Time flies! Inspire Group is 20 years young!
Aidan Stoate interviews Dan Tohill on all the challenges, changes and lessons learnt in the L&D industry over the last 20 years.
Inspire started with an idea, to bring to the market a new approach to organisational learning with the belief that – 'better learning is life changing'.
Over the last 20 years we have grown from our Wellington base to Auckland, Australia and Malaysia and now serve a global market with learning solutions, leadership development and talent solutions.
From a distance the growth curve looks like a smooth trajectory, but just like personal growth, there’s been plenty of ups and downs, steps forward and backwards and a few sideways moves.

Aidan Stoate interviews Andrew Curtis, one of our trusted associates here at Inspire Group.
Andrew Curtis is captivated by finding the answer to one question, How do you really help someone?'. This search began in his teens as he tried to find ways to help friends and family members with mental health challenges and has since become part of his journey as an entrepreneur, leadership coach and training facilitator. Andrew's skills as a communicator are combined with his understanding and compassion for the human condition; fostering safe and inspiring environments where life-changing insights are possible. Listen to this episode to get tips and techniques on how to effectively lead and engage with people in a virtual working environment and how to facilitate great learning experiences and meetings online.
Some of our favourite quotes from Andrew in this episode:
"The only way to get trust is to give trust. If I'm the leader then I have to show trust first. I have to look for ways that I trust you."
"If I have trust I have everything."
"When it comes to creating that trust environment, I look for opportunities to share moments where I haven't understood, or where I have failed to meet an objective. And what I'm saying as a leader is that I want to create a high-trust environment here. So whereby I'm sharing an area that I had to learn, people pick up that this is a place where they can say they don't understand."
"In a virtual meeting I find I need to be really directive and really clear on what I want and how I want people to respond."
"The principle of trust and open sharing is the foundation of really good conversations. In terms of how you really help someone, one of the most powerful things that I have discovered is if a person is safe to notice their own thinking about something, that is when change can become possible."
"As a leader I have to think how can I give trust first, how can I give safety first, how can I give as sense non-judgement first, and then I can build from there."
"Your energy will follow where your heart is, and you can't fake that long term."

In this episode Dan Tohill interviews Todd Hammington a Visual Designer, Illustrator, UX and UI expert and product owner of Chameleon Creator an online learning authoring tool.
Listen to Todd explain how UX and UI principles can be used in a learning design context to enhance learning outcomes.
Some of our favourite quotes from Todd in this episode:
"A good learning designer really cares about the user experience, they really care about the end user learning something"
"Sticking to UX design principles means you're taking away the subjectivity around whether you like the colour blue or not. You're bringing in real data into the conversation because you've gone out and tested it with the end users. It's hard to argue with that"

In this episode Dan Tohill interviews David James the Chief Learning Officer at Looop and Podcast Host of The Learning & Development Podcast.
David James discusses the challenges in learning and development and how we're in for a tough time as a result of the pandemic as we're set to make up for lost opportunities in harsh economic circumstances. In this episode David shares his ideas on: * Accelerated apprenticeships - when it really mattered we didn't do any training at all * Why are we trying to solve problems that Google already has covered? * Performance support and performance consulting are key learning tools often undervalued. * L&D today can get stuck in administering and delivering courses whilst not taking into consideration performance in a meaningful way.
Where David believes the future of learning and development should be focussed on: * Eliminating the administration in learning and development for more efficiency. * High levels of automation in L&D focussed on the employee working experience - not trying to create a parallel learning experience. * Being more data driven and demonstrating the value and impact of learning. * The formative understanding of data, showing where the critical points of failure are in the organisation and addressing those issues directly.
David has been a People Development professional for more than 20 years, most notably as Director of Talent, Learning & OD for The Walt Disney Company across Europe, the Middle East & Africa. As well as being the Chief Learning Strategist at Looop, David is a prominent writer and speaker on topics around modern and digital L&D as well as an active member of the CIPD L&D Advisory Board.

