Awake Us Now is a body of believers who: WORSHIP the Triune God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. Praise Him with joy and thanksgiving for He is God and He is good; WALK by faith in the power of the Holy Spirit. This is the clear teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ and the clear declaration of the Scriptures. Such a daily walk is a far cry from mere religion or "church as usual;" WITNESS to Jesus Christ our Savior in daily life situations. Take seriously His call to make disciples. Be alert to the opportunities God provides to encourage and mentor others in the Christian life. Utilize the developing technologies to reach a new generation with the timeless Gospel of Christ.
This series looks for answers to some of the most common, pressing and most difficult questions that are heard today.
The question for this video: “Is Jesus the only way to God?” This question comes from supporters of Jesus, from seekers looking for truth, and from skeptics.
Pastor will approach this question with the desire to be: ⁃ Biblically Accurate: tell what the Bible actually says ⁃ Rationally Defensible: and why what the Bible says makes sense
Many times our question, “Is Jesus the only way to God? Starts with this question, “Didn’t Christians invent the claim that Jesus is the only way to God?”
So let’s address this first. No, we didn’t invent this - Jesus did, He’s the one that made the claim.
John 14:6 we read: “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one come to the Father except through me.’”
Luke 19:10 - He came to save the lost Matthew 20 - He came to give His life for us Mark 10 - He is the ransom payment
Biblical Narrative - Creation - The story of creation - God made all things by His Word and God gave man 1 choice…. - The Fall into sin - man broke the relationship with God, others, nature and self. - Promise of a deliverer, the Messiah, Jesus. - Provision through God’s Grace - We are saved by the mercy of God not by our actions. God provided His Son as the Sacrifice for the sin, the shedding of blood and death on the cross - Fulfillment was found in the coming of Jesus into the world, who lived the perfect life, willingly went to the cross for the sins of all. For my sins and your sins, it’s personal. See John 3:16.
Our sin has separated us from God and what we need is a sacrificial victim who lays down his life for all and Jesus, the Son of God, gives His life for all. He pays the price for our sin.
Acts 4:12 “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
1 Timothy 2:5-6 “For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people.”
1 John 5:13 “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may now that you have eternal life.”
Eternal life is a gift offered through the shed blood, suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus. That is the clear teaching of the Bible. It is biblical accurate and rationally defensible.
The final question: “Whom will YOU believe?”
When one looks at other religions outside Christianity, our to other leaders that people follow, they were and are mortal. There is only one who is immortal. Only one has conquered death through His resurrection. There’s only one who is alive. And that is Jesus.
This is the fork in the road… Who will you listen to. The dead ones or The Living One?
Jesus is alive forever more and He will return. Without Him there is no hope. With Him we have everlasting life and that is the Gospel truth!

When the Israelites disobeyed God at Mt. Sinai and tried making their own gods and rules , the results were deadly. The willingness of Moses to plead with God for mercy, even to the point of taking God's punishment on himself (Exodus 32:31) serves as a picture of our Lord, Jesus Christ, who gave His life as atonement for the sins of all. We learn of God’s faithfulness to us in spite of our unfaithfulness to Him as we look at the continuation of the Exodus story. Exodus 32 is a study of what happens when people break away from the Word of God.
The Gospel of John Week 15 Scripture: John 10:34-11:53, Psalm 82.
John wrote his Gospel to make us understand that Jesus is just who He says He is. Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God and this Gospel of John. When we read it with open eyes and ears and minds, we see and understand who Jesus is.
As our text opens today, we see the religious leaders again trying to trap Jesus and seize Him. Killing Him is their goal. We read again that He escapes, but not because He is afraid, but because the time has not yet come. When the time does come, Jesus will be absolutely fearless. We will see this developing as we move into chapter 11.
As we enter chapter 11, Pastor shares some of the more recent archaeological discoveries in the area of the Jordan River Valley. Pastor shares the possible discovery of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and the interesting information we learn from this discovery.
As we begin chapter 11 we hear that Lazarus, who lives in Bethany is sick. Jesus is about 20 miles from Bethany and is across the Jordan River on the opposite side.
Lazarus has two sisters, Mary and Martha. Pastor does some speculating about Mary. He shares that both early and late in Jesus’ ministry a woman anoints His feet and wipes them with her hair. In the first anointing Jesus tells the woman her sins are forgiven. Pastor poses the possibility that both anointing were done by Mary, Lazarus’ sister, and he goes further with the possibility that Mary of Bethany (Lazarus’ sister) may also be Mary Magdalene (the one from whom Jesus cast out seven demons.)
Back to our story… Jesus is about 20 miles away when He receives word of Lazarus’ sickness from a messenger sent by Mary and Martha. When Jesus hears Lazarus is sick He says that the sickness is not going to end in death, but in the glory of God. Jesus does not head to Bethany yet.
By the time Jesus does finally head to Bethany Lazarus is dead and when He arrives Lazarus has already been in the tomb four days.
Martha greets Jesus as He arrives. Jesus says to Martha that He is the Resurrection and the Life and that the one who believes in Him will live even though they die and that whoever lives by believing in Him will never die. Then He asks Martha, “Do you believer this?” And she replies with a statement of faith that He is the Messiah and the Son of God.
Then Jesus asks Martha to send Mary to Him. Mary comes and falls at Jesus feet saying that had He been there her brother would not have died.
Reminder: Jesus had said to the messenger that had come to tell Him of Lazarus’ sickness, that Lazarus’ illness would not end in death, but it did…… and Mary weeps. Jesus asks where Lazarus has been laid and He weeps too. Jesus understands our sorrows. Then Jesus asks them to open the tomb and though reluctant as the body has been dead four days, they move the stone.
Pastor talks about the process of a Jewish burial in the days of Jesus and also shares pictures and information on ossuaries that have been discovered.
Back to our story…. Jesus says for them to roll the stone away, and adds, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?”
The stone is rolled away - Jesus prays to the Father - then He says, “Lazarus, come out!” And Lazarus comes out of the tomb alive and covered in the linen burial wrappings.
The wrappings are removed and many believed in Jesus after seeing this - others went to the religious leaders and told them what Jesus had just done. Now their desire to get rid of Jesus rises even more. Caiaphas then says, “isn’t it better for one man to die for the people, than that the whole nation perish” and Caiaphas unknowingly speaks a prophetic word. And from that day on the religious leaders plotted to kill Jesus.
We begin to see Jesus set His own execution into motion. This is not something that happens by accident, it is the Father’s will and it is something Jesus runs toward. He willingly sets Himself in this position the leads to His death and ends with His resurrection!
In today’s study we see there is a great difference between religion and a relationship with the Living God.

