Anthony and Chris have two of our favorite guys on, David and Caden fron Cold Front Diesel. You may remember them breaking records emissions-compliant LML that threw down 706 horsepower and 1,200 FT-LBS of torque. To go completely the other way, the Cold Front boys bought a "winter beater" aka a former plow truck, and these boys are from Northern Michigan, so you do the math. From there the 290,000 mile truck was just too reliable, so they decided to make it a drag and drive truck. This truck was built from many different used parts to the point the boys named it Project Hand Me Down. Our crew talked to them utilizing it for Sick Summer 2026 and the upcoming Sick Michigan coming up this month (August). From breaking the truck doing burnouts to running their diesel shop up north, we talked about it all!
This week the boys wanted to discuss how much the industry has pushed diesel truck modifications to a different level. Turbo technology has drastically chaged for the good. Today's chargers are handling more power than ever while delivering better reliability and durability than what was possible just a few years ago.

Myer Stump came and conquered the AMSOIL UCC this year. Myer threw down numbers that are so impressive all of us at the podcast had to double take the stats we were reading. Myer ran ran a 4.903 sec drag time, 3,662!!!! horsepower on the dyno, and hooked to the sled and pulled 355 feet to take home the title at this years event. It's the most overall points accumulated at the event and it is insane how amazing he did. We had a a great time talking with Myer and he breaks down how he put the win all together right here!
We often get a ton of questions regarding what we would do with necessary upgrades for the LML Duramax. We figured we'd bring in one of the Calibrated Power Shop Techs, Nick Evertsen, to answer that question. Nick has been a GM tech and moved around to independent diesel shops to arriving over at Calibrated Power now. He is taking his decades plus amount of expertise to answer the question, 'Top five reliability upgrades for the 2011-2016 6.6L Duramax.' These trucks are now between 10 and 15 years old(insane to think), and we have the best upgrades that will keep your LML running optimally and for the long haul. Enjoy!
Austin Denny is a dude that makes you realize why you enjoy the diesel world. He and his 6.0L Powerstroke are back for a 3rd time at the AMSOIL UCC 2026! He wants a top 5 overall and with him placing 4th and 2nd in the drag racing portion of the event in his prior events, we think he can do it. Austin is diesel racing at heart, taking the 6.0L platform and puhing it into a different world. You definitely got a couple fans in us, Austin. Good luck!

Black smoke and power always kept Patrick Brown going! Since he was a young kid wrenching on tractors, combines, and farm equipment, Patrick was hooked on diesel. Patrick has been the owner of Moonlight Diesel And Fab now for just under 9 years and last year decide it was time to go after the biggest diesel event of the year. With this being second go round at the AMSOIL UCC he's looking to push his Blue VP44 Cummins into the top of the pack. We have always been massive fans of Patrick and we are stoked to see him continue to push the envelope of what the VP44 can do!
We are interviewing our first rookie of this years event, Jonny Hooper! Jonny is ready to put his 12 Valve Cummins into the competition and make some waves. Coming from a background in sled pulls and dirt drags up in Wisconsin, he is hooked to the experience of competition. Jonny is looking to have fun and achieve his own goals at this years AMSOIL UCC 2026. As avid 12 valve fans, we are going to have fun watching Jonny take on this years competitors!
From wrenching on everything to starting his own diesel shop, Black Magic Performance, to competing in his third AMSOIL UCC event, Colt Carter joins the podcast to talk his about his Cummins and what he expects from this year's event. From putting down a 2nd place finish his first AMSOIL UCC and then improving the next year in the drag race and dyno portion of the challenge, this man has left it all out there. Mike Brown is back on the show ahead of the AMSOIL UCC 2026! This will be Mike's third go round with the event. Mike has been hooked on diesel since his first truck purchased in 2016 and you'll hear in this episode his passion is even stronger now. Mike first competed in 2024 and he came out with a bang, placing on the podium with a 3rd place finish. Mike came out in 2025 and shaved a full half second off his drag race time, put down bigger dyno numbers, and pulled the sled farther than in his rookie event the year prior. We think Mike and his Cummins are going to push the limits even more so!

