Imam Tom Facchine of Yaqeen Institute returns to the podcast to break down the concept of innovation in Islam. Shaykh Ismail Alqadi is a Qari (professional reciter of the Qu'ran) from Amman, Jordan. He learned the various sciences related to the recitation of the Qu'ran from several teachers and has an ijazah and sanad in the ten different narrations of the Qu'ran. He also has a degree in Islamic studies majoring in Fiqh and Usul.
In this podcast, Shaykh Ismail introduces the topic of maqamat, which refers to a system of melodic modes used to recite the Qu'ran. He walks us through examples of maqamat and the context that best suits their usage. We also discuss how he developed his own style and his foray into the singing of nasheeds (Islamic songs).

Mawlana Saaleh Baseer is a brilliant young scholar of Hanafi law and Mughal history from the Bay Area. After completing his memorization of the Qu'ran, he received his Alim degree from Darul Uloom Azaadville in South Africa. Afterwards he went on to pursue a Bachelor's degree from Columbia University where he majored in History. Most recently he has completed a Master's from the University of Chicago and is wrapping up his studies at Darul Qasim College where he has trained to be a mufti(scholar qualified to give legal rulings).
Mawlana Saaleh has been able to disperse his passion of Mughal history to others in America, particularly those of South-Asian descent. In this episode, he walks us through his life story, his pursuit of Islamic knowledge and how he came across the Mughal Empire. We also cover other topics such as the importance of mentorship and having the right teachers to progress one's education.

Dr. Yakoob Ahmed is an Ottoman historian with a specialization in late Ottomon history. He received his Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London and he currently teaches at Istanbul University in Turkiye.
I had a chance to sit down with Dr. Yakoob after I attended a weekend seminar he did in Chicago on Ottoman history. We discussed his origin story, his identity as a "Londoner", how he developed empathy for others, and biases that Western academics operate from..amongst other things.

Shaykh Umer Khan is a rare individual who has excelled in both corporate America as well as Islamic studies. Up until recently, he was the VP of Information Technology and Security at SpaceX, where he reported directly to Elon Musk. He recently left to become Chief Information and Security Officer at another firm.

His studies took him to Mauritania, Syria, Egypt, U.A.E., Morocco and Pakistan. Omar Durrani is a chess coach based out of South Florida. He cut his teeth in the chess world growing up in Columbus, Ohio before picking up on teaching chess during his undergraduate years as a way to pay the bills. He found himself teaching chess to kids in a small town in Ohio where he came across the children of comedian Dave Chappelle, who in turn became some of his top students. He coached these kids to back to back Ohio high school state championships at the Queen City Classic in both 2018 and 2019.

In this episode, I caught up with Hamza Dudgeon from the YouTube channels "Hamza the Historian" and "Hamza the Linguist". Hamza is a Muslim convert from Minnesota who I met while he was doing his graduate studies at the University of Chicago. In this almost 3 hour long episode, we talked about powerlifting, his upbringing in Minnesota, his conversion to Islam, approaches to understanding various world views and the aftermath of the George Floyd murder.(We recorded this episode during the trial but it's being released after the conviction of Derek Chauvin)

