The 2026 VW show season is officially underway, and Bill is gearing up for one of the biggest Volkswagen adventures of the year.
Before heading overseas, Bill will be taking the legendary Type 34 Karmann Ghia "Zorba" to two major events: Luft Zeigen on June 13th and the EMPI 70th Anniversary Celebration on June 20th. From there, the journey continues across the Atlantic to the United Kingdom, where he'll pick up the famous orange Katastrophenschutz Bus and begin an epic European road trip.
The route will take Bill and friends from the UK across the Netherlands and into Germany for the world-famous Hessisch Oldendorf Volkswagen Treffen, one of the most significant vintage VW events on the planet. After Germany, the adventure continues through Europe before arriving in Belgium for the legendary European Bug-In at Chimay, where thousands of air-cooled Volkswagen enthusiasts gather each year.

Super Beetles have long been one of the most misunderstood—and often underappreciated—air-cooled Volkswagens here in the United States. But if you look across the pond, or even dig into certain corners of the hardcore VW scene, the story is completely different.
Built from 1971 to 1977, the Super Beetle was actually Volkswagen's most advanced evolution of the classic Beetle platform. These cars were offered in just two colors, Marathon Blue Metallic or Saturn Yellow, and came from the factory with a unique package that included wider sport wheels, close-ratio steering, Recaro sport seats, a custom sport steering wheel, blacked-out trim, and the signature side racing stripe that made the Sport Bug stand out from the standard Beetle lineup.

"Karma" is the latest ground-breaking creation from Type 1 Restoration — Dennis Troggio's 1955 Lowlight Karmann Ghia that just captured the coveted Al Slonaker Award at the Grand National Roadster Show, the highest honor for non-roadster vehicles at the most prestigious indoor custom car show in the world.
This wasn't their first shot at Slonaker glory.
We get into the second attempt — and how lessons learned from the legendary "Turmoil" split-window Beetle (a build that redefined what was possible in the VW and hot rod world) shaped the philosophy behind Karma. Turmoil raised the bar. Karma shattered it.
The 1955 Lowlight Karmann Ghia is already one of the rarest early production Volkswagens ever built — the very first year of Ghia production. Owner Dennis Troggio was also hands on with this build. But this car goes far beyond restoration. Nearly everything on Karma has been re-engineered, re-imagined, or custom-machined from scratch. The list of untouched parts is shorter than the list of one-off components.
From custom-machined brake rotors carved out of solid cast iron, to intricate mechanical detailing throughout, no surface was overlooked. The interior, crafted by the world-renowned Recovery Room, is a masterclass in craftsmanship and restraint. Power comes from a 300 horsepower, full-race engine built by Doug Gonzales of RevMaster — a monster Type 1 powerplant that proves air-cooled performance belongs on the biggest stage.
Competing against multi-million-dollar customs and elite coach-built machines, Karma didn't just show up — it changed the conversation. This win is proof that when precision engineering meets vision, a Volkswagen can stand toe-to-toe with the best custom cars in the world.

Jake Raby is widely regarded as one of the world's leading experts on the Volkswagen Type 4 engine, with more than 30 years of hands-on experience building, developing, and refining air-cooled Type 4 VW engines. Since the late 1990s, Jake has been deeply involved in Type 4 engine rebuilding, performance development, and long-term reliability testing for platforms used in VW Bus, Porsche 914, and high-performance air-cooled Volkswagen applications.

San Leandro, California—an industrial Bay Area city shaped by its Portuguese community and a deep-rooted Volkswagen culture—holds a story few outside the neighborhood ever knew. Tucked away behind an unassuming fence was a Volkswagen collection unlike anything else in the region. For years, local kids would stop, peer through the slats, and take it all in: early Beetles, split windows, rare convertibles, stacks of glass, and parts that hinted at decades of careful accumulation.
It was a forgotten archive of Volkswagen history—silent, untouched, and unexplained.
Then came the revelation.
The cars belonged to Stuart Alexander, the owner of the Sausage King facility and the man later convicted in one of San Leandro's most infamous criminal cases—the murder of health inspectors at his warehouse. A crime that shocked the community also cast a long shadow over what had once seemed like a harmless automotive mystery.
In the years that followed, the Volkswagen hoard was quietly dismantled. With the help of a volunteer assisting the family, the cars were sold off—often at fair, reasonable prices—and released back into the Volkswagen world. One by one, these forgotten cars reentered the scene, restored, driven, shown, and enjoyed, largely disconnected from the dark chapter that once surrounded them.
In this episode, we Me & John Limnios explore the intersection of true crime and Volkswagen history—how a legendary Bay Area VW stash came to be, how it disappeared, and where those cars may be today. Many of them are still out there, living new lives, their origins unknown to their current owners.

But life changes. Priorities shift. The unthinkable happens—and the car is sold. Watching your first show-winning Volkswagen drive away is a regret that never fully fades.
For decades, the Beetle would resurface in David's life, always just out of reach. Nearly 30 years later, he finally gets the chance to buy it back—only to discover it's far worse than he imagined. Rather than restore what was lost, David makes a bold decision: start over and build something entirely new.
The result is a radically re-imagined 1971 VW Beetle—a modern, hot-rod-inspired machine that stands completely apart from anything else in the Volkswagen world. From extensive paint and bodywork, to chop-top modifications, a full roof conversion, and a cartoon-style window treatment, this build rewrites the rulebook. The hot-rod-meets-custom interior seals the deal as a true one-off.
That risk paid off in a big way. The car was selected Top Five at the VolksWorld Show and went on to land the cover of the November 2025 Volkswagen magazine.

The East Coast of Canada is cold, and the car season is short — usually May through October. New Brunswick isn't known as a hotbed for the air-cooled Volkswagen scene, but when the VW bug bites you out there, you're all in.
Terry grew up in a drag-racing family, and everything changed the day his father gifted him a convertible Karmann Ghia. That single car sparked a lifelong obsession with all things air-cooled VW. From flat-towing a '67 Beetle over 2,000 miles from Alabama, to drag-racing a Herbie-themed bug, to eventually owning the legendary Save-A-Bugcampaigned by Jack Shacettie — Terry's passion has taken him across the continent.
His vacations? They weren't for relaxing — they were spent in Southern California, wrenching in work clothes at Jack's shop just to be part of the action. Now retired from a career in insurance, Terry finally opened a small but official shop in New Brunswick. Not for business — but to help keep his cars and his friends' cars on the road.
Terry's collection tells the story of a life dedicated to Volkswagens:
- "Cinco," his all-original 1955 Beetle, bought with just 25,000 miles.
- A 1955 Kombi running an SO-42 interior setup.
- And his driver — a 1950 split window, restored by Dr. Dick Christiansen, which he puts real miles on.

