The second stage of Momentum - as we write about it in the book www.GetMomentum.com/book - is all about finding a mentor (or more than one) to help you navigate the next 60 months of your life and your work. In this episode, you'll learn… * Do you know the difference between a mentor and a coach? * There’s a HUGE announcement coming next month. * If you’re listening to this on 3/31, Jason’s giving his TEDx speech in Birmingham. * There’s a very good reason to think in terms of 5 years out. * You can achieve more, think bigger, and work smarter with a mentor!

If you want change, will you change?

What happens when you look for success? Every 2 weeks, we release another episode of the podcast. Here is number 212!

The 4th Stage of Momentum that we write about in the book Get Momentum is all about monitoring. You see, over years of working with extremely driven AND successful people, we know something about you: You’re rarely satisfied. That is, you achieve something - a goal, a project, an outcome - and you immediately move on to the next one. In this episode of the podcast, I want to share with you something important about how the brain works, how your colleagues get along, and what you can do to be a better version of yourself.

Whether you’re a leader, employee, entrepreneur or intern…the ideas in this podcast will help you. When you monitor - when you have a dashboard you can check in with - you make better decisions. And, you make those better decisions sooner!

In this episode, you'll learn… * Do you know how to engage people in/with what they’re doing? * When you know what you’re looking for, you can change earlier. * It’s possible to “hack” your brain to feel more engaged at work/in life. * What I did that changed the way students in my classes learned (in 1998). * There’s a challenge you can take, to be a better version of yourself!

Please do leave us a question, an idea, a prompt below, so we know what YOU think of this ‘cast.

**When it’s time to be at your best, listen in.

The intention is to get ideas you can use right away.**

Is the “Future You” looking forward to meeting you?

What can you see, when you see your future? Every 2 weeks we upload an episode of the podcast to the World Wide Web. Here’s episode 211!

The fifth stage of Momentum, we call: Modify. When I looked that word up in the dictionary, I knew how important it was to what you’re working on. Ready? Here’s the definition: “make partial or minor changes to (something), typically so as to improve it or to make it less extreme.” So, as you think about what YOU need to be doing differently, are you willing to make a “partial” change?

You see, one of the things we hear from people who think they’re interested in Get Momentum is that they don’t have time to commit to the program AND that they need to make changes in less than a year. Well, the Get Momentum Leadership Academy requires a minimum of 2 hours of study a month, and the program takes a year to complete. Does anyone else se the irony? It’s as if those big changes you need to have made a year from now will somehow just “magically appear.” I’m here to tell you, they won’t.

In this episode, you'll learn… * Is it really worth it to take a little step to make a big change? * To identify the things you KNOW you need to change. * How to regain up to 2 hours a day - every day. * What to DO with that saved time (Hint: Not the same old things!). * I have a challenge for you that could change your life!

Please do leave us a question, an idea, a prompt below, so we know what YOU think of this ‘cast.

**If you need to be at your best, you need this podcast.

I promise you’ll get ideas you can use right away.**

Think you don’t have meetings?

Do you talk, agree, and do things? So far this year, I’ve recorded an episode of the podcast every two weeks for you. Here is number 210!

Last month, Get Momentum members around the world spent 31 days studying how they prepare for, attend, lead and follow up with meetings. Over and over again, leaders wrote to Jodi and I saying things like, “I had NO idea just how many meetings I actually attend each week!” Here is what one member from Belgium wrote:

It's very funny: when I had my session with Jodi this month I told her that this module was not so related to my business and that I don't have the meetings that bigger companies have.

But she gave me a whole different perspective on the concept "meetings" and since then, I've been meeting with more people than ever, enjoying every one of them. What attracts me most in those informal meetings is the amount of information we exchange over a nice conversation in hip and energizing places.

Just to say that it has been a more than pleasant experience to set up "meetings" in New York City while I'm here.

In this episode, you'll learn… * Do you about the “Halfway Rule” and meetings? * That every meetings needs a PAL. * There is a better (and worse) time to start a meeting. * Trust is built at the transactional level. * You DO meet more than you think!

Please do leave us a question, an idea, a prompt below, so we know what YOU think of this ‘cast.

Are you waiting for permission before you start working on something important?

Are you hoping someone tells you how to do, what you want to do? Being effective and efficient…Is that interesting to you? Of course it is, why else would you listen to a podcast titled, Your Best Just Got Better? But, being productive…That’s not your end goal is it? You don’t want to just get things done, do you? No, there is greatness, there is power, there is contribution, there is LEGACY inside you that demands to be unleashed. Given away to your clients, your friends, your family, your lover. Don’t just hope you magically get there…Start seeing it. And, don’t just take my word for it...

"The mind is like a fertile garden," Bruce Lee said. "It will grow anything you wish to plant—beautiful flowers or weeds. And so it is with successful, healthy thoughts or with negative ones that will, like weeds, strangle and crowd the others. Do not allow negative thoughts to enter your mind for they are the weeds that strangle confidence.”

In this episode, you'll learn… * DO you know the elements of YOUR Ideal Days? * Practice does NOT make perfect. Never has. Never will. * You want to get comfortable? It takes being uncomfortable first. * You can script something that you’ve already seen. * You, your dreams and your accomplishments all matter more than you thought!

Oh, one last quote by Bruce Lee: "Knowing is not enough, you must apply. Willing is not enough, you must do."

Have you ever been ashamed of how much you have?

Do you play it on the “down-low” how much more you want? A teacher I’ve learned a LOT from was Peter Drucker. Mind you, I never met him. But, I am mentored by his Protege Ms. Frances Hesselbein. Recently, I read this quote he wrote: “Those who perform love what they’re doing.”

It’s my opinion that you weren’t put here on the planet to ever have time to “do nothing.” No, not for people like you and I. The whole reason you’d listen to a podcast called Your Best Just Got Better is, in fact, so you can figure out how to do MORE!

In this episode, you'll learn… * Do you know the BEST times to acknowledge someone for a job well done? * What “Wanting more” has to do with “Being more." * How to “extinguish” behavior you want someone to stop. * (Especially if that person is you!) * Finally, what to do about all the “More” you already have!

Is there a project you want to get started you keep putting off?

Are you frustrated that you STILL don’t have work-life balance? I read recently that Marisa Meyer is really making a statement about the intersection of work-life focus. Writing on her Tumblr, she said: “Since my pregnancy has been healthy and uncomplicated and since this is a unique time in Yahoo’s transformation, I plan to approach the pregnancy and delivery as I did with my son three years ago, taking limited time away and working throughout.”

Would you compare your ability to achieve work-life balance with someone who has a net worth of $380MM? Would you be able to do more, be more and have more if you made nearly $1MM a week?

I wouldn’t. In fact, if you REALLY want to stress yourself out, compare yourself - what you have, where you are, what you do, how you live - to someone who has different goals, different opportunities, and different realities than you. Stop trying to achieve work-life balance. Instead, get momentum on your most important things.

In this episode, you'll learn… * Do you know what Jason and Jodi are working on these days? * Motivation is out. Momentum is in. * There is one activity you can bring back to your team that will help them. * Momentum happens the MOMENT you’re engaged. * There are specific things you can do to Get Momentum starting now!

There is SO much research out there on communication styles and just how important it is to communicate clearly. What if instead of reading all the research, you simply read the listener.

In this episode, you will learn… * Do you know what university Jason is speaking at today? * Observing someone will make you a better communicator. * This is the second to the last podcast episode. * Yes, really! Almost 4 years of podcasts, and change is coming. * What one thing is the most important for us to share…Ready?

Please do leave us a question, an idea, a prompt below, so we know what YOU think of this ‘cast.

When was the last time you were wrong?

Really, how long has it been?Leaders are focused on getting things done; on getting things right; on getting the right things done. My mentor [I never met him, but he taught me SO much through his writing and recordings] Peter Drucker had just 5 questions he’d ask anyone he ever consulted. In between the lines - I think - he was asking questions to get people to think. He loved watching people consider options, weigh possibilities, and come up with thoughts they hadn’t had before. Listen in to this episode of the podcast for something so simple, and profound, you can start doing it tomorrow.

In this episode, you will learn… * Do you know how many days Jason dedicates to learning each year? * Some BIG changes are coming to the Podcast. Listen in. * Two managers said something important last week. * There’s one activity you can do to bring out the best in people. * The 200th episode of the podcast is coming soon!

Who inspires you to set goals?

Have you set the right goals lately?Just last weekend, I bought Jodi and I tickets to see the comedian Kathleen Madigan “do her thing” in Thousand Oaks, California. I’m tellin’ ya, for about an hour I laughed, and thought, and wondered…it was amazing to see her up there on stage. At one point, she talked about the “Oprah Influence” and how when people think of Oprah they immediately start to consider their goals, their dreams, their ideas for the future. Well, that got me thinking. So, in this week’s episode I’m going to share with you how (and why) I set visionary goals.

In this episode, you will learn… * Do you know how many people have reviewed Jason’s book on Amazon? More than 180! * When you join www.TimeToGetMomentum.com you receive 3 copies of Jason’s book. * An “Ideal Day” is not a perfect day; it’s not a once in a lifetime day. It IS a day coming toward you in the near future. * How the house that Jason grew up in wasn’t insulated, and didn’t have heating. * There are just 5 steps you need to take in order to write an ideal day!

Within the next few weeks, we’re going to reach a MILESTONE with the podcast. I’ll record episode #200 for you.

**If it’s time to set new goals, you will love this episode.

I promise!!**

What have you said “yes” to?