⁃ The Gospel of John study is part five of five of our Two Year Study of the Gospels. ⁃ The Gospel of John may be one of the most powerful books ever written. Many people have come to faith after reading only this book of the Bible. Scholarly and archeological discoveries in recent decades give us new insight on details in the Gospel of John. We can now understand it as the most Jewish rather than the most “Gentile/Greek” of the Gospels, and when we do that we see many things that we missed before.
Our 2 year study of the gospels is great for large group, small group or home group study and can be started at any time!
Scripture: Revelation 12:11, Romans 9:10, Acts 21-26.
Pastor opens and closes today’s teaching with Revelation 12:11 and everything in-between these bookends focuses on the goodness of God through Jesus and the power and impact of our testimonies. Here’s Revelation 12:11, “They triumphed over him (the enemy) by the blood of the Lamb (Christ Jesus) and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.”
Testimony - What’s your testimony? The Bible teaches if we confess Jesus is Lord with our mouth and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead we will be saved. (Romans 9:10)
Let’s learn from Paul - Paul continually was sharing his testimony of what Jesus had done in his life.
In today’s chapters of Acts we follow Paul as he gives his testimony to: An angry crowd at the temple in Jerusalem The Jewish high counsel in Jerusalem The Jewish high counsel in Caesarea The Roman governor Felix The Roman governor Festus The Jewish King Agrippa and his Sister Princess Bernice
Paul’s testimony: He shares how he lived as a Pharisee and opposed the teaching of Jesus, and on the authority of the chief priests imprisoned those believing in Jesus and supported many being put to death. But then his story changes as he tells of being on the Damascus Road when a bright light blinded him and a voice from heaven spoke to him saying, “I am Jesus, who you are persecuting.”
God broke into Paul’s life and Jesus told him, “I am sending you to them (the Gentiles) to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’ (Acts 26:17b-18)
As Paul goes on with his testimony he shares how God had helped him share the Gospel message of Jesus’ suffering, death, resurrection, ascension and return. Jesus is the Light to all. In Him alone is life forever and forgiveness.
Paul’s personal testimony shared over and over and over again is an encouraging example for us to do the same.
Personal Testimony - it is something we want to share - a declaration of what God has done in our own lives. Like Paul, our testimonies impact the lives of those we share it with.

In closing, Pastor encourages us to be bold with our own testimonies and to watch what God can do as we overcome the enemy through the blood of the Lamb (Jesus Christ) and the word of our testimonies. (Revelation 12:11)

