically had four major heart defects which were unknown until he was born. He had to have a series of surgeries, the first being when he was about 6 months old, which lasted 14 hours! Add to that, she and her husband, Darby, had just moved out of state and had 5-year-old Ciara at the time, too!Tracie shares today that she feels she is the narrator of the story God wrote for their family. Vanessa Kehl tells us a very brave story about a difficult time in her youth that affected her for a very long time. Vanessa has been married to her husband, Andy, for 39 years. They have a daughter, Rachel. She is an accountant for a wheelchair company. At 17 years of age, Vanessa found out she was pregnant. Her circumstances caused her a great deal of fear, and she secretly chose toend that pregnancy. This decision would haunt her for the next 20 years.After high school, she joined a community theatre group that was performing "Godspell." Because of the story of that musical and the other Christians in the company, she came to know the real Jesus! We both took about 4-5 pages of notes in this fascinating conversation.Dr. Barbara Sorrels is a childhood trauma expert that we both heard in our teaching seminars; we were so excited that she agreed to chat with us on the podcast. She grew up in Washington, D.C. and began working in hospitals with children who had experienced trauma, and she knew this would be her mission. Dr. Sorrels writes books and trains others about how to recognize and deal with children who have experienced woundings that affected them deeply.Dr. Sorrels is a wife, mom, and grandmother. Her husband had a terrible accident while on a short-term mission trip to Africa that left him paralyzed. This happened while they were dating, and she has spent her life loving and caring for him. Her own experiences have shaped her faith and commitment to Christ and given her a deeper understanding of those she works with.She tells us the difference between trauma and severe stress, how to help regulate babies who have experienced trauma, and strategies for working with others. If you've been to Church on the Move, you've probably seen Priscilla Shields. She has been on staff there since 2006 in a variety of roles! She's been on the ministry side of it since 2019.Priscilla has been married to her husband, Mike, for 25 years and has two children, Brooklyn and Brayden. She is Korean/Italian and grew up with a single mother. Her father left when she was very young, and this became the beginning of trauma that would not come to a head until the age of 41, when she experienced some covered feelings of anger and pain. She says, "The hardness of the soil began to break up," and she final met "the real Jesus". Priscilla teaches us that we need to decide if we really trust that God is good. When we are exhausted and burned out, even from doing good things, it can suppress the gifts we've been given. We become enslaved to the pressures of the ordinary. To know Shay Gibbons is to love Shay Gibbons. Shay is a 21-year-old, spunky, talented girl with a beautiful voice and a heart for worship! Her story is woven with showings of God's presence, even in the midst of trauma. Shay was born to parents who were both addicted to meth. She lived in Arizona with her dad for most of her childhood, until her grandparents intervened and brought her to Oklahoma. They saw the at-risk situation in which she was living, and they pulled her out of it, providing stability and a godly home for her.Shay talks with us about having an addictive personality; she became addicted to pornography in middle school, and to alcohol and marijuana in high school. Gloria and Wayne Yeckley are about the most precious couple you could imagine! They have been married for 58 years and have a lot of wisdom to share. Their faithfulness to God and to each other is inspiring.Wayne and Gloria experienced a year of turmoil when a numerous amount of tragedies struck them all within three months' time. Our guest today is Kim Jones Morrison. She is married to her college sweetheart, Randy, and they have four kids. She is in charge of Enrollment and Admissions of Live Oak Classical School in Waco, TX. She also lives with