Brett Hawkbee is a name that's known throughout the UK for creating a legendary bug jam. The largest show in the UK and it's third year it broke all records for any show that was happening in the UK car show specific.

Scott Hopkins hails from Hyrum Gerogia his 1956 oval window is quite unique. The Bay Window Volkswagen Bus — affectionately (and sometimes not so affectionately) known as the Fat Chick, Late Model, Round Window, or Big Boy — covers the iconic 1968–1979 VW Bus era. What does NASA Volkswagens have in common Joe Varga. Known as Carbon Joe on Instagram Joe Vargas spent the last 16 years working on project X 37B with Boeing an unmanned working in Aerospace most of his life gave him a skill set of problem-solving up against just about anything. In the early 2000s of friends brother ask him to make some carbon fiber parts for his friends Drag bug. From then it's been on Joe's first car he still owns to thi this day. And he enjoys driving his super beetle convertible. With the goal of completing a German look ride soon he's totally into it. On this podcast, we talk about a lot about carbon fiber technology what is the difference between vacuum bagged with a clave without a clave auto clave this clave and every other type of clave. Eric Justus grew up in Southern California, the son of a VW enthusiast Bill Justus. Bill was known for putting on some of the VW panic events in the mid 90s. Eric grew up with that as a foundation. Moving onto Street cars he obtained Type 34 ghia he decided he was going to make it a drag car. It was quite infamous in the early days as it was at Carlsbad Raceway quite a bit drag racing and he had that big type three moving pretty quick. After he sold it he took a step back for a little bit to fool around with some hot rods before jumping back into his 1955 window is incredibly detailed really fast. You can tell once you spot the kirkey seats that this thing is all business. We cover quite a few topics and it's more of a Freeform conversation in the middle but it's a great podcast. This is the story of a guy who just wanted his bug restored. Wayne Callahan bought a 1968 Beetle brand new and had that car still to this day after years of it sitting in storage and he wanted to find a good restoration shop. he talked to a few people and ended up taking it down to Type One Restoration in Tempe Arizona. With his mindset, determined to do his bug back to all original, so he could just cruise it around and enjoy it. Things took a turn when Wayne spent a day at the grand national roadster show and saw in one building some of the most iconic Volkswagens ever built. From that moment forward, Wayne knew he needed a really cool hot Rod VW. luckily he picked the right shop to begin with Type One Restorations does some of them sophisticated modifications to Volkswagens that cross platforms with hot rods and Volkswagens and really bridges the gap to build some very unique cars. Buddy & his team over there knocked it completely out of the park they went from a zenith Blue to a custom mix of an Azure blue split window color changing it from a 68 visually to making you question what year it is the custom touches in and out of this Beetle are completely over the top. It was a few year process to get it back but well worth the wait! Now Wayne has his brand new beetle back in his hands and it's cooler and better than anything he's ever had in his life. Talk about the best way to pay tribute and restore, a car that means so much to you. It's a great story and it's an unbelievable car.

You probably have seen one of the videos her most popular is a 500 horse powered Subaru sleeper Bug. That video, her first one has over 10 million views. Since then she's built a Youtube channel where she seeks out unique cars to feature on her show, her motto is "I wanna drive everything". Last week (if you subscribed her channel parentheses which you should), you would've seen Zorba the Ghia featured on Nicole Johnson's Detour. My 1964 type 34 Karmann Ghia. This week we talked to Nicole and get all of her history. She actually raced 1600cc cars at one time. We talk about the process it takes to film the videos the way she looks for cars and trying to build a unique channel on YouTube. Lots of cool talk and if you're interested automotive shows this is a great one to listen to. Nicole also is known for her racing monster trucks for monster jam. She was a driver for the Scooby Doo monster truck. With a long history and rock, crawling, and offloading how she got selected to do that was pretty awesome. Jason Lindquist hales out of the northern California area. He's known for preserving and finding low mileage original Volkswagens, that's his passion. For other people he does restorations and preservations for them as well. Several Volkswagens he's built have been displayed throughout other peoples collections. When it comes to getting down to the details, that's where Jason really comes to the table. His attention to detail and understanding of midyear changes at Volkswagen from seats, seam locations to switches, knobs, heater vents, and all of the details in between he really drills down on the differences year by year and even midyear changes of just about any year of classic Volkswagen on this episode, we geek out a little bit and start splitting hairs on some of the differences in the 60s vehicles in them of thems. One thing I love about the VW world is there's never a dull moment and there's always something new. For example, the Devin this is the first time I've ever seen this car was at a type three rally meet up in front of ISP West that's when I got to meet Reid Kerlin . Reid is the owner of this Devin 295. It's called the Devon 295 because it cost $295 back in the day it was a kit car that was made for multiple different chassis for the ultimate enthusiast that wanted to build their own sports car on this podcast we get into some of the history of the Devin as well as Read's personal history in the VW scene. He's a great guy and this car is even cooler. Like most of us with his life, starting in a Volkswagen that his parents owned and loving the car itself with the pursuit to find something unique. He stumbled across this Devin. It's a very cool car one of the few that has a type three motor in it has a matter fact it's the only one that he knows of the registry is keeping track of some of these, but Bill Devin, who started the company in 1954 wasn't very good at keep records. You could even buy stuff from him up until not long before his passing a true innovator always looking to help the sports car enthusiast DIYer.

Buying a car before he could drive was the best thing that could ever happen to a 14-year-old kid. Hopping on his bike and taking a carburetor to the local German mechanic to get some understanding of how to make things work, changed his life. I met John Benton at the EMPI open house last year. He built a 1641 cc motor with 48 IDs and came in there and ripped it wide open to 7000 RPMs and put out some impressive horsepower numbers 160 hp for a 1641 when I interviewed him he came across as your typical old-school Vw legend. He owns a shop called Benton Performance and he's been busy for the past few decades working on Porsche's 356s 912s and 911s. He's a charismatic guy with a great attitude and a love for classic air cooled cars. His story about how he got an Volkswagens and how that evolved eventually into working on Porsche. I think if you meet him, you definitely know he's a get it done kind of guy but he likes to have fun. If you're ever in Anaheim, look up Benton Peformance, and go check them out.

Pedro Sainz is one of the most obsessed type three builders that there is. Starting with his notchback a chance meeting at the first Nona meeting with Lee Hedges as friends they pushed each other to build their cars as original as possible. From that point forward, Peter was on a mission to restore cars, not only did he restore cars, but he also built roof racks Pedro's roof racks as a matter of fact. Some of those popular wood slat roof racks made in southern California in the early 2000s his first project was razor. The second one was a 1968 automatic type 34. Then he went on to build his Pacific blue 62 which once that early car was complete which is difficult to do end of itself. He looked for something even more difficult. How about if I build a replica of the prototype convertible to an exact specification. His commitment as a builder is unmatched by enthusiast this is not his full-time job. He's a cabinet maker by trade. It's a great story about a skateboarder from Tijuana Mexico, that his love for Volkswagens and his desire to create things with his hands evolved in so many cars and building so many racks for people even on to custom making interior kits that are exact replicas of the original factory. When you talk about playing the game that's Pedro. He's in it until the end.