This teaching compares non-Christian writings of Tacitus, Josephus, Suetonius and Pliny from the first and second centuries to the New Testament writings. The evidence is clear and calls us to recognize we are sinners in need of a Savior, The Living One!
Luke 10:38-42; the story of Lazarus’ sisters, Mary and Martha.
It's easy to feel overwhelmed by tasks and activities, but Jesus says that what really matters, what really lasts, is knowing Him and listening to Him.
Jesus came to the village of Bethany where Mary, Martha and Lazarus lived. Martha invited Jesus and those with Him into their home. As Jesus taught them, Mary sat at his feet listening to what he said.
Observation: Every time Mary is mentioned in the Bible she is at Jesus’ feet.
Mary longed to be near Jesus and to listen to His voice and to internalize His goodness, His mercy and His love. At Jesus’ feet listening is where we want to be, too. Sitting at His feet listening closely to what He’s saying develops our relationship with Him.
Do we desire to be at Jesus’ feet? Are we ready to hear what He has to say to us and how He longs to pour into us His love, mercy and goodness and how He longs to give us guidance and direction.
Martha was distracted by the preparations that needed to be made for having guests in the house and she said to Jesus, “Lord, don’t You care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
Many look at this story and condemn Martha - but Martha is a devout believer and she makes one of the most powerful declarations of Jesus’ identity found in the gospels. In John 11:27 she says, “Lord, I believe You are the Messiah, the Son of God who has come into the world.” Martha understood that Jesus is the fulfillment of everything the prophets foretold.
Yet we can learn from Martha: she is upset and angry. Have you ever been in Martha’s spot? She goes to Jesus, not her sister.
Martha is obviously an outspoken person. There is nothing wrong with being outspoken. But what matters most is speaking ONLY what God would have us speak.
Even with Martha’s words to Jesus about her sister, Jesus responds kindly: “Martha, Martha, You are worried about many things, but few things are needed - indeed only one. Mary has chosen better and it will not be taken from her.”
There’s no rebuke here, but Jesus does go to the heart of the issue and the issue is Martha’s heart. She wanted to be a good hostess but that wasn’t the most important thing. The most important thing was listening to Jesus and getting to know Him even more.
Observation: What matters is knowing Jesus and listening to Him.
It’s not about how much we’ve achieved, how much we’ve accomplished. It’s not about how well organized we are, how busy we have been and not about how successful we are. What matters is knowing Jesus and listening to Him.
John 10:14 Jesus says, “My sheep know Me.”
John 10”27-28 “My sheep listen to My voice, they follow Me. No one will take them from Me.”
It is one thing to know what Jesus did, but it’s another thing to believe He did it for me. That’s true faith!
It’s easy to become distracted with things that have no abiding value or to concentrate on things that are important but not paramount. What the Bible tells us is above all else seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness and everything else will be given.
The story of Mary and Martha gives us a real life picture of listening to Jesus and getting to know Him and putting that into practice. Jesus desires ALL of us to have a close enduring relationship with Him.
Are we working on our relationship with Jesus?
Are we spending time in His presence or is he an after-thought? Are we receiving what He wants to give us or are we like Martha and upset about so many other things?
Pastor shares a book reference: “God’s Favorite Place On Earth” by Frank Viola. The book addresses the difficulties of life and addresses when we feel betrayed by people and how God allows these times so that He can strengthen and mold us and to teach us to rely on Him as never before.
Another point the author makes in the book is admitting he was often like Martha busy trying to get things done, but he says, “I learned how to work for God. Then I learned how to work with God. Finally, I learned how to watch God work!” Frank Viola
This story teaches us that life’s not about being busy for God and life’s not about learning ABOUT Him. It’s actually about knowing Him personally, it’s about watching Him move in powerful ways as we sit at His feet. It’s the best place to be!!!

This teaching is from Matthew 24:29-39
We continue our study of Jesus’ Mount Olivet Discourse with the verses in Matthew 24: 29-30 with the return of Jesus “coming on the clouds”* in power and glory. Coming on the clouds is referenced in Revelation 1:7 “Look, he is coming with the clouds,” and “every eye will see him…” (There will be no doubt when Jesus returns!!)
Coming on the clouds is also referenced in Daniel 7:13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven.”*
As people begin to understand what Jesus is saying they will realize that what is written in the Old Testament refers to Jesus!
Pastor circles back to some words from last week’s teaching and shares further about the “abomination that causes desolation.” Matthew 24:15 ““So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand.“
We take a look at some events that could be considered the abomination that causes desolation. • Antiochus Epiphanes (167BC) This event would probably have come into the disciples minds when Jesus said abomination that causes desolation. This Syrian king conquered Jerusalem and desecrated the temple by building an altar to zeus and sacrificing pigs on it. This lead to a great revolt by the Maccabees who threw out the Syrians and cleaned the temple. • Gaius Caligula (40AD) ordered a statue of himself to be set up in the temple at Jerusalem but before it could be done Gaius died. • Zealots in Winter (67/68 AD) during this revolt against Rome, zealots took over the temple and used it as their headquarters. • The Romans siege (70AD) when the temple and Jerusalem were destroyed (discussed last week). These all either were or could be the abomination that causes desolation.
As we see in the Bible there are repeated themes and events: -God’s people turn away from Him -judgement comes -God intervenes to save His people -His people rejoice -then they turn away from Him -God steps in to save His people -His people rejoice -then they turn away from Him -it brings judgement on them -then He rescues them
With this repeating theme we see that there could also be a • Future Event (? AD) and the reader will also still need to “understand” what Jesus is talking about.
Matthew 24:31-33 We are tasked to learn the lesson that as we see all these signs of the times that Christ’s return is ever nearer.
He is coming soon!
As we continue with our reading of today’s verses we read that no one knows the day and hour of Jesus’ return. As in Noah’s day when people were eating and drinking and knew nothing until the flood came, so it will be when Christ returns - many will be found unprepared.
SO THEREFORE BE AWAKE AND READY FOR CHRIST’S RETURN!