an uninvited and unwelcome guest: Parkinsons disease. Kim's journey with Parkinson's began in 2009 with a pain in her shoulder and many doctor visits which resulted in hearing many times, "We don't know." A gauntlet of many tests and surgeries were to follow. Finally, getting her answer was a "gut punch;" it was something Kim never expected. Kim has had many treatments since and is still journeying on this difficult road. Her focus, however, has been on her Lord. Our special guest today is Elizabeth Boss. She and her husband Jacob have been missionaries for the International Mission Board since 2008. Their family has served in both Asia and Europe. She also grew up as a PK (that's a Pastor's Kid, for all non-PKers out there!). She has loved Jesus since her earliest memories, and she has desired to follow Him all her life. All of those sincere and true characteristics, however, did not keep her from experiencing panic attacks and crippling anxiety. She had her first attack while back in the States dealing with a family crisis. They eventually had to take an extended furlough while she got the help she needed. LaShane Hill is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and Director of OBU’s Kemp Marriage Family Therapy Program and a member of a group practice providing care through her private practice. She has spent 25 years in ministry and has devoted her life to helping others work through their trauma. Y'all, I literally cried through half of this episode. LaShane has had to work through her own personal trauma. As a child, she was raised in a home with enormous violence and witnessed a horrible fight between her parents. Hey, friends, it’s our 100th Episode!!!! We are so excited to have reached this mark! We are also very excited to have our guest for today….Christy Nockels! Can you even believe it?!? Christy has been a worship leader, singer, and songwriter for several decades. She also has her own podcast, Glorious in the Mundane. If that’s not enough, she has a book she’s written called, The Life You Long For, and has a new album close to release. Christy shared with us about her scary season of being faced with hearing loss after a virus. This hearing loss was thought to be permanent; however, God is still the God of miracles! She shares her journey with us today, and we are so thankful for her heart for the Lord and how He has used her gifts for His glory.
Christy Nockels Biography: As a worship leader for over 25 years, Christy Nockels would tell you that her heart is to simply lead others to connect and communicate with the living God. Christy began writing music and singing in the church at a young age, as the daughter of a pastor in Oklahoma. She met musician, Nathan Nockels, in 1993 at the Christian Artist Seminar in Estes Park, Colorado and the two married in 1995. The couple would form the Christian music duo, Watermark, touring nationwide and recording five acclaimed albums, including seven number one radio singles from 1998 to 2005, before laying down their Watermark journey for the sake of their family. Christy and Nathan were also among those invited by Louie and Shelley Giglio to be a part of the very first Passion Conference in Austin, TX, in 1997, which flourished into a fruitful twenty years of the couple songwriting and leading for the Passion Movement. Christy’s voice and heart can be heard on songs like, “Waiting Here For You,” as well as her songwriting featured on church anthems like, “Lord, I Need You,” and “Healing is in Your Hands.” Christy now records for Keeper’s Branch Records, the couple’s independent record label, where they’ve enjoyed releasing fan-favorites like Be Held; Lullabies for the Beloved. Christy also launched a podcast in 2016 called, “The Glorious in the Mundane,” which is intentionally focused on helping women in any season of life, find the wonder and awe of God in the moments of the here and now. Christy and Nathan live in Franklin, TN where they love to gather around the farm table and even make music with their three children, Noah, Elliana and Annie Rose. They also love to spend time making their home, affectionally called Keeper’s Branch, a place of rest for all who gather there.