David Craig is one of those guys that is behind the scenes most of the time. Originally starting as Volkswagen shop bugs for you in grass Valley California. David went on to partner with people like Rich Kimball on some of the early treasure hunts with him. Together they went through Mexico at old VW shops going through vintage inventory bagging it all up and bringing it back to the states. With a background in the garment industry, he started making T-shirts with cool, logos and sayings like endangered species and what's your type 12 or three. Eventually to getting into Battles with Volkswagen legal team he decided it was too big of a risk eventually getting into licensing business and manufacturing products for people with being connected with manufactures overseas. He was able to make lots of cool things that some of those are pretty collectible today it's a cool story to hear from a guy behind the scenes, but it's been responsible for a lot of stuff in the 80s and 90s that you saw or put on your Volkswagen.

Sometimes you meet people that have been in the scene so long that the effect that they've had and the cars they've built ripple on for quite a while. That's the case with Walter Jelinek. Walter started the Bug box in 1994 but his story starts before that. As a kid in Germany, seeing a lot of cool Volkswagens and stumbling across his first Vw trans magazine that got him hooked. Then Walter has been known for constantly doing something unique and different from one of the first original patina cars the Lindy Bus to re-creating a full-size version of the sand scorcher an RC car built by Tamaya in the 80s. He's been recognized in the hobby in Europe for quite a few years. Then onto to build some of the Atwater buses finding three that exist. These were very unique tourist version VW buses that had extended roofs with plexiglass panels. Owning a restoration shop for several years and then finally having to take a break after a few years the scene brought him back, not wanting to have a big shop again. He currently manages and facilitates peoples restorations in his one man shop. He's constantly onto new endeavors, finding challenges that are very difficult with the commitment to quality to make some of the best parts on the market. His page razor skin makes the replacement lower rocker panels for type 34 gears that are almost an exact match. If you want it done right you've got to use the bug box, as now he focuses mainly on original restorations and real unique cars. He still accustomed guy at heart. This is a long one because there's a lot of history here.

Imagine being 18 years old and having your car on the cover of a nationally published magazine. Being one of the first guys from the southeast to get the cover of magazine and to have your girlfriend on that cover as well. Talk about living the dream! That is Tony Hunter's VW story. This weekend coming up is the Vegas world finals drag racing at the Las Vegas motor Speedway. Restoring the oldest type 34 Karmann Ghia. In this month hot VW's December 2024 check out Lee Hedges oldest type 34 Ghia fully restored. It's the 11th Type 34 ever produced. This is the in-depth interview for tons of detail on the uniqueness of an early 1962 type 34 Ghia. The binz all right double cab is kind of a mystery mostly produced from 57 to 59. The first Sales literature shows up as a special order for Volkswagen in 1953. On this podcast we go through the story of the Binz double cab, the purpose that ignited the creation and a lot of the details and history that went along with this pick up truck that was built essentially for two years. Brian Hyerstay G Dragster has a 1680cc engine revs to over 10,000 RPM & has a best ET of 8.43. And thats with NO POWER ADDERS. Brian has been involed n VWs since his first Bug in the early 70's. Since then hes raced his 1962 Beetle that hes owned since then. He then switcehd over to a Manx buggy for drag racing. When he reched the pinnacle of that, he bought a used G-Dragster and started his journey up the ranks of Competition Eliminator. His 1680 CC has custom builr cylinder heads, an overhead cam, fuel injection, all off of a stock case. Hes racked up over 20 Wally's the covedted NHRA award for any racer. Brian is pusing the envelope with this 1680cc engine. He also ha a 1977 348 RWH street beetle in all stock trim. Can you say SLEEPER. Come meet him December 7th at the World Finals in Las Vegas.

The 1980s were a super cool time and show cars. Most of the guys in the scene were in their early 20s and not only did they have a big hand in building their own cars. A lot of guys drove them to the shows and back with full wheels off mirror displays. Cal-dub was no different. Built by Jack Digiacomo painted by Steve Knecht coming out of Bakersfield. These guys were ready to shake up the SoCal Vw scene. And that, they did with lots of battles out there in the show circuit. This story is about cal-dub the car built by Jack Jack Digiacomo Sen, sold during life changes and re-purchased by his son some 20 years later. The next time the car debuts at the Grand National Roadster Show where I originally did this interview with father and son and Steve Knecht which that original podcast is lost in Mexico.
Fastforward to 2024 One crazy weekend, we were all reunited again where we could record that podcast over also displaying three cars all painted by Steve connect and two he built. We discussed the Bakersfield days and what it was like during competitions. A great story about how these cars sometimes mean more than just steal, glass, and rubber.

A fviral Video from a podcast called west of Tulsa had a guest Peter Kappen He spoke about a guy Blase Mcfadden who claimed to have the orignal Inch Pincher. This podcast takes on a wild ride as to who exactly blaze McFadden was as well as the history of the inch pincher years and dates when things happen modifications took place to try to validate whether this is the actual inch pincher or not or something totally different. The VW hobby is filled with so many different intricacies with respect to, the trails, the different cars and people took and this is no different. Sometimes steering is the craziest thing to deal with on your vintage bus. Rusty, who hail out of the Netherlands, decided to help some friends, modify their buses and install some rack and pinion set ups. From that became a business. Since then he sold over 100 rack and pinion bus steering set ups. We get into the details of what makes the difference between a warm drive and rack and pinion steering. Tony Viera hails from San Jose, California. His connection with Volkswagens started at an early age working at a speed shop (Goodies speed shop) and thinking they were cool. He built a Manx he saw those cars being so cool. He opened up a business by the name of Meg's house. After a few years moved on and partnered in a company called Bugformance and Sunnyvale, California. His history starts in the 60, late 70s with Volkswagens. Being an exclusive Manx dealer for a few years as well as the "thunder bug" buggy. He dabbled and off-road racing in the early days. Even racing at the old Stardust raceway here in Las Vegas in 1968. He's got a lot of great stories from the early days of, the dune buggy craze Volkswagens and customizing those cars which eventually evolved into more than this. It's a great story with lots of history.

