A talk delivered to the Guild of Catholic Scholars in St. Saviour's Priory, Dublin, on Saturday, 1st, February. In it Fr. Terence Crotty, lecturer on Scripture in the Dominican Studium, Dublin, shows how Scholarship on the Bible has happily changed and evolved in recent decades in a way that gives greater and greater support for Christian Faith, as we should except from this sacred book.
This is a brief Gospel reflection on the fifth Sunday of Ordinary time. Jesus says to His disciples: You are the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
This weeks Gospel Reflection is for the 4th week of Advent. It is the story on how Jesus came to be born as narrated in the Gospel of Matthew.

The Gospel Reflection for Week 33 of Year C. Jesus comments on the end of times and what to expect.
The Sadducees challenge Jesus in the Gospel of this Sunday, trying to catch Him out. Jesus however, as often, uses the opportunity to reveal a little more of the mystery of who God is and what Heaven is about.
The Gospel passage this Sunday is the passage where Jesus travels through Jericho and Zacchaeus the tax collector climbs into a tree to see Jesus.
This weeks Gospel Reflection from St. Mary's is on this Sunday Gospel taken from Luke 18:9-14.
Central is the parable of the tax collector and the pharisee.
This weeks Gospel is from Luke 18:1-8. It is about the widow who goes to the unjust judge and continues to ask justice from him until he gives in and gives her her just rights.

The great Solemnity of Pentecost.

The Holy Spirit, on the other hand, makes hearts capable of understanding the languages of all, as he re-establishes the bridge of authentic communion between earth and heaven. The Holy Spirit is Love".
The great Solemnity of the Ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven.
Our Holy Father Pope Francis tells us that, "the Ascension of Jesus into heaven acquaints us with this deeply consoling reality on our journey that in Christ, true God and true man, our humanity was taken to God. Christ opened the path to us. Jesus is the one eternal High Priest who with his Passion passed through death and the tomb and ascended into heaven. He is with God the Father where he intercedes for ever in our favour (cf. Heb 9:24).”

- You are great, Lord, and highly to be praised (Ps 47:2), great is your power and your wisdom is immeasurable (Ps 146:5). Man, a little piece of your creation, desires to praise you, a human being bearing his mortality with him (2 Cor 4:10), carrying with him the witness of his sin and the witness that you resist the proud (1 Pet 5:5). - It is one thing to catch a glimpse from a wooded summit of the homeland of peace and not to find the way to it, but vainly to attempt the journey along an impracticable route surrounded by the ambushes and assaults of fugitive deserters with their chief, the lion and the dragon (Ps 90:13). It is another thing to hold on to the way that leads there, defended by the protection of the heavenly emperor (Confessions VII.xxi.27).
- Let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in revelling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires (Romans 13:13-14).
- I neither wished nor needed to read further. At once, with the last words of this sentence, it was as if a light of relief from all anxiety flooded into my heart. All the shadows of doubt were dispelled (Confessions VIII.xii.29).

Earlier in the year the three brothers who completed last years noviciate made their First Profession into the Dominican Order.
The brothers who spend a year in our Noviciate in Cork have now made their First Profession to continue with the next step in their life as a Dominican. In our Studium, which is in St. Saviour’s priory in Dublin, they are now studying philosophy and theology for the next few years to come and, with the help of God, to be ordained priest subsequently.

Brothers Matthew Farrell and Jesse Maingot, members of the Irish Dominican Province, were ordained deacons in St Saviour’s church, Dublin, yesterday, 2 April, by Bishop Denis Nulty.
Matthew Farrell is a native of Daingean, Co. Offaly. Jesse Maingot is a native of Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies. Bro. Jesse does his formation as a Dominican in Ireland as the Dominican Priories in Trinidad and Tobago are part of the Irish Province.
Both men joined the Order in 2012, making profession of solemn vows (lifelong commitment) in 2017. Brother Matthew and Brother Jesse will continue their studies in theology as part of the journey towards being ordained priests in the summer of 2019.