Could you manage your agreements better? Years ago, I earned a Master’s Degree in Psychology. For two years (it was one of those “executive ed” programs) I spent a weekend a month, and a week during the summer, studying the impact of the psyche on productivity. It was important to me that I completely understand the connection between “saying” and “doing.” Years later (published in 2010) I wrote a book with my dad on the topic!

In this episode, you will learn… * What special day it is today for GET MOMENTUM members * How close we are to celebrating podcast episode #200 * Two ways you can make - and keep - promises #Better * You can join GET MOMENTUM by visiting www.TimeToGetMomentum.com

Are you losing an opportunity to learn?

Did you know a complaint is the kindest thing they can give you? When it comes time to making your best a little bit better, where do you go to get the advice you need? Some leaders wait for their 360 reviews. Other leaders hope their teams/vendors/clients/managers give them feedback “just-in-time.” Still others are too busy in their day to day to even notice if/when things are off. Don’t be one of those leaders. Instead, actively pursue the complaints. In doing so, you gain an advantage.

In this episode, you will learn… * We’re on the countdown…8 more episodes until we celebrate 200! * Jason made a HUGE offer, but ya gotta listen to both this AND last week’s podcast * The fastest way to get from Point A to Point Z * What Jason learned as a high school teacher that changed the game. BIG TIME! * What you can learn by asking people to complain. (That’s the POINT of this episode!)

Are you committed?

Is winning a “nice to” or a “HAVE to”?I spent an hour on a video chat yesterday with a client I’m working with in Harare, Zimbabwe. Yes, you read that correctly… A book reader in Africa has invited us to create and facilitate a “Leadership Development Symposium” for three groups to come and study together. For the first 30 minutes we talked, we shared stories of our experiences: Linda has been “leading the community” for more than 30 years, and she discovered my book when a TED Speaker - Saki Mafundikwa - brought it to her after he and I met in Portland, Oregon last July!

This week’s podcast uncovers some of the secrets I’ve discovered over the years of studying high performance workplace performance. First of all “work” is a word we sometimes mis-understand. You see, some people think work is something they “go to” and “get paid for.” That’s not our definition. To us here at The Womack Companies, work is what we do because we see something that could be #better. (Yes, we DO use the hashtag before the word better…)

In this episode, you'll also learn… * What happens when you commit to something with your heart AND mind. * Jason has traveled to San Francisco and Marin County. * Jason’s passport is going to get stamped a LOT over the next 6 months. * Why “thinking” isn’t enough. You have to ___ __________ if you’re going to achieve more. * What you can do with a “REAL LIFE” situation to make progress on, and stress about less!

Are you a leader?

Would people follow you?Recently, an old colleague called me for a chat. About 10 minutes in to the conversation he said, “I’m thinking of joining Get Momentum, but I’m not sure that I’m a leader.” I had to pause. And think. I asked him, “Would you say that other people around you listen to your ideas and advice?” He said they did. I asked, “Do you follow up with people after you’ve met with them to check in on their progress [he works in personal finance].” He said he did. Well, let me be the one to tell you, there are THREE things great leaders do, and you’ll hear all about them in this podcast.

In this episode, you'll also learn… * One of Jason’s writing mentors gave him the BEST advice EVER! * The Leadership Skill of “delegation” will change you for the #Better. * What to do when you see someone “wandering in the dark". * The Get Momentum Leadership Retreat starts next week!. * It’s almost February! Are you smart?

As in, "the smartest person in the room?"It’s a fine line, the whole “I’m smart / you’re smart” thing. There’s a meeting you’re heading to, or a conference you’re attending, or even a phone call you’re going to take where you’ll be in a position to (1) learn something and (2) teach something. Ok, so maybe YOU wouldn’t call it teaching, let’s not get hung up on semantics; if you share something you know, and someone else didn’t know it, you could say they “learned something and you were in the vicinity.” In this episode, I’ll share with you what I think about people who declare they’re the smartest person in the room...

In this episode, you'll also learn… * Any idea how much time Jason has spent in Ojai this month? * There are two things you COULD do if you’re the smartest person in the room. * What Jason thinks when he’s surrounded by “really smart” people. * There’s a one-two punch to win at up-leveling your skills. * You can save $100 by registering for the Get Momentum Leadership Retreat!

What are you waiting for?

How is that working?Later… It'll never be here, I can promise you that. Really, it’s never going to be “later,” it’s ALWAYS right now. I remember when I learned that, and who I learned it from. A mentor of mine, his name is Steve, told me over lunch one day, “Jason, it’s always now. No matter what you think about, what you plan, what you hope for, you have to put things in the present tense. You already have everything you need. And, what you need later, you’ll have it.” You know who else would say that? Richard Branson! Here’s the quote of his that has taken the the Internet by storm lately,

"If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later!"In this episode, you'll also learn… * Why is Jason in Novato, California today? * Jason learned something important from his Grandpa. * The Get Momentum leadership retreat is around the corner. * You can think #Better about what you have to do... * After you read Chapter 5 of Jason’s book, schedule a meeting!

Are you visiting with family today?

Are you looking to make 2015 better? As you’ll hear in today’s episode, I almost DIDN’T publish one of these for you this week. You see, I know it’s a holiday and all. So, listen in to find out WHY I did get this done, and sent it to you.

Now, as you look toward next year, ask yourself, “Am I going to be better in 12 months?” If you answered that question with a “Yes,” I’ll ask you a follow-up question: “What is the ONE thing you know you need to be doing more of, or more consistently in order to be better in a year?” If I could give you a tactic, here’s what I’d say, “Write down what you just thought of. Put in on your computer monitor, or on the front of your notebook that is always with you. And, look at it EVERY SINGLE DAY. As I wrote in my book, you get better at what you focus on getting better at.

In this episode, you'll also learn… * Why Jason published a podcast episode the day he’s celebrating Christmas! * How to get TWO FREE months of Get Momentum coaching. * Why Jason thinks the Beatles (yes, the band!) would have loved the book. * What “Toyota” manufacturing has to do with “Leadership Development.” * Finally, this “could be” one of the last podcast episodes that Jason records for you!

Ok all, we LOVE reading your comments in the box below. So, click to rate the podcast, and leave your comments and questions in the blog post/show notes. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

What if you were more persistent?

What goal do you have to “Stick To”? Studying, working alongside, and coaching some of the most effective and successful entrepreneurs, athletes and managers in the world, I’ve learned a thing or two about persistence. In fact, while I was at the PopTech.org conference in Camden, Maine last October, I made this one of my “4th Questions” that I asked people. (If you don’t know what I mean when I say “4th question,” email me. I’ll send that section of my book to ya!) During the conversation with my new “friends,” I’d ask, “What goal do you have to Stick To in order to make happen in the next year or two?”

It was so cool. As people shared some of their deepest goals and biggest dreams, we stayed in what I call the “energy of the possible.” Over the past month, I’ve sent emails to three people, with ideas that I’ve continued to think about related to our conversation. Tell me, do you have someone on your team who’s continuing to think about your goals, even when you’re not? It’s kinda awesome to have those people on your team. I can speak from experience.

In this episode, you'll also learn… * How to surround yourself by and with people who will ask you BIG questions. * One of the BEST tactics Jason knows of to experience more success and achieve more goals. * There are three OTHER tactics you could be learning about this month. * A “dictionary definition” of the word, Perseverance. * Where Jason will be in the next week or so!

It’s “that time of the year.” I’ve made two different Spotify playlists for holiday music (one to play during the “in-between-times” during seminars this month, the other to play in my hotel room or office while I’m working!). Now, since I celebrate Christmas, I did write to Santa to ask him for the one thing I want this year…In case any of you know someone who works at Specialized Bikes, let them know Santa’s gonna come by to pick up my bicycle!

Ok, speaking of things going well, in this podcast episode I’m going to continue “pulling the curtain open” on the 4 things you can do this month to prepare for an even better 2015.

In this episode, you'll also learn… * Did you know you can email Jason any time??? * Three things that bring people down. * Where in the world is Jason? * The #1 tactic that Get Momentum members learn to “get better” every day. * What Confucius, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Paine, Peter Drucker and Jason Womack say about the absolute power (and necessity) of reflection.

If you leave a comment in the blog post/show notes, I’m going to see that and I’m going to comment … on your comment. Let’s get the discussion going!

Next month, the new year is here. If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself, and make that change…

Are the right people on your team?

If you know what drags you down, will you change? Twice in my professional career, I’ve had to leave jobs NOT because of the work, but because of the community I had become a part of. In 1999 and again in 2006 I realized that the power of the people was overwhelming my ability to do MY work here on the planet. That was when I started to research this sociological phenomenon I call “the people, not the work.”

In this episode, you will learn… * People leave people, they don’t necessarily quit the work. * There are just a few people you can talk to who are there to bring you down. * There is ONE thing you can do tomorrow morning that will RADICALLY change how good or how bad your day is. * Next year, Get Momentum members will learn 12 “Leadership Skills.” * What three other things Get Momentum members say they need to be better at.

Last month over at GetMomentum.co we addressed the topic of “Perseverance” and how effective leaders need to be able to go through the tough times…especially when they are tough.

As you look around your work and your world, pick one goal that you know you’d like to achieve, and clearly state what the experience will be when you get there.