After my podcast last week talking about a Myers Manx that I was posting up for sale I got an inbox message from Kenny Nash. Kenny referred me to his body Todd Cooper, who had a really great story on finding an all original one owner Max in the basement of a house in Virginia. When he tried to buy it from the original owner, it was a no sale. Things changed when the owner passed away. He left his good friend in charge of all the cars, but the buggy was supposed to go to an ex-girlfriend as luck would have it, Todd ends up with the car. It's a wild story and a cool project.
Also, we follow up on Bill getting flamed on a Face classified for Myers Manx Cars. When he post his 1969 titled series one makes up for sale. Bill has no problem getting attacked by the gatekeepers. But as fate would have it, Bill would soon be vindicated. We call out some of those Facebook people by name and we denounce their expertise in the Manx forums.

Damon Harmon name should be familiar if you've followed Volkswagen Drag racing. He was the dirver for Quarter Toy 1, 2 & now 3. He loves racing so much he even had campained 2 cars at once. He seems not be able to get enough. He held the record until it was taken by Pat Downs, but He holds the best MPH record 5.99 @117mph (Pat Downs holds the ET record at 5.90 @116mph) this podcast took place at European Buggin in 2024 in the pits of Max speed Carmenia. That's where I met Damon in Belgium in the drag pits as he was pitting for a fellow drag racer. If that doesn't tell you, the quality of people drag racing I don't know what does. He's got some awesome stories specifically one about Denver where he actually had to push a car across the finish line. We talk about engine building also transaxle building and some of the specifics with regards to building reliable drag cars. Your first car is always something special. No matter how good or bad is it holds a place in your heart. Well this podcast is about what the experience would be like to drive your same first car or a recreation to it 50 years later. Dean Kirsten's been on the podcast several times before, he's the first guest to be on for a third time. And it's only fitting after driving across Europe with him in the 2024 Cal look caravan and watching him drive the recreation of his first car the Vw blue 1967 Cal look. This car spotted some Dino alloys, Brad's interior, 1700 CC engine with 48 IDs and all the traditional Cal look fixings. There was a lot of painstaking detail taken through photographs down to stitch measurements to re-create the Brad's upholstery. Actually finding a both of the possible same fabric from the 70s that was used in this car. So many cool things came together on this project that Russel Richie decided to put together as a recreation for Dean's first car. It's a great story about how your first car holds such a special place in your heart. Not only is it fitting that this is podcast 275 because the car was featured in the February 1975, Cal looks spec.

The family sarts racing with Rodney Jr. known as "Radical Rod" Dad (Rodney Seinor) gets the itch & Lee sells them a Drag car fomally known as the Pied Piper that would soon become the "Sum Fun" Pro Stock drag bug. Larry the younger brother has a 56 Oval hes driving to highschool. in 1984 he pulls it apart for a restoration. The car never get put back together unitll the early 2000's. Its ultimatly featured in Hot VW's . The Drag car is eventually sold to Collector / enthusiest Russell Ritchie. Its agreat story with history of the 80's-90's drag racing. Larry latest project is featured in Hot VW's February 2024 "My Hot 56"
Martin Freidschröder is the pilot of the Mexxspeed Ghia. This is the worlds fastest naturally asperated Volkswagen. With a best ET of 8.6 secons in the 1/4 mile. Martin is a bit excited about his car. So excited you can feel it through his interview. He never stops thinking. He has custom built most parts on this what started life out as a karmann Ghia. From the carbon fiber body parts to the overhead fuel injection rails that quirt the menthonal into this beast of an engne. He custom built his own cylinderheads, intake manifolds, throttle boddies, and so much more. The trans axel uses a Porsche G50 housing with all custom internals handles the power to the axel. He has a enuique perspective on thinking & theories that he has put to the test in prusute of being the fastest naturally asperated Volkswagen.

If you're familiar at all with Arizona or the southwest, you have for sure heard of Chirco Vw. Joe Cihrco started the business in 1984. As a teenager he met a neighbor that had a classic Volkswagen and he would go hang out one day that neighbor gave him that Volkswagen. His family built a shop and he started Turco Vw 16,000 ft.² of Vw heaven. In this podcast, we talk about the last 40 years of being in business. The customers he's met. John Maher is known to some people as the drummer for the early punk rock band the Buzzcocks. Starting in a punk band in the beginning of the punk rock era is pretty legendary. He also happen to be at the same place in the UK in the early days of when Volkswagen dragracing started to takeoff. John, after being in a band had an engine mishap (done by another shop) started repairing Volkswagens and soon after started rebuilding engines. His competition started at his first VW event when he entered the engine pull competition. Soon after he was building competition race engines on to building his first oval window drag car studying the pages of hot VW's magazine to see what was happening in the US. Some projects are more extreme than others. When buidling a custom VW, how far do you go? Well, if its an all out project and you team up with illegal speed shop prepare for it to go crazy. This project started as a brainchild of one of their customers that laid dead in another shop for about 10 years. It was put up for sale and when Harrison saw it, he reached out to the owner to talk about the project and he ends up, convincing the owner to bring it to illegal speed shop and get that project finish. Already started on a full frame down the center, they went forward and full tubed the whole car moving the seats back for the driver who 6 foot eight. This thing has it all 400 hp TDI motor. Six speed manual transmission, C6 front brakes and cantilever rear suspension. Harrisons' a hard-core VW guy and we also talk about his 64 Beetleand some of the cool ways that he slammed the living crap out of it and drove it static. Transaxles have always been a shifty subject. With less and less people rebuilding them it seems the world is getting smaller in the world of transaxles. Ben Berniklau is a second generation transactional builder. His father was half owner of one of the largest transaxle rebuilding shops in Riverside. He learned how to build tranny mostly on his own after not listening to his dad and following his heart and being in the VW industry. Rusty Lee Pickering started in the Volkswagen hobby with a bright pink beetle. He couldn't have been more proud to drive that pink beetle in the early 90s. That led to a succession of different Volkswagens to own and always looking to make friends with other VW enthusiasts. When his neighbors owned buses and he wanted to meet him, an opportunity came where they could use his skill set. After leaving school, he learned to become a welder fabricator. When his new friend needed help with a rock 'n' roll bed, he looked at it and thought he could make a better version. That begins Rusty Lee's rock 'n' roll beds. At first he was just making them to presold orders by word-of-mouth before long. He was missing shows for an entire weekend because he never made it out of the car park from delivering pre-sold rock 'n' roll beds. With the help of a supportive wife who told him to bet on himself, he decided to go full-time and into making rock 'n' roll beds. He now has eight people helping build those beds in their workshop he's never been busier, a hard-core VW enthusiast from the beginning and a love for all things. 1990's UK VW Scene. Thump thump is a name synonymous with wild custom out of the park builds from the 90s. Jay Townsend's on this weeks podcast. His eye for style and creativity was exuded in the cars that were built through thump thump. Whether it was custom script where the rear air vents used to be. Russel Ludwig is the owner operator of Oldspeed out of Paramount California. His shop has been in business since the late 80s. Starting as a source of income to get through college it turned into a business that filled a need in the Volkswagen scene. From buying and flipping cars at Pomona and giving them the "Oldspeed "look. Starting in the early 80s he seen it all in the Vw scene from days of the street races to building engines and cars for drag racers and gang members alike. His shop in Long Beach was neutral territory. His best friend Roland made for his first employee and they were together until Roland passed away. If you've read any issues of Volks World over the past 20 years I'm certain you know the name Paul Medhurst from his early days with the square back they gave him the nickname "Puppy". Setting off early in his days to roam the world his experience was cut short due to lack of funds. After he spent some money buying a lot of type three parts posting them for sale in the magazine advert Paul came back to an answering machine full of request for parts. Asking his friend Ivan to use the name type three detectives Paul then kicked off a successful business supplying NOS type three parts in the early days of his career. Seeing the change evolve into lots of buses being put back on the road it was only natural that the transition was made to type two detectives. It's good to hear the stories from the enthusiast that turn their hobby into a career and the path he took to do it. It doesn't always take tons of money to make a showstopper. Alex Boughen and his father are proof of this. Alex having a desire for an air cooled beetle picks up at 1975 1200. The seller says it needs just a little bit of work on a few weekends to get it on the road. Removing the carpet revealed that the nails holding the carpet down to the wood screwed to the holy floor pan meant trouble. Luckily Alex's dad is a welder by trade and they took on the rebuild of this project and it turned out way better than expected. In 2022 Alex won the builders choice award that's given by the top builders in the UK to their favorite car. This car is loaded with air suspension custom three-piece 17 inch wheels a 1641 cc engine and tons of custom brass pieces built by Alex and his dad. This just goes to show it's not always about money it's more about determination. You're just in luck Alex is currently working on a 1968 Beetle to debut at Volksworld 2025 and we are looking forward to seeing that debut.