On Wednesday 7th February the Commission for Studies organised a study day for the Irish Province of the Dominican Order on the issue of the referendum to amend the Irish Constitution which proposes to remove the right to life of the unborn.
Five speakers addressed the study day:
- Fr. John Harris OP of the Studium presented the Thomistic understanding of human law.
- Prof. Gerry Whyte of Trinity College Dublin presented the profound legal ramifications of the proposed amendment.
- Ms. Maria Steen, a barrister at law and an accomplished journalist and social commentator presented the political background to the amendment and its disturbing effects on culture politically, socially and medically.
- Finally two brave mothers from Every Life Counts, Tracy and Vicky, shared their own personal stories as parents of children who were diagnosed with a terminal condition. They put a very human face on the issues that we will have to preach about and give guidance on.
We invite you to listen to the talks and to reflect seriously on the issues involved and support the campaign to save the lives of babies by helping to defeat the referendum to repeal Article 4.3.3. of the Irish Constitution.

Sometimes there might be a temptation to say that it was easy for them to believe in Jesus as all these events happened before their eyes. When talking about with people about the vocation to religious life, and specifically the Dominican Life, one of the recurring questions is what a day in the life of a Dominican Brother is like. So we took a camera into our Studium in Dublin to give a taste of what the day in the life of a student brother of the Dominican Order is like.
Naturally the routine for the brothers who have completed their studies the day is slightly is different as they go about their own ministries. But the general structure, where communal prayers form the hinges of the day would be what constitutes the fundamental aspect of a day as a Dominican brother.
Our Studium, the place where we do our theological formation, is located in St. Saviour's Priory, Dublin 1, Ireland.

Four of our brothers made their First Profession into the Dominican Order on the 15th of September, the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. The The novices who have spend the last year in our Noviciate in Cork have now made their First Profession. The next step in their life as a Dominican is to go to our Studium which is St. Saviour’s priory in Dublin. There they will study philosophy and theology in the coming years.
We congratulate brothers Gary Toman O.P., Ruaidhri Grieve O.P., Peter O’Kane O.P. and Ciaran Egan O.P. on their commitment as they continue their formation within the Dominican Order in the coming years.
This week Fr. Luuk O.P. goes back to the Summa Theologicaof St. Thomas Aquinas on the program the Light of Truth. Fr. Luuk recaps briefly the aim of the Summa and the reason of studying our faith. The second part of the program looks at the question if science and logic can help in showing that God exists.

Brother Philip Mulryne OP was ordained a priest for the Dominican Order (Order of Preachers) by His Grace Archbishop Joseph Augustine Di Noia OP during the 11.00am celebration of Mass in Saint Saviour’s Church, Dominican Street on the 8th of July. Archbishop Augustine Di Noia is Assistant Secretary at the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith and he travelled from Rome for today’s special ceremony.
Philip Mulryne was born in Belfast, and whilst playing for his parish soccer team: Saint Oliver Plunkett, Philip was spotted by a scout for Manchester United Football Club and invited as a 14 year old to go to Manchester for a trial. Philip impressed and then signed a schoolboy contract for 2 years. In 1994 Philip finished secondary school and went to Manchester United full time as a professional on a four-year contract. Making his debut in 1997 against Ipswich Town Football Club, Philip played five times in total for the first team before being transferred to Norwich City Football Club in 1999, playing 135 times for Norwich City during a period of six years. Philip made his debut for the Northern Ireland Football Team in 1997 against Belgium and went on to play 27 times for Northern Ireland, scoring three goals.
After short spells at Cardiff City and Leyton Orient, Philip retired officially from football in 2009 and entered the Diocesan Seminary of Saint Malachy’s Belfast, spending two years studying philosophy at Queens University Belfast and at the Maryvale Institute. Philip completed his studies in philosophy and went to the Pontifical Irish College, Rome, to study theology for one year at the Gregorian University before discerning a call to religious life. Philip entered the Dominican Novitiate House in Cork in 2012.

This week we start to move from Question 2 in the Summa Theologica of St. Thomas Aquinas, which is on the existence of God, to Question 3, which starts to look at what we can know about God.
Fr. Luuk OP will look at St. Thomas' approach in learning things about God. St. Thomas writes that thewre is two ways to know things about God, the first is revelation and the second through reason, or philisophy. Both these ways have come to the fore in the last two epsiodes by looking at how God releals himself to us and how we can reason about God's existence. Now we will look at some things we can know about God mainly through philosophy.