Inspire Group CEO Dan Tohill interviews Inspire Group Leadership Development Manager Nic Veltman on the topic of mindset and leadership and why it's so important.
"Everybody talks about growth mindset and how you can only achieve outcomes, goals and aspirations if you have a growth mindset. I completely disagree. I truly believe that everyone has both a growth mindset and a fixed mindset and they use them interchangeably every single day." Nic Veltman
Inspire Group Leadership Development Manager

In this fascinating conversation Dan Tohill interviews Andrei Hedstrom, CEO & Co-Founder of Sweetrush, an award-winning and industry leading learning company that operates globally and has been operating virtually for over 10 years.
They cover Andrei's history in the industry and the story of how he came to co-found Sweetrush. They also discuss the disruption caused by the global pandemic and how he predicts this will impact the L&D industry.
Below are some of our favourite quotes from Andrei during the conversation:
* *"The move to virtual learning is like an avalanche right now. And it's not just for this moment. It's anticipated that 'coming back' is going to be different."*
"Disruption as tragic as it is on a lot of levels, really gives us a new opportunity to ask, what is going to enrich my people's lives?"
"How can I apply my craft to the meaningful problems? So we can experience being heroes and not just consumers."
"The reason why I like learning and development is that education lifts people out of poverty. That's proven."
"The most important learnings in my life had something to do with love or suffering."

Assessment and Evaluation
Stu and Dan share their perspectives on learning design around assessment and evaluation.
"It's the one and done, it's the tick-box style of learning that is a missed opportunity. We really need to move an organisation along to becoming a learning organisation as opposed to being an organisation that does learning."

Louise Duncan, Managing Director of TetraMap International, shares how the system helps people to communicate, build trust, collaborate and get through life’s challenges. With the current Covid-19 situation, the TetraMap framework (Firm, Clear, Calm and Bright) can be very effective in ensuring clarity in communication and ensure reach and engagement with a diverse audience.
At Inspire Group we've incorporated the TetraMap instrument into our Inspiring to lead programmes as it connects with our way of being at Inspire and is a tool that can be used in any global context to help leaders (or anyone) tailor their approach to situations they find themselves in. It is simple, easy to understand, relatable and fits right in with how we want to help our leaders grow as people through our Inspiring to lead programmes.
Stu Neighbour and Dan Tohill riff on what they've been learning in lockdown, and in particular what makes 'good learning'. They discuss some exemplar role models of teaching in their lives and how they've applied these ideas to their guitar practice and pursuit of continuous learning and improvement.
"With all good learning you need to answer: Why should I care about this? Why does it matter? With every topic it needs to be up front in neon lights. This why you should care about this, this is why it should matter to you. And if you're struggling to answer this, then maybe it shouldn't be the thing you're focusing on." Stu Neighbour

Inspire Group CEO, Dan Tohill, interviews Inspire Group Auckland Regional Manager Aidan Stoate on the topic of coaching and how it's so important during these uncertain times. As we are all adjusting to the new normal of working from home, Aidan and Dan explore how coaching conversations can be extremely helpful in assisting people to make meaning of their situation.
In this episode we cover:
An effective coaching conversation can feel uncomfortable. For both the coach and the individual being coached. If we look at it within an organisational context and leader as coach, often there is a really strong impulse for leaders to interject with a solution or apply some form of mentoring within the coaching situation, especially if the coach has some advice or guidance in the area. So coaches need to manage their impulse to jump in and solve the situation for their counterpart.
A coach needs to think about what they bring to the interaction. An effective coaching conversation is totally focussed on the person being coached, it's not about you achieving your goals or your objectives but it is about you being an enabler for somebody else to achieve those for themselves. A lot of leaders want to solve problems for people and make life easier for people. Sometimes a coaching conversation is not what needs to be had.
Everyone is now dealing with a significant amount of uncertainty and ambiguity and it is okay. Within a coaching context, coaching can be an effective way to help people manage that ambiguity and uncertainty. I would encourage regular conversations, continue to communicate with your team, your community, with your family. Once we do return to some form of normality, let's think of the principles that allowed us to get through this time and use them and apply them on a larger scale. It is important to be able to look forward and acknowledge the good things that are happening at the moment.

Inspire Group CEO Dan Tohill interviews Inspire Group Asia CEO James McCulloch on the topic of Leadership, how this area of work has evolved over time, and what we need to think about now in terms of making the biggest impact.
In this episode we explore:
The leadership we need now - blog excerpt:
*One of the biggest impacts on our health, happiness and wellbeing is where many of us will spend around **10,000 days** of our lives: work.* *And the biggest influence on those 10,000 days? The leadership we experience and practice.*
Still not convinced? Well, think for a moment about the worst job and the worst leader you’ve experienced. And your life at that time; how you felt, and how it impacted the people and parts of your life well away from work.
Yes, the impact and reach of leadership is huge. And, in the current challenging times, arguably even more so.