Luke 1:1-25.
Today we begin a study of the Gospel of Luke with a look at Zechariah who was a devout man who thought he was prepared to meet the Living God - but reacted with fear and doubt when God showed up. God graciously gave him a second chance to respond with faith, and extends that same grace to us when we falter and fail. This story of Zechariah is a story that still speaks to us today.
There are lessons to learn from this story - All scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correction and training in righteousness so that we can be thoroughly equipped for every good work. - God wants us to KNOW HIM not just know about him. - When we read the scriptures God desires that we not only look at it and say, “what happened?” He desires that we look at the story and say, “What does this say to me today?”
In examining what this story has to do with us today, we start by going through what we know about Zechariah: 1. He was a devout priest 2. He was praying 3. He knew this was from God 4. He knew the Scriptures
As Zechariah was met by the angel of the Lord as he did the priestly duties that day, when He actually had an encounter with the Angel of the Lord he had a difficult time accepting what he was told. At the root of his doubt was Zechariah’s desire to have God fit into his personal perception of who God was and how God should talk to him and what God should do. Basically, Zechariah wanted to make God conform to what he desired rather than allowing God to be who He is and to speak directly into his life.
What God desires to do is reveal Himself to us, rather than have us go along with our own personal perception of Him. We try to put God into a box, like Zechariah did, and to contain God, but God says, “NO!” And He reveals His true self to us. He reveals who He is.
God desires we come to Him in humility, repentant in spirit and willing to receive what He gives and that means that we accept one of the most important truths that anyone can know and act on and that is: - God is god and we are not - God is god and I am not
God is: Supernatural All powerful Present everywhere And when He speaks he means it! His Word is true and it can be trusted!
We have been made in the image of a Holy God and we owe Him everything: - My life - My future - My family - My wealth - My daily activities
We must not underestimate God. Zechariah heard great news that day from the angel and he just could not accept what God was saying. Zechariah made one of the biggest mistakes of his life and underestimated God. He said, “How can this be?” Because in his mind it just did not seem possible. BUT with God NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE!
Divine Promises brought to Zechariah by the Angel of the Lord: - Fear not! - Answered prayers - Good News of joy - Holy Spirit outpouring - Repentance and return - Power - Awakening
Zechariah thought he was too old to receive what the Lord was giving him, but we are NEVER too old for any of the good things of God!!!
God seeks to build a trusting faith in each of us that causes us to acknowledge, “I am the Lord’s servant and I will do what He says.”
Zechariah missed the boat that day, but God still came through and He took Zechariah’s doubts and reluctance and He brought it all about for His glory and Zechariah's good.
God is faithful. He keeps His Word!

God’s word teaches endurance: how to face the difficulties and challenges of life. The Bible doesn’t tell us we will get through life without difficult days and trials. God’s Word gives us encouragement because God’s word is true, it is genuine and it speaks directly into our lives.
Paul at Corinth is a story that shows us how God gives His children encouragement even in the most difficult of times, difficult of places and the most trying of circumstances.
Paul went on missionary journey to Corinth (in Greece) a very corrupt seaport city. They had a temple to Aphrodites and Paul found himself very discouraged at the evil he found there. But God brings encouragement in a way that teaches us to see the ways that God ministers to us in the darkest of days.
Observations: Provision: Paul meets Aquila and Priscilla - God provides as he brings people into our lives who will minister and encourage us. Support: Silas and Timothy - God’s support through colleagues that helped Paul be able to devote full time effort into preaching the Gospel. Opportunity: Jews from the synagogue didn’t want Paul teaching any longer in the synagogue, so Paul went to a man’s house next door to the synagogue and there he preached the gospel to the gentiles. Even in the difficulty of being rejected by the Jewish community, God gave Paul an opportunity to teach Gentiles. Assurance: Corinth was a difficult city to share the Gospel, but Jesus speaks by a vision to Paul, saying, “Do not be afraid - Keep on speaking, do not be silent. For I am with you and no one is going to attack or harm you because I have many people in this city.” God says this to you and me as well, “Don’t give up because I am with you!” So Paul stayed in Corinth a year and a half teaching them the Word of God. Protection: There is dissension between the Jews going to synagogue and the Jews and Gentiles that believed in Jesus as the Messiah. Consequently, after teaching for 1 1/2 years, Paul was arrested and charged with the crime of practicing an illegal cult. They wanted him imprisoned or killed. But Gallia - the court judge - says the one bringing Paul to trial needed to figure things out on their own and that he would not rule on the charges, nor would he punish Paul and Gallia dismissed the case. God knows how to deliver His people! He did it for us at the cross! And the final victory is now ours. We win!
Surprise!: Surprisingly, following the dismissal of the case against Paul, the Jews from the synagogue attack the synagogue leader and beat him up instead of Paul! God’s additional surprise is that in 1 Corinthians 1:1 we read that this synagogue leader, Sethenese, becomes a believer in Jesus and part of the house church in Corinth.
And God has surprises for us in the difficult times, too, because our God is a good and gracious God. He loves His children. He is always with us in difficult times and easy times. He brings joy and hope, endurance and assurance to those who call on Jesus, the Messiah, our Savior!

