In this episode were joined by teacher, speaker, author and recently the founder of the ***Muslimahs*** ***Renaissance**,* Ustadha Alima Ashfaq and her husband, Hafiz Zahid Minhas.

With a passion for reviving a balanced narrative on the role of Muslim women, Ustadha Alima launched the Muslimahs Renaissance a movement to rediscover the spirit of the prophetic and Qur’anic narrative in respect to gender.

Its ethos believes that if we cultivate communities where men and women are allies, we can decrease the rates of domestic violence, youth related crimes and gender based violence.

This is based on the verse:

“The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those – Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. Sūrah At-Tawbah, 9:71

The project also aims to empower men to appreciate their roles and play a role in nurturing a healthy society with women as their allies in the truest sense; as an empowered, educated and spiritually aware woman can have a positive impact in society.

WHAT YOULL LEARN In this episode, we cover the following:

  • Who is Alima Ashfaq and what does she do?
  • Who is Zahid Minhas and what does he do?
  • Why is the conversation around Muslim women such a hot topic these days?
  • How does Zahid support his wife Alima as she carries out her work, and why?
  • Do we really need more education on the topic of gender roles in Islam and our society?
  • How are women treated in todays society, and how does this differ to the time of the Prophet (pbuh)?
  • How have some cultural beliefs and practices belittled the rights of women?
  • Some people believe Islamic is a misogynistic religion. Is this true, and why do they believe this?
  • Why are Islamic events so male dominated. Shouldnt women be allowed to speak publicly?
  • What do the Quran and Sunnah really say about gender roles in Islam and society?
  • What about the idea of feminism?
  • Is there a lack of female scholarship among our communities today?
  • Who are some examples of powerful women in our history?
  • And some random facts about Alima & Zahid during our rapid fire round!

OCD obsessive compulsive disorder is a common anxiety disorder which can cause unwanted, uncontrollable thoughts, doubts and behaviours. SUBSCRIBE Mind Over Chatter is a mental health campaign aiming to instigate dialogue between Muslim students to discuss issues related to any aspect of mental health. Mental illness affects more people every year than cancer or heart disease and tends to start during your teenage years or in your early 20s. We therefore want to tackle the stigma which is prevalent in the Muslim community and allow free uninhibited discussions to take place, in order to transform the lives of many.

Share your personal experiences so that others can understand the picture. You may have looked after a family member, experienced depression or anxiety yourself, or have tips you’ve learnt from others that can improve ones mood.

Good Intentions, Guilty Feelings & Numerous Rewards This week’s episode is one that we’re sure so many of us can relate to.

Have you ever felt sad, frustrated or hopeless when you’re unable to do as many good deeds as you’d like to? Maybe you think that you’re not a good enough Muslim for Allah to love you, or for you to attain Paradise?

For many of us, this thought often remains at the back of our minds, and as time goes on we become more and more frustrated that we simply aren’t doing as much as we’re “supposed to” with regards to our worship.

Without doubt, performing numerous good deeds in our lifetime is a goal that all Muslims should aim for. And yes, some deeds merit greater rewards and blessings than others, and of those, the Prophet (pbuh) did specify a number in order to attain those rewards. Striving for Allah’s sake is, after all, a foundation of our Deen

However, by convincing ourselves that our worship – in the eyes of Allah – is measured only by its quantity, we are doing ourselves a great disservice. In fact, this is a misunderstanding on our part.

We bypass the fact that Allah (swt) looks at our intentions and sincerest efforts, even if those intentions weren’t able to flourish into great actions. We forget the numerous examples in the Quran and Sunnah which points to actions which, in our eyes may seem small, but were rewarded multi-fold by Allah (swt).

We forget that the great companion Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (ra), simply because he forgave everyone and removed any ounce of resentment towards others in his heart before sleeping every night.

We forget the prostitute who was forgiven by Allah (swt) because she gave water to a thirsty dog.

As numerous as these examples may be we still remain guilty that, for whatever genuine reason, we cannot perform a good deeds that we planned to do. It really pulls down our spirits, and for some of us who remain busy around the clock, it becomes inevitable that we give up completely.

What Worship Looks Like This week’s podcast episode was inspired by the following Facebook status by Ustadha Maryam Amir.

Maryam Amir shares with us what being close to Allah truly looks like

This status really hits home, and draws our attention to the fact that even our mundane, everyday duties can earn us an incredible amount of rewards.

RELATED EPISODE: Intention Hacking – Turn Everyday Activities into an Act of Worship

Quality Over Quantity During this episode, we also share a heartfelt blog post written by sister Amsal Rahim, in which she describes her deep sense if remorse after being unable to worship as she’d intended during her stay in Madinah, in Ramadan.