This summer we are doing something a little different. We are going to take a few women from the Bible and talk about their Frayed Knots! We will be discussing these women and looking at them to see how we can still relate with and befriend them. The first episode of this series we are looking at Abigail (Old Testament) and a Woman on the Fringe ( New Testament). We have a lot to learn from these ladies. Abigail was married to a horrible man whose name actually meant "fool"! She was faithful and still tried to help him and follow what God was telling her. Her obedience and bravery led King David to change the direction he was headed. Not every woman in the Bible has their name mentioned. Turning to the New Testament, we find a woman who had been living with a blood disorder for 12 years! She knew the promises of Malachi 4:2 and trusted that by just touching the hem of His robe, she could be healed. This woman knew that there was healing in his wings (tassels of robe). She knew where power came from.

Twenty years ago, on May 27 of 2002, a bridge collapsed on I-40 in Oklahoma. Elizabeth Martin's parents were on that bridge, and she lost both of them. Elizabeth was 28 at the time, and she and her sister were left to cope with overwhelming grief and loss. In the last twenty years, she has moved, gotten married, and had a child. God has walked with her every step of the way. She has learned a lot of life lessons in her journey, and has many words of wisdom for us. She has chosen to walk with a grateful heart. She talks about grief as a spiral staircase, and compares the Christian life as a tightrope walk. She even went to tightrope-walking school! Elizabeth has an incredible story and an amazing outlook. You will learn a lot from this, and if you've ever gone through a grieving process you will understand where she is coming from. This is a hard story but many nuggets of truth are woven throughout.

Amber McMath is someone you need to know. She has been through it and is still trusting God each step of the way! She is so wise and knows who she is in Christ. Amber teaches at the Seventh Grade Center in Owasso. Her mother also taught there and was a huge influence on who she became. Amber watched her mom teach, and knew that's what she wanted to do, too! Her mother, Kelly Flindt, had cancer for seven years and taught through it until the end. She left quite a legacy. In January of 2020, Amber, her husband, AJ, and their son all got COVID. AJ ended up in the hospital and on a journey that is continuing even now. He has been on a ventilator, an intubator, and has had numerous surgeries to overcome his difficulties in fully recovering. It has been a long and tumultuous process, but they have been looking for where God is at work the whole time. Amber tells us to get ready for the battle. It's not if..., but when. We are commanded not to fear. God is too deep and too big to have to explain why. However, he is a constant companion on the road with us and, if we lean in and trust Him, He will show us the next step.

Jill has chosen a new hobby every year for the last 42 years! She has had all sorts of interesting pastimes, from memorization, to learning how to play unusual instruments, to learning magic tricks! One of her "hobbies" became her life's work and ministry: making cuffs. You will get to hear how that started, how a comment from Oprah changed things, and how Jill has learned to never lose her sense of wonder.
We learned about forgiving dream-stealers, not comparing our Chapter One to someone else's Chapter Twenty, and learning to always say "Yes" to God's prompting. Jill's story is one of hope, creativity, and inspiration. She has been through a lot and was so gracious to share her lessons of trusting in God each step of the way, even when the way doesn't seem clear. You will love this one!

When Jill Bowman got married, she didn't know the difficult journey that she and her husband would have to take. She married her high school sweetheart, Tom. They have two beautiful children and a beautiful story that will encourage your faith. Jill is a math teacher and works at Tulsa Tech. In 2009, her husband found out he had cancer in a very surprising way. What they thought was a sinus infection turned out to be much more. The next few years would bring challenges and valleys. They also grew closer to the Lord and closer to each other. Tom survived his cancer diagnosis and is healthy today! They learned more than they ever expected through their journey. Jill shares that God delights in the details. Even when we think He is silent and can't feel Him, He is there. He is not silent. He speaks to our souls, we need only to listen and trust. We are grateful to Tiffany for being so vulnerable and sharing her painful experience with us. Tiffany Davis tells us about being in an abusive relationship for over 20 years. She will tell us warning signs and red flags that were overlooked, how she covered it up so other people wouldn't see the reality of her situation. Thankfully, Tiffany's story doesn't end there; she finally got out of the harmful and dangerous spot she was in. She is now in a happy, healthy relationship with her new husband. She has three daughters and is a member of First Baptist Church of Owasso. Debbie talks about growing up with two deaf parents and what that was like as a hearing child. She is also working on becoming a certified Sign Language interpreter. Her heart for that comes from a very personal place. It was a devastating and heartbreaking journey, but she has come out on the other side of it now with grace and wisdom. Pam Taylor has been through some heavy and difficult storms, and she has come out of those storms with a rock solid faith in God. She was married for 33 years and had two children. One of those children had very special needs that required continuous care. Pam's story is touching and inspirational; her sacrificial love is so apparent in her humble telling of this story. Let's get physical! Lara Myers is a personal fitness trainer and the Zumba Queen of Owasso! She and her high school sweetheart, Brad, have been married for 25 years and have three children. She spends her days, and many of her evenings at the gym, helping women feel better and stronger. Like so many, Lara has struggled with anxiety. The road to personal training was filled with questions and stress. She was unsure of herself and became a little afraid. Cami Kasterke has a beautiful story! She and Lester have been married for 24 years. They have a beautiful family with three girls. The road to get there, however, was difficult. Cami found out at an early age that getting pregnant may not be possible due to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Being a Labor and Delivery nurse put this diagnosis foremost in her thoughts all day, every day. It was a journey that was painful. They decided to go the route of in vitro fertilization. This took months of hormone treatments and then having eggs implanted and then frozen. Because of this process, she now has her Hope, Hannah, and Hadley! We discuss the emotional toll this took on she and her husband, and also the ethical dilemmas at play when you have frozen eggs that could become little people! What if they aren't all used? What do you do? Cami has also worked as a school nurse and now works in hospice care. We are grateful for her giving to others in her field and for her story of hope.