The amount of interesting aspects and the amount of money that is on the table for the competitors is mind boggling. The Seventy2fast has $500 callouts, where racers can target a specific driver to beat after putting down their money and the target matching, winner of a head-to-head race takes the money. Contigencies for Powerstroke and Duramax, Powerstrokes can win an extra $11k if they take home 1st place and Duramax drivers can earn an extra grand per round if they beat a Cummins or Powerstroke and an extra $3,000 to a winner racing a Duramax. $70k goes to the winner! Paul and Chris wrap up the first day of the UCC 2018 when a little drama on the track caught their attention.
Trevor Peterson captured the top qualifier spot on the DYNO with 2,100HP. Paul and Chris talk to him and his wife Trista about it. Then we learn about Trevor's strategy moving into the drag race and sled pull events. For now, Trevor Peterson is the top qualifier.
Jordan Molenaar says he's brought a knife to a gunfight. With his 2008 F350, Jordan says he's ready to win big in the sled pull competition, and that's it. But if he can make it through all events without breaking it's a win-win.
The Wounded Warrior Project helps veterans get back on their feet after serving in areas of conflict, like Iraq and Afghanistan. Big events like the Ultimate Callout Challenge offer opportunities to the WWP because here they can meet other vets - maybe even encounter those who may need their help. The organization provides outreach to help vets in need. Paul talks to Jesse Babson of Detroit, Michigan - an Army vet who served two tours - one in Iraq and the other in Afghanistan.

Where does a diesel enthusiast go for the latest, greatest gathering of diesel stuff - the DPI Expo! The Expo returns to Indianapolis, Indiana Lucas Oil Raceway May 4 - 6th, 2018 and features more than 100 vendors as of December 2017. More than likely, there will be dozens more by this spring. James Brendle and Chris Searle, organizers for the DPI, stopped by the podcast to go over the details and explain how the expo is becoming THE event of the diesel performance industry.
Diesel Power editor Kaje Jones joins the podcast to talk about the Diesel Power Challenge 2018. The event kicks off between Sunday, June 3rd to Thursday, June 7th in Denver, Colorado. Kaje explains how participants are voted into the challenge by Diesel Power Magazine. The process includes an entry form with info about the truck, including photos (existing trucks only). The Diesel Performance Podcast digs into the archives and posts an oldie but goodie - the Ultimate Tow Rig episode from January 2016. In this episode, local experts Nick Priegnitz and Tim Slater discuss with Paul what they would wish for in a towing package, if money was no object. As you listen, you'll hear a lot about all the details required haul something heavy without worry whether your truck will make it.
The H1 Hummer needed a new head gasket for its factory 6.5. Rather than keep the factory engine, the owner wanted an old 12V Cummins with an Allison from a bread truck - but Rob Hartman convinced him to go with an LBZ Duramax. The donor came from a wrecked 2006 with 160K. Only three months, and 130 hours of labor, the 2003 H1 Hummer had a new identity. The LBZ has 60% injectors, 68mm turbo, and an Allison 6 speed with a GM 261 transfer case. The project sits on 40's with a three-inch body lift, stock CP3 and a lift pump.
All of this is fascinating - of course - especially when you hear how Rob fit everything into the H1's engine bay.

The 1970 Chevy C-10 looks the part - rust mixed with a turquoise green, regular cab. Under the hood and on the ground is a different story. The old Chevy sits on an '06 LBZ frame and the engine bay holds a compound set-up pushing 750 HP to the ground. The truck belongs to WCFAB's Ryan Werhli, manager of the shop's fab department. Paul and Danny welcome a repost of one of the more popular podcasts - the 15K + 600 horsepower Budget Build episode that was uploaded way back in January 2016.
Find a used, light duty diesel pickup - spend 15K on mods and get it below 13 seconds in the quarter-mile. That's the focus of what we call our budget build episode featuring a lively and rowdy discussion between a trio of diesel heads: Pete "Shibby" Przybysz (Powerstroke), Chris Ehmke (Cummins), and Paul Wilson (Duramax). The group discusses how they would spend 15K on their build, explaining the logic behind their decisions, which the other participants cannot understand or agree. In the end, former DPP moderator Scott Henricks picks a "winner" and pisses everyone off.