After narrated her experience and sharing an honest reflection, Amsal concluded by beautifully reminding us that no deed is overlooked by Allah (swt), even the smallest ones.

Also in This Episode During this week’s show we also shared stories submitted by you – our listeners – on our Instagram Page.

These stories show us that we all struggle to keep up, and we all want to do more for Allah (swt).

For many of us, social media makes up a large part of our lives. We spend countless hours scrolling through our apps, consuming information (some of which we shouldn't be!), and can often find ourselves getting a little too carried away at times. It's no secret that improper use of social media can cause an inability to focus, a lack of productivity, a huge amount of wasted time, potential mental health issues, among many other things.

On the flip side, social media can also benefit us in a multitude of ways. So, how do we find the balance?

In this episode, we're joined by Omar Usman – founder of the Fiqh of Social Media – who dives deep with us into the discussion of creating a healthy use of social media in our lives.

In particular, we discuss how an improper use of social media may have a negative effect on our worship and spirituality.

What You'll Learn * Who is Omar Usman, and what is the Fiqh of Social Media blog all about? * What are some common side effects of uncontrollable phone addiction? * How can social media negatively affect us in a spiritual sense? * Can you still use social media and be a good, practising Muslim? * Is it realistic to totally switch out of all social media apps? * The importance of "white space" and the science behind it * Do you always need a religious justification to use social media? * What are Omar's 4 practical steps for learning how to balance the use of social media?

This Week's Ayah of the Day

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children – like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion. [Qur'an – 57:20]

**Want to listen to the audio version instead? Click the play button below:** For many Muslims living in the West, it has become harder than ever to push a positive narrative of Islam amidst the clutter of media propaganda, conflicting viewpoints, and floods of emotional outrage following the tragic incidents occurring around the world in the name of religion.

While some may have an agenda to portray Islam in the most negative light possible, the vast majority of people are simply confused, unsure who or what to believe. With conflicts rising, frustrations growing and deep misunderstandings of our faith becoming widespread, how can Muslims act as beacons of light for society? How do we remain confident as Muslims, and instead of apologising for the acts of a few, build strong bonds and dialogue with others to exemplify and promote the true nature of our beautiful Deen?

In this episode, we’re joined by the young and bright Heraa Hashmi, a 19 year-old molecular biology student who made headlines and inspired thousands after her brilliant response to one particular student in her history class.

When her classmate claimed that Muslims don’t openly condemn acts of violence in the name of religion, Heraa became frustrated by the idea that the acts of just a few could be used to demonise an entire group of people. Determined to prove him wrong, Heraa began researching for an answer, only to find that there were no comprehensive resources detailing the vast number of mainstream Muslim responses to these acts of violence.

Three weeks later, Heraa had produced a 700+ Google doc references and all listing every incident she could find in which a Muslim condemned an act of violence carried out in the name of religion. After her tweet went viral, Heraa caught the eyes of the likes of Teen Vogue, The Guardian, and head of Yaqeen Institute, Imam Omar Suleiman.

Before she knew it, Heraa was sharing her story on stage in front of thousands of Muslims at the ICNA-MAS conference, and soon after found herself enjoying an eventful dinner with the daughters of the late Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X (may Allah have mercy on their souls) after winning the first ever ‘Muhammad Ali Confident Muslim Award’.

Join us in this episode as we discover Heraas story, and receive her advice on how Muslims can better contribute to portraying a positive narrative of Islam, and acting as beacons of light in times of darkness.

What youll learn in this episode: * Who is Heraa Hashmi? * What Heraas classmate claimed about Muslims during their history class * The inspiration behind Heraas Muslims Condemn list and how it was created * How Heraas tweet went viral and made headlines * How and why Heraa won the Muhammad Ali Confident Muslim Award * What Muslims can do in their everyday lives to exemplify the beauty of Islam through their own actions * What everyday, tolerant and well-minded non-Muslims can do to help their Muslim neighbours when they face a backlash from others in the community * What Heraa would advise young Muslims who have lost the confidence to practice their faith in public

Student Islamic societies / associations, for many Muslims, are the backbone of their University experience. During the life-changing journey through higher education, we undergo an experience of learning, self-discovery and spiritual development, and being involved in an Islamic society (ISOC) can provide a fantastic opportunity to dramatically enhance these experiences. From annual charity events to weekly spiritual circles, social gatherings, Islamic lectures, campus-wide campaigns and much more, there's no doubt that the ISOC experience creates life-long friendships, builds tremendous skills and an array of fond memories.

The excitement and sense of belonging that comes with participation in an ISOC can also, however, lead to one losing the ability to balance between their studies and extra-curricular duties. Quite often this can cause undue stress, a lack of prioritisation, the neglect of family and friends, and an internal battle between maintaining a social identity, being involved in Da'wah work, and actually succeeding at University.