Alzheimers is a cruel disease. It is so difficult to watch a loved one succumb to such a thing. Anyone who has ever had to witness someone they love suffer it can understand the sadness of watching as it takes hold. Abbe Belcher shares with us her journey of loving and serving her parents in the last seasons of their lives. Abbe's family took her parents in to live with them for 17 years. On top of that, her mother was blind! Through all of these challenges they created a beautiful family and household of generations taking care of each other. Misael Gonzalez is the Bilingual Teaching Pastor of First Baptist Church of Owasso. He graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University and joined the staff of our church. He had a pivotal moment in his life at 16 which strangely and beautifully coincided with his mother's story from when she was 16! The way God has interwoven this story is phenomenal! He will also talk about a situation of domestic violence that happened to a member of his family. He is very honest and raw about his feelings concerning this difficult time, and how it has affected his entire family. We are created for community. This has been made obvious through the pandemic year we've all lived through. It’s been hard on all of us. Today's guest shares her story of how God has brought her and her family through the hardships of coronavirus and isolation. Melissa Zumwalt is the Assistant Athletic Director for Owasso Public Schools. She grew up a dancer and has also coached dance teams and pom squads. She talks about some times during 2020 that she questioned her next step, as she felt the Lord stirring her heart to change directions. She will also talk about the hardships of this past year, specifically in watching one of her children tread through some dark days after an injury derailed cherished plans and a pandemic became isolating. When you are watching someone you love go through hard things you wish you could take away, it’s devastating. But..there is hope! And it often brings intimate times with God as we wrestle and question and trust that His plans are good.

She is the Ministry Wives Ministry Partner for Oklahoma Baptists. Amy is a wife to Brandon, mom to three handsome boys, and lives in Edmond, Oklahoma. Trained as a teacher, she has a unique 25-year background in youth and adult education, writing and teaching Bible studies, speaking at women’s events, discipling young women, and serving as a minister’s wife alongside her husband who was formerly in full-time ministry. She has a passion for communicating the truth of God’s word that reaches into our messy, broken places and the gracious power of Jesus that sets us free. Her journey has not always been an easy ride, and she has known her own journey with heartbreak. Her message is for all of us. God is good; what He does is good; He has a good plan for me. Tonya Loving lives up to her name! She loves her kids at school, her family, and others fiercely. If you are thinking 'strength and forgiveness,' she will come to mind. Tonya works at Stone Canyon Elementary in Owasso Public Schools. She knows the students in that building by name and they know she is there for them. She is a wife, mom, and grandmother-with the name Lovee! ❤❤ She is going to share about a horrible tragedy that happened to her family in 2011. The unthinkable occurred when her pregnant niece was murdered in a drug incident. What happens next is a story of forgiveness and seeing others as people who are more than the worst thing they've ever done. Her mantra is to tell her students, "Let your light shine!" This story begins with their son, Xander, being diagnosed with cancer at age 2 1/2. This was a nine-year-long, excruciating battle of hills and valleys. One of the things Ricki Lea shares with us is that she learned God's greatest purpose is not always for our immediate comfort. She reminds us that God will carry us through our darkest hours. He is there in your midst and wants to "dazzle you" with His plan, as Xander would say.