This week Pastor continues to explore locations of biblical history as we go over the location of the exodus. The exodus is at the heart not only of the Old Testament Scriptures, but also the New. The exodus story of the passover lamb foreshadows our Passover Lamb, Jesus Christ. The exodus is a story of God working in history and in these last days our God is pulling out all the stops to call us back to Himself. As God broke into their lives in the story of the exodus, our God continues to break into our lives today. Pastor continues with this truth: “God’s Word is for my generation!”
This teaching is on Acts 14:8-22, “Incident in Lystra,” and is an account on idol worshipers. We are living in a time of great idolatry and how do we as followers of Jesus respond, react, and live?
In today’s story, Paul is teaching about Jesus in the town square of Lystra and sees a man lame from birth, but Paul also sees the man has great faith and Paul says, “Stand Up and Walk” and the man is healed.
While this story is nearly 2,000 years old, God has not changed and God still moves in remarkable ways. So let’s take note of the following OBSERVATIONS FROM THE STORY:
- The Power of the Messiah - the power of faith in Jesus. We see the testimony that All Authority has been given to Jesus the Messiah and in His name this man was healed and God still heals today. 2. Inherently Religious Nature - human beings are inherently religious, longing for a power higher than themselves, a need. People find something to worship in their lives because we need purpose. We look for meaning for our lives in someone, something or in ourselves - a need to find something for our focus. 3. Created to Worship - We long for things greater than ourselves or things that matter most in our lives. People worship many deities today - we think we’ve outgrown idols, but we worship what those very idols of old represented: power, money, sports, sex, politics, living for things. How does a follower of Jesus respond to these, how do we deal with the pull of idolatry? Do we turn away? Engage? Do we demonstrate by our actions and words the power of God in our lives and do we worship Him alone? 4. Living God is Creator - at this time in history there is more evidence for the existence of our Creator than ever and that evidence points to the existence of God! Do we point people to the Living God, our Creator, and help them see we are created? This is a springboard to sharing the message of Jesus Christ. Without Jesus people are lost forever. 5. Gospel Proclamation - Paul was stoned and left for dead. He left Lystra and headed to Derba. However, he returned to Lystra to share the good news of Jesus because he had a passion to share Jesus and had compassion for the lost to know Jesus as their Savior. 6. Reality of Hardship - Paul and Barnabus knew there would be difficult times, but they held to the truth of God’s assurance that He will take even the difficult times and turn them around for His glory and our good. It can be hard to be a follower of Jesus, but it is worth it.
And this Lystra story continues in a later chapter of Acts... In Chapter 16 we meet Timothy - a man Paul meets on his return trip to Lystra. God uses, to His glory, all that Paul suffered in Lystra the first time, as we see Paul become a spiritual father to Timothy. We learn more about Timothy later in Acts.
Today, many are blinded by idolatry and have lost sight of the Living God (who delivers us through Jesus His Son) so it’s important for us to practice what we learn from early missionaries as we share Jesus and honor, worship and serve the Living God.

An antidote is a remedy for countering the affects of poison. Pastor shares Truth #20: “It all begins and ends in a garden,” and digs into freedom, the power of Jesus, and the power of God’s Word to deliver us from bondage to sin, death and the devil!
It all begins and ends in a garden. The fall into temptation, sin, and death began in the Garden of Eden with our first parents. But the antidote to the deadly poison of sin and death also took place in a garden, on the day when Jesus rose in triumph from His tomb. "At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb ... they laid Jesus there." John 19:41-42
As pastor takes a look at the word “Christian,” its definition, what it means for us and for the world today, we will see a blueprint God has laid out for believers not just in Antioch long ago but also for us today!
The word “Christian” came about from non-believers in the city of Antioch. As persecution caused the Jewish believers in Jerusalem to seek other cities in which to live, many chose to move to Antioch. It was a welcoming city without persecution and the message of Jesus exploded. It was then that Barnabus was sent to encourage these new believers.
Barnabus, led by the Holy Spirit, taught these new believers to HOLD FAST to... 1. God’s grace - Barnabus shared the truth of what Jesus did on the cross. In our crazy world it’s important for us to hold fast to God’s grace too, and not allow the enemy to confuse us.

Solid instruction - Barnabus and Paul worked to impress the truths of the God onto the hearts of believers, instructing them on how to apply God’s truths in their lives and in their hearts. They encouraged them to continue to mature in their faith and to live God-pleasing lives. In our culture, applying God’s truths is becoming increasingly confused and corrupt, so it is vital that believers today understand what God desires and what He says, not what is culturally acceptable. Solid instruction and time in the Bible are key.

Christian = Disciple - It was here in Antioch that the word “Christian” was first used. It was used by non believers to describe those who wouldn’t stop talking about Jesus. The literal translation is “Christ-ers.” Christian only appears 3 times in the Bible but Disciple, Jesus’ favorite word for His followers, is mentioned over 200 times in the New Testament. “Followers of The Way (Jesus)” were referred to as Christians - Disciples. Being Jesus’ disciple is what God still desires today. He does not want people to simply believe He exists - He wants individuals who willingly follow Him, know the Father, to be filled with the Holy Spirit, walk faithfully, and to seek to demonstrate what Jesus taught.

