We often talk about how to get referrals, but what about giving them? Generally speaking, what we put out into the world is what we get in return. This means that when we are focusing on getting referrals, we should also be considering giving them—not to everyone you work with, but at least a few individuals that you truly believe deserve it. This begs the question: do you know how to give referrals the proper way? Listen in to find out!

Hopefully, you can tell that this title is sarcastic because getting more referrals isn’t complicated and it’s not complex. All it comes down to is identifying your referral sources and then taking care of them in the right way.

Many people second guess the basics because they seem too simple and they’re not very mind-blowing to read. Instead, they want a silver bullet solution. Something that is going to work quickly, almost like magic. However, the basics are where the magic happens. Without the basics, you won’t have a good foundation for building out your business.

“What do I need to do to take care of my referral sources the right way?”

It’s one of the most asked questions that I don’t answer, and there is a very specific reason why. I teach a number of different strategies that are foundational to the success of your business. I also teach strategies that are situational and next level. These strategies are generally for existing or current referral sources, not potential referral sources.

If I give you a referral plan of touchpoints without knowing anything about your specific business or clients, it will not be customized to your actual referral sources—and, therefore, it will not work. These touchpoints must be based on who your referral sources are. It must be personalized. So, let’s dive into how to make this a more unique experience for each of your referral sources.

There are three big - or key - referral strategies you need to put in place this year. You don't need to put them all in place at one time but by the end of the year, or by the end of 2nd Quarter, make it a goal to have all three of these in place. The three strategies are separate strategies but overlap in a few ways allowing you to have  truly referable business. The strategies are:

  1. More referrals from existing Referral Sources
  2. Referrals from new Referral Sources, new people referring you
  3. Referrals from your Client Experience

Are there other strategies - yes - but they build on the 3 Must Have referral strategies for 2022! Resources mentioned on this episode can be found on the show notes page at www.staceybrownrandall.com/187.

We're taught there are no dumb questions except the one not asked. But why do some of us struggle to believe that?  Why do some struggle to ask the questions they need answers to?

I love being asked questions by listeners of this podcast, readers of my book, audience members from my presentations, members of the Referrals Without Asking community and - of course - by my clients.

This Q&A episode is no different and packed with goodness, I'm so thankful for the life coach who wasn't afraid to ask her question.  There are factors to consider and mini-questions within the bigger question - so I dedicate the entire episode to this one life coach's question about Referrals Without Asking!

Do me a favor... when you think about ending the year referral stronger think longer term than just the next 45 days.  Think about how what you do now could have an impact on next year and the next five years.  Specifically what you can do now and through the next year to make your business more referable. That's the key and where you really need to focus if you want more referrals.  That's how you end the year referral stronger.

I know for some - the idea of generating referrals without asking may sound far fetched (it's not). So let's assume you want referrals without asking, or at least you are interested in knowing more. If that's the case, then you need to know how the parts work and how they work together.  I call them the 5 secret weapons. Okay, okay they aren't really secret since this is what I teach but I wanted to share them with you so you can find your gap if you are serious about generating referrals without asking.

Changing our mindset, beliefs and the way we do business can be tough.  Especially when you've been in business for 30 years. But of course it's possible.... if you want to. What I love about Diana's story - a realtor with Keller Williams in Portland - is that she could be you. Maybe you haven't been in business for 30 years but you do have a way of how you do business or how you choose NOT to do business. As is the case with Diana.  She was looking for a better way to generate referrals, that was authentic and felt right.  Here's her story.

If we're being 100% honest... when business is good - from referrals, repeat clients or other lead gen sources - we allow our busyness to replace spending time on the processes and procedures that would make our lives easier.  What makes that worse is what we don't focus on today, typically we don't feel until months later.  In my many conversations with business owners who know they should put the "Referrals Without Asking" strategy in place but can't make the commitment, I hear a few recurring themes of reasons why.  A big one is "I'm so busy with current clients".  But a referral strategy is not the only thing we then overlook in our business when we're so busy.

Over a series of episodes we've been breaking down the six layers of the referral strategy. The first two layers are plans you need to have, the existing referral source plan and the potential referral source plan. The other 4 layers are language tactics, tools in your toolbox you need for specific moments to help you generate referrals and create more referral sources. In this episode we break down two of the language tactics... language tactics for prospects who are referred and language tactics for prospects not referred.  When dealing with prospects , the language tactic I want you to master is how and when to plant referral seeds during the buyer's journey.

So in the last episode (#144), I went on a rant talking about how we should be caring for our referral sources, not testing them. If you missed it, well, I encourage you to go listen to it.  Because this week's episode is a discussion with my buddy Jordan Ostroff based on the previous episode.  Let's just say it all started with a LinkedIn post by Jordan about referrals in which someone (who will remain nameless) commented on how we're to handle and treat our referral sources. That perspective was to test them for the win-win, test their follow through or time management skills to see if they are worthy of your time.  As you can imagine, I fell on the other side of, completely against this perspective. So after my soapbox in episode #144, I thought it would be good to have Jordan come on as we discuss that LinkedIn post.