Hamza Dudgeon is an academician in Religious Studies and Islamic History. He holds an M.A. in Religious Studies from the University of Chicago and is currently a doctoral student at the Islamic University of Minnesota.
He has experience teaching at the university level, in public schools, and in a seminary setting. Hamza has taught Somali refugees, graduate students, undergrads, and visiting professors, as well as children of all ages and people of various ethnic backgrounds.
Besides teaching, Hamza is also passionately committed to his research. At the University of Chicago, he specialized in Islamic ritual (fiqh). Hamza's doctoral dissertation is on nascent Islamic legal epistemology (Uṣūl al-Fiqh) before al-Shāfiʿī (d. 820). Most in the field claim that a 9th century figure, al-Shāfiʿī is the first to advocate an Islamic legio-ritual theory known as Uṣūl al-Fiqh. However, al-Shāfiʿī’s teacher, Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan al-Shaybānī (d. 805), promulgated a legio-ritual theory in his Kitāb al-Aṣl, which is largely untouched and unknown by Western Academics. Even before that, legal analogy (qiyas) and jurisprudential discretion (istiḥsān) is seen in the thought of al-Awzāʿī (d. 774).
Hamza Dudgeon has also written on Sufism’s esoteric allegories of Islamic ritual, how Chicago muftis use modern science to produce fatwas on transgenderism, Islamic ritual footwear, and Isma’ili Shi’ite legio-ritual theory. Hamza's paper on Islamic ritual footwear, “The Khuffayn in Muslim Ritual Thought,” was presented at the Middle Eastern Studies Association’s annual conference held in San Antonio, TX Nov, 2018. He has also published in JMIAS twice “The Counter-Current Movements of Andalusia and Ibn ʿArabī: Should Ibn ʿArabī be considered a Ẓāhirī?” and “The Revival of Sharia's Allegories: al-Ghazzālī and al-Ḥakīm al-Tirmidhī.” Hamza has an article on the entire history of the Hanafi school of Islamic jurisprudence, which is forthcoming in Routledge’s Handbook of Islamic Ritual & Practice.
The Ahmadiyyah Movement was started in the late 1800s by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian which is located in the state of Punjab in modern day India. The Ahmadiyyah ascribe Messiah-ship to Mirza Ghulam Ahmad and are considered to be outside the fold of normative Islam by traditional Muslims.

Dr. Ali Ataie is by many accounts, the most knowledgeable Muslim alive today on the subject of Christianity. He is grounded in both the Islamic sciences and has also earned a Ph.D. from the Graduate Theological Seminary in Berkeley, California where he did his thesis on an esoteric interpretation of the Gospel of John in the New Testament; an interpretation that seeks to reconcile the Islamic understanding of monotheism with the Gospel that has the highest Christology. His knowledge of Arabic, Greek and Hebrew allows him to have a rare insight when it comes to Comparative Religions.
I had a chance to discuss his ideas on the Gospel of John along with other subjects related to Christianity with Dr. Ataie on this episode. We covered the Apostle Paul, differences in the Early Church, and the concept of the Messiah. Dr. Ali Ataie also clarifies his personal position on the Gospels and tells us about a future project he's got in the works.

Hamza Perez is an imam in Pittsburgh, PA. He is of Puerto Rican descent and is a former hip hop artist. Hamza is currently leading the development of a Muslim community on the north side of Pittsburgh composed primarily of converts to Islam. Revisiting the cancellation of Nini's Deli earlier this summer, I brought on two gentlemen who were on the frontlines in defense of Nini's during the turbulent week that resulted in its closure.
My guests for this show are Pastor Joe Wyrostek and Jose Riesco III from Metro Praise International(MPI) Church in Chicago. Metro Praise is the church that is attended by Juan-Elias Riesco, who used to run Nini's.
I wanted to hear Joe and Jose's perspectives as they were very close to the situation. Jose in fact was preaching outside the restaurant on their final day of business for those who remember. I allowed them to share their beliefs as Pentecostal Christians and asked them to elaborate on things such as preaching style, politics, and their overall worldview.