Fr. Luuk Jansen OP talks with Fr. John Harris OP about Saint Thomas as a theologian and the reason he wrote the Summa. There will also be a review on the structure of the work, and the fundamental role of God in the doing of Theology. It is not the intention to provide a commentary on the Summa in the program but rather to use the questions in the Summa to look at our faith and make it more relevant in our own lives by deepening our understanding of God.

To specifically mark the 800th anniversary of the Dominican Order, which got it's appoval from Pope Honorious III on the 22nd of December 1216, various Dominican communities had specicial celebrations.
In St. Saviour's in Dublin a special Holy Hour with Benediction was held in the evening, and Solemn Vespers was celebrated at 6pm. The included video shows a brief summary of the celebration.

Bro. Philip Mulryne OP was ordained deacon in St. Saviour’s Dublin on Saturday the 29th of October.
Bro. Philip was ordained by the Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin, during a Mass celebrated at 2:30 pm in St. Saviour’s. Bro. Philip was joined by his family, friends and many Dominican brothers on this joyous occasion.
Bro. Philip will with the help of God be ordained to the priesthood sometime during the coming year, so please keep him in your prayers as he continues his studies.

The Irish Dominican Province has its own theology Studium, or House of Studies located in the north city center of Dublin. St. Saviour’s Priory houses the student brothers during the years of their initial formation and intellectual studies leading to their ordination to the priesthood. Apart from the brothers of the Irish Dominican Province brothers from the Provinces of Malta and Poland as well as a student from the Benedictine Silverstream Priory in Co. Meath and a Conventual Franciscan from Fairview finishing off his studies as he prepared for his priestly ordination..

God draws us closer to Him through Grace. Grace is our communion, our participation, into the Divine Life of God. The more we are open to grace and participate in the grace of God the more it's transforming effect shapes our lives. Grace does not take away our freedom, but enables us to life instead in total freedom to do what is right, good and beautiful.

This video shows a brief account of the Mass during which the new novices of the Irish Province of the Dominican Order receive their habit. The reception of the habit, on the feast day of the Exaltation of the Cross which is the Feast of the Province, marks the start of their noviciate. In the noviciate the new novices continue to discern their vocation to the Dominicans in the coming year.
In the second part the outgoing novices make their Simple Profession. They promise obedience to the Master of the Order for three years and Fr. Gregory Carroll OP, prior provincial, takes the vows representing the Master of the Order. The newly professed brothers will now start their formal studies in our studium in St. Saviour's, Dublin.

The Irish Dominican friars rejoiced as eight of their brothers were ordained to the priesthood in Saint Saviour’s Dominican church, Dominick Street in Dublin. The ordaining prelate was Archbishop Robert Rivas OP of the Diocese of Castries in the Caribbean. Archbishop Rivas is part of the Irish Dominican province and came specially over to ordain our eight brothers in this special year of the 800th Jubilee of the Dominican Order.
The brothers ordained to the priesthood are brs David McGovern OP, Damian Polly OP, Ronan Connolly OP, Pat Desmond OP, Daragh McNally OP, Connor McDonagh OP, Eoin Casey OP and Kevin O’Reilly OP.
Our brothers were joined by many friars of the province, families and friends to witness the joyful liturgy of ordination.
This week "the Light of Truth" is recorded in Knockadoon, co. Cork. In Knockadoon the Dominicans run a youth camp, called Knockadoon Camp. During the summer various different groups come to the camp to provide a week away with various themes. Knockadoon has a capacity up to about 150 people, and these numbers are occasionally topped.
During this week the Knockadoon Youth Weeks are on, and Fr. Luuk OP talks with Fr. Maurice OP and Br. Philip OP about Knockadoon and espeically what the Knockadoon Youth Weeks are about.
This week in "The Light of Truth" Fr. David Barrins OP and Fr. Luuk Jansen OP continue the discussion on the topic of "Faith and Science".
The perception these days seems often that Faith and Science are opposed to each other. However, a more carefull investigation into the fact actually shows the opposite, that Faith and Science complement each other. Science is not against Faith, but actually supports and confirms it. This year the Dominican Order celebrates their 800th Jubilee of the foundation of the order.
This short video gives some history of the Irish Province since the Dominicans arrived in Ireland almost 800 years ago in 1224.
On the occasion of the Jubilee 800, and on the Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas, there was a ‘Jubilee Aquinas Lecture’.
The lecture was delivered by Dr. Rik Van Nieuwenove, Lecturer in Theology at the Department of Theology and Religious Studies, Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.
The lecture, entitled “Contemplation, Learning and the University in Aquinas”, was followed by the celebration of Solemn Vespers in the church with the community of St. Saviour’s.