Kelsie Epp joins the podcast to talk about her passion for diesel motorsports. The addiction began early in life when she bought her grandfather's Duramax. The truck needed repairs and she took it to a diesel performance shop and the rest is history. Right now she's getting ready for the race season. Kelsie says she makes 100 drag passes a season! For those interested in participating in the sport, Kelsie says to talk to someone first for some insight about the sport before making the first launch. Along with the drag racer, she has a triple turbo truck. Kelsie participated in the Diesel Power Challenge and says she may want to participate in the UCC.
Shawn recounts the exhaustive, grueling three-day UCC and the toll the event took on his truck. He explains his build and the transmission that apparently let go and prevented his team from being as competitive as last year.
Paul says the highlight of the Ultimate Callout Challenge was watching Team Triple Max's Wade Minter power down the sled track hitting more than 311 feet! It was quite an accomplishment for a Duramax - finishing in the top three overall! And it was Wade's first time "playing in the dirt!"
Derek Rose placed second in the 2017 Ultimate Callout Challenge - a tremendous accomplishment. His Cummins with a billet common rail with a 12v head and compound turbos posted 9.16 in the drag race, 2,047hp on the dyno, and ended the event with a 312 foot run in the sled pull. In this episode, Derek talks about each event and how he managed to pull off the second place finish. Despite his success, Derek is uncertain about next year's UCC. He says it depends on location and a few other factors. Preparing for the event requires an enormous sacrifice and Derek's not sure he's up to the task in 2018.
Wade Minter holds the MPH record in ET in NHRDA went sled pulling today at the UCC and killed it. In his first run he was over 300+ but he could throw it out and pull again. Danny and Paul caught up with Wade right after and he was really excited.

The 10.4L Cummins ISL windowed after the stock connecting rods failed. While some Internet bullies questioned the decision to use stock parts, Nick sets the record straight. Paul and Danny then describe the anticipated fun they're going to have at the UCC - sounding like a couple of teenage girls getting ready to go to the mall.
Rudy's Diesel Performance returns to the Ultimate Callout Challenge this year with the same Ford made famous last year in Salt Lake City - with plenty of adjustments and changes. Rawlings Barnes describes the build with Paul and Danny and offers a strategy for this year's event. Ric Newberry of Exergy Engineering says he could talk for three days about injectors. Exergy is one of the industries best injector modification and diagnostic providers. In this episode, Paul and Danny ask Ric to define the various parts on an injector - from the pulse width, percent versus horsepower, along with many, many others. Ric describes building the largest injector so far - 700% over for the Ultimate Callout Challenge event coming up in April 2017. On the fuel side of diesel performance, the injector is front and center for engine performance. It's one of the first considerations for a modified diesel truck.
Paul and Danny jump into one of their favorite topics - LML performance. The guys spend a big part of each and every day helping LML owners navigate the performance aftermarket, so it's a topic as natural to them as the hide on a white tail deer. The guys tackle the dead pedal, emissions intact versus delete, CP4 failure, and a variety of other topics LML owners need to hear.
Lyle Richmond of Bully Dog joins the Diesel Performance Podcast to talk about the company's aftermarket diesel particulate filter (DPF) for the Ford 6.4L. The innovative design offers dependability as compared to the stock DPF known for failure. Lyle says Bully Dog's Performance DPF requires fewer regens of shorter duration. It increases airflow and horsepower. When combined with the company's calibrations, the Ford 6.4L owner will then be able to initiate regen and even perform a stationary or forced regen. Bully Dog's Ford 6.4L DPF is designed more for functionality than high horsepower, performance applications. He should know, he's been involved in diesel engineering for nearly 30 years working for multiple manufacturers worldwide. Today Nicola is GM's Chief Engineer & Program Manager for Duramax where he's overseeing the rollout the next Generation Duramax - the 6.6L L5P, 2.8L Duramax and the 1.6L diesel power the new Chevy Cruze. Nicola explains to Diesel Performance Podcast's Nick Priegnitz, Danny Voss, and Paul Wilson some of the forthcoming changes to the GM diesel line-up. The new Chevy Cruze will feature a manual transmission because that's what customers said they wanted. The future will also include diesel configurations of a medium size SUV and Van. The Diesel Performance Podcast is the official podcast for the Ultimate Callout Challenge - a performance diesel event like no other. By invitation only, a couple dozen trucks and drivers will compete this April in Indianapolis - they'll drag, pull, and dyno against each other for the ultimate bragging rights. Last year's event resulted in several trucks running over 2,000 horsepower.