Even today - in 2021 - there is something very wrong with how referrals are discussed, handled and taught.  There is a dangerous mindset out there that is doing damage to what I call the "collective referral mindset."  The collective referral mindset is how we - collectively - think about referrals.  The mindset has been dominated by one thought for decades.  You guessed it, the asking for referrals advice.  But lately I'm seeing another type of mindset move into focus that is an off-shoot from the "asking" advice. Join me as I dig in.  By the way - soapbox alert, consider yourself warned.

And by serious, I mean they start doing the work and then specific questions pop up.  We're tackling those questions.

Our deep dive into referrals by specific industries continues and we move from the "selling of real estate" to the "home of real estate". This week we dive into a question that architects, interior designers, decorators, and others are dealing with COVID continues. The question is how to get new referrals from clients during a time when people have drastically reduced or transformed their socializing routines for an industry reliant on local networking/connections to make "organic" referrals happen?

Resources mentioned can be found on the show notes page at www.staceybrownrandall.com/122.

For this 4-part series we are starting on the podcast, I am answering common questions I receive about referrals that are specific to different industries. These aren't the general questions I receive - like how do I get started, how does it work to receive referrals without asking, how to be consistent, how to track, etc.  But specific questions that pop up once someone has decided to get serious about generating referrals without asking.

I've broken down the industries so I can cover specific questions that matter to that industry. Though I think you'll learn a lot from each industry episode! Up first with this episode is the real estate market... specifically the "selling of real estate" with real estate agents, home stagers and mortgage brokers.

Challenging isn't the right word. It doesn't seem to accurately describe the juggling act that parents - who are working - are attempting to manage with kids schooling from home.

And the younger the kid(s), the increase of crazy. Plus stress.  So we're looking at two sides of "Working While Schooling" coin.

This episode - we're looking at tips to help kids thrive. So I brought in an education consultant to show us the way.

We are on to Referral No-No #4.  This is another one I discuss when I teach why you have to think about your referral strategy and generation differently. Does who you are impact the referrals you receive or is there something more important that impacts the referrals you deserve? Many believe it is our personality that impacts if we receive referrals or not. But in reality it is something entirely different.  So whether you are an introvert, extrovert, reserved or highly outgoing, you personality is irrelevant to receiving referrals.  But one thing will dictate your success.

First what is a CX and RX? Second how are they different and should I really care?  See how well I know you!  It's like I'm in your head reading your mind.  Well in this episode we are defining CX and RX and I'm sharing how they are different and why you should care.  I have noticed with my Growth By Referral members and those I teach from the stage... the CX and RX is easily confused which means we don't execute on our referral plan correctly. CX is our Client Experience and RX is our Referral Experience and the are very different.

A critical step in the process to receive more referrals and receive them more consistently is to nail the thank you card you send to the person who sent you the referral. In this episode I share all of the details. The type of card (yes, you have options), what to say (there are 3 objectives to what you write), who writes it and when to send it.

People who are trying to generate referrals consistently in their business seem to make the same rookie mistakes.  And rookie mistakes can be made no matter how long you have been in business. I know business owners in business 5, 10 or more years STILL making these mistakes.  For this episode, we are diving in to 4 rookie mistakes I see people make that can be easily solved.  We are going to discuss the mistakes and what to do instead.  Now, these aren’t the only mistakes people make – oh lordy there are more – but these are 4 no one should be making.

Next question is from an interior designer who wants to know how to start receiving referrals from her referral sources that she has neglected in the past.  And our final question is from a financial services professional who wanted to know how to generate referrals from associations and not just clients.

You’ve heard the business advice before – "you’ve got to spend money to make money." So a legit question you may be thinking is how much you should expect to spend to generate referrals?  And it's a good question which we dive into in this episode, specifically what you don't need, what you can't do and what you cannot forget.  Following these three pieces of advice you can build a referral generating plan on a shoestring budget.

When I talk about your referral plan... most believe it must be complicated, complex and cost a lot of money. And yes, you can make it that way. But why? A referral generating plan should be simple and you can build one with a shoestring budget.

What I teach from the stage, in my book, in these podcast episodes, in my articles and videos is that you need to create a referral experience for your referral sources. But to be able to execute on that referral experience, you – the busy business owner or professional – need to take that referral experience and make it a process you can follow consistently.

In this episode I explain 3 variables that impact your referral experience if you don't have a plan and process to follow. And if you want consistent referrals – year after year – then you need a plan and process you follow year after year.

This episode includes some "future pacing" so if you don't have a referral process you are following... that's okay.  After this episode you will be better prepared when you do have a referral plan and process.

Do you know what a referral really is? It's true definition - its two unique parts that separate it from other lead generation terms.  And more importantly, do you know when you've actually received one? Unfortunately we commonly confuse other lead generation terms or sales lingo as referrals which dilutes the definition of a referral.
