The vibration behavior of a resonant system can be modified dramatically by the additional of one or more relatively small resonant substructures. The simplest example is a tuned mass damper, in which a single small element is added with a resonant frequency tuned to match that of the primary system. We consider the case of multiple elements added with prescribed distributions of properties (mass, stiffness, damping) to achieve a variety of effects in frequency or time domain. ...

Micro/nanoscale thermal radiation has attracted great attention due to the promising applications in energy harvesting, nanomanufacturing, thermal control and management, and high-resolution thermal mapping. In the near-field, radiative heat transfer between closely spaced objects can be...

In this seminar, recent developments in the design of self-folding origami will be presented. A design framework consisting of target shape identification and rigid foldability analysis, modeling and optimization, and prototype fabrication will be described. Particular focus will be on finite element and rigid body dynamic modeling and optimization approaches for single and multi-field actuation of self-folding origami structures.

Here I will discuss how we are using new fabrication strategies (three-dimensional laser engraving, 3D printing) to create architectured / bio-inspired materials with highly unusual combinations of properties: High stiffness and high toughness in nacre-like glasses and ceramics, hardness and flexural compliance in fish scale-inspired protective skins.