The name Paul Morton should ring a bell. Paul is a contributing writer and photographer to the new Vw trends magazine. Paul was also editor of autosound security magazine as well as import racer magazine and co-editor of drifting magazine. His first Volkswagen he bought in 1986 worked on it as long as he could and was forced to move on to mini trucks for reasons of convenience. Is this the ultimate Cal-look tribute car. The California look with something that started in the late 60s early 70s in Southern California. For the past few decades, there have been lots of tribute cars and some have gone over the top and some have chased every specific detail down to the last Lucas turn signal. Mark Akullian has been in the Volkswagen scene since he was 13 years old which means over 30 years he's been in the Volkswagen scene. He's no stranger to magazine covers in April 1988 his 1957 beetle was on the pages of Hot VW's magazine. This yeay His 1961 beetle graced the cover of Hot VW's California look issue. That about sums up the goal when building a cal-look car. This car's been in the making for dozens of years with the slow collecting of every part and piece to build what Mark felt was the perfect California look Beetle. 2387 cc engine dual 48 Idas. Custom hand fabricated deck lid, (all steel) to replicate the EMPI fiberglass deck lid from back in the 60s. Porsche 356 brakes and original EMPI steering wheel. Those are those are just a few things, to name the dozens of customizing thats been done to this car to pay the ultimate tribute to the most popular Style that seems to never run out of favor with the crowds. Driving your Volkswagen is the most fun. One of the greatest experiences I've ever had was driving my Volkswagen in competition against other cars. This weeks episode is about the only Volkswagen that was in 2023's sick the magazine death week. It's a weeklong road trip that goes from track to track and plenty of oddball places in between for checkpoints. AJ Sims of low budget racing and Anton Walker piloted his fastback Volkswagen on this challenge. And what a challenge it was. It seems like they were destined for trouble from the beginning. It's a wild story about late nights, roadside repairs, not enough sleep, roach motels and all of the things that make road trips so memorable. I guarantee after you listen to this you'll want to take your Volkswagen on one of these events. It doesn't need to be the fastest but it definitely can be the most fun. Driving our cars is what this is all about. There's no fun just staring at it in the show room but the rubber the road and make tracks like these guys did.
Jeff Patterson is with Type 4 Revoulution. Hes your east coast type 4 guy. WIth a back ground in the military being trained in helicopeter manitinance. His love for working on VWs comes from a need to fix his own cars. He loves type 4 engines. We discuss the type 4 engine pros & cons. Drag racing in the United Kingdom with Volkswagens started in the late 70s early 80s. A lot of guys from the day are still around and we were able to track down one of them for today's podcast. John Brewster got into Volkswagens in the mid-70s eventually working for auto carava a VW restoration and supply company. That evolved into him building engines and performance motors. He I listed the auto caravan drag car that also worked for slalom racing and lots of other things back in the day. He was originally involved in the VW drag racing in the UK. When you see a Type 34 Ghia they are a work of art. When this Italian designed car meets an interior to match, You get the Ghia we have here. Rob "Rourky" O'rourke is a man with an eye for style. He's raised in the trade of coach trimming (2nd generation). His father started the business and he worked for him eventually taking it over. He is quite a character. In his daily life he works on Ferraris, Lamborghini's & Jaguars. Using his knolwadge of the classic coachtrimming from the golden era of racecar, he blends these styles together. On his Type 34 he brought this all together. From the bronze knobs, to intergrated lights, and lets not for get the brass work. If you meet him, you'll remeber him always. There are cars that inspire other peoples cars to be built, with out the people that build those cars that wouldnt happen. Randy Gates is the man behind several cars that have infulenced the VW scene. First his 1957 23 Window bus that graced the cover of Hot VWs in 2003. Then his 1952 Split window bug that was built by Buddy Hale in Tempe Az. This car most certanly had a huge impact on the VW scene as a whole. It definitely had that impact on me. The azure blue 1952 crotch cooler split window was a perfect example of a Calle car done right. With all of the signature signs of Buddy Hale mild the paint custom fab shift light and line lock on the column two special viewing windows for the rear shift tunnel. This was one of the first cars that buddy put extra detail in to show off a lot of his extra fab work. This car when it hit the scene was legendary and raise the bar for a bunch of other vehicles. It's hard to say the exact influence this vehicle had on the scene but this podcast goes into the story behind building it and one man's approach to building his dream car. Randy has a history that goes back to the early 70s growing up in Southern California there was no shortage of cool VW's out there that lit his fire that burned and reignited in the 2000s. His 67 stock Bug then his 57' 23 window bus onto the split window and more Randy's owned in his life over 40 Volkswagens. A great podcast and a good listen .