Netflix's recent show "Indian Matchmaking" gave us a glimpse into this world and I had the pleasure of sitting down with Vyasar Ganesan who was one of the main characters from the series. For Episode 21, I sit down with an old friend, Omar Usman. In my personal circle of friends, he is the guy that probably has the best reading habits. In Episode 20 of the podcast, I wanted to get an insight on Dr. Jonathan Brown's back story and we ended up having an interesting discussion about his family history, his personal challenges growing up, and how his parents let him watch the most explicit movies as a child.
Dr. Jonathan Brown is the Alwaleed bin Talal Chair of Islamic Civilization in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. He received his BA in History from Georgetown University in 2000 and his doctorate in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago in 2006. Dr. Brown has studied and conducted research in countries such as Egypt, Syria, Turkey, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, South Africa, India, Indonesia and Iran. His book publications include The Canonization of al-Bukhari and Muslim: The Formation and Function of the Sunni Hadith Canon (Brill, 2007); Hadith: Muhammad’s Legacy in the Medieval and Modern World (Oneworld, 2009; expanded edition 2017); Muhammad: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford University Press, 2011), which was selected for the National Endowment for the Humanities' Bridging Cultures Muslim Journeys Bookshelf; Misquoting Muhammad: The Challenges and Choices of Interpreting the Prophet’s Legacy (Oneworld, 2014), which was named one of the top books on religion in 2014 by the Independent; and Slavery and Islam (Oneworld, 2019). He has published articles in the fields of Hadith, Islamic law, Salafism, Sufism, Arabic lexical theory and Pre-Islamic poetry and is the editor in chief of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Islam and Law. Dr. Brown’s current research interests include Islamic legal reform and a translation of Sahih al-Bukhari. He is also the Director of Research at the Yaqeen Institute. On May 30, 2020 Nini's Deli had its highest revenue day in all of 2020. The famous restaurant had not only survived the COVID-19 pandemic but actually grew their business. Less than a week later, they closed their doors for the last time on June 5. This is an analysis of how the most popular restaurant in the state of Illinois (according to Yelp) and the No. 33 overall in the USA completely collapsed due to a combination of their political and religious positions and a botched Public Relations effort. To join me in speaking about this are two local Chicago guys, Nabeel Khan (IG: @deceptikhan) and Adil Rahman (IG: @Bearded_Servant). A story that is both fascinating and sad at the same time. Episode 17 of the podcast is a discussion around the aftermath of the George Floyd murder. I bring in AbdulRahim and Dallas Wright for this episode. AbdulRahim is a Palestinian from the Bay Area. He is a graduate of the University of Oxford and has a background in theatre an linguistics. Currently working in the tech industry, he has many years of on the ground experience with social justice activism. Dallas is a Chicago native who has a B.A. from Northwestern University and an M.A. from DePaul University in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. He has over 6 years of experience in the city's non profit sector. He spent several years working at Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN) to support the health needs of South Side families. He is currently in a senior research position at Northwestern University. In this podcast we discussed issues related to ally-ship, antiBlackness in non-white minorities, Critical Race Theory, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the effects of colonialism.

Episode 15 of the podcast is by far the longest show we have done so far. I pulled in Hooman Keshavarzi from the Khalil Center to double up as a co-host and as a guest as we hosted Dr. Taha Burak, a visiting psychologist from Istanbul, Turkey. Capping off our short Bangladesh series, Mahin sits down with fellow Ohio State alum and current Bangladesh resident Mohaimin Mostafa.
Mohaimin is a young entrepreneuer who is part of the team responsible for taking the Columbus, Ohio based coffee chain Crimson Cup and franchising it into the top coffee chain in Bangladesh. He is officially the CoManaging Director of Crimson Cup Bangladesh and is the co-founder of a more recent startup, Jhalmuri Bangladesh which is a fashion based E-commerce site. In this show I speak to Mohaimin about leaving the comforts of a cozy 9 to 5 at Nationwide Insurance in Columbus, Ohio and his desire to return to his homeland to start his entrepreneurial journey. This episode was recorded on location at the Crimson Cup Dhanmondi branch.

Mahin made a trip to Bangladesh in December 2019 and recorded a couple of episodes. In the first episode of the series titled "Dhaka Streets" he meets up with his childhood buddy Zia Imran who is doing big things in the education and entrepreneurial space in Bangladesh.
Zia is the founder and Managing Director of the American Standard International School. Prior to this, he worked as a consultant for several Fortune 500 companies in the United States such as Nationwide Insurance, Worthington Industries and Bank of America. He continues to build on his portfolio with several new business ventures established in Bangladesh. Zia is a graduate of The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business and has an MBA from Franklin University in Columbus, Ohio.