How do we make the most of the ISOC experience whilst ensuring that we maintaining a healthy student-life balance, grow and self-develop as Muslims, and ultimately succeed as University students?

In this episode, we're joined by Zara Mohammed, Sajjad Khan, Naairah Aftab and podcast host Usman Majid – a panel with a plethora of ISOC experience – who discuss this in depth and provide advice to the Muslim students across the globe.

What you'll learn in this episode: * Personal journeys to practising Islam – a story from each guest * The benefits and importance of joining an Islamic society * The ISOC experience and how it shapes us * The most common reasons why students fail to maintain a healthy student-life balance * Personal experiences on the above from each guest * The importance of understanding our priorities as Muslim students (and what they are) * Understanding the bigger picture and being real with your expectations * Practical tips and advice on how to keep a firm hold of both your studies and Da'wah work

As human beings, we experience a variety of powerful emotions in our every day lives. Some bring us pleasure, others confuse us, and many are extremely difficult to bare. For so many of us, emotions like sadness, anxiety and depression are a part of our lives, dictating the quality of our lives from how we feel, to how we act around others, and how we feel about ourselves.

Is it okay to feel these emotions, or should we feel bad for doing so? Isn't this a sign of having a lack of faith?

Unfortunately in many communities – including the Muslim community – there can be somewhat of a stigma attached to this subject, making it extra difficult for those experiencing these strong feelings of pain, sadness and anxiety to reach out for help. In fear of being shamed or labelled as having "low Iman", the same people suffer in silence and sometimes can't escape.

What does Islam really say about these emotions, and how do we go about managing them?

In this episode, we're joined by sister Hafsa who shares her journey with some of these emotions, and provides us with some powerful advice and direction on how to accept one's self and seek help.

What you'll learn in this episode: * The problem with how Muslims perceive sadness, anxiety and other strong emotions. * What NOT to say to someone who suffers from sadness or anxiety * Why a lack of faith and spirituality is NOT linked with sadness and anxiety * Examples of sadness and anxiety in the Qur'an * How Allah (swt) validates these powerful feelings and emotions, and why it's important to accept them. * The importance of acknowledging that something is wrong * How Hafsa found healing in painting * Why not to share your pain with those who'll bring you down * Practical steps on how to begin your journey of healing * Plus more

This Episode's Ayah of the Day Surah Luqman – [31:29]

The vast majority of us will, at some point in our lives, deal with a mental health problem whether we realise it not, or even like to admit. The topic itself is vast, as are the various conditions, diagnoses and treatments, but for many, finding the right answers can be difficult. We hope to clear the air and educate our community in this episode with **Shaykh Abdul Hameed.**

Its unfortunate that within the Muslim community, mental health can often times be somewhat of a taboo subject, with many Muslims being ignorant on the subject due to lack of education or cultural ignorance. Some Muslims even interpret mental illnesses as a weakness of faith, and advise those who are vulnerable to simply pray more, fear Allah, or completely forget about their situations.

This extremely dangerous approach can lead to many people feeling isolated, lost, confused, and may eventually lead to self harm and even death (e.g. death by suicide).

What is the correct approach to mental health, and how do we as Muslims approach the topic while conforming to our Islamic principles?

What youll learn in this episode: * The definition of mental health * What islam says about mental health * Does having a mental health problem relate to weakness in faith? * The story of Maryam (as) in the Qur’an, and the suicidal statement she made during pregnancy. * What the most difficult time of the Prophet ﷺ life was & how he dealt with with strong bereavement * What are the most common types of mental health? (Including anxiety, depression and low self esteem) * How movies might exaggerate mental illness, and thus gives us an innacurate image of the true nature of mental illness * How one mental health illness can lead to others or manifest in new ways if not diagnosed correctly * Why, and how do people suffer from mental health problems? (The bio psycho-social model) * How we can have a genetic bias towards developing mental health problems * Why dealing with problems are completely normal * Shaykh’s advice on how to seek help * The importance of diet and exercise for healing & increasing one’s mood * The difference between finding a cure and managing mental health * Are there any Du’as we can recite to ask for help? * How some people exploit and victimise individuals suffering from mental health (including a sexual abuse case) * Who should you visit first your Imam or your doctor?

Questions from listeners: 1) what should somebody do if they have suicidal thoughts, or are harming themselves?

2) One way I used to cope with low moods and energy was masturbation. I know this is wrong, and I felt guilty. I started to masturbate instead of self harm. How do you deal with these addictions and dependencies until you can get real help?

3) I’m a 19 year old Muslims girl. There are days when I feel good about myself, but then there are times when I become some sort of evil person. My depression makes me act inappropriately with parents, siblings and friends. What do I do?