Eric Meyer has been involved with Volkswagens for over 45 years. Starting with his first bus that he picked up when he was around 13 years old all through high school even into part-time jobs working on them. Loving the skateboard culture which goes hand-in-hand Volkswagens he wanted to have more of an impact in making skaters more identifiable. He gets himself a job at Vision Street Wear (more like creates himself a job). After a few years there decides to branch off on his own and start Simple shoe company. In order to do that he was sacrificed some of his Karmann Ghia's for seed money to start his new shoe company. On a wing and a prayer he shows up to the first action sports clothing event and hits a home run. This is a great story about the persistence and determination that is indicative in every VW enthusiast. As you'll find out Eric's had quite a few VW's and a lot of them that you'll remember. It's a great story and lots of cool history.

Pookie's dream was one of the coolest square backs in the 90s fully detailed. Gunmetal gray paint Nissan pulsar seats it toward the show circuit for several years always a top contender. Tony Moyer and his wife built this things with the beginning intentions of having a daily driver. Like all car built this one spun out of control and wet detail crazy from the polish fuse to the chrome detailing on the transaxle the chrome front beam and so much more chrome this was the wheels off fully detailed show car. What happened to this car and where did it end up we find out on this week's podcast with a special guest appearance at the end.
Sam Kutz is the owner of new vintage VW repair shop. They're based just outside of Denver in Arvada Colorado. Sam has been wrenching on VW's for over 25 years. He's also been listening to podcasts for a couple years and we've chatted back-and-forth on Instagram. On my way through Colorado with my Ghia TC I stopped at Sam's and he lent me a huge hand to get my car back on the road. He's got a great VW story and this hobby is in his blood, he's a solid as they get and a guy that I consider a friend. John Schuerger is a staple in the VW drag racing scene you can find him in any of the drag races on the West Coast. This episode we sit down with him at The Volks Group inaugural summer showdown one in Medford Oregon. Bill, Brandon and Johnny head to Medford Oregon for The Volks Group summer showdown 1. This is the first event put on by The Volks group and man what an event this was. Of course it was what the Medford (nor cal) group normally does which is much love and aloha thanks to Tom Kinny and the Kinny kitchen. The whole group up there is fantastic and I can't say enough about them. We bring the gray car Johnny's 62 up for the first time he hits the track a boy do things happened. We had an exciting fun filled three days. Plus Bill brings out his drag car that has been sitting for the past 10 years that he purchased one year ago and put it on the track. Hear all about it. George's passion started one night at a party when he saw a rare vehicle that grabbed his interest which turned out to be a type 34 razor edge gea. From that point he was hooked in the VW world. The Ultimate Home built Show stopper!! FUBAR if you don't know what that stands for Google it. But that's the story and the name behind Lyndon Creamers 1964 bug. He's owned this bug twice in the first time it was featured in Volksworld was around 2003 he sold. tichanged hands several times. It was wreckled and changed up from when he owned it. He later and re-purchased the car back in 2013. He decided to put it back in the show circuit but this time No holds barred. It was going to be an all out assult on the show circuit. He infact made quite the splash when it re-surfaced. Debuting it at Volks World show and requesting a indoor spot based on a single picture. Lyndon did it. He blew away the spectators with th finish of this 4 year (this time) labor of love. Lyndons also been working on a driver 56' Beetle. Look for more of Lyndon this year at a few shows.

The name Greg Aronson is a familiar name in the VW world. Most people know his name for the famous Aronson/Holmes 63 Cal-Look car. Gregs story is so much more. From the humble beginings of buiding his model A as his first driver, to learning transaxle rebuilding at Gene Berg Enterprises. At 20 years old He and Ron Flemming started F&A Performance. Which evolved into one of the formost recognized names in Off-road racing FAT Perfromance. One of their first guys out the is Marty Letner, Malcom Smith, Larry Raglen 5 Time baja winner. The exposion of the off-roading history has them busyier than they imagined. The evolution of how Toyota TRD starts to support off-roading vs VW. Alos the history of how the Type 4 (Tuna Boat) engines come into the off-road racing world. The Type 4 upright fan conversion kits ans so much more in this podcast. John Lazenby is one of those people that has been around the scene since the early 60s. His love and passion for Volkswagens still continues to this day. As one of the founding members of Der Kliner Panzers Volkswagen club, he gives us some insight to the early history of the club and how things came together. You may have heard of his club car named "Butternut". Having a passion for Volkswagens lead him to working in the automotive industry getting a job at Autohaus in 1971-1981 working there until just before they closed. In this podcast John recounts the history from back in the early days. His memory is impeccable with dates and people and places that critical things in the VW seen as it happened. It's long because it's filled with lots of good detailed information. If you love early Vw history of the southern California VW seen this is the podcast for you.

The 1972 EMPI was sold to filter dynamics. Just before that happened Darrell Vittone started the race shop which was a separate entity from the VW dealership. One day some kid from the East Coast is peering through the window and Darrel sees him. Darrel opens the door and meets Dave Andrews these two for the next few years campaign the inch pincher plus the race shop cars. Everywhere the race shop went there was Dave Andrews campaigning his own 1967 beetle that he purchased brand new. Hear his story about his move out west and also the evolution of his personal car that eventually turned into a straight race car. Good story about a great chapter in our VW hobby.