Prophetic gifts - God also desires that we use the gifts of the Holy Spirit, especially the gift of strengthening and encouraging and comforting others. God desires that we earnestly desire the gifts of the Holy Spirit that enable us to carry out the His work.

Holy Spirit - The Spirit of God gives insight to what the Lord desires - and the Holy Spirit helps us follow where God leads.
What started in Jerusalem with Jews coming to know Jesus as their Messiah, spread to Antioch when persecution moved the “Followers of the Way” to this city. From there, Antioch became the hub of evangelism to the world through the power of the Holy Spirit. These believers relied on the Spirit of God and we too are to rely on the Holy Sprit, like them, to bring us:
Understanding Conviction Comfort Guidance Insight Direction And to lead us to faith to win the world for Christ.
The Hold Fast Antioch blueprint of Barnabus and Paul is still the blueprint God desires for us to use today. He says for us to Hold Fast to these truths:
That we live in the Grace found at the cross. That we soak up solid instruction so that we might be filled with an understanding of God’s will and His word. That as Disciples we talk about Jesus all the time and live for Jesus and follow Jesus. That we seek God’s prophetic gifts so that we are able to share what God is revealing to the world. That we keep on being filled with the Holy Spirit.

This teaching is taken from the Acts 10, the story of Peter and Cornelius the Centurion. Both Peter and Cornelius experienced divine encounters through visions. Cornelius sees an angel with a message, Cornelius obeys and has Peter brought to his home.
Peter receives a vision in which God gives Peter eyes to see beyond his cultural rules of clean and unclean. Peter was a prisoner of his culture until God gave him a vision of truth and that breakthrough brings Peter to a Gentile’s home, Cornelius’ home, and Peter, going against the culture, obeys God and enters the house of a Gentile. Barriers were broken as Peter allowed God to broke into his heart. Peter understood that God wants ALL people to know and believe in Him.
Peter shares the gospel story with Cornelius and the people gathered to listen. Before Peter was even finished sharing, the Holy Spirit descended onto the group, just like what had happened to the disciples on Pentecost.
The ministry to the non-Jewish world takes off because God has intervened and God has directed it! God uses Peter (the apostle to the Jewish people) to bring the Gospel message to Cornelius and opens up the message of Jesus the Messiah to the Gentile world!
This story still speaks to us today: 1. Culture or Scripture - am I following my culture or am I following the Scripture? 2. Self or Spirit - will we go with our own plans or will we heed the Spirit of God? 3. Home or World - am I concerned about my own little group, the people I’m comfortable with or will I let God use me to reach all? 4. Works or Gospel - It’s not about how good I am, it’s about how good God is!
Remember: It’s about CHRIST ALONE!
It’s easy to mirror your culture, rather than reflect the teaching of the Living God. God calls us to be faithful and obedient, to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, and thus reflecting the very teachings of Christ.

Week 30 - Mark 15:40 - 16:8 (including 9-20). Death and burial of Jesus; The Resurrection; Women, the first witnesses to the Resurrection. In this study we finish the final chapter of Mark by taking a closer look at the women at the foot of Jesus’ cross when he dies and the women who were on their way to anoint Jesus on Sunday morning and find Him gone and also a look at the woman who was the first to talk with Jesus after His resurrection. This look at these women brings some great insight into who these women were and takes a specific look at Mary of Bethany (Lazarus’ sister) and Mary Magdalene with some exploration into them possibly being the same person. Pastor puts out the lay of the land, where specific houses were located and where the tomb was along with the look at the women and puts together the resurrection story using the accounts of all 4 gospels and unites them into one cohesive reconstruction of the events of Resurrection Sunday. Here’s how Pastor takes Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and puts the pieces together: Scene 1: Very Early Sunday morning 1. Mary Magdalene, Mary (Clopas’ wife) and Salome head to the tomb. 2. They see the open tomb and Mary Magdalene returns to town to tell Peter and John. Scene 2: Early Sunday morning 1. Joanna (& Susanna?) leave Hasmonean Palace for the tomb 2. Meeting Mary (Clopas’ wife) and Salome, they enter tomb and see 2 angels 3. They return to town to tell the others Scene 3: Early Sunday morning 1. Peter and John run to the tomb. Mary Magdalene follows shortly thereafter. 2. Peter & John return home. Mary Magdalene lingers. Sees 2 angels. 3. Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene. (The first eyewitness to see Jesus after His resurrection). Scene 4: Sunday morning 1. Salome and Mary (Clopas’ wife) and others head to tell the other disciples. 2. Jesus meets them on the way. Scene 5: Sunday afternoon/evening 1. Cleopas/Clopas and companion head to Emmaus. 2. Jesus meets them on the way 3. They return to upper room to meet disciples 4. Jesus shows up! The teaching time continues with the story of “Doubting” Thomas. And His words, “My Lord and My God!” Thomas understood that because Jesus was alive, He is who He claimed Himself to be AND He is the One whom the Scriptures claim Him to be: The Son of the Living God come to earth. Pastor ends with the story of Peter being asked 3 times by Jesus if he loves Him, and Peter being commissioned 3 times by Jesus to feed His sheep. Peter willingly committed his heart to Jesus and would willingly go to his death for his faith in Jesus some 30 years later. Peter was sold out for Christ. Will we too be sold out to Christ and follow Him with all our heart, all our soul, all our mind and all our strength? Will we love Him with everything we are? We close out this first of the 4 gospels with Jesus ascending to the Father and letting us know that He is with us always, even until the end of the age. Mark 15:22-39. Roman crucifixion; meaning of INRI; Crucifixion in Old Testament prophecy; Sacrifice of Jesus.
This study is an in depth look at Jesus’ crucifixion on Golgotha (Calvary). Pastor shares pictures of the present area of Golgotha and the archeological discoveries that are happening. He explains the true nature of crucifixion: a most brutal, demeaning, ghastly, immoral, unholy, merciless, humiliating method of execution ever devised.
One of the intentions of crucifixion being carried out in such a public place outside the city wall was so that many could see and the goal was to fill people/onlookers with fear. But we read in 1 John 4:18 “...perfect love drives out fear...” This verse shows us the very opposite of the actual intention. What does perfect love look like? Mark chapter 15 lets us know.
Pastor finishes today’s teaching with a look at Jesus’ final words and describes the tearing of the curtain in great detail that brings a clearer understanding of this piece of the crucifixion story that changes everything in our relationship with God the Father. As today’s study ends the curtains are “torn open” at the moment of Jesus’ death giving full access to the presence of God and bringing the event full circle back around to Mark Chapter 1’s description of the heaven’s being “torn open” at Jesus baptism as The Father speaks, “This is My beloved Son.”
The closing words of the chapter show us a picture of the measure of the Father’s love for us through the sacrifice of His Son, Christ Jesus. And now we, like the Centurion say, “Sure this man was the Son of God!”

