Liz Derstine is a musician, runner, writer, and as of 2020, a long-distance hiker. On July 7, 2020, she embarked on the life-altering adventure of through-hiking the 2,193-mile Appalachian Trail, as quickly as possible. Now, having had several years to reflect on this epic journey, Derstine tells her whole AT story: from what inspired her to want to hike the entirety of this daunting trail, to how it all went down, through to the many ways her life has changed as a result of transporting herself on foot, through the wilderness, from Georgia to Maine. At its core, this is a journey of self-discovery. Since her record-setting AT hike, Derstine has continued to embark on incredible multiday hiking adventures. She now holds many Fastest Known Time (FKT) records, including among others the Long Trail FKT for a self-supported woman. Most recently, on July 1, 2023, she set the FKT for a self-supported woman on the Via Alpina in Switzerland, finishing in just under seven days. Derstine currently lives and Boston, and when she's away from the trail, she is studying classical piano at the Longy School of Music at Bard College.   Join Hear Her Sports Patreon https://www.patreon.com/hearhersports Support the show and women’s sports media https://www.buymeacoffee.com/hearher Find all episodes http://www.hearhersports.com/ Find Hear Her Sports on all social @hearhersports Find Women’s Running Stories on IG at https://www.instagram.com/womensrunningstories/ Find Women’s Running Stories at https://womensrunningstories.com/ Find Liz Derstine at https://www.mercuryontherun.com/ Find Liz Derstine on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/pinkfeathers/

Katherine Stewart-Jones was born and raised in Chelsea Quebec in the heart of the Gatineau Park. It was there that she started skiing with her family as soon as she could walk. she did began competing at local events when she was 5, BUT she was an all -around active kid. Like lots of Hear Her Sports guests, she did a wide range of sports including soccer, sailing, kayaking, canoeing and downhill skiing. During that time, sports were mostly about spending time outdoors and with her family. It was in high school, when she joined a sports program in that allowed her to juggle her full schedule of training and racing with schooling that Katherine decided to pursue skiing more seriously. Now as one of the older members of the Canadian National Team, and one of the few women racing for Canada at the World Cup level, it has become important to Katherine to be a role model for the younger female athletes on the team. She also spreads her love for all sports AND the outdoors through Classroom Champions and Fast and Female. With those two programs and with her teammates, she aims to empower women to take control of their own success and to dream big. In the episode we talk about those mentoring programs, how she works collaboratively with coaches and has taken that responsibility as well as her success into her own hands, quality training over quantity, looking at data, fear of losing fitness, and…. what she’s working on during the off-season. Since it IS her off season, we talk a lot about how she’s been spending the time resting and preparing to build on the incredible success she had last year, during a breakthrough season when Katherine raced to her first ever top 10 result and many top 20s. She also finished 20th overall in the World Cup distance ranking! The off season for any sport is an interesting time period both mentally and physically. Katherine offered up some great insights about her recent success and a change in outlook about competing. It was a privilege to talk to Katherine in the off season and get a good look at her mindset during this time of year.   Join Hear Her Sports Patreon https://www.patreon.com/hearhersports Support the show and women’s sports media https://www.buymeacoffee.com/hearher Find all episodes http://www.hearhersports.com/ Find Hear Her Sports on all social @hearhersports Find Katherine on IG at https://www.instagram.com/kstewartjones/ Find Katherine at https://katherinestewartjones.com/

Savilia Blunk was raised in rural Northern California. As the youngest of three, she spent her childhood chasing two older brothers around on rusty, hand-me-down bikes. Her love of the outdoors and the adrenaline from physical activity began with her parents providing an early introduction to pure adventure... Of course, strong internal motivation to keep up with her brothers also helped! Savilia started bike racing in high school through the NorCal NICA league – founded in 2009, NICA (the National Interscholastic Cycling Association) develops interscholastic mountain biking programs for student-athletes across the United States. Savilia is a six-time MTB National Champion, Pan Am Champion, current Elite Cross Country National Champion, and she has achieved two World Cup bronze medals. One of Savilia's biggest passions is to be an approachable mentor to kids getting into the sport, and to inspire cycling as a lifelong outlet.

Keep the Flame Alive is the podcast for fans of the Olympics and Paralympics. Hosted by Jill Jaracz and Alison Brown, this weekly show has everything fans want to know about the Olympic and Paralympic Movements: How sports work, history, host city information, and much more! During the Games, our daily recaps cover all of the action. Nordic Combined is the only sport on the current Olympic program that is only open to men. Many athletes are working to change that, including Team USA’s Annika Malacinski. Annika talks about how the sport works, which surprisingly involves a lot of body measurements, and we learn about one of the best winner’s prizes ever. Annika gets pretty frank with us about how tough it is to not have her discipline in the Olympics. It tried to get into 2022, but was denied.

Olympian Michelle Sechser is a lightweight rower. At Tokyo 2020 she finished 5th in the lightweight double sculls, an incredibly exciting race where the top 5 boats where less than a second apart. She has a long list of international and national results including a win in the lightweight double sculls at the 2021 World Rowing Final Olympic Qualification Regatta and a second in the OPEN weight double sculls at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. She’s been a USA National Team rower for nine years. Michelle was born in San Luis Obispo, California and began rowing at age 14 for Capital Crew after seeing how much her older sister was enjoying the sport. She attended University of Tulsa, Oklahoma, a D1 school, on a full ride scholarship. She then earned an MBA at the same school and transitioned into coaching there. Once out of school, she decided to learn how to scull, which is rowing with 2 oars, as compared to sweep rowing, which is with 1 oar because she wanted to try out for the National Team. As I mentioned, did make the National Team for 9 years, missed making the 2016 Olympic Team and struggled with injury. She and rowing partner Molly Reckford came back strong, made the Olympic Team, set a world record in their Semi-Final race there, before an excellent, tough final. This is a SPECIAL episode. Not only is it Episode 20! But my guest is superstar Sports Nutritionist Heidi Skolnik, who I worked with during my NYC racing days. I remember her with great fondness and admiration. It felt like visiting a secret weapon as I rode over the George Washington Bridge to get to her New Jersey office.

In this episode we talk about fuel vs nutrition, manipulating diet to perform better, carbohydrates, and her work with The Julliard School and School of American Ballet. She works at The Women’s Sports Medicine Center at Hospital for Special Surgery and has a private practice, Nutrition Conditioning for Life Performance.

Heidi's practice is based on the science of nutrition. She has authored and co-authored 3 books: Nutrient Timing for Peak Performance, Grill Yourself Skinny, and The Reverse Diet: Lose Weight by Eating Dinner for Breakfast and Breakfast for Dinner.

Heidi still works with private clients through her company Nutrition Conditioning for Life Performance in addition to overseeing the Sports Nutrition program at The Julliard School and School of American Ballet. In the past she’s worked with the NY Knicks, NY Giants, and NY Mets along with NHL, MLS, WNBA, Olympic competitors, professional cyclists, marathoners, and collegiate athletes. She also works at The Women’s Sports Medicine Center at Hospital for Special Surgery. And she writes for magazines, appears on TV, writes books, consults to corporations and the food industry, and presents to corporations, professional organizations, universities, and colleges.