This is our first profile of a UCC participant - Nick Priegnitz of Calibrated Power Solutions. The DPP plans to interview all the participants, so we thought we'd start with someone close to home.
CPS will drive a 2011 Cummins dually with a displacement of 10.4L - increased from an 8.9 ISL. Twin 14mm fuel pumps and 500% over injectors from Exergy. DT's UCC truck will also sport a 10-foot bed instead of the eight-foot factory configuration.
The codes pop up on a Duramax when there's low fuel rail pressure: P0087 or P1093. Usually, the truck is performing at its maximum and unable to keep up with what's commanded. The common rail fuel system operates at 28 - 29,000 psi and needs to drop only 2,200 psi to trigger the trouble code. Once the pressure drops, the Duramax goes into limp mode. In this episode of the Diesel Performance Podcast, Paul welcomes back Calibrated Power Solution's service manager, Phil Grandinetti to diagnose the symptoms and propose solutions for low fuel rail pressure on the Duramax. Troubleshooting P0087 or P1093 is not that straight forward. The stock fuel system on a Duramax includes both high and low-pressure sides with each generating its own set of symptoms. Paul and Phil go into detail on the symptoms, diagnostics, failures, causes, fixes and prevention. This is a must-listen for every Duramax owner.
The legendary Gale Banks returns to the Diesel Performance Podcast. In this episode, Paul, Danny, and Nick Priegnitz learn about Gale's work with the new Duramax engine, the L5P. This episode examines the L5P's bottom end, along with the engine's amazing performance potential. Gale hopes to use the new design to reach 400 mph with a diesel at Bonneville The credit goes to GM, according to Gale. All the new and improved features on the L5P grew from GM's own design team.
Gale and Nick then get into the weeds on DYNOs - a mutual passion. Gale believes DYNOs should focus on measuring the horsepower and torque for specific performance applications, like drag racing, sled pulling or engine design. He cannot understand the usefulness of the so-called DYNO-Queens or trucks built for the purpose of hitting a number only.
The podcast with Gale concludes with a detailed discussion about air density in diesel performance. Gale also describes a new device that will measure boost air density called the iDash C(2)i - which stands for command, control, and information.
The ultimate diesel performance event gets underway in less than six months. Six months - a half-year - that's nothing when it comes to prep time for this years' participants in the Ultimate Callout Challenge. The 2017 event takes place at the Lucas Oil Raceway near Indianapolis, Indiana April 21 - 23 and promises to live up to the title - ultimate. Organizer Brandon Pierce joins the podcast to talk about the event - its founding and growth into what has been called the "Olympics of Diesel Motorsports." The Diesel Performance Podcast also announces its participation as the official podcast for the UCC, a true honor. The Diesel Performance Podcast welcomes Phil Grandinetti, a GM transmission expert and service manager for Calibrated Power. The Allison transmission is purpose-built to handle the torque supplied from the Duramax engine, a job it does very well. Phil gives Paul and Danny insight into how to best troubleshoot transmission issues. Tom Venhuizen became a sled operator when he realized it cost too much to build and run a sled pull truck. Now he can say he makes money at every sled event he attends! Tom joined the podcast to share a few stories about the operation of the Mechanical Mule. He explains how the mule works and how it has changed over the years. A newer pulling sled can be bought from two manufacturers, but Tom bought his back in the 1970s and has modified it extensively. Every year the pulling sled is inspected in preparation for the upcoming season for safety reasons. Although he may be along for the ride, Tom is also able to shut down the pull if it becomes unsafe. This episode of the Diesel Performance Podcast is a response to the debate between Danny and Paul about how much horsepower you can run on a stock long block Duramax. There's a new class in sled pulling - the outlaw class and it's a crowd pleaser. Unlike stock and 2.5 trucks, the outlaw class doesn't have any rules. It's a "run-what-you-brung" pull. You can have a 1,200 horsepower truck go up against one with less than half the horsepower and still be competitive against each other. Stuff is always breaking - so what's not to like about that, right?