God took Paul from being a bulldog for the enemy’s use against those following The Way, Jesus, but Jesus turned Paul into one of His sheep in His flock for His use in sharing the Gospel. God used Paul’s testimony of Jesus changing his life to reach into the hearts of the people of his day and that testimony is still reaching all the way into our hearts today. Paul’s story testifies to the heart of God to be in relationship with each one us no matter who we are or what we’ve done. God’s arms are open to us all.

God is calling us today to have the faith of Stephen, to follow the Lord Jesus, to be faithful, to love our enemies, to pray for those who persecute us, and to speak God’s truth in love.
Mark 14:1-26. Peter and John were bold witnesses of the power and authority of Jesus. It is in Jesus’ name alone that we find Salvation. Peter and John’s courage in telling others about Jesus astonished others, and the people noted that Peter and John had been with Jesus, eyewitnesses that had spent time with Him. We, too, can spend time with Jesus and get to know Him like Peter and John did.
Mark 13:19-31. The Last Days; Tribulation, Rapture, and the Second Coming; Pre-, Post-, and A-Millennialism; Be Awake! We do not need to fear. Jesus has left us warning so that we will be prepared, filled with the Holy Spirit and trusting in His promises.
In the midst of cultural lunacy, craziness, confusion and deception, how are Christians to live? (Hint: It’s not through a mindset of judgement.) Pastor points us to a heart of devotion and encourages us to submit ourselves to the authority of God’s word, to seek an encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ, to be a people of prayer, to pray for God to open people’s hearts and minds, and to pray for awaking and transformation.

In the last several decades, there has been a pendulum swing. No longer are the majority of Christian, non-Christian, agnostic and atheist theologians and historians viewing the story of Jesus as Biblical theology that was developed gradually over time. Most are now in agreement on 7 key points regarding Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. No longer do they see Jesus’ story as an evolving story. Instead, their attitudes have been transformed by recent historical, archeological and linguistic evidence. The question is: Will you allow the evidence to transform your attitude as well?
Mark 12:1-43. Topics: rejecting Jesus; obey God or the state?; resurrection; the greatest commandment; offerings to God.
Matthew 17:22-18:20. Topics: children of the Living God; kingdom of the Living God; the miracle of the four drachma coin; greatness is based on humility; childlike vs childish; total dependency on God; spiritual growth and maturity; binding and loosing - by speaking that when one comes to faith he/she is forgiven and saved vs. those deciding against God, that it is a decision with eternal consequences; God desires all to come to know Him; His love is great; the warning of being of the world and following the worldly culture; that of following natural instincts vs following the Holy Spirit.
Pentecost is a Jewish holiday (Shavuot, or Feat of Weeks), thanking God for His provision; a festival that gives us understanding of the Bible and also for God’s will and purpose for each of us in our walk with Him. The verses Pastor explores today are a fascinating section of Scripture that hold a mystery around the word "house." Was the place of the first Pentecost in a house, like maybe the Upper Room? Or was it referring to The Temple, the Holy House, the House above all other houses? And why does that make a difference?
In Acts 1:9-11, we read that a cloud came down and covered Jesus as He ascended. Why is this important? Did you know that Jesus promises to return the same way -- on a cloud! A fascinating study on a very fascinating and unique topic.
The story of Jesus is not mere religion! It is life-changing, real and true, and so our lives can never be the same. It is the power of the Holy Spirit that is essential for the Christian life. Jesus will return and the season of His return is NOW. Today’s teaching explores some of Jesus’ last words before he was taken to heaven. These key words: proof, kingdom, Spirit, witness and restoration are words for us today!
Intercede for America as we confessour rational sins. God is a God who is slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love and who is quick to forgive. Pray for healing and restoration of our land and that our hearts areturned. back to Him. Awake U,S.(A.) Now! Come Holy Spirit! Save US! We encourage you to spend time in prayer for America.
It is God's desire that this nation be brought back to Him. He desires that the arm of judgment be withheld from the land. The only way that will take place is for the children of God to cry out to Him and come before Him in prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, interceding for our country. Because only a move of the Holy Spirit, can restore and redeem what is broken.