Brs Pat Desmond and Kevin O’Reilly were ordained by the Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin, on the Feast of the Epiphany. The Provincial, Fr. Gregory Carroll OP mentioned at the end of the mass that the Irish Province had not had this many deacons since the early 70’s. Please keep the new (and old) deacons in your prayers as they prepare for their priestly ordination in the summer.
This short video gives an impression of the celebration of the start of the 800 years Jubilee of the Dominican Order.
Many of the brethren came from all over Ireland to share in the celebration which included two talks, one on the history of the Irish Province, and a second on the Theology of Jubilee in the Old Testament.
After the two talks there were was Solemn Vespers and a festive dinner.
We are delighted to welcome our four new novices to the Province. During the 11am mass in St. Mary's, Cork, the Provincial, Fr. Gregory Carroll OP, clothed the new novices in the habit of the Dominican Order.
The new novices were joined by their family and friends as well as many of the brethren from around the country. The Novice Master, Fr. Stephen Hutchinson OP, now takes charge of the novices for the coming year. The novices begin to live the life of a Dominican, praying with the community, having classes in the history and traditions of the Order, studying the Constitutions and spending time in personal prayer before the Lord.
The Irish province typically clothes new novices in the habit of the Order on the 14th of September, the feast of the Triumph of the Cross. Thus, not only is this day a day of celebration due to the reception of new novices, it is also a day of celebration for the wider province as the brethren remember their own reception of the habit.
Please keep the novices in your prayers during the coming year as they follow St. Dominic towards the Lord Jesus Christ.
This video is a recording of the homily given by Fr. John Harris OP, the Regent of Studies for the Irish province, at the Mass for the closing of the Academic Year 2015. The Mass was celebtrated in our Studium in Dublin by Fr. Harris who was joined by the community and the teaching staff of the Studium.
The Irish Province of the Dominicans rejoiced today at the ordination to the Diaconate of six of its student brothers. Br's David McGovern, Damian Polly, Ronan Connolly, Daragh McNally, Conor McDonough and Eoin Casey were ordained this afternoon by His Grace, Diarmuid Martin, the Archbishop of Dublin. Many of the brothers from the wider province were present to witness the largest ordination in the province since the early 1970's.
The six brothers ordained have been studying philosophy and theology at St. Saviours for the past six years and will continue their studies until their ordination to the priesthood next year, coinciding with the celebrations of the Order for the 800th anniversary of its foundation.
The newly ordained will begin their ministry of service in St. Saviours before venturing out into the wider province to preach and gain experience of different communities and pastoral situations. Please keep these newly ordained deacons in your prayers as they enter their final year of studies and preparation for priesthood.

This month at the St Saviour's Symposium, Dr Susan Hegarty (St Patrick's College, Drumcondra) spoke about what's happening in Higher Education in Ireland, and proposed some practices Catholics in education can establish in order to help re-focus education on the higher things.
On the 5th of July brothers Colm Mannion OP and Luuk Dominiek Jansen OP were ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Dairmuid Martin, Archbishop of Dublin and Primate of Ireland. It was a very prayer and joyful day.

On the 7th of September six Dominican brothers made their solemn vows to the Dominican Order. The Solemn Vows are their profession to be part of the order until death.

The 14th of September, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, is the traditional day in which new novices in the Irish Province of the Dominicans receive their habit and start their noviciate year.
The next day, the 15th of September which is the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, the novices who finished their noviciate year make their simple profession and who will subsequently move to the student house in St. Saviour's, Dublin.