Mark is currently serving in Pastoral Development for Oklahoma Baptist Ministers, and formerly served with Lifeway and pastored several churches. Janet has been by his side every step of the way. If you've ever had chronic pain and wondered how you would ever make it through the valley, this episode is for you! And, if you haven't... it's still for you! None of us knows what's around the corner, and there will certainly be a time that we will relate to this story in our personal lives or in the lives of our loved ones. Desha Clawson has been married to her husband, Casey, for 40 years. They have four sons and two daughters-in-law. She is so amazing and someone Robin and Jill desire to emulate! Last year, she had been dealing with TMJ and went to have it checked out. It turned out that she needed a partial jaw replacement. If you've ever had mouth pain, you know it is all-consuming. At this same time, she was dealing with sciatic pain from a previous rollerblading accident! (How much do we love that she rollerblades?) The pain became so severe that she found herself having confusing thoughts about ending things permanently. Thankfully, she reached out to Jesus and he provided a way out. They are also called the Anger Triad, and each type deals with anger in a different way. Terri Vaughn is representing our Eights. She is assertive, decisive, and a challenger. If there is a move that needs to be made, she will do it. Eights are for justice, fairness, and looking out for their own. They are tough on the outside, soft on the inside. Our very own Robin Wall is our Nine. Nines are peacekeepers. They do not like conflict. They can see every side to a problem. Nines often have a hard time finding their type because they relate to every type! They would like for everyone to get along. Amy Simons is our One. Ones are the perfectionists or reformists. They see what needs to be fixed and fix it. They have to deal with an inner critic that tells them what is wrong and what needs to be corrected. When they say they will do something, they do it. They also all three deal with fear in different ways. Our three guests give us insight into how they see the world. David Simons is our Type 5. He is analytic, skeptical, and intelligent. Enneagram Fives are our observers and/or investigators. They are typically introverted and analytical, motivated by a drive to understand and gather knowledge. Tamara Thompson is our resident Type 6. She is also Jill’s sister! Enneagram Sixes are our Loyalists. They are the “ride or die” friends They look out for the whole, and what is best for everyone. They tend to fight with anxiety and “worst case scenario” more than others. They are motivated by a need for security and consistency. Jill McCormick is repping our Enneagram Sevens! Sevens just want to have fun! They are known as the enthusiasts and are very "big picture," rather than "detail" people. They tend to fight with just wanting more of the fun thing. So, let’s talk about it.. the racial inequality in our country is something we all have a front-row seat to right now. So, we pushed some episode ideas back for a couple of weeks because we wanted to have a straight discussion about these important things going on. We want to face the issues and discuss how we can navigate these difficult waters with wisdom. KJ and Cambri Washington are a beautiful mixed race couple that go to First Baptist Church of Owasso. We asked if we could get their perspective on some things, and they were kindly willing to do that. We talk about what it was like for them dating, and how they have experienced systemic racism; we talk about the police, and yes, we go all those places. This couple is so wise and honest! Something Cambri says we should be doing is to listen, believe the stories, make it personal, and empathize with others. We know this is a hot button for a lot of people right now and our goal is to have real, honest conversations about how to see God in the midst of the messes in our world. He is working through our struggles.