Today God is saying to His people pray for those in need, understand that God’s Holy Spirit is calling His people to be a people of prayer. One of the things that we have seen over these last months is God telling us to be in prayer. The Holy Spirit has been pleading with us to pray for this land, pray for its leaders, pray for it’s people, that God may bring people back to Him. I am not sharing anything that none of you haven’t already figured out. We are living in very, very difficult and dangerous times and it is absolutely essential that God’s people pray. He is calling us to come before the throne in heaven with prayers for our people, for our leaders, for our country, and for the nations of the world.
When God’s people listen to His voice and come before Him in prayer He hears, He answers, and He responds. I believe He is telling us in this very critical juncture not only in our nations history but in the history of this planet that it is absolutely essential for God’s people, the faithful remnant, to be a people of prayer asking that God would do a mighty work in our day calling people back to Him. Paul says, “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” Now what does it mean to live a peaceful and quiet life in all godliness and holiness? Does that mean that we are supposed to have a nice middle-class lifestyle and be able to sit back and just enjoy our days? No! It means we are praying and coming before the throne of God that opportunities may be given to bring the message of Jesus to the nation and to the world. We are praying that there would be times of peace and refreshing so that people’s hearts would be open to hear the voice of the living God and to respond to what He has done. Just so we know that’s what God has in mind and what the apostle was all about listen to the next two verses. 1 Timothy 2:3-4, Paul says, “This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.” God’s desire is that every man, woman, and child on the face of this planet come to know His love and mercy in Jesus Christ. The Scriptures cry that out. You and I are living in an amazing time. These are such exciting days in every sense of the word. Yes, they are frightening in some ways, but for the person who knows the living God we know He’s got this. We know that in the end God wins and so do we, and therefore, we are not fearful
We are closer than ever before to the fulfillment of the ages, If ever there were a time when God’s people needed to be praying this is it because He desires all people to be saved, and that ought to be not only on our hearts but at the heart of our prayers. This is where our lives are to be focused. Listen to what the apostle says, 1 Timothy 2:5-6, Paul writes and he says, “For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.” If it was the proper time 2000 years ago what time is it now as are watching all of the promises of God unfold before our very eyes? Jesus is not only the Messiah of Israel and the Hope of the nations, He is the only one who can rescue. He is the only one who can save. He is the only one who can renew a life, restore a family, rebuild a broken heart, heal permanently a ruptured soul. He is God. He is good. He is the Redeemer and He listens to the prayers of his children.

The Gospel of Matthew emphasizes Jesus as Israel’s long awaited Messiah. Jesus is the fulfillment of the prophetic promises in God’s Word, the Deliverer, Savior and King. Matthew zeroes in on Jesus’ call to discipleship. Will we heed this call today and commit fully to the King of Kings, the promised Savior of the world? Matthew chose to follow Jesus and Jesus changed Matthew’s life. If we choose to follow Jesus, He will change our lives, too.
Why is the Gospel of Matthew Pastor Dodge's favorite? Why is this Gospel the first book of the New Testament? Jesus changed Matthew's life when Matthew chose to follow Jesus. Jesus still today is calling us to follow Him. If we choose to follow Jesus, He will change our lives just like He did Matthew's.
Pastor Dodge shares an archeological discovery uncovered in the 1980’s that dates back to the early first century. This discovery draws our attention to the Bible’s account of “Jesus Calms the Storm” found in Mark 4:35-41 and speaks to truth #18: “The Lord is near, even in the storm.”
Pastor completes our study of the Book of Ruth this week as we see God work through the details of His plan for Ruth, Naomi and Boaz as chapter 4 closes out. It’s a beautiful story packed with a prophetic picture of Jesus, our Guardian Redeemer.
Synagogues were places for community gatherings and reading of the word, which began to spring up following the destruction of the Temple. Galilee, a place Jesus ministered and taught in, had an abundance of synagogues. Come along as we explore some of them, along with Who the Foundation Stone of our Faith actually is!

“Hypocrite.” This word is used a grand total of seventeen times in the entire New Testament — and Jesus is the only one who uses it. (Hint: He does not have a good opinion of hypocrites!)