I know of 4 productivity tactics that will give you the super-power you will need when the times get tough. However, you know me…and I’m only going to focus on ONE of these tactics each week. That way, you don’t feel overwhelmed, and you can test the information I share with you bit-by-bit…or, as my writing teacher Anne Lamott said, “Write that book bird-by-bird…”

Ok, so here are the four ways to persevere - again, I’m only going to talk to you about one a week…

This week’s tactic: Clarify your vision of what “There” looks like

The other three are:

Build a team of peers who support you

Reflect - daily - on your wins

Focus, Focus, Focus on what you’re about to do next

During the last “member’s-only” town hall at Get Momentum, we asked, “What gets in your way of achieving on your most important goals?” From around the world, they told us:

I have too many priorities

I’m too distracted at my desk

There are competing intentions from management

Does any of that sound familiar?

You see… I’m a student of leadership, and I look for the qualities in and of those around me who demonstrate leadership. I’m also a historian - so, I look to the past for anchors, examples of times past, that I can look to for advice and the occasional bit of inspiration… Here’s one from a long-time-ago American President, John Quincy Adams…

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”

Want to know how to persevere through tough times? I have a writing tactic for you and here it is…take out 4 note-sized cards, and on each one write down one of those “mores.” Here they are again:

Dream more

Learn more

Do more

Become more

Then, every day for the next 5 days add ONE item to each card representing where you see yourself - your vision - 36 months from now. On day 6 - if you do this 5 days in a row - call me, and we’ll talk about your vision and I’ll coach you with the one best tools I know of, to make a vision…a reality.

Here’s a quote by Lois McMaster Bujold

“Experience suggests it doesn’t matter so much how you got here, as what you do after you arrive.”

Isn’t it true that every now and then, a little luck is all you need. I know there are 2 things you can do to increase the likelihood good things will happen to you. Each one puts you in a better position to gain momentum and achieve your goals.

In this episode, I’ll tell you all about how to be in the right place at the right time

In the next episode of this series, I’ll tell you how important it is to get current; You’ve got to clean the slate because it’s hard to take on more when you’re already buried. Let me start with a story...

During the winter of 2012 someone told me: “You’re so lucky, you got a book published.”

I gotta tell you, it has stuck with me ever since. Whenever I work with a small business owner or a newly promoted manager, I think to myself, “How are they managing - and creating - their luck?”

So in this podcast I want to tell you step by step how I created this “lucky” experience.

And, it all starts from the cliche “ Be in the right place at the right time.” Take those two pieces of advice, one at a time...

RIGHT PLACE:

This means that you’re getting out, you’re putting yourself in a position to meet people, to see things, to do things. Here’s a question for you:

Where do you need to be, that will increase the likelihood good luck will happen? Click pause on the podcast, and answer that question. Here it is again: Where do you need to be, that will increase the likelihood good luck will happen?

RIGHT TIME:

You’ve heard the saying, “Timing is everything,” right? Well, here’s what I know - and trust:

Luck doesn’t happen EVERY time, but it could happen at ANY time...

Just a few weeks ago, in New York City, I met a woman in the elevator as we were traveling down to the lobby. Between the 7th floor and the 1st floor, we shared a conversation. As the doors opened, she said, “Do you have a copy I can buy right now?” Yup, my “elevator pitch” worked that day! Was I lucky? Nope… right place…right time.

Let me tell you the story of getting “lucky” and getting my book published.

On March 12th, 2011…

I was at a conference, it was rainy morning, and as I reviewed the conference schedule I saw a meeting titled, “From Blog to Book.” The breakout session was at a hotel a 1.2 mile walk away from where I was. So, I had a choice…

The easy thing would have been to choose a different breakout, and skip that one. I mean it was cold, rainy and windy outside…not a great day for a walk. But, as the saying goes, “You’ve got to play to win.” So walk I did.

At the end of the session I introduced myself to the three book publishers who were the panelists, and gave them my card. I had been writing a blog, I said, and now I wanted to write a book. They all smiled…one guy even said, “Good luck with that.”

An hour later I was back near the main conference center, about to cross a street when I looked up to see Matt, one of the publishers on the panel. So, I reintroduced myself, told him again about my plan to publish a book, and even said, “I’ve started a book proposal, can I send it to you?” He gave me his card - again - and said he’d take a look.

And that put me in to action. You see, over the previous 6 months, on again/off again, I’d been working on writing a book proposal. I’d even submitted a version of it to another publisher, and NEVER got a response. So, when Matt said he’d look it over, I knew I had to act fast…

I called Jodi, said I’d catch up later that evening, went to the hotel room, and worked for 4 hours straight to finish a version of the proposal I could send to Wiley Publishing. I clicked send, and met Jodi for dinner - That was March 12th.

On March 21st - I got a clarification email from Lauren, an editor at Wiley, asking me just a couple of questions. I received that email at 6pm while I was in Keene, New Hampshire. I changed my dinner plans and sent a revision of the proposal the next morning.

On April 4th, I opened my email inbox to see an email titled, “Welcome to Wiley.” I was in Chicago that afternoon, getting ready for a seminar the next day with a world-wide organization named, the “Institute for Management Studies.” Can you guess what I put in my introduction THAT morning?

For the next 4 months, I traveled to more than 20 cities, visited 4 countries, and presented 39 Leadership Workshops for Fortune 100 companies, universities and even a not-for-profit organization in New York City. Meanwhile, I wrote…and wrote…and wrote.

On August 24th of 2011, I submitted the Final Draft of the book, Your Best Just Got Better and on February 7th of 2012, my book was published. In less than 10 months I went from, Blog to Book.

And that…is how I got lucky…

Part one of this two part series comes out next Friday, September 26th! Subscribe here to make sure you don’t miss it!

When it comes to making good things happen, have you ever found yourself waiting…hoping for that little bit of luck you’ll need?

I gotta tell you, I love this quote by Ray Kroc, you know the guy who invented McDonalds...

“Luck is a dividend of sweat. The more you sweat, the luckier you get.”

So, in this episode of the podcast, you'll learn one of the two ways I know of to “step in to luck” a little more often. And, yes, by the way this is the SECOND in a series of two episodes…I recommend you try one of these for a week or two before you hold yourself accountable to the other way to “get lucky more."

Before I share this tactic, I will ask: Have you rated the podcast yet? Please, take a moment when you’re done and visit iTunes or Stitcher and leave your comments. If you do, email to let me know. I’ll send you something special - no matter HOW many stars you give! My email address is Jason@WomackCompany.com

So, if you want to get lucky more, you’ve got to put yourself in position to get lucky more.

I hope you weren’t expecting me to give you some new, profound, amazing tool. No, you’re probably sitting there (or walking, or driving) thinking, “Yeah, I gotta put myself in a position to get lucky more.”

But, the question is how? How do you do that?

I’m going to tell you WHY to do it, and then HOW. Look, by the end of today you’ll either have moved the mission forward…Or not. You’ll be closer to your goals…Or not. And, it’s going to take a lot - a lot of work, a lot of chance, a lot of luck, and a lot of effort to achieve some of those goals that you’re chasing.

In 2007, Jodi and I started our company. You may notice, when you visit the Web site www.WomackCompany.com that we did, indeed, name our company The Jason Womack Company. Look, it’s all we had back then. I mean, up until that point I was a high school teacher in Ojai, CA and a senior management consultant with David Allen and Company - you know, the guy who wrote the book called Getting Things Done for the 11 years before that.

Let me tell you how lucky we’ve gotten over the past few years:

Jodi and I started a company - a consulting firm, serving international and domestic clients, several of which are Fortune 100 companies.

I’ve been on stage at the same conference where speakers such as Les Brown, Dick Cheney, Benjamin Zander.

We have coordinated TED events in our home town of Ojai, CA.

I published my book - with a New York City publisher - within 11 months of meeting the Vice President of Wiley Publishing.

I’ve completed 5 half-ironman distance triathlons; and I’ve won a 5-miler running race in Homer, Alaska.

Now, you’re probably wondering, HOW did you do all of that Jason?

Well, first of all, I’ve just put a drop in to the bucket. I wanted to give you a sense of what happens when you DO what I’m about to teach you. But first, I have to ask:

How bad do you want it? I mean it? If you’re thinking that things are fine, that you really DON’T need to change, here’s my advice. Stop listening to this episode of the podcast.

I’m serious.

Press stop, and move right along.

Ok, you still here? That means you’re ready to take things up a level, so here’s my tactic - the one that I use EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. to get more lucky…

Do what you say you’re going to do…In the time you say you’re going to do it.

When you tell someone you’ll have something to them by Monday; do it.

When you tell someone you’ll get back to them, do it.

When you tell yourself you’ll do something, do it.

Here’s my challenge to you, if you’re ready.

Take out a blank piece of paper and on top write, “What have I said I was going to do…For who?”

Over the next 5 days, I want you to continue adding to that list. Even if you DO one of them, add it to the list. I want you to see what happens, in the space of just 120 hours, when you move through the day-to-day of life.

You say yes to a lot.

If luck is defined as success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one's own actions… I encourage you to put a bit more of that success in your own two hands. Get read to get lucky, do what you say you’re going to do.

Special guest, Geoff Welch also joins me to discuss this topic.

In this week’s episode, I discuss why teams go weird, why people go off course when working on a project, and lastly, I discuss some solid ideas about how you can enhance and build up your team over the next couple weeks.

One of the reasons that projects go weird is that there is an inability to see the world through someone else’s lens.

Also, what’s a rookie move in the workplace? Recognizing the flaws and what didn’t go right.

What about the veteran move? Looking around your world and recognizing that your mission is being moved forward.

What gives extremely successful people the right to do what it took to get them to the level that they’re at; turn around, and tell us not to do the things that got them to that level of success?

Look at people like Arianna Huffington, who tells the story about a time in her life when she was not getting enough sleep. There are many articles about it, including this one from The Atlantic (that I quote in the episode) and this TED Talk (by the way, are you looking for more TED Talks? Check this out).

Years down the road, when you think to yourself… where you want to be, what you want to have done, and where you’ll want to have gone; it might actually demand that you get MORE sleep, and you get LESS done. This means… to be as maximally productive as possible, you may need to get less done.

Do you want to know how to sleep better at night? You have to figure out what productivity means to you. What will success look, sound, and feel like to you?

After my niece and nephew visited a while back, I noticed there was a nice little note off to the lower, left-hand corner of the white board in my office. Every time I look at it, I get this feeling of gratitude. It makes me smile, and I also start to think about where my world can use the kind of presence and honesty that I see when I read her little note to us.

As you’re listening to this episode, bring to mind some of the people you’re connected to. Think about the folks you have worked with, people in your family, the community members that you come in to contact with as you go about your day-to-day life. Then, think about the ones you haven’t seen in a while and ask yourself, “Do I miss them?”

I’ll leave it to you to identify what you could do about that (if anything), but I will share with you a personal philosophy of mine:

We live in an acknowledgment-deprived society. There, I said it. I believe that if we could spend even a “little” bit of time each day where we pause and look back on the people who have helped us, the situations we’ve found ourselves in, the ideas for improvement that we see when we look out at the world…

if we did that, we just might find a place where we could place a feeling of gratitude. What if you expressed that, out loud, to the people you have connected with along the way, who you have not seen in a while? Think about how it might affect them if you paused long enough to let them know - in a genuine, giving, heartfelt way - how special they are.

One of our upcoming “Momentum Themes” over at www.GetMomentum.co is going to be Innovation.

It’s one of those topics that is taking over the medium to large-sized organizations I am working with these days. They are looking to be more creative with the products they offer, the services they provide, the training programs they schedule… just about everything is being touched by needing to be more imaginative and innovative.

In this episode, I want to share a couple of things I’ve learned about the creative process. You’ll notice as you’re listening that I DID record this podcast episode a bit ahead of time. You see, every now and again, being innovative means that you look forward and anticipate what’s coming, and get ready to experience that fully.

You are creating every day. You’re bringing to mind the good, the bad, and the ugly. Even if you think you’re NOT creative, you had to create…to think that. Really, when you look around and see, hear and feel what you experience. When you’re in a social situation, come to present. Really be “there,” right where you are, and notice what you can. You might look someone directly in the eye for an extra 10 seconds while you talk to them (easy to make eye contact when you’re LISTENING, harder when you’re talking; try it out), you might ignore a side conversation while you’re listening to the person in front of you, or you might resist the urge to jump in to a conversation and cut someone off.

Whatever it is, you can practice being present and you’ll start to think of things that you may not have thought of before.

So…I’d like to invite you to one of my FAVORITE “how-to-be-more-creative” activities of all time. In less than 3 minutes you can practice being creative. Oh, and you just might earn $5,000 within a few months. Ready?

How much time do you NEED?

Now, the real question I have for you: Is it even possible to get it? You’ve made choices, you’ve designed a life, you’ve attracted the kinds of things that you’ve got that “take” time. Recently, I was talking with a mom of a toddler (is that what you’d call a 2-year-old?) and she said, “I’m really looking forward to having a little more time in my day once he’s in school.”

Look, I’m not a dad, but I’ve been around enough families to know: There isn’t more time later. You have 7 days in a week. You’ve got 1,400 minutes in a day. If you waste just 15 minutes, you’ve lost 1% of your day. You know how easy it is to lose 15 minutes?

Go check Social Media for a while.

Wait for someone who’s running late.

Type with two fingers.

Procrastinate.

In this week’s podcast, you’ll identify ways that you can GAIN 1% - 2% of your time each day. But, you want to know a secret? Saving time is the easy part; knowing what to DO with that time…That’s an entirely new conversation. There really are a few things you can do, NOT to save time, but to know what to backfill that saved time with!

So, instead of blaming time, let’s look at what you can do to work a little bit smarter. In the ‘cast, you’ll get my one favorite tip to best figure out how to get a little more time starting tomorrow!

You’ve probably seen or read the title of my book, Your Best Just Got Better and what I find is that the best leaders are changing things by asking, “How could this be better?”

This month over at Get Momentum, we’ve been learning about productivity through technology.

Most people slog through their partly working systems, they put up with slow and inconsistent ways of doing things. In these cases, we need to look at the situation and figure out what’s going on. Consider your organizational system and where it’s supporting you.

And lastly, if this podcast has been useful for you, make sure that you subscribe in iTunes, and review us in the iTunes Store as well!

Over the past week, I’ve visited Portland, OR - Chicago, IL - Pittsburgh, PA - New York City, NY and now, Palm Springs, CA. I’ll be home later this afternoon.

In this podcast, you’ll learn 3 ways you can do better work. You see, I’ve met quite a few people over the past week at conferences and workshops, and there was a theme I looked for throughout several conversations.

You’ve heard of the #CoffeeChat events I put together, right? Please go to the web and visit: www.Coffee With Womack .com and you’ll see a listing of current and past #CoffeeChat meet ups around the world. Over the past week, I asked people to think of the big goal they are working on.

One of my favorite books is titled, “Do the Work.” In it, author Steven Pressfield outlines an easy-to-follow method of getting things done when you’ve decided to take on a larger-than-life project. The entire book comes down to one simple idea:

Do. The. Work.

Last weekend, I was at a conference in Portland, OR and at one of the dinner events, someone asked me about how I got the book published. It’s a great story, if you’re ever interested in hearing it. I talked about how I met the publisher at another conference, and within 11 months the book was published and on the bookshelves of major bookstores around the world. Within 18 months, it had been translated in to both Chinese and Russian.

Do, do I feel lucky? Yes…And no. I went and found this quote by a childhood hero of mine, Lucille Ball. She once said...

“Luck? I don't know anything about luck. I've never banked on it and I'm afraid of people who do. Luck to me is something else: Hard work - and realizing what is opportunity and what isn’t."

I’ve got three ways you can experience more “luck” in your work and in your life. Now, I put luck in quotes, because I trust that the more I do the work, the more good things will come my way.

But first, I want to share something special. Please write this address down where you can see it later:

www.WomackCompany.com/nmp You can register for an online class to learn how to get more done, easier, and faster. Let me share some of what I’ve learned about doing the work:

  1. Get really clear

Sometime today, write down the following dates: 2 days from now, 2 months from now, and 2 years from now. Then, next to each of those times, write the words: Clear. Visible. Blurry.

Now, what is clear to you about your future? What can you see with absolute certainty? What are you working on, have been working on, that you are certain will come to pass. Then, what can you see…Kinda? And, what is blurry? In order to achieve what you’re hoping to complete, you’re going to have to get much more clear about what you want.

  1. Ask for help early on in the process

The 5 people you spend the most time thinking about and talking to will either help you, or get in your way. One of the benefits Get Momentum members tell us all the time is that there is a global network of professionals who is right there to help them along the way. Recently, three Get Momentum members have gone through a 4-week accountability goal-achievement program together. All three said that they made more progress on a single goal that month than they had in the previous year!

  1. Be much more grateful every day

In the next 24 hours you’ll experience a lot. At work, in life, at play, you’ll have benefited from someone else’s time or energy or attention. Let them know you appreciate it, and watch what happens to your relationship...

The next Get Momentum Ojai Leadership Retreat is starting soon. As a member of Get Momentum, the next conference will cost you just $100. Imagine, 3 and a half days to focus on planning the following 12 months in a retreat-setting surrounded by 19 other people who have an absolutely clear focus on exceeding their goals in life and at work.

People are naturally very reactionary creatures with a narrow field of awareness (you can only hold so many priorities in your head at one time). This is why we respond to emails throughout the day when it’s easy to address a quick notification for something that can be easily done and checked off that list.

We are pushed and pulled by this constant barrage of information, so much so that we can’t process the bigger picture or ultimately the longer term goals that actually mean something. For example, when you write about the things you’ve learned and important progress you’ve made, sending an email never made it to that list.

The Get Momentum program helps you put this all into perspective. If you take the time to focus on something and use technology to help keep your field of awareness within the moment, there’s a lot of potential to actually be productive and make noticeable progression in your Most Important Things (MITs).

The most useful revelation for myself when following this advice is not some magical guide or handbook to solve all my problems, but rather a discipline and process flow to (metaphorically speaking) succeed:

Evaluate the journey. Look at what you’ve done, where you are, and where you want to go. Evaluating the journey has a lot to do with knowing your self-worth. What skills do you have to offer? What don’t you want to do? What have you learned?

Set the destination. If you’re trying to get to a constant state of happiness or level of success, you need to know at least the general direction you’re headed. It’s impossible to set a goal if you don’t even know your own values and mission statement.

Plan the path. Once you can visualize where you want to be, then be your own project manager and set those important milestones and checkpoints. Hold yourself accountable and plan out how long it will take to get there realistically.

Hello, and happy 4th of July! Hey, today is our 15th wedding anniversary…if you’ve got it in ya, both Jodi and I are on twitter!

Or, of course since this podcast is about how to send better email, you can email us as well or you can visit www.TimeToGetMomentum.com.

Before I share with you the 5 things every email you send has GOT to have, I’d like to share this quote first:

“Whether we're conscious of it or not, our work and personal lives are made up of daily rituals, including when we eat our meals, how we shower or groom, or how we approach our daily descent into the digital world of email communication.” Chip Conley

In this podcast, you'll learn about the 5 things I think about before I send an email. Now, to set the stage, I send about 30-50 emails a day. These are brand new emails, that I initiate. Every email I send goes through a 5 point checklist.

But, before I share the 5 tips, let me tell you how excited I am about this month’s Get Momentum theme. Over the next 4 weeks, I’m going to give members around the world the skills and tools they need to be more productive through technology. My promise: Each member will learn how to use their tools 50% more effectively. What would you do with an extra 5 or 10 hours a week? Want to join? Just visit us here.

When I’m emailing someone and I’m the initiator of the communication, I’m looking to OPEN the conversation. In doing so, I’m looking to make it as easy as possible for the recipient to IMMEDIATELY know at least 2 things:

  1. What is the email I am sending them about?

  2. What is the action I am asking them to take?

(There is more I may include, but those are the two most important things.)

  1. Is there any kind of due date?

  2. Is there a “way out” if they’re not interested in what I’m writing to them about?

The first thing people do when they receive a message is look at who sent the email. Based on their relationship to the sender, they’ll respond right away, sooner or later -- or never. Do you want to increase the likelihood that they’ll respond faster? You’ll do just that when you realize the power of the subject line.

Right now, open your SENT ITEMS in your email inbox. If you’re like most of the clients I meet with, you may notice that most subject lines are indeed a description of the email, focusing in on a noun or a phrase about a thing or things. But it can be more effective to include a verb near the start of the subject line. The most popular action words I’ve seen effectively used are the following:

Review

Confirm

Meet to discuss

After you maximize the Subject Line, next go to the body of the email. There are just a few “components” that I’m interested in looking for here:

  1. Salutation: keep it brief

  2. Body of the email: use bullet points, simple, short sentences and focus on action and/or information

  3. Conclusion: make it abundantly and clearly obvious what it is you’re asking for with a one-two sentence summary

  4. Signature: personally, I include my full name, phone number, mailing address and email address.

  5. Attachment: IF an attachment is included, I will ask the recipient to “please click reply to let me know you can open the attached doc.” This gets them to take an action, and let’s me know that they’re looking at what I sent them.

During this month’s Get Momentum module, I’m going to share some email software programs that I couldn’t work without. If you’re ready to be much, much more productive, join today. And, oh of course, if you’re listening to this podcast later, once you’re a member of Get Momentum you gain immediate access to all past modules. Jodi will tell you more about this at the end.

For a few moments, today, pause long enough to think of some of YOUR goals for improving and increasing your connections. I believe that you will be where you are 60 months from now…

Working where you work

Living where you live

Loving who you love

Experiencing what you experience

60 months from now you will have what you have based on the 5 or so people you connect the most with. So, starting today, think about those influential people in your life, and consider reaching out to them to reconnect.

In this podcast, let me share just a couple of my thoughts about the importance of sincerely connecting with those you work, live and love with. And, when it comes to making your best even better, any of these tactics will help you connect - and communicate - more clearly at work and in life next week (or, this weekend!).

Number 1: bring to mind someone influential in your life. Ok, I know that’s a big, heavy prompt. Instead, answer this question - a question I asked 120 business leaders in Mexico last Monday- “Who is someone in your life who asked you a question at some point in your career and that question made you really think?

Whether you call that person a coach or a mentor, there have been people in your life who you know have helped you a long the way. This month, Get Momentum members around the world spent about an hour thinking about how their network has influenced them in positive ways, and how to continue growing those meaningful relationships through time.

Number 2: how do you feel after you walk away from conversations with people?

I talked about this during some of my 1X1 coaching meetings with clients earlier this week. I remember when I lived in Mexico City a long time ago, I was impressed by the culture of “togetherness” and at the same time I was enamored with the honesty and frankness of conversations. At one point, during a long dialogue with a small group of leaders, I told a story about leadership and developing leaders.

No more than 2 minutes later, one of other people in the conversation referred to what I had mentioned, but he did so by “saying it more correctly.” In some of the translation that I did in my head, I had mixed up a few words and phrases. What was so amazing to me was that he was able to “correct” what I had said, but he did so without putting me in the spotlight or bringing a lot of attention to the error I had made. I walked away from that conversation feeling really good about the interaction with everyone.

And, at the end of EVERY conversation with someone ask yourself how you “feel” having spent time with them. My advice, spend more time with people who make you feel good while you’re talking with them. That way, your life will change…For the better.

“If you neglect to recharge a battery, it dies. And if you run full speed ahead without stopping for water, you lose momentum to finish the race.”

― Oprah Winfrey

So, quick question: How charged are your batters? And, one more: Do you have the momentum you need, to finish the race you’ve started? This week’s podcast will bring to light something that is sure to be of importance to your career AND your life. You have a chance to look at your connections.

This month, members of Get Momentum are spending time, energy and focus on building important connections to the people in their networks. So far, the effects have been outstanding. I have gotten emails and been on phone calls with members from Portland, Oregon to Harvey, Western Australia as the tell me that their life is getting better as the spend even a few minutes a day nurturing their networks.

In this podcast, you learn how I use my systems and tools, as well as hear about how I’ve built my own little meet-up system so that as I’m out and about I continue meeting new people, building uplifting relationships, and asking important questions to people I trust are willing to help me.

Think about it: What would YOUR life be like if you had this kind of network to turn to?

There are three things you can do immediately (and one that will take a little bit longer) to create a better, more expansive, more expressive life and career. In this week’s podcast, you’ll hear the tactics the most successful people use as they get from “where they are, to where they want to be.”

Now, it’s up to you - first and foremost - to identify your “There.” Where it is you’re marching toward? Once you identify that place, then it’s much easier to push the gas pedal and move in that direction. There are a few ways to identify your destination; I outline them for you in this podcast.

The last tip I’ll talk about, it’s one of the most important ones I can tell you about. Looking out into your future, just go 60 months. That’s a mere 5 years. And, if it seems like a long time, just look at your life 5 years ago! I did this recently (by reading through the journal that I kept that year) and realized that what I was experiencing then, the stressors and the wins, pale in comparison to what I’m engaged in now.

What does that most likely mean? The next 60 months will bring just as much newness and amazing opportunities my way. How about you? Are you ready?

Hiya. You know there is a secret to productivity you learned as a kid, and then for some reason you un-learned it. You let it go. You dropped it. Maybe it was 2nd grade. Maybe it was 12th grade. Maybe it was when you left your last job.

The super-skill to getting things done is: Don’t Wait.

Now, in this podcast I’m going to turn things upside down and then right side up. You’re going to have to listen to it, maybe twice, to figure out what it is that you can do about this secret. For now, let me give you one part of the secret to living a life that is better, more enjoyable, and provides a bigger/better impact to the world you live in. You ready?

Make a list today, for tomorrow.

Before you leave the desk, write TWO (yes, only two) things you’re going to work on before noon. Put these on a note card and tape it to your bathroom mirror. Write them on your hand. Call a friend, and ask them to text you mid-morning and at noon tomorrow. However you can create the accountability to DO what you said you’re going to do…Do it.

This is one of the best way to remove distractions from your life.

How fast are you moving? Are you making as much progress on your social AND your professional goals as you’d like? After I saw a movie recently called “Million Dollar Arm,” I realized the importance of running toward a dream.

During the month of May, 2014, the GetMomentum coaching community studied and practiced learning the professional skill of “Effective Communication.” So, in this week’s podcast, you’ll learn two ways to focus on important conversations, make the most positive impact you can on others around you, and end a day with less stress and feeling more accomplished. The goal of the Get Momentum methodology is to use the factors that help you get more done, easier, using high impact and leverage able activities you can repeat. Enjoy the cast!

In this podcast, I’m going to push on you to question just how you’re managing the “difficult and challenging” emails.

Listen in, you’re probably going to hear a tactic that you had thought of before, but might not be using enough these days. Oh, and at the end of this one, a special announcement for you.

What’s the biggest lie you remember someone telling you when you were young? Me…It was when someone put it into my mind that I could say “It’s not fair,” and that it would somehow excuse away whatever was going on. Sure there are negative things, there are hard things, there are challenging things that happen. But, when it comes to life being or not being fair, I think there is more to the puzzle than just words.

In this podcast, I’ll share with you something I learned while standing in line waiting to deposit a check with my uncle. Sure it was almost 30 years ago, and I’m continuing to tap in to the lesson behind the memory. I hope it helps you find your own version of my story, the time I can look back on that I learned that what you step in to is what you get.

Show up, do good work, and stay in touch. That’s a mantra I talk about in the book, Your Best Just Got Better. And, after you listen to this episode of the podcast, I hope you’ll look around and find a new place to “show up.”

Best wishes to you!

When did you first learn about the importance of “the way you talk to yourself?” In this podcast, I’ll share with you when I started learning about the conversations “upstairs,” and how after three decades on the planet I started communicating more effectively. The impact of learning about the power of communication has been huge. Professionally, I’m more successful now than I could have dreamed. Relationship wise, things are continuing to get bigger, more fun, more important, and more challenging. And, when I started studying the psychology of the “inner voices,” and looking at how leaders define themselves, their departments and their organizations not by WHAT they say out loud, but by what’s going on INSIDE as they let the words fly…

My life changed.

You see, I spend my life studying things things…so you don’t have to. My goal, the overall intention here, is to make it possible for you to be better and better by taking the activities, the ideas, and the insights you get from these

I read books. I attended workshops. I even studied for two years, earning a Master’s degree in psychology…All the while, studying Self Talk and performance. You want to try something amazing? Here it is: Next time you attend a meeting, I want you to look around at everyone there. From the time you sit down, until the end of the discussion, see if you can tell what they’re thinking. Not by just listening to what they’re saying, but by watching, observing, intuiting… Getting a sense of what’s going on “under their breath.”

If you’d like some help with this, here’s where I suggest you start: Pay attention to what YOU’RE saying to yourself! My guess is that if you’re telling yourself things like, “This is going to be a boring meeting. I wish I didn’t need to be here. I’ve got better things to do” … if you’re saying any of those things, chances are there is someone else who is saying something like that as well!

Potential…How do you define it?

And, how do you FIND it? If you’re over 40 years old listening to this podcast, you may have heard this as a kid, “You’re not working to your potential.” (If you’re not over 40, ask someone about “parent - teacher conferences” of the 1970s and 1980s. I believe all my teachers were taught to tell EVERY parent that their child wasn’t working to their potential!)

In this podcast, I’m going to share with you one of the most important activities you can do to:

Step One: Identify if you’re ready to reach your potential

Step Two: Collect the information you need to reach your potential

Step Three: Take the first step necessary to reach your full potential

In celebration of the 150th episode of the Your Best Just Got Better podcast, I’ve put together a special bonus course just for podcast listeners. Of course, some requirements apply; listen in, lean in, and achieve more!

When it comes to putting your focus where it “needs” to be, how do you do that? And, how can you do it better?

In this podcast, you’ll have the opportunity to look at and really question not just WHAT you focus on, but how you can FOCUS even better on what we call the MITs - the Most Important Things (in life, and at work). Before you click play, be sure to get a pen and a piece of paper, or open up a new document in your digital idea-storage system. I promise, you’ll have an idea in the next 3 minutes that will be worth your time.

As you are moving toward achieving your goals, make sure you’ve given yourself the gift of your own attention. This can be in thinking, planning or even working on a specific goal, something that if you finished by the end of next month would have a significant, positive impact on your life, and/or the lives of others. As always, I wish you the best.

If you’re on a path to make your best even a little bit better, there are many things you could do…differently.

In this week’s podcast, I’ll share three things I learned while I was a guest at the Four Seasons in Jimbaran Bay, Bali, Indonesia.

Are you ready?

1. Anticipate their needs. If you’re in the service industry. If you’re a manager. If you’re a community leader… Of, essentially if you’re at all involved in your world (!!!) I’ll challenge you to walk out in it and ask yourself, “How can I help them today to be at their best?” Of course this is a big question; it demands you put yourself second.

This is something I saw first-hand over and over again while I was here at the Four Seasons. It feels as if the staff here has a single task: to make it easy for us guests to do whatever it is we seemed to want to do…better.

Imagine my surprise when we checked in, and were welcomed with refrigerated hand-towels, cooled and sprayed with mint water. I mean, c’mon, really? It was incredible. Or, when we arrived at the pool on our third day here (the first day was a work day, the second a recovery day, the 3rd through 8th days were relaxing and working days…more on that later) and as we were about to sit down one of the staff members approached me, reached out his hand and said, “Welcome to the Four Seasons pool. May I clean your sunglasses?”

All I could do was nod my head up and down. (And, then my mind went crazy with thoughts… What if the flight attendant asked to clean my computer monitor. What if the barista asked to sit with my computer while I stepped away for a moment. What if… What can you imagine doing for the people around you that would make it easier for them to do what they’re about to do, better?)

2. Leave things clean(er). Ok, so pretty much anywhere you look, there is a flowering tree. And, pretty much any time of the day there is a slight breeze. So, pretty much all day long there are plumeria flowers on the ground. Yes, everywhere. So, every morning that I’ve been here I’ve adopted a routine (tomorrow will be day 8, as long as my body cooperates). I wake up around 4am. I kiss Jodi hello (she immediately turns over and goes back to sleep!) and then I head outside. There, in the small yard of our private villa is a “plunge pool.” It’s about 3 meters by 2 meters big, and there is a fountain dropping a continual stream of water in… And, that is where you’ll find me from about 4:15am until about 4:45am…

So, every morning, at about 4:30 or so, I can see over my fence there is a staff member walking up and down the pathway, picking up individual plumeria flowers. One by one. So, the second morning I was here, I did a quick check. And, it turns out that they do use some of them in certain arrangements. Mostly, the two young girls who are sometimes in front of the lobby make small flower arrangements for arriving guests.

3. Celebrate the ordinary. The first day of our trip was the day I presented a 4 hour workshop on executive presence and situational leadership. Of course, in just 4 hours I could just touch on some of the topics that I’ve written and studied about over the past two decades, so I decided to focus in on three things I wanted to make sure to present effectively and efficiently. At the conclusion of that presentation, Jodi and I were invited to participate in a “volunteering event” at a local school for deaf children.

On the bus ride from the Four Seasons to the school, I found myself reflecting on the “everyday-ness” that was around me. Families commuting through town, stores open with merchandise showing to the passersby on the street, an occasional ambulance or police car traveling one direction or the other. The more I thought about it, I realized that everyone around us was doing their day. In that moment, I let go of the feeling of “uniqueness” or “specialness,” and simply stepped in to being a part of the process of a day. We arrived at the school, and over the next hour or so were given a treat that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

I promise you, Jodi and I know we are blessed, we are fortunate, and we work really, really hard for all that we are given to take care of; that’s why we do what we do. Along the way, I’m so happy that we are also handed the experiences that we can use to look at the world anew, to see what else we can see, and learn from any experience, any time, any where.

Greetings from Bali, Indonesia. This week’s podcast is an especially near and dear one to our hearts; for, without what you’ll learn about in this podcast, I do not think we would be where we are: personally or professionally.

The point of this cast is to get you thinking about the people you’re spending the most time with. The family members, the co workers, the community members, the friends; each and every person who influences you in some way or another. Sometimes positively and sometimes in negative ways. If you’d like to run a check to see how well you’re doing, just take a look at the last week.

Who did you talk to that pushed you forward? Who did you talk to that drug you backward. Who did you talk to that gave you energy? You get it…These are the kinds of questions to ask yourself so that you can begin shifting - in ever so subtle ways - who you spend time with and what you will get from that time.

I hope you’ll listen to this podcast, and give yourself the gift of your own attention. You’ll be better off 60 months from now if you start to work on the process I outline for you here.

My father in law is consistent in reminding me that “we have our health.” And, if you listened to podcast number 145, I talked about someone in my family whose health is compromised right now; as I record this, his life is still on the line. My ask of each and every one of you is this:

Please take your health seriously. Be safe out there. Do things you know you should be doing, and learn things you could be learning. You’ve got this life to live, and we need you around, healthy and happy for a long, long time.

To start and then continue this process of being more and more healthy, there are a couple of things I’m going to ask you to consider:

  1. Get a check up

  2. Drink a little more water today than you did yesterday

  3. For the next 5 days, pick a time of the day when you can leave in the MIDDLE of the day and go for a 15 minute walk. 7 and a half minutes out, and 7 and a half minutes back.

I learned about the focus on health and wellness by reading a lot of the history and biography of the martial artist Bruce Lee. One of his areas of focus was to focus on training so that you can spring back strong, and adapt harmoniously without striving hard…Or resisting. In this podcast I’ll share three things you can do to be more healthy tomorrow. Ready?

You need to have numbers.

You need to know what you’re comparing yourself to. I don’t want you to “WONDER” if you’re in or out of shape. Instead, I encourage you to start collecting information that has value. Information that tells you something. Information you can use to compare yourself through time. What can you measure? Here are just a couple of things:

Body Weight

Percent of Body fat

Glasses of water you drink every day

Desserts you eat throughout the week

Minutes of exercise you engage in weekly

…and, I’m sure there is more, but that’s not the point.

Let me reiterate: The point of this is not to become some kind of a “number-crunching-health-fanatic.” No, the purpose of this is to give you something to respond to; having numbers out there may just give you the push or encouragement you need to start gaining momentum on these kinds of goals. Years ago while I was reading a book about Chinese Gung Fu, I wrote this statement in the margin (I’m reading from that page right now): “Not a response IS a response.”

I am not totally sure, but I think it's possible that some people you know may have made it through this entire day without having someone say thank you to them. Maybe, as you've been going through your day you have passed up an opportunity to look someone in the eye, pause take a deep breath in, and let them know how grateful you are. I know, I know, you are busy. As we all are.

There is a very simple way you can not only find, but make, time to say thank you to the people who most deserve it. Now, I wonder if you are already thinking, “Jason, people here think you all the time. I see how people are living in a very acknowledgment rich culture.”

What I am here to say, east on many years of experiential research, is when I acknowledge someone from a point of human connection, there is something different that happens to and with our relationship. In this week's podcast I outline one activity you can do immediately to test your level of gratitude. How do you score out of 100 points on the chart of gratitude?

At the end of the podcast I give you a very specific, step by step way of writing a hand written thank you card. I have been writing handwritten thank you cards almost every day for more than a decade. In fact, as I’m writing this post this week, on my desk are four addressed thank you cards simply waiting for the five or seven minutes it will take to write each one.

Now, in the middle of this podcast I share a personal story of something that my family is enduring right now. As you listen, I encourage you to also take a moment, bring someone you love to mind, and let yourself feel that connection you have two them. Wherever you are, and whatever you are about to do next, as always I wish you the very best.

When it comes time to follow your dreams, to achieve your goals, to reach your potential, what is the tactic you use to get there?

A few years ago, I committed to connecting “seemingly” disconnected things in new (and hopefully useful) ways. One of the ways I do this is by asking people questions. Sometimes serious, sometimes light, ALWAYS interesting to me…the purpose of the questions I ask is to bring the person I’m talking to back to the present.

Sure, sometimes the questions go back in the past; but, the purpose of asking them is to set the stage for a conversation that is wrapped around what is CURRENTLY going on. For example, many years ago I started asking parents, “Why did you have children?” Well, I’ve heard a few answers (there really aren’t that many unique ones) and it often leads to a larger discussion of all kinds of topics.

But you know what? There is ONE answer I’ve NEVER heard parents give. And, the interesting thing is that for SOME parents, it’s the most important thing - and most time-consuming thing - they worry about right now for their children…If you’re interested in that email me, we’ll talk!

In this week’s podcast, I actually tell you how you can get lost and then BE FOUND. Sure, it’s going to take a little work (and, about an hour or so) but I promise it’s worth it. Oh, and listen all the way to the end of the ‘cast…I make a great offer for you there!

In last week’s podcast, I asked you, “Who taught you how to argue?” (Here’s the link to Podcast #141 http://womackcompany.com/blog/2014/02/28/episode-141-need-know-hard-day).

If you listened to that one, you heard about that crazy travel day I experienced last week. When my flight was delayed, and then canceled, the airline kept my reservation but I realized that I didn’t have a seat on a plane. Finally, we worked it out…And that’s when I realized the power of what I’ll talk about this week:

Don’t Wait.

While I was working with several clients here in New York City this week, we talked in our one-on-one coaching sessions about 2 specific topics: Focus and Procrastination. You know what’s incredible? The more senior people are, the more they need to focus on their priorities. So, when I’m working with a 10, 15 or even 20 year veteran in an industry, I always bring up this topic of distraction and focus.

If you know you’ve been putting something off, do something - anything - to start up (again). Listen to this short podcast for a couple of ideas you can use right away to get something important done.

Who taught you how to argue?

Really? When did you learn how to disagree with someone? How do you deal with a situation that’s not going your way? These are questions I thought of after I ended my day last Wednesday. In this podcast, I’ll share a few ideas you can use from a situation I experienced recently. If it helps you make it through that next “tough event,” will you let me know?

So, last Wednesday was a travel day. Up at 4:45am to get to the Detroit airport so that I could fly to Dallas, hang out for an hour, and then fly on to San Francisco so I could speak at this event on Thursday. Well, the first part of the day went well, and then it got challenging, hard and surprising over the subsequent few hours.

As you listen to this week’s podcast, I hope you’ll think of your own recent example of when things were challenging. Then, see if you come up with a few ideas on how you could respond differently something like this happens. I hope that you get an idea or two that you can use right away…At work, and in life.

Every time you are interrupted or distracted, the energy you were building from moving your project forward is halted, and you need to start over. Too many times, you need to gather new strength to pick up where you left off, and you may waste valuable minutes trying to figure out exactly where that was.

Are Distractions Getting In Your Way?

Have you noticed that many times when you are focusing on your work and are approaching that momentum where things start to flow easily, you get interrupted?

“The average American worker has fifty interruptions a day, of which seventy percent have nothing to do with work."

W. Edwards Deming American statistician, professor, author, lecturer, consultant and all-round business brain, born in 1900.

Now, he was writing about interruptions and distractions throughout the 1960s through the 1980s. Do you know what that number is today? Nearly triple that of what Mr. Deming found in his consulting work…

In this podcast, I will teach you 2 ways you can not just avoid distractions, but possibly even use them to your advantage.

  1. Science continues to prove what our intuition knows: Interruptions do impact productivity. However, there may be a positive or negative impact to your productivity. According to University of California, Irvine researcher Dr. Gloria Mark, there may be a difference between the different kinds of distractions or interruptions. Interruptions that add to the task at hand make us more productive. Alternatively, interruptions on topics different from what we’re working on force us to change our work rhythms, strategies and even mental states.

  2. Interrupt other people first. Before starting a work session, think of the people that might interrupt you -- it may be a team member, a client or even a manager -- and interrupt them first. You can use the time before your focus period to get in contact with them and anticipate anything they may need from you. You should also mention that you will be unavailable during the next 45 minutes because you will focus on a specific piece of work that needs to get done.

Set your timer for 45 minutes, and leave your desk; go to a place where you can be alone. It can be a different office or conference room or even the nearby coffee shop. By getting away from your desk, you will not be available for phone calls or to check your emails.

BONUS: Ok, I know I said I’d give you two tips, but I’ve got one more that I have to share with you. Here it is:

  1. Make a list today, for tomorrow. I want you to write down TWO (yes, only two) things you’re going to work on before noon tomorrow (even if tomorrow is a weekend day, or a holiday!). Put these on a note card and tape it to your bathroom mirror. Write them on your hand. Call a friend, and ask them to text you mid-morning and at noon tomorrow. However you can create the accountability to DO what you said you’re going to do…Do it.

I promise, if you pick two things you’re going to do by 12pm tomorrow, and you look at them through the rest of today, and tomorrow morning, you’re going to HAVE to make at least some progress on them. And, as I have thought for years, a little progress every day is about as equal to waiting until the last minute and doing it anyway!

Thank you for listening to this week’s podcast. Hey, I have an offer for one listener… Jump over to http://GetMomentum.co/podcast and sign up for the Bonus Course I posted for you there. THEN, after you register, send me an email letting me know how YOU found out about the podcast. I’m going to choose one listener and send you a surprise gift in the mail… You ready for this?

As you listen to this episode of the Your Best Just Got Better podcast, I hope you will take time and really consider all the different aspects of how limitations may actually help you be more productive. At the beginning of the podcast you will hear me talking about a very influential book in my bookcase, it is called Tuesdays with Morrie. And it is an amazing example of how by having known limitations it was actually possible for the author, Mitch album, to have an income relatively rich connected experience.

Now, I’m not going to go into detail in this blog post about that book, however, it may be worth it for you after you listen to the podcast to consider picking up at least an online version of that book.

In this podcast, you'll learn how to use limitations to get ahead. For a few moments, consider the kinds of things you KNOW you have in limited supply:

Resources

Money

Time

Just over a week ago, I posted a Discussion Prompt for the global community of GET MOMENTUM members to consider. For several days we discussed this topic of limitations and productivity.

As your coach, I’d like for you to consider the impact - both positive AND negative of these kinds of guidelines/groundrules/limitations.

Now, the results of the poll I posted on our discussion forum indicate that people are split…about 50/50. Almost half all members say that constraints can actually limit productivity, while others say that these very limits - some call them guidelines or boundaries - create the conditions for freedom and creativity.

Now, I want to share with you what I do to make it work to my advantage. I’ll do this by giving you an example, and then detailing exactly what I do to make it work for me:

  1. Since my wife and I work together - we’ve run the Womack Companies for more than 7 years - we only get a few blocks of time together each day to really be with each other. There are days, in fact where from morning till night we’re both super-engaged in what we’re doing; it’s up to each one of us to make time to connect on the being level each day. So, we do this thing where when one of us returns (she from running errands in town, me from going out for a run, or some such thing), the one who has been home walks outside to celebrate the return! So, I’ll hear Jodi’s car pull in to the driveway, and that’s my cue: Zuma (our black lab) and I walk outside and welcome Jodi home.

  2. Articles, podcasts, interviews…each one has a deadline, a time when it’s due or else! So, once I find out when a client would like something, I write it on my calendar to be due 24 hours EARLY. I don’t do this so I can let the reminder float those 24 hours; no, I actually turn whatever it was that was due in early; with a note. I ask, “Will you please look this over/read this/watch this/listen to this, and let me know first thing tomorrow if there is Anything I can add to make it better for you. Wanna know something? It’s about 5 times out of 10 that they DO get back to me with some positive feedback. I edit/add to it, and voila, it gets better!

If you are facing some limitations today or this week, here are the steps I recommend you take:

  1. Acknowledge the limitation.

  2. Ask yourself, “How can I be as or more productive even though I’m limited?”

  3. Break the “thing” (the project, the task, the issue) in to a 15 minute activity.

  4. Actually set a timer, and work on THAT thing for just 15 minutes. (Email me and I’ll send you my favorite countdown timer.)

  5. At the end of the day, look back and acknowledge exactly where you DID make progress. I promise you’ll have SOMETHING come to mind...

I mentioned that this was a discussion we had over about a week in the GET MOMENTUM global discussion forum. If you have anything you’d like to talk about when it comes to this topic of constants, productivity, time management and professional performance, let me know…I’d love to chat by phone or email!

A dear friend of ours just moved away from Ojai, and on a run we took together along the river here in Ojai a week ago, I asked, "How do you achieve on important goals?" Over the next 5 miles, we circled around that topic. One of the comments that I remember from the conversation was, "Is the goal believable?"

It got me thinking; I mean, what exactly does believable mean? You see, in this week's GET MOMENTUM Ojai Winter Leadership Retreat (getmomentum.co/retreat) we are talking about a very important aspect of human performance and professional productivity: Expanding the comfort zone.

Are you going to watch any of the Olympics starting today? If so, you will see athlete after athlete who has spent a lifetime expanding their comfort zone. Fortunately for us, we can do this to a lesser degree than the physical effort they all put in; we can do it with our minds and step in to bigger visions of ourselves, achieving bigger and more important goals. In today's podcast, you'll learn THREE ways to achieve on your important results.

  1. Suspend Belief

  2. Act As If

  3. Ask, "How could this happen?"

I talk about a book I read (and have since re-read and talked about in almost every seminar) called, "Don't Shoot the Dog." (See page two of these recommendations: bookswerecommend.com). The entire book is about how to shape/guide behavior so that more of what you want to have happen…happens. The quote I read in this podcast is one that has stuck with me since I was a high school teacher in 1997!

After you listen to the podcast, please do jump on over here and give it a rating. The Apple iTunes store recently put the Your Best Just Got Better podcast up on their home page. Please help us keep it there by giving it a rating and review! Thanks in advance.

You’ve got time to do this, ready?

Breathe in…Extremely deeply, and then breathe out. Next, do it again. Now, on that second “out breath” ask yourself this question: “What are my priorities for the rest of today?”

Careful now, don’t ask yourself what “are all the things” you have to get done; I’m talking the 2 (or maybe 3) things that you know absolutely need your attention. You see, the brain is an amazing computer, once it finds something out of place - in this case, something unfinished - it has to go to work seeking closure. People talk about setting goals all the time; they rarely talk about WHY setting goals is important.

Over the past couple of decades that we’ve been in the lab, studying the human mind, biological genetics and pre-dispositions, and physical activity, we’ve uncovered some very important facts. Having studied psychology and the impact of the mind on human performance, it is apparent to me that there are six areas to focus on if we’re going to grow physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. They are: Observe, Describe, Explain, Predict, Change, Assess.

Today’s podcast is all about that first one…Observe.

You see, someone is driving your attention. Sure you could say it’s someTHING; but, that something came from someONE. I like to remind myself that the ultimate arbiter of the information I read in a book, a study or a magazine was the EDITOR of said publication. There is ultimately ONE person who decides what makes it…And what doesn’t. So, as you listen to the podcast this week, ask yourself: “Who is that person editing incoming information and filtering what comes into my awareness in the first place?

Oh, and listen in to this episode for one of the most significant activities I know of to help you prioritize effectively, and get more done.

You know it’s time to believe what you’ve heard before; in this podcast, I am going to make the case that if you’re going to do make your best better, you’ll actually have to do the OPPOSITE of what Nike says. Yes, you’re going to have to…

Just Stop It

What would happen to you if you spent 31 days studying just one leadership theme… Such as “Success”?

Well, this month, GET MOMENTUM members from around the world are studying exactly what that word means to them. If you know that you’re on track to have a bigger, better and more successful year, but need to know the skills, tools and tactics how to get there, visit www. GET MOMENTUM .co today. You’ll be glad you did.

Here is another one of my favorite quotes about success: This one is by Bruce Lee - "Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it."

I’m recording this podcast for you here in Northern California. I’m actually looking to buy a new electric car while I’m working here in the Silicon Valley, and I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what I want to say in this podcast.

Have you already found yourself promising to do more and more as you continue to seek this ever-elusive end point called “success?” Take a look at your calendar for the past week and identify the times that you put yourself second so you could make sure to do something…For someone else.

Look, I know it was important to get that thing done. You made the meeting, finished the project, took that trip…It was good. Things happened; your boss - or your client - was happy. But what about the promises you’ve made to yourself? Did you want to take on habits like exercising more, or starting to be more mindful, or even spend 30 or so fewer minutes at the office every day?

View Details

Do you know what success would look like? Do yourself a huge favor, and spend 15 minutes today (before you fall asleep tonight) writing down goals, ideas, milestones and outcomes for you, your life and your career. The time span on this doesn’t matter; it could be for this week, this month, this job, or this lifetime. After you spend 15 minutes thinking about this, listen to the podcast one more time.

Be different, see different.

There are two things you need to do, if you want to experience more “Success.” And, no, I’m not going to serve up the obvious one. You know what most people say, right? I can’t tell you HOW many beginning life coaches, mentors or even friends I’ve talked to who say, “Jason, I need to be more clear with my goals. Will you help with a goal-setting, strategy session?"

Did you know that researchers at Harvard Business School have actually proven that simply identifying - no matter HOW clearly you do it - a goal is NOT the most important thing to do to achieve more. I found a couple of pieces of research on this, and have been reading up on it over the past year or so. In fact, later in this year in the GET MOMENTUM coaching program, we’re going to study for an entire month this aspect of Better Goal Setting. I’ve seen too many professionals ruin their careers by setting the wrong goals.

Here are the two things I look for - and generally find - every day. Sure, I have a general direction I’m heading in, but I’m smart enough (or is that I’m old enough?) to know this: Between now and then…Things will change. Over the past two decades of studying leadership, self talk and productivity, I continue to find examples of how the goal people originally set out to experience is affected by both space and time.

Ok, so here are the two things I look for every day, you want to write them down?

  1. I look to see other people having fun.

  2. I look to see a place to do things differently.

All right, in this episode of the podcast, I talk just a little bit about each one of those things I look for.

View Details

This January, I’m talking about the theme of SUCCESS. Yes, all 5 weekly podcasts will give you insight and ideas on how you can work smarter, think bigger, and achieve more. Meanwhile, GET MOMENTUM members all over the world study one theme each month; I’d like to share a way that I end each day in a way that celebrates what got done, and helps me look forward to tomorrow. This just may lead you to greater success in life, and at work.

As you listen to the podcast, take special note of the three quotes I left for you:

J Paul Getty said, "Formula for success: rise early, work hard, strike oil."

I love this one by Jonathan Winters, "I couldn't wait for success, so I went ahead without it."

And, how about this from Dr. Bill Cosby, "I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.”

If you let yourself count things, the right things, you’ll know what kind of progress you’re making. Create some kind of an “end of the day” ritual where you do get to write down the kinds of things you did that day, the ones that moved you forward…And the ones that caused a pause. As you go through this activity, focus on the progress you’re making. Building a mindset of abundance is critical to experiencing a life - and a career - of momentum. Welcome to the club!

This month's theme - and therefore all 5 weekly podcasts - is SUCCESS. You see, GET MOMENTUM members around the world are studying this topic, and here I’ll share a few ideas I have about how to ask better questions that will lead you to greater success in life, and at work.

In the beginning of the cast, I talk about reading a book by a friend of mine, Dan Waldschmidt.

Asking the right questions is a mindset-based approach to improvement. It starts with a foundation - a belief, really - that improvement is possible, that making things better is not just a “pie-in-the-sky” dream, but something that you can do. Instead of staying in a reactive frame of mind (something that many podcast listeners and blog readers admitted to me at the end of last year) you’re now in a position to pro-act, thinking about the next few months one week at a time.

When it’s your turn to achieve success, use the “better” questions that I talk about in this podcast. Oh, and if you listen until the very end so that you can take advantage of a special report I’m sharing with Podcast listeners for a limited time only.

With only a few days left in 2013, I share two ways that can help you to celebrate better. Throughout the year, we reflect and we dream…however, we especially do these things during this time of year.

A favorite quote from a teacher of mine, Anne Lamott (in her book, Bird by Bird) is, “You get your confidence and intuition back by trusting yourself, by being militantly on your own side. You need to trust yourself, especially on a first draft, where amid the anxiety and self-doubt, there should be a real sense of your imagination and your memories walking and woolgathering, tramping the hills, romping all over the place. Trust them. Don't look at your feet to see if you are doing it right. Just dance.”

Why would you set a goal? Why would you talk to someone about your vision of the future? Ultimately, we do all these things because there is an end goal in mind.

Step one in getting more - more of whatever it is you'd like to have - is to know what what that is. And, I'm not the only one who thinks so! Recently, I saw a campaign via Connect: Professional Women's Network, Powered by Citibank where they provided this prompt: "Finish This Statement...As a woman I'd like to_______ more."

How many things came to your mind? As a man, as a friend, as a partner, as a colleague, as a teenager, as a retiree (we've you ALL listening in to this podcast each week!). Wanting more of something that brings you joy, challenges you, or makes the world a better place is not negative; in fact, wanting more is the first step you need to take if you're going to get more. Enjoy this podcast, and…give yourself the gift of your own attention by writing down what it is you'd like to make more of!

How clear is your vision - of what you want, of what you have, of where you are going? In this week's podcast, I am going to encourage you to do a little more work this week to CLEARLY identify where you are going. It's an important aspect to incorporate in to your planning, your development, your routines. By the way, if building new routines is something that you're looking to work on next year, let me know…I have some ideas on that.

When it comes to the results you're experiencing, it's easies to think in terms of past performance. A mentor of mine - Marshall Goldsmith - continues to remind me how important habits are to our productivity AND our lack of success. I wrote in my journal years ago that "habits are things that used to work." By that I mean that what I used to do, that got me here to where I am today. If I'm going to get anywhere other than where I am…might be time for a new routine! If you know that next year is going to be a more productive one for you, here are some ideas you can use right away: http://www.jasonwomackblog.com/working_outwhile_youre_ou/2011/05/3-habits-to-a-more-productive-year.html

If there was just one secret to effective project management, when would you want to know what it is? I believe there is one skill that you can improve on that will - no doubt - make it easier to manage any project you are involved in - in life, at home, or at work. As you move in to the next week, ask yourself, "Who do I need to follow up with?" and then, if possible, send out any notes/emails/phone calls you can to connect with those people.

An easy way to move the mission forward is to identify where you are going, what resources you need to get there, and take actions - step by step - to make your way toward completion. If you'd like to read about three more ideas you can use right away, here's a blog post from a while back you'll enjoy:
