Lindy also highlights major investments in local capability, including Suntory’s four hundred million dollar Swanbank beverage hub, new high–speed canning lines, Ego Pharmaceuticals’ long–term expansion and Jamestrong’s onshore aluminium casting line.
On the policy front, we explore APCO’s decision to pause its proposed EPR fee model, the united industry call for mandatory national producer responsibility, and stalled global plastics treaty talks.
Finally, we spotlight progress in circularity – from the launch of Soft Plastic Stewardship Australia and upgraded recycling infrastructure, to breakthrough technologies in glass, paper, metal and rigid plastics.

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, is joined by Wayne Robinson, Associate Editor of PKN and Editor of Print21, to provide insight, analysis and commentary on the top news stories shaping change in Australia’s dynamic packaging industry in September.
We begin by reviewing Orora’s sale of OPS to focus solely on cans and bottles, giving it more opportunity to grow in premium spirit and wine categories, as well as continue to uphold its market lead in aluminium cans. In other beverage news, Suntory has started production at its +$400 million multi-beverage manufacturing facility in Queensland, which includes high-speed glass and canning lines. We also discuss BioPak’s launch of its new compostable Beer BioCup range for outdoor events, Diageo’s launch of its Johnnie Walker paper-based bottle trial, and Pact Group collaboration with Hilton Foods, Woolworths Group and Cleanaway to deliver a fully circular solution for meat trays and fruit and vegetable punnets made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
Australia’s packaging regulatory reform continues to be a hot topic, and we provide insight into the webinar hosted by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), outlining a three-option framework for proposed reforms to the packaging system: strengthening the current co-regulatory framework, implementing national mandatory requirements, or establishing an extended producer responsibility scheme.
We wrap up by reviewing industry feedback on the DCCEEW webinar and explore the launch of the Labels and Packaging Coalition formed by the Visual Media Association (VMA), which aims to provide print industry technical expertise to inform government policy, targets and regulations.

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, is joined by Wayne Robinson, Editor of Print21 and Associate Editor of PKN, to provide insight, analysis and commentary on the top news stories shaping change in Australia’s dynamic packaging industry in July.
The episode focuses on packaging recycling, starting with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC)’s extension of its approval for the Soft Plastics Taskforce (comprising Australia’s three major supermarkets Aldi, Coles, and Woolworths) to continue to collaborate to find a solution to processing the 11m tonne stockpile of soft plastic from the failed REDcycle program. We review news of two soft plastics recycling facilities: iQRenew in NSW has just commissioned its new line which can process 15,000 tonnes of post-consumer soft plastics annually, and Recycling Plastics Australia in SA is starting construction on a $40m facility which will see some 14,000 tonnes of soft plastics recycled per annum. In the course of the discussion we also review the progress on kerbside plastic recycling schemes Curby and the National Plastics Recycling Scheme, take a closer look at the new brand identity that recycler Close the Loop has unveiled, and discuss what the commissioning of Australia’s first oxygen-fuelled furnace at Visy’s glass recycling facility in Sydney means for sustainable packaging.
Covering rigid plastics, we explore Pact Group’s involvement in the new circular Drums-to-Drums initiative to recycle agricultural chemical containers. We also consider Samsara Eco’s successful $100m funding raise to progress and scale up its enzymatic recycling technology.
Lastly, to wrap up this episode, we review SIG’s launch of a recycle-ready bag-in-box packaging for water, Australasian Recycling Label’s recognition in the AFR Sustainability list, and remind listeners about the upcoming Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) awards.

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News is joined by Kim Berry, Editor of Food & Drink Business, and Wayne Robinson, Editor of Print21 and Associate Editor of PKN, to provide insight, analysis and commentary on the top news stories shaping change in Australia’s dynamic packaging industry in June.
We start off the discussion by getting a review of the event hosted by the Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association (APPMA), which saw farewell to the long time chairman Mark Dingley, and celebrated the major contributions he has made to the packaging industry, as well as the introduction of the new chair Robert Marguccio. The discussion also explores updates from Fibre King with James Windsor being elected deputy chair and the development of a new multipacker for low volume beverage manufacturers.
Furthermore, we give an overview of the preponderance of packaging at the drupa event, Pact Group’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and the unfortunate drop in share price following Raphael Geminder’s failed attempt to become its sole owner. We take a deep dive on this topic and review factors involved with increased materials costs, concerns surrounding the upcoming packaging legislation, which could inadvertently undermine local recyclers competing with imported recycled materials.
We wrap up by discussing Birds Eye who has announced it will be using 22% recycled content for its steam bags in their SteamFresh Veggie line, and get an insight into the exciting outcomes from the PKN Women in Packaging Awards.

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News is joined by Kim Berry, Editor of Food & Drink Business, to provide insight, analysis and commentary on the top news stories shaping change in Australia’s dynamic packaging industry in April.
We unravel the recent developments concerning Qenos, an Australian plastic resin manufacturer, which has been placed in Voluntary Administration and closed its Botany manufacturing facility. We discuss the impact of this decision on the local packaging industry, highlighting concerns regarding resin standardisation, supply chain interruptions, and the setback to Australia's plastics circularity ambitions.
Shifting to broader industry updates, we examine the ongoing bid by Raphael Geminder to acquire full control of Pact and delist it from the ASX. Additionally, we explore the removal of tariffs on Australian wines by China and its implications for the packaging sector, particularly in boosting demand for glass bottles and labels. We also cover significant global mergers, such as the approved acquisition of WestRock by Smurfit Kappa, and notable acquisitions within the food packaging space, including BioPak's acquisition of Huskee. On the recycling front, we highlight Visy's achievements in increasing recycled content in glass packaging and Pact Group's efforts to recycle milk bottles, earning it recognition at the Chemistry Australia Industry Awards.
Wrapping up the discussion, we touch upon Australia's progress towards packaging sustainability targets, the upcoming Hive Awards, and the Women in Packaging awards, reflecting on the industry's commitment to innovation and positive change.

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News talks to Julia Kay, co-creator and co-CEO of Great Wrap, about the company’s entrepreneurial journey to developing a compostable pallet wrap. The Melbourne start-up was inspired by Julia and her husband Jordy’s former careers in architecture and winemaking, which showed them the sheer impact that plastic pallet wrap has on the environment.
The discussion starts with an insight into the shift Great Wrap underwent from manufacturing home compostable cling wrap for household use on a small scale, to moving to a larger, more sustainable, and localised factory able to produce the industrial stretch wrap options now available in their range.
Julia adds insight into the challenges around selecting the right raw material to deliver the tensile strength required for pallet wrap, and the measures taken to ensure the products can be composted. Julia also shares her experiences showing the pallet wrap product at APPEX, and the feedback from attendees.
We wrap up with a mention of Great Wrap’s new c02 to PHA biorefinery, plans for international expansion, the growth in the team, and finally, some sage advice for entrepreneurs from Julia.

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Chris Foley, CEO of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), about the Review of the 2025 National Packaging Targets.
In the face of the disappointing reality delivered by the headline data that the targets are not on track to be met by December 2025, Foley calls for a stronger co-regulatory model which strikes a balance between industry-led action and effective government regulation.
Foley dissects some of the data in depth. The biggest challenge lies with the target of recycling or composting 70 per cent of plastic packaging. The discussion gives us a comprehensive evaluation of current packaging solutions for flexible and rigid plastic packaging and whether we can meet our capacity to recycle them.
We discuss the APCO Review’s key findings and suggestions, with a focus on what can be achieved by the 2025 deadline, and also looking beyond 2025. Foley talks on resetting the co-regulatory and collaborative frameworks between government and industry, and interventions to regulate packaging materials to promote circularity.

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Cath Cornaggia, Commercial Director of Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials, Australia & New Zealand. We discuss the concept of regeneration as a natural evolution beyond sustainability, which focuses on active replenishment over just reducing the resources we use. Cath Cornaggia tells us how this is accomplished by the digitisation of packaging and further collaboration within the industry. The discussion also explores the role that the government, packaging suppliers, and research play in this initiative. This gives us an interesting insight into how Avery Dennison is implementing these solutions globally in various industries.
The episode also unpacks defining and achieving a circular economy, and the role of the consumer and societal equality has in achieving this. Finally we discuss the opening of Avery Dennison's new facility in Moorabbin, designed with sustainability in mind.

Episode Title:How soft plastics can come full circle, with REDcycle’s Liz Kasell.Show Notes:In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Liz Kasell, the CEO and founder of REDcycle, a Melbourne-based consulting and recycling organisation that has over the last ten years developed and implemented recovery initiatives for post-consumer soft plastic across Australia with over 1900 collection points, mostly in Coles and Woolworths supermarkets. At the time of recording, REDcycle has just announced its merger with advanced recycling pioneer iQ Renew, and here Liz outlines the terms of the merger and how this will add impetus to both companies’ efforts to help industry achieve Australia’s 2025 National Packaging Target for soft plastics recycling. Through this powerful collaboration, REDcycle hopes to accelerate and leverage the key competencies of both organisations to achieve better outcomes than what is possible in isolation.Liz talks about the need for robust and resilient pull-through of recycled content products throughout the value chain to create a successful circular economy. She urges all stakeholders to play their part by going out of their way to search for and buy recycled content products, so driving end-market demand. Liz also talks about how this switch in industry behaviour would be beneficial to the overall Australian economy as more jobs are created and more manufacturing is stimulated with less dependence on exported materials. We wrap the episode up with Liz’s plans for REDcycle and her expectations for the company in the next ten years. Liz hopes to expand her collaboration with organisations to include more Australian citizens who could become a crucial part of the end market journey by making material circularity a reality.------------------------------The PKN Podcast is produced by Southern Skies Media on behalf of PKN Packaging News, owned and published by Yaffa Media. The views of the people featured on this podcast do not necessarily represent the views of PKN Packaging News, Yaffa Media, or the guest’s employer. In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Dr Kim Borg from the Monash Sustainable Development Institute’s research enterprise Behaviour Works Australia, about the recent research into the impact of tailored messaging on consumers' approach to single-use plastics. The research study was led by Dr Borg, along with colleagues Professor Jo Lindsay and Dr Jim Curtis and was conducted among 1,001 Victorian adults to determine how media content about plastic could influence perceptions, intentions and behaviours of two groups — ‘plastic users’ and ‘plastic avoiders’.This in-depth interview not only aims at finding out the why and how behind the research but also discusses the intriguing results. Dr Borg explains the process of ensuring the results would be conclusive, including deducing different types of consumers and assessing various communication tactics on them. The conversation turns to considering the effect that COVID-19 has had in reversing the trend to reusable packaging, due to the increased use of single-use plastic products for takeaway products driven by the hygiene-first ideology. We wrap the episode with recommendations for environmental communicators on messaging against unnecessary and problematic (difficult to recycle) single-use plastics and introducing positive change for society. The research findings have been published in the paper Targeted Change: Using Behavioral Segmentation to Identify and Understand Plastic Consumers and How They Respond to Media Communications in the journal Environmental Communication which can be found at: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17524032.2021.1956558------------------------------The PKN Podcast is produced by Southern Skies Media on behalf of PKN Packaging News, owned and published by Yaffa Media. The views of the people featured on this podcast do not necessarily represent the views of PKN Packaging News, Yaffa Media, or the guest’s employer. In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Helen Millicer, director at One Planet Consulting and a Churchill Fellow, on the fundamental changes required in Australia to meet the 2025 plastics packaging targets. The discussion starts with the major challenges associated with litter polluting our oceans and importance of increasing reuse and recycling of plastics within Australia following the Australian government's world-first ban on exporting unprocessed plastics to other countries. A comparison is made with Europe where even the worst performing EU country is recycling plastic at levels far ahead of Australia.Helen describes key changes introduced by Victoria in kerbside collection and plastic bags, celebrates the national actions to clean up plastics by removing single use disposable items, and calls for more collective and collaborative ventures for reusable packaging, and price incentives for recyclable packaging and costs for non-recyclables. New ways of thinking about packaging are required to increase return and reuse while government mandates will help to create incentives for reuse and recycled content. The episode notes that Australia is one of few countries in the world blessed with the full plastics production supply chain on-shore which provides us a unique capacity for a more circular economy for plastics. Significant investment from government and private sources is increasing reprocessing facilities in Australia, but game changing initiatives are required in reuse, collection and reprocessing at scale or Australia will not meet its 2025 packaging targets. We wrap up with a look at Helen's new work with the federal government, and the importance of collaboration, strategies, targets and financial incentives to bring about the changes required to increase reuse, repair and recycling across all product lines, not just plastics.------------------------------The PKN Podcast is produced by Southern Skies Media on behalf of PKN Packaging News, owned and published by Yaffa Media. The views of the people featured on this podcast do not necessarily represent the views of PKN Packaging News, Yaffa Media, or the guest’s employer. In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News and Nikki Moeschinger, the managing director of BrandOpus discuss the multilayered topic of brand and pack design, exploring how brand, often the most valuable asset on a company’s balance sheet, is regularly under-utilised, misunderstood and dismissed as “the logo.”Nikki explains how, in the context of FMCG, a strong brand can be brought to life on the all-important packaging touchpoint to deter competition, protect market share and help to command a price premium. The discussion then moves into an outline of BrandOpus' four-step framework for the creation or renovation of a brand, covering the importance of creating and consistently using distinctive brand assets and the pitfalls of surveying irrational consumers in order to rationalise their behaviour through standard techniques when researching brand and packaging design. The framework allows BrandOpus to work with clients to ensure that their product packaging reflects and supports the key aspects of their brand to ensure all touchpoints with consumers are consistent.Nikki provides a case study of a packaging assessment and subsequent design change which includes a discussion of how that change was assessed, planned, and implemented to carefully manage the change for the client and their consumers. She then moves on to identifying a market category that is ripe for branding disruption, along with the concerns that can be associated with introducing technology to packaging such as augmented reality, QR codes and other new features. We wrap up with a discussion of a project that BrandOpus conducted to assess, design, and introduce key branding packaging for a new product recently launched to the market.------------------------------The PKN Podcast is produced by Southern Skies Media on behalf of PKN Packaging News, owned and published by Yaffa Media. The views of the people featured on this podcast do not necessarily represent the views of PKN Packaging News, Yaffa Media, or the guest’s employer. In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Richard Smith, Director of Sustainability at Amcor Flexibles Asia Pacific about the flexible packaging paradox and the Holy Grail 2.0 project. We start by discussing the dilemma that flexible packaging is so successful due to its numerous sustainable advantages yet these very properties make it hard to recover and also low value in the recovery stream. We then move on to the progress being made to improve the recovery of flexible packaging material, including work by RedGroup/RedCycle and Replas, and the latest developments in kerbside recovery of flexible packaging.Richard covers four key areas required to improve the circular life cycle for flexible packaging, which include the use of common materials that are optimised for recycling to support critical mass at collectors, consumer engagement, kerbside collection and advanced chemical recycling to ensure the recycled materials can be product safe when reused. The big picture view of the circular life cycle requires policies that will support bringing recycling in-country which, in turn, will create new jobs, income and opportunities. We then move on to discussing the Holy Grail 2.0 project and its goal of improving recycling through the use of digital watermarks. Richard explains how the watermarks would work, the project's achievements to date and Amcor’s involvement with the project.Given Richard's role as a director on the board of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), we wrap up the discussion by covering the economic opportunities associated with meeting the 2025 National Packaging Targets.------------------------------The PKN Podcast is produced by Southern Skies Media on behalf of PKN Packaging News, owned and published by Yaffa Media. The views of the people featured on this podcast do not necessarily represent the views of PKN Packaging News, Yaffa Media, or the guest’s employer. PKN Managing Editor & Publisher Lindy Hughson is joined by Karli Verghese and Nerida Kelton. Karli is the Associate Professor and Principal Research Fellow in Industrial Design at RMIT and the Reduce Program Leader at the Fight Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre (CRC). Nerida is the Executive Director of the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), and project lead for the Save Food Packaging project in the Fight Food Waste CRC.We start the episode by noting that food waste is a major environmental problem that was recently highlighted by the UN's Food & Agriculture Organisation which held the first International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste on the 29th of September. Here in Australia, over 7.3 million tonnes of food is wasted annually across the supply and consumption chain with 34% of that waste being in the home.Karli provides an overview of the Fight Food Waste CRC and her role there along with a summary of the insights being gained from the various projects currently underway within the CRC. After this, Nerida describes how the AIP is involved with CRC, establishing guidelines to help packaging technologists minimise food waste across the chain, including in the home. This leads to a discussion about awareness of packaging's ability to reduce food waste and how there can be no solution to food waste without collaboration between all parties involved in the chain. The discussion then moves on to the importance of design and the use of active and intelligent packaging to prevent damage and spoilage, extend shelf life and preserve and enhance product appeal while still providing convenience and also communicating to consumers how to handle, store, prepare and reuse food products. We also discuss the changes in packaging to accommodate the shift in home sizes, where many people now are cooking for only one or two people, not a whole family. Examples of innovative designs include Woolworths’ new recyclable meat packaging and Hazeldene Chicken's recyclable, freezer-ready packaging that extends shelf life and which won the WorldStar Packaging that Saves Food Award this year. The concern is raised that accommodating smaller portion sizes can lead to more packaging but this can be balanced through innovative design that better accommodates recycling and a reduction in food wastage. This highlights the importance of taking a holistic view of the entire chain to determine the trade-offs between packaging and reduction of waste. We wrap up the episode with a view of the current status projects within the CRC and AIP along with the plans they have for the short to medium term, including activities associated with next year's International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste.------------------------------The PKN Podcast is produced by Southern Skies Media on behalf of PKN Packaging News, owned and published by Yaffa Media. The views of the people featured on this podcast do not necessarily represent the views of PKN Packaging News, Yaffa Media, or the guest’s employer. PKN Managing Editor & Publisher Lindy Hughson is joined by Joanne Howarth, the Founder & CEO of Planet Protector Packaging.Joanne is an entrepreneur with big passion determined to make a big impact.Joanne explains how she was driven to find a planet-friendly form of packaging through her extensive use of polystyrene packaging for cold chain distribution in her previous role. This led her to research the use of sheep’s wool as a natural thermal insulator, allowing her to convert otherwise discarded belly wool into Woolpack, a lining material for boxes that can be recycled or composted.Woolpack delivers superior performance to polystyrene for thermal packaging and is currently being used by clients shipping dairy products, meat, seafood and pharmaceuticals. It was recently featured as a case study with the World Wildlife Fund Australia's "Plastic: Revolution to Reality" report while the Lobster Protector variant won the gold medal award in the Food Design of the Year category at the 2020 Australasian Packaging and Innovation Design (PIDA) Awards,Joanne was recently named one of the seven winning laureates of the 2020 Cartier Women’s Initiative, the French jeweller’s international business program aimed at uncovering, recognising and supporting women entrepreneurs worldwide. This has provided her with new business connections and led to working with the UN's Industrial Development Organisation to support their sustainability development goals.Planet Protector is currently working with the Tasmanian government to replace polystyrene as part of the state's sustainable packaging initiative and is in the process of establishing a production site in Tasmania to reduce the cost of transporting packaging from the mainland. They are also seeking capital to move into the South East Asian market with a particular interest in Mongolia due to the volume of wool the country produces. We wrap up by discussing the importance of government support to help incentivise organisations to use sustainable packaging. Momentum is slowly gathering with Australian companies, but we are lagging behind New Zealand where the supermarkets have mandated the removal of polystyrene packaging for all products supplied to them.------------------------------The PKN Podcast is produced by Southern Skies Media on behalf of PKN Packaging News, owned and published by Yaffa Media. The views of the people featured on this podcast do not necessarily represent the views of PKN Packaging News, Yaffa Media, or the guest’s employer. PKN Managing Editor & Publisher Lindy Hughson is joined by Jacky Nordsvan, the head of packaging at Nestle Australia. Jacky oversees packaging for Oceania with a particular focus on packaging sustainability. She is involved with Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) and sits on the technical advisory committee of the Packaging Recyclability Evaluation Portal (PREP).Our discussion with Jacky starts with Nestle's vision towards sustainable packaging by 2025 and its three pillar strategy it has established to support the implementation of its vision covering packaging, recycling infrastructure and consumer behaviour. It includes how the PREP tool is used to identify packaging items that cannot be recycled so that alternative solutions can be found. The scope of this effort is enormous as Nestle has approximately 2,000 SKUs, many of which have more than one type of recyclable material in their packaging.Jacky outlines Nestle's recently launched kerbside trial with IQ Renew and the NSW Central Coast Council to capture soft plastics for recycling in a special bag that, when full, can be put inside the recycling bin for collection and subsequent processing. We also discuss Nestle's partnership with REDcycle's soft plastics recycling program.Nestle's brands are preparing to champion recycling to consumers as part of Nestle's third pillar. Jacky explains how this will involve the extensive use of the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) and messaging on packaging to positively motivate consumers. Past examples of this effort includes KitKat Chocolatory introducing “Give the planet a break” on its e-commerce packaging in 2019, with other brands set to release major campaigns later this year and in early 2021.To wrap up the episode, Jacky steps us through the various efforts currently underway to ensure Nestle can meet its goal of 100% recyclable or reusable packaging by 2025.------------------------------The PKN Podcast is produced by Southern Skies Media on behalf of PKN Packaging News, owned and published by Yaffa Media. The views of the people featured on this podcast do not necessarily represent the views of PKN Packaging News, Yaffa Media, or the guest’s employer. PKN Managing Editor & Publisher Lindy Hughson is joined by Pierre Pienaar, president of the World Packaging Organisation, to discuss the organisation’s goal to bring about a ‘better quality of life through better packaging for more people’.To set the context, Lindy provides a snapshot of PKN Packaging News' sixty years of history, its focus on the packaging industry and the rapid change in packaging which is helping to make this the most exciting time to be in the industry. We then discuss the World Packaging Organisation (WPO), its engagement with the UN, the role of its president and Pierre's three main objectives which are to reduce food waste, reduce packaging waste and increase global awareness of packaging.Pierre highlights the importance of educating children in first to third grade to build consumer awareness of packaging and recycling at an early age. He notes the UN's statement that, at our current rate of non-sustainable packaging use, by 2050 we will need the equivalent of three planet Earths to provide sufficient resources. Pierre discusses the circular economy, the importance of waste elimination through recycling and how packaging can be the solution rather than the problem. He also notes the importance of businesses having suitably trained and qualified people in charge of packaging development to ensure that recycling issues and the circular economy are addressed from the beginning of product development. We wrap up the episode with a discussion on the increased number of WorldStar Packaging Awards being won by companies from Australian and New Zealand noting that, for the first time, a local company has won the WPO President's Award for innovation in packaging that supports recycling and reduces waste.------------------------------The PKN Podcast is produced by Southern Skies Media on behalf of PKN Packaging News, owned and published by Yaffa Media. The views of the people featured on this podcast do not necessarily represent the views of PKN Packaging News, Yaffa Media, or the guest’s employer.