Happy Christmas! Nollaig shone dhaoibh go léir! Today, Jesus is born in Bethlehem. What does this mean for you and for me? It means everything’s changed - because in the manger we see that God loves us more than we can imagine, and ‘nobody is an outsider to this happiness’.
The Letter to Diognetus is one of the most interesting documents we have from the early Church. It was probably written in the second century, and is an example of early Christian apologetics, that is, explaining the Christian faith to pagans. We don’t know who wrote this text, the author refers to himself only as ‘a disciple’. In the segment we will hear today, the writer reflects on how the coming into the world of the Son of God is a revelation of God’s love for us.
We continue our series of Advent readings today with another excerpt from St Augustine’s writings – I warned you that he wrote a lot! Today he’s talking about one of his favourite topics: desire! For Augustine, having desire in our hearts is a good thing, but it must be desire for the right things. Ultimately, he thinks, desire will lead us to God, who alone can satisfy us completely. In the meantime, we should be like lovers yearning for the presence of the Beloved. And so, as the days get darker, our yearning for the light of Bethlehem grows stronger and stronger.

We hear again this week from St Augustine, the great teacher of the Christian West. In today’s reading, he’s comparing the figures of John the Baptist and Christ. John the Baptist is a great Advent figure. He reminds us that preparing for Christmas involves not only buying presents, but also a spiritual preparation: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord’ he says! He teaches us also the great virtue of humility too – he wished only to stand aside when Christ arrived on the scene. This is the humility with which we should be approaching the Christ-child in the cradle...
St Augustine was a Roman African who lived in the dying days of the Roman Empire, he was a bishop, a theologian, and one of the greatest minds of the early Church. He wrote and preached an enormous amount of material, and we hear today a selection from his teaching on the book of Psalms.
This is the first episode of our new series Reason for the Season. This episode will look at the season for Advent, and explain for example the symbolism of the Advent wreath and the color of the vestments used.
In 1962, Pope John XXIII opened the Second Vatican Council, a gathering of several thousand bishops whose task was to rearticulate the teaching of the Church in the context of the modern world. Today, we hear from one of the documents they produced, Lumen Gentium, the Constitution on the Church. We hear that the Church doesn’t just look backwards to Jesus, but also looks forward to the end of time, when He will come again, and inaugurate a new heaven and a new earth. In Advent, we remind ourselves that we are a people of hope, yearning for the second coming of Christ.
Our second Advent reading is from another well-loved bishop: St Charles Borromeo. He was born into a powerful Italian family, and was lined up for a career in the Church. The Church in Italy at this time was notoriously corrupt, though – when Charles’ uncle was elected Pope in 1559, he made Charles a cardinal, despite the fact that he was only 22 years old, and hadn’t even been ordained a priest! Despite all this, Charles became a wonderful bishop, with a great love for his people and a desire for holiness in his priests. At a time when many bishops neglected their flocks, St Charles paid great attention to their education in the faith. This reading is taken from a pastoral letter written to the faithful in his diocese of Milan, explaining to them the meaning of the liturgical season of Advent.
The writer of today’s reading was a Christian from the Middle East, who became bishop of Jerusalem in 335. Cyril was his name. As bishop, he had great care for the poor, and he was also very involved in political life, but it is as a teacher that he is best known. The passage that we will hear today is from his Catechesis, that is, his teaching to newly baptized adults. It’s part of the Advent liturgy because it lays out two major Advent themes: the coming of the Son of God as a man, which we celebrate at Christmas, and the second coming of Christ at the end of time, to which we look forward in expectation and hope.
Welcome to the new audio series, ‘Ears to Hear’, produced by the Dominican students of the Irish Province for our website dominicansinteractive.com. We took the name for this series from a line in the book of Revelation: ‘You that have ears to hear, listen to what the Spirit says to the churches’ (Rev 3:22). We know that the Spirit has never let the Church down, but has continued to speak through the teaching of the Church, and the wonderful witness of the saints. This series seeks to make some spiritual classics of the Christian tradition accessible to the Internet age. We have some real gems to share with you, from the Rhineland mystics, to St Augustine, from St Gregory Nazianzen to the many anonymous poets and preachers who have witnessed to the Truth. We hope that through these texts, with their vivid imagery and profound wisdom, you the listener will hear the voice of the Spirit speaking to the Church today. We hope that these readings will not replace Scripture, but will show that the Word of God did not fall silent with the return of Christ to the Father, but that it constantly echoes and reverberates in the communion of saints. You will hear different emphases, major chords and minor chords, trumpets and strings, but all the time, please God, it will be the same Word that is spoken, the same Spirit that speaks. May we all have ears to hear.

Holy Saturday is an eerily silent day. There is no morning Mass, no bells ringing, no choirs singing. Instead, all the Christian world is in silent mourning – the Beloved is dead, and they have laid him in the tomb. Something is going on within the silence though, imperceptibly. Christ descends and says to all the dead: ‘Awake’!

This usually happened in Easter week, after they had experienced them, so they were looking back in time, having the significance of these great ceremonies expounded in detail. A reading from the homily of Melito of Sardis on the Pasch
The writings of Melito of Sardis come very early on in the life of the Church. He died around the year 180, and was bishop in what is now Turkey. This excerpt from one of his Easter homilies gives us an overview of the Paschal Mystery: that is, the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and their effects on us. Melito delves into the Old Testament too, to point out that the Paschal Mystery itself is prefigured in the story of Israel. It’s helpful to get this ‘big picture’ perspective on the Pasch, before we descend into the darkness of Good Friday, and the silence of Holy Saturday.
Lent is a preparation for the events of Easter – the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. It’s good, then, to spend some time thinking about these events, preparing for our solemn commemoration of them at Easter. In this excerpt we hear the thoughts of Pope St Leo the Great on the Cross of Christ, and he imagines the dying Christ addressing death, saying: ‘Death, I shall be your death’. Have a listen, and ponder, in gratitude, the mystery of the saving Cross.

What do you do during Lent? Most people answer this question by saying they ‘give something up’ for Lent. This ‘giving things up’, which we call penance or fasting, is a vital part of our preparation for Easter, but there are two other equally important elements. Listen to this sermon of St Peter Chrysologus to find out what they are...
Lent is a good time to start putting right our relationship with God. Sometimes, we can be distant from God, and we need to learn to draw close to him, but other times we treat God like a cute little puppy, one that we can train to suit our own interests. At times like this, we need to learn what the Bible calls ‘fear of the Lord’. This doesn’t mean being frightened of God, but being aware of the greatness and majesty of God, and of our own littleness and weakness... Have a listen to St Hilary explaining the true nature of ‘the fear of the Lord’.
Lent isn’t all about suffering and beating ourselves up. St Paul warns us: ‘If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing’. All our fasting, almsgiving and prayer should lead to greater love in our hearts, and this obscure homily by Asterius of Amasea, a 4th century bishop in Cappadocia, encourages us to love like shepherds, indeed, how to love as the Good Shepherd himself.
One of the earliest Christian texts we have outside the New Testament is the letter of Pope St Clement I to the Corinthians. It was written because the Corinthians were having problems with disunity in their Church. The following excerpt brings the Corinthians back to basics: the importance of repentance and our need for God’s mercy. It’s a good place to start as we begin our Lenten journey with the ashes of repentance on our foreheads.
St Catherine had great devotion to the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ, poured out on the Cross for love of us. For her, the blood of Christ is a visible sign of God’s great love for us. Here we hear a prayer first addressed to Christ, then an exhortation to address herself. She advises herself: ‘the more you see, the more you will love’.
We hear today a long prayer addressed by St Catherine to Mary, the Mother of God. She prayed this prayer on the feast of the Annunciation the year before she died, and in it she wonders about what it was like for Mary to say Yes to what God was asking of her. ‘You were overtaken by wonder and surprise’, Catherine says. She offers many original images for our Blessed Mother: she is the bearer of fire, the seedbed of the fruit, a peaceful sea, fertile soil, a new-sprung plant, and many more things besides!

We hear today one of the prayers of St Catherine, addressed to God the Father. She speaks of the human heart, made big by God, but that we can grow cruel if we fail to understand how much we are loved by God, in Christ.
The following talk was given by Br Damian Polly OP at a meeting of the Blessed John Paul II Theological Society at St Patrick's College, Maynooth. Br Damian was part of a panel from various religious orders - the others were a Benedictine monk, a Franciscan friar and a Carmelite nun. If you have ever wondered what makes up the Dominican mission and way of life, what makes us different from other orders and congregations, and whether there is such a thing as 'Dominican spirituality', this talk is a great place to begin.
The letter you are about to hear was written by St Catherine to another Catherine, Caterina de Scetto, also a Dominican laywoman. The letter highlights some of the potential pitfalls for those who consider themselves religious. It warns us not let our love be dependent on how it is received, but to generously reflect the unconditional love of God to the world. Catherine warns too not to judge other Christians whose ways are not pleasing to us. Instead, we should, as always for Catherine, ‘remain in the holy, gentle love of God’.
This reading is a selection of excerpts from the Dialogue of St Catherine. The Dialogue is Catherine’s great work, and it’s structured, as the title suggests, as a Dialogue between God the Father and Catherine herself. In these excerpts, we meet one of Catherine’s keys to understanding the work of Christ: he is like a bridge.
The reading that follows is an excerpt from St Catherine of Siena to her confessor, a Dominican friar, Bartolomeo Dominici. It highlights some of her classic images: God as a deep, peaceful sea, and God’s love as a fire.
St Catherine of Siena is one of the most remarkable women in history. She lived six hundred years ago, in Italy, and was born the twenty-third child in her family. She was born into an immensely turbulent time. The fourteenth century saw wars between cities, famine, and the horrific Black Death. And the Church too was in a parlous state, with corruption, luxury, and bribery common among the clergy.
At a young age, Catherine decided she wouldn’t marry, but would give her life to God as a Dominican ‘mantellata’ – these were laywomen who belonged to the Dominican Order and followed a rule of life. After joining the mantellate, Catherine spent three years living a life of almost complete solitude in the family home. She developed an immensely close relationship with Jesus during this time and she said she spoke with him ‘as one friend to another’. It was with great difficulty, then, that she left this life of solitude behind, but she knew that was God’s will for her. She initially protested against leaving her solitude, as she felt she would be leaving behind intimacy with Christ, but she heard Christ say to her: ‘I have no intention whatever of parting you from myself, but rather of making sure to bind you to me all the closer by the bond of your love for your neighbour... On two feet you must walk my way’. These two feet – love of God in prayer, and love of neighbour in action – were to give Catherine direction for the rest of her life.
She devoted herself to great acts of charity, especially with the sick who no-one would take care of because their symptoms were so repulsive. Later, she discerned that she was to act as peace-maker between feuding families and cities. She spoke truth to power with great authenticity, and she urged the Pope to return from Avignon in France, to Rome, his rightful seat. She devoted her life to the cause of peace and unity in Church and state, and to the reform of the Church, all based on an awareness of the God who is crazy in love with us.
For most of her life, she couldn’t write, but she has left behind a body of work through dictation. By this method, she wrote letters, prayers, and, her great work, the Dialogue. In this series we will read excerpts from all three of these sources. You will meet a passionate soul, big hearted, eloquent and and cheerful, despite the difficult circumstances of her time. In 1970, the Church recognised her witness to Truth when Pope Paul VI declared her a Doctor of the Church, that is, a teacher of the faith with lasting authority.

Perhaps the most successful in this regard is St Bernard of Clairvaux. He was a Cistercian monk and he had an enormous impact on the Europe of his day. Here, though, we see his tender side, as he addresses our blessed Mother. Appropriately for this stage of Advent, he turns to the moment when the Word became flesh, when Mary said Yes to what God was asking of her.

The last meeting of the St Saviour's Symposium for the academic year 2010/11 was addressed by Dr Catherine Kavanagh of the Department of Philosophy, Mary Immaculate College, Limerick. Dr Kavanagh studied at UCD and Notre Dame, and is an expert in the thought of the ninth-century Irishman Johannes Scottus Eriugena. In her lecture she spoke about his interest in synthesising the thought of Eastern and Western theologians in his work. It was a great honour to be present at such a detailed presentation of Eriugena's thought by such an erudite and polished lecturer.
On May 1, Pope Benedict beatified his predecessor, John Paul II. John Paul's legacy will be analysed by historians for years to come, but perhaps the best way we can honour his memory is to study and his teachings. With this in mind, the topic of this symposium is, 'The Conversion of the Baptised in the Thought of John Paul II'. Dr Carole Brown gave the lecture, based on her recent doctoral research. Dr Brown has been involved in many aspects of the 'New Evangelisation' in the US, Ireland and elsewhere. She was director of evangelistic outreach in Franciscan University, Steubenville and in more recent times has been an important figure in Youth 2000 Ireland, Kerygma Teams and Spirit Radio (www.spiritradio.ie).