4) There’s a war going on in my mind all of the time. It feels like there’s no hidayah at all. Help!

5) Is yoga halal (for healing and exercise?)

The spiritual journey is one that spans our entire lives; we learn, we discover ourselves, we make mistakes, and we grow from them. Along the way, we naturally experience our ups and downs as we journey towards spiritual bliss and closeness to Allah (swt). Although every persons experiences are different, for young coming of age Muslims, there seems to be a common trend as they first discover their passion for the Deen. When the first taste of the sweetness of Iman enters the heart, one usually goes all out; they remove all the haram from their lives, they change their clothes and the way they speak, they change their friend groups, and more often than not, they end up burdening themselves with more than they can handle.

If a slow, balanced approach to the Deen isnt adopted at this early stage, the dangers of falling into somewhat of an identity crisis or developing unhealthy personality and character traits can become inevitable. Not only can this affect the individual themselves, but it can negatively impact their relationship with those around them.

Does the following sound familiar? A young and excited Muslim first discovers their deep passion for the Deen, and then:

  • They make dramatic changes to their entire life (attitude, clothes, friends, etc.)
  • They begin growing their beard / wearing the Hijab
  • They start praying 5 times per day, adding in Tahajjud, and regularly visit the Masjid
  • They start volunteering for various Islamic organisations, taking classes, and watching YouTube lectures until Fajr.

All of these are fantastic, and greatly rewarding. But they may also:

  • Start imposing their opinions on other people
  • Become increasingly judgmental of others, thinking that they are lower than themselves
  • Get a little over-confident with their knowledge of the Deen, only after taking a couple of classes or reading a few books
  • Feel that a good Muslim is only one that wears a thobe / abayah / hijab 24/7 and looks the part
  • Develop Haram police syndrome

We all know somebody like this, or rather, may even have been like this once ourselves. You may even be reading this right now and be thinking Uh oh sounds like me!

Being super excited and deeply passionate about the Deen when one first becomes practicing is a wonderful feeling, and yes, one should aim to better themselves in every way possible. However, setting a standard this high from the get go can soon become burdensome, and inevitably, an individual may experience a major crash with their Iman. Once they are no longer able to uphold these standards, they feel like a lost cause, that their Iman is now gone, and a deep spiritual depression and emptiness takes over their hearts.

This is where the term spiritual steroids stems from. Just like anabolic steroids cause a massive surge in muscle growth at a rapid rate, as soon as the bodybuilder stops them, the body deflates and the muscle can become lost. Similarly, if one tries to cheat their spiritual development and fast track their progress, their Iman may also experience deflation.

How do we avoid this from happening, and how should one approach the Deen in a healthy and balanced manner so as to keep a consistent and steadily growing level of Iman? Join us in this podcast episode with Shaykh Abdul Hameed where he discusses this issue and provides his knowledge, wisdom and advice to those going through, or about to go through this stage of their lives.

What youll learn: * Common reasons why people get off on the wrong foot * What it means to be spiritually hench * The dangers of going too fast, too soon * Why everything eventually goes back to having a sound to an understanding of the Deen (or a lack of) * Why people suffer an identity crisis and arent comfortable with themselves * Misconceptions as to how pious or religious Muslims are supposed to be / look like * Shaykh Abdul Hameeds advice on how to develop a balanced approach towards the Deen

Leave a comment! If you have a question for Shaykh or want to share your story / tip on how to keep a balanced approach to the Deen, especially when first getting started, leave a comment below.

Intentions play an important role in our everyday lives as Muslims. In Islam, we are taught that our intentions can determine whether or not our deeds will be accepted by Allah ï·», and moreover, how little or how much we'll be rewarded for those deeds (or even punished).

In part of a famous Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad ï·º, we're taught that:

"Actions are judged by their intentions, and each person will be rewarded according to their intention"[Bukhari, Muslim]

This Hadith is incredibly important, and teaches us that if our intentions are good, we shall receive good. If they are bad, we may potentially fall into sin. The purer we make our intentions when doing a good deed, the more Allah ï·» will reward us.

When we think of perfecting our intentions, we typically do so within the context of our daily acts of worship: prayer, dhikr, reciting the Qur'an, and a multitude of other good deeds we can perform.

For example, we know that somebody who prays just because they 'have to' vs somebody who does so purely for the love of Allah ï·» and to draw nearer to Him, are not equal in the rewards they'll receive. No doubt, merely fulfilling our obligations because we 'have to' will still earn us rewards, but not nearly as much as compared to the latter example.

Is it possible, therefore, to apply the same logic with regards to intentions to the other mundane acts we perform everyday, such as eating, sleeping, studying, going to work, etc.? The answer is YES, and that's exactly what you'll learn in this episode.

What you'll learn: * The importance of pure intentions * