On this episode, MindStrong Project founder Harvey Martin and Strength Coach Brian Peters have an amazingly energizing conversation with Rich Hill, the Head Baseball Coach at the University of San Diego.

In our conversation, Coach Hill shares his thoughts on how his success in coaching has been so sustainable.  A few themes stuck out - Relationships and Connection.  Coach Hill leans on influences such as Brené Brown, Nick Saban, and Mike Krzyzewski.  He expresses an approach of treating players with firmness, while also being an authentic human.  Brian and Harvey reflect how their own relationships with their leaders have held similar sentiments.

Furthermore, Coach Hill discusses the importance of cultivating a strong mindset.  He dives into the benefit of having a dynamic mental toolbox, and learning how to interact with fear.  One overarching theme encompassed the entire conversation - Gratitude.  Throughout the entire show, Coach Hill's mindset of abundance and appreciation were both inspiring and contagious.

Coach Hill has built the USD Toreros into one of the premier Division I baseball programs on the West Coast.  In his 33 years as a head coach at the collegiate level (22 at USD), he Coach Hill has amassed 28 winning seasons and is the youngest coach in the West Coast Conference (WCC) with 1,000 wins.  He is also the winningest coach, both active and all-time, in the WCC.  Coach Hill has seen his Toreros win 6 conference championships, and garnered national attention regularly - being ranked or receiving votes in 15 consecutive years.

Hill has coached dozens of All-Americans, a handful of Major Leaguers- highlighted by the Chicago Cubs' Kris Bryant, reached 8 NCAA tournaments, hosted an NCAA regional as a National seed in 2007, and was the U.S. Collegiate National Team Head Coach in 2015.

From our conversation with Coach, we also gathered that he is chasing every competitive edge possible, and leaning on his faith to impact the lives of collegiate players daily.  Coach Hill spends his days surfing, doing breathwork and meditation, speaking, and aiming to connect with others in the most authentic and vulnerable way.  After spending just an hour with Coach Hill, it's no surprise to see the success he's had at USD.

***Special Thanks to our great friend and mentor Logan Gelbrich, a former USD Torero himself, who connected us with Coach Hill.

Each day we make over 200 food decisions. As athletes, what we put in our bodies directly impacts our performance and the speed at which we recover from training or exercise. Glucose is used by the body for energy production, but too much of it and it begins to cause serious cell damage oftentimes leading to severe inflammation, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and poor tissue health.

Glucose spikes are caused when too much sugar (glucose) is taken into the body at one time. The mitochondria become overwhelmed and the body produces free oxygen radicals that go and attack other cells. Glucose is a sugar/starch molecule in its simplest form, so think sugar, cookies, pastas, oats, among others.

For years, athletes have been told to carb load before games or performance. But is it really all that good for us when we know that glucose spikes caused by eating too many carbs actually ends up hurting our bodies in the long run? The answer might surprise you.

Join hosts Harvey Martin and Matt Arends as they chat with Jessie Inchauspe aka Glucose Goddess about the health impacts of glucose spikes, how to avoid them and flatten the glucose curve, and how to avoid the adverse effects the next time you go for that big bowl of pasta or oatmeal.

Check out the amazing studies by Jessie on her Instagram: @glucosegoddess

She releases studies on how to best pair food, what tricks can help you stabilize spikes, and which foods cause larger spikes than others.

Here’s a few key research articles to learn more about glucose and the health impacts of glucose spikes on the body:

  2. "Mitochondrial allostatic load puts the 'gluc' back in glucocorticoids" - Study on the health impacts of glucose spikes

On this week's episode, Harvey and Austin have a unique conversation around the idea of energy. Specifically, that there is a fundamental problem or misunderstanding about how the brain and body communicate based on available energy and energy efficiency. In fact, most Americans - even the majority of professional athletes - are metabolically inefficient. The duo discusses how energy is a feedback loop for survival (most of us are in survival mode) and decision making, as well as how the body will conserve energy at all costs when a person's energy systems are not efficient. This will lead our brain to only let the body spend energy when we "feel like it" a.k.a. highly motivated. The guys finish by explaining how our best self can be unlocked for abundance and vitality only through harnessing our energy - which is heavily understood through the mechanisms of breathing. Today's conversation may be helpful for any person who feels the desire to grow, yet is not finding the growth they had in mind - whether it's mental, physical, emotional, or even interpersonal. Enjoy!

On this week's episode, Harvey shares a conversation with the brilliant Austin Einhorn - Founder of Apiros Movement Training in Santa Cruz, California. During his tenure of coaching movement, Austin has had the privilege to help athletes and organizations in every major professional sports league in America; including the PGA, Seattle Seahawks, Houston Rockets, US Men's National Volleyball Team, Stanford Men's Volleyball Team, Chinese Olympic Committee, and professional surfers.

Before finding his career in natural movement training, Austin had a decorated career playing volleyball at the University of California - Santa Cruz. He garnered a 3-time All American status, helping the program finish 2nd and 3rd in the NCAA Tournament.

Austin's journey growing up as a naturally curious kid, as well as his passion for athletics led him to constantly internally challenge the current movement training paradigm. He views the path of athletic mastery as an "encompassing blissful journey where we progressively improve our beliefs, movements, language, the optimization of our cellular and mitochondrial health, psychology and more."

As Harvey and Austin dive deeply into the nuance of movement, they discuss the misunderstanding of shoulder movement, the value in learning how babies move, the evolution of movement through in history and through a lifetime, and Austin's quest to minimize non-contact injury. On this week's Episode, Harvey and Austin go to Instagram Live to talk about breathing and performance, as well as field questions from viewers that relate to many different topics within performance and breath work. Questions range from adapting the body for cold/hot environments in performance through breathing, understanding how breathing is impacted during intense (anaerobic) training and how to shift in and out of aerobic/anaerobic arousal with our breathing, and becoming aware of accidental breath-holding and how that can influence the body/mind. Harvey pokes at Austin repeatedly because of his low energy, due to a poor night of sleep.