The type three Variant & Sedan (Squareback & Notchback) was the car that was debuted at the 1961 Frankfurt auto show in order to develop a new upgrade level vehicle for people that wanted to upgrade from the Beetle. In the early years of the type three there were a lot of one year only and earlier only design attributes. In this podcast we break down all of the early details that are known to be on 63 & earlier type three's. Today on the registry only 75 early pre-1963 & earlier type threes are registered. Maybe the type three is the hidden gem of rarity that not a lot of people know about. We once again turn to our type three resident expert Lee Hedges for an in-depth review of specific to early type three details. Bryce Allemann and Kathy Hicks are a road tripping power couple that first hit the road in 2017. The first journey across the United States northern half consisted of 8,754 miles. That article can be seen in August 2018 Hot VWs magazine. They scheduled a month off of work to accomplish this feat in the 1967 SO42 Westy. Since then, they've had a desire to do it again which we were lucky enough to catch them on the return home from the latest southern US trip in their 67 VW bus. We discuss what it's like to be on the road for 30 days. Some of the mechanical challenges that they faced during this particular road trip. A lot of the cool things that you see when you're traveling the country by road. This VW bus a 1967 SO42 westfailia camper is more than just a bus. It was purchased brand new by Bryce's grandfather then give it to his father and gave it to Bryce. He's lawn more miles on this bus that his grandfather and father combined. Kathy is an equal partner and sharing all of the driving duties as well as planning some of the stops and making sure they get to squeeze in whatever is on their bucket list. It's a great story about a dedication to exploring this wonderful country we live in and doing it in your favorite VW. In the early 2000s while trying to figure out what to do with my bus and surfing the Internet I ran across a website called vintagebus.com. On that website was a gallery for people to upload pictures. I ran across Rikki James from England & his 1954 Right Hand drive barn door bus. This bus was sporting big power type 4 with a 2600cc 48 IDA's and Porsche five speed. This bus would serve as a template for me to build my first bus. Rikki's been ahead of the curve for a long time, an avid VW enthusiast and hard-core bus owner. You can sometimes catch him on the autobahn or the M25 in his right hand drive barn door hauling the mail. This bus is no joke and has been on the road since the early 90s! Listen to what it was like in the early days before there was disc brake conversions or narrowed beams and all the other parts and pieces that hes had custom-made for this barn door bus. Did I mention Rikki was doing patina before patina was a thing? He's a trailblazer at all things cool. Rikki James is a great guy.
Levi Weir is from Phoenix Arizona and runs a company called Pandragger parts. Since about 14 years old he's been working on Volkswagens. Taking up a trade in welding and fabrication with a raceshop he learn the skills that his friends utilize to help them work on their VW's he eventually turns that into a business fabricating and building air suspensions as well as paint and bodywork through his business pandragger parts. There's also a car club named Pandraggers out of Arizona that they started when he and his friends were younger. On this Podcast we discuss air suspension on Beetles. He also discuss his relationship with Randy from Randar wheels who he met fabricating racecars. He currently owns seven sets of different varieties of RNDAR wheels. Richard Garaino owned competition foreign car parts in New York. After seeing the interest in Volkswagen beetles aftermarket parts he reached out to Joe Vittone and became an authorized EMPI distributor in New York. Rodney Adams with RAD designs out of Turlock California has been enthusiast for many years starting off with his first bug when he was 15 converting that to a water cooled 2.3 L Ford Pinto motor. He's had years of experience in different lines of work learning to TIG welder young age working in food processing plants repairing and machining equipment. He took that skill set and developed one of the coolest turbo set ups that's out there to date. He has a 1600 cc car that runs 12's in the quarter mile with a turbo set up on it parentheses. On this episode we discuss turbo charging cars fuel injection versus carburetion the advantages of E 85 fuel and what makes his turbo kits different. Lately we've been going down the rabbit hole of the late model Beetles. Late model Beetles were the most technologically advanced type 1 Volkswagens of the air-cooled brand. As they got later into production sales numbers dropped considerably for multiple reasons we talk about that on this podcast. We also discussed Mike Goode and his collection of Volkswagens that he's had over the years and his passion for the hobby. He has an affinity for late model Volkswagens growing up in Chicago not a lot of the early ones were around. Building a collection over the years. Only to find himself in a bidding war that ends on bring a trailer for the most expensive 1977 beetle sold to date. He like us has a passion for this hobby and he's got a varied collection from a 67 beetle 73 super beetle that was recently featured in hot VW's magazine and he loves those turtle backs. The Type 4 engine known as the VW big Block. VWs 2nd gen aircooled engine. Its a touqe monster. The was always an issue with getting it into a VW. Well Thanks to Joe Cali the average VW enthusiest can convert the pankace type 4 engine into an upright engine. He was lucky enough to score a 2.0L type 4 914 engine. Joe literly wrote the book. Back in 1993 Joe an engineer by trade decided he would make a manual for the conversion that he did. Joe has an impressive story and some great luck as a VW enthusiast. We talk about the performance of a type four and what he had to go through for the first conversion not to mention owning a VW in the Bronx. Chuck Beck loved racing, he was building tube frame cars while in the SE Pacific testing Atom bombs. When he got out of the air force he built a one good VW out of a 46' & 53 wrecked beetle. He would build whatever he could. He liked racing so he bought a Devon kit car and started that build. He made a chevy powered racecar. His first car he started making a mold from was a Porsche 910 before he could build one he came across a 550 car that his customer let him make a mold from. That began the legend known today as the Beck 550 Spyder. While he was building the first one, a magazine photographer comes to his shop and takes pictures of his 550 replica. From there the rest is history. His current 904 Porsche is quite a legend itself at 1500lbs and 450hp . Its a great story of a man who went from Air Force to building cars in his garage to working for Shelby as a fabricator. Leaving Shelby to founding partner in FUNCO the company that builds sand cars. Hes done it all.

As the 2022 Triple crown real street class wraps up this year we talk to David "Volkstroke" Ruiz. Hes been battling out on the 1/8th Mile with the real street racers for a few years. This year David stripped out last years car and swapped everyting over to a super clean Oval Rag. This car debuted heavier than his last car but ran a bit faster. He then shaved some weight to get close to the spec and then he was ready for battle. With that he's probably the fasest Member of DBK car club. For those of you that wonder what real street is well, its street legal cars that race at the track with limited motor size, weight limits, no power adders and thats about it. You'll need to be registered and insured, 5:00am meet up at the gas station and fill all the gas you'll need for the day. Tanks are sealed off and drive 20 miles on the freeway to the track from there the only thing you can change is your tires. Each year this class has been heating up and geting very competitive. In the final episode of podcasts recorded at fast 4 cartel blitz at the beach. I did two short podcast one with Paul Gelinas who has some history back from Bakersfield in the mid 80s hanging around Steve Knechts shop Volks Werks. He helped chop up the jow Future Shock. I thought it was really interesting to get a perspective from an enthusiast that was seeing things from a third-party perspective. He also has been featured in Hot VWs in 2010. And if you're in the Midwest he's your engine tranny guy. He and a few guys from the Midwest are brave enough to go and be part of the hot Rod drag week. A weeklong event that tallies over 1000 miles where you have to drive your drag car from track to track and run your best ETA. It's a great story the VW community should be much more involved in this it seems like a great time. He's also just authored a new book on how to rebuild your VW engine. Kenny Pfitzer is no stranger to the VW world. Starting back in the 80's his VW bus "wet Dream" was on the cover of VW trends 1995. Rick Sadler could possibly be the Forest Gump of the VW world. Hes worked at Johnny Speed & Chrome, Dee Engineering & Empi. Before he could drive he was in awe of the Schley Bros Dragster. His involvment through the years would have him building the engine for that same dragster 40 years later! Dirt track racing modified VW at Ascot Dirt track. Then to purchase the world famous mousetrap drag car that was driven by Dean Lowrey. A member of a DKP III Car Club. His 1967 yellow Cal-Look beetle has been on the cover of VW trend magazine also hot VW's magazine. Excellent stories that goes throughout the years of VW Performance and Racing a great listen. Johnny Osmundson has been making a name for VWs on the no prep steet world. His Strret bug is a 1965 Blue Right hand drive with a 1915 Turbo with a full polished 48IDA on a draw through set up. His 1962 primered drag bug is his first car. The car sat for year then he finallly started to build it for the street. Hes been on 1320 Video & TX2K. He has been representing the VW scene in a major way. His Bug is running fast How fast? 5.30 in the 1/8th @ 136mph. Recently he went on Hoonagans VS it was Hondas V Haters and the outcome was less than desireable.

Tom is the epitome of the Aloha spirit. His frendly style and enthusiasim for the VW scene is evedent when you meet him. Mike Lawlwess got hsi first VW in 1969. Building VW's since then had been his passion. Marriage and kids came along and he put his racing on hold. After his kids got a little older he decided to get back into drag racing VW's. Because it was cheap! You would know his VW 1965 karmann ghia its been a staple VW at all the drags since 1999 and early 2000's. Starting in the 13's he chipped away at it year after year. Deciding to up his game he talked to the judges about how he could better his car. He puts in the work and starts to become a real contender. Eventually he won the Der Renn Kafer Cup class 2 years in a row. His Ghia is still on the track now Piloted by his son Mark Lawlwss. Hs car was the test bed for several develpments by CB perfformance from Traction bars to EFI. Bus box U-joint conversions this car is an Icon in the VW scene.
The fast for cartel was started by Jeff Kramarsic and Jeff Newcomb. These two guys have put in a lot of time effort and energy to create a racing organization for racers by racers. With big classes eighth mile drags and big payouts they've succeeded in putting on a family vibe atmosphere. A two day race event that's nothing but drag racing and a great time with great their big tire class (the heavy) and the small tire class (the light) as well as the triple index have huge payouts when there's big turn outs these guys have extra random chip pulls for random match ups as well as bonus money thrown in at random an exciting event for drag racers. Performance Technology is a name in the air cooled VW that is synonimous with some of the fastest cars on the track. The man responsible for this is Fred Simpson. Fred started out working for VWOA as a factory trained technician. He loved to race his car but found his niche in cylinder head fabrication and building. He eventually came out with the SHO VW cylinder head. We go deep in engine information and there's lots of info for you gear heads. BACK IN THE EARLY 1980S THERE WAS A GUY IN EAST LOS ANGELES BY THE NAME OF DANNY A. he did pinstriping back window logos and graphics on the side of cars. In the mid 80s there became a group of cars in the East LA area in south-central that were logoed cars. Obviously having the logo or the a.k.a. name on the side of the car. This week's podcast is with David Garcia owner and builder of the original rag – Barry car. A 1961 ragtop sunroof Volkswagen painted in Porsche indigo raspberry. Before there was the German Folks there was Buggs Buddies. A car club founded in east LA by the Chicone brothers. William Noguera was the Sgt. At arms. We breifly spoke about him on the podcast with VW Kidd. Wiliam is an author, Artist, podcaster & Co Host on Deathrow diaries a podcast from deathrow. He was one of the originators of the cal-style look with its origins in Low-Riding influanced VW Buggs. Mostly Rag tops or convertables. William liked them fast. Out of central Florida comes Vintage Air Cooled Parts. Bryan got into the hobby at a young age and a car accidnet side tracked him for a few years. Dipping into the min-truck scene for a bit. Then back to VWs. A compnay started by a couple of VW enthisiest that decided during the lockdown that they should start a VW parts company. First product was the foot rest with dimple dyes. The company starts from there going on to make several parts. The custom touch is what sets them a part from the competition. You can find Bryan at the VW show on the east coast. This year in Europe there are two big shows happening the first one is Hessisch Oldendorf . The second show the following weekend is European bug in. European Buggin is the premier event in Europe for the custom VW crowd. Held in Chimay Belgium they turn the streets into a dragstrip the parking and camping areas into a large rave and swap meet spaces. It is absolutely an event to behold. One of the best things out there is the gas or garage set up. Vintage gassers and drag cars from early Volkswagen racing history are on display and are not only on display but are also drag raced. With an appreciation for a lot of the American VW drag race history you may get the opportunity to see some VW legends drag race some of the old cars that they once owned. On this episode we talk to Russell Ritchie who's been putting on VW gasser garage since the beginning. We talk about the cars that will be on display and some of the first times that he was racing with people like Roger Crawford, Darrell Vittone, Ron Fleming and many others. He was a born & bread Chevy guy. His son wanted a VW. From that point on he fell in love with the people in the scene. His 1965 VW bus that has been merged with a 2008 Jetta. Its a top notch job. Lonnie said "here's the guy who had the first 1 piece windows" John also still has his first cal-looker from the 1970's Still today! He also helped out some neighbors you may have heard of. What I love about our hobby is that if you want to build a better part. Have at it. Thats where I met Marc Kuttner. While I was walking through the swap meet I met Marc. He has a passion for performance & being an engineer by trade, he made a dial-a- cam gear. His parents were from Germany & that started his trip down the VW path. His 59 Beetle has a 2110 built variable vane turbo so he knows performance. We go deep in cam gear talk. Buckle up & hang on for this podcast.
Joey Giordano snagging his sisters boyfriends oval window. Thats when he got the bug! starting a family young he did all the work himself but things change. Shin Watanabe is the Editor for Hot VWs magazine. He has a love for Volkswagens that started when he was just 4 years old. Steve is one of the original VW builders from Bakersfield Ca. With is shop Volks Works he built / painted & created over a dozen cars that were featured in the mid to late 80's. His knack for customization & paint put the Bakersfield crew on the map. He also with Chris Addington sold custom dashboards, bumpers and more. If it was cool & from Bakersfield Steve probably played a role in it. He later moved on to the V8 world building more custom cars.

Chase Hill out of Reno Nevada is known for helping you get a good ride out of your slammed VW. Chase started out making custom wheel tubs for buses. Being a Union ironworker by trade he welds for a living. With loving slammed early bugs he used his talent to extend the trailing arms for re-centering the wheel in the arch. It also fixes the steering issues with 6" narrowed beams on super slammed beetles. He's been in the game from way back in the late 90's. And like a fine wine he will not extend your trailing arms before their time. Lead time is 7-9 weeks but well worth the wait for handcrafted excellence.

Creighton Muller from Tacoma Washington built his 1956 chop top custom Beetle in 1955. It was a brand new car. His parents never knew he chopped it until they saw it parked next to another Beetle. He did traditional hot rod influenced modifications to it. Starting in the late 70s through the 1990s Scott Guildner had been painting & building some of the most memorable cars of the 80s. He built Chop Rod in 1986, (Sold to Jim Moto) then on to build Aaron Kahans 1967 Scalloped bug as well as Bob Daniels Bug. His hot rod influenced style definitely emerges. wether is scallops or Flames Chops or louvers Scott was the guy in the San Fernando Valley making it happen. He's also well known in the Hot rod world with his Carsten tops & in the Porsche world for high line paint work. Scott is truly a renaissance man!