Kim Cusimano has been through it! She and her husband, Joe, have four children between the ages of 16 and 23. They were all four adopted from Korea. Joe and Kim's journey to adopt these children and the challenges in raising them have been anything but easy, but through it all, God has shown Himself powerful and present. Two of their four children have severe needs, one emotional/mental, one physical/developmental. This journey takes us through adoption, uncertainty and loving wonderful kids who have special needs. There is something for everyone in it. Kim has also followed the Lord's leading in creating a website and a place of respite and encouragement to other families dealing with these sorts of situations. God has shown Himself to be so faithful in holding things together for our guest, Brenda Liniger. She candidly shares her story with us, opening up and being vulnerable so that God can use her life to bless others. She is such a fun and real person. You all will love how authentic she is. We talk about her growing up in a Catholic family, but not really ever opening the Word or understanding anything about it. She didn’t meet Jesus until after she was grown and married. Brenda shares that there are hard things in marriage, but it is still good to push through that with your spouse. We talk about shame and what that does to a person; in particular, Brenda opens up about the shame she dealt with after a sexual assault in her teens.. It’s an important message.
Brenda also shares with us that, although her parents are wonderful grandparents to her children, she has painful memories of her growing up years. She loves her parents and appreciates them very much, and prays for God to bring all of her family closer. It's something many people may identify with. Emily Wall, daughter of "A Frayed Knot" co-host Robin Wall, shares her story with us today. Emily is a college senior planning to graduate in May with a degree in English Education and a minor in Spanish. She has a heart for mentoring and discipleship. She refers to discipleship as "living life on life." Emily encourages us all to seek out a wise friend to walk a step behind, as well as to lead a friend who is walking one step behind you. She explains to us the evangelism method of storying, and tells us about her recent mission trip to Columbia. You will love her and her heart! Her faith has strengthened her through the times of frayed knots and the times of smooth waters.
"Hold my floaties; I'm going deep!" Talk about frays and knots in your frayed knots, Pam Wilson has seen her share. Starting with a difficult childhood and an alcoholic father, she was often lonely and felt lost. She tried a variety of things to fill the emptiness inside: men, drugs, parties, and success, but none of those things satisfied her. She knew there had to be something more to life. Then she met Jesus and everything changed! Pam now works in pediatric anesthesiology. She's been on several mission trips and worked to help those in need, including some trips to the US border between Texas and Mexico. You will be encouraged to hear how God can do anything in your life, no matter how far away you've wandered. Nothing is impossible for God!

We cover a lot of topics in our conversation: transition from high school to college, loneliness, open doors for ministry, spiritual questioning, sexual harassment, and even the death of a friend. Quinn candidly talks from the perspective of a senior in college about her first two years as a college student, and how they were not what she expected them to be. There were many headaches and difficulties that she dealt with. Quinn shares about trusting God through the pain she went through. Jill relates the challenge of being a parent, watching her child go through circumstances which were extremely painful, and taking the position of being present, praying for her, and accepting the fact that mom couldn't "fix" it. Jill honestly shares that sometimes there are things in your child's journey that she has to walk through, and the parent's job is to provide support and prayer, and that's all.

Angela Byrd shares her moving story with us as she talks about a time in her life when she was in such a deep valley, she felt that she almost couldn't recognize her own life. Her late husband, Dennis Byrd, was a talented and well-known NFL football player who played for the New York Jets. A career-ending injury caused him to be paralyzed. However, he overcame and walked again! You might remember the book/movie "Rise and Walk" that was written/produced about their story.
Dennis and Angela spent time speaking to churches and FCA groups, sharing their story of faith in God and overcoming the odds. But things aren't always what they seem. The injury had changed Dennis inside. He had difficulty regulating his emotions, particularly his anger. The husband Angela knew before was not the same person. He had become dangerous, and this was extremely hard on their family.
Just as they were beginning to make a turn for the better, and Dennis had mended his relationship with God and Angela, Dennis was killed in a tragic car accident.
Listen to Angela's story of faith and hope through tragedy. We got chills so many times during the recording of this conversation. The power of God is so moving as she shares with us her journey.
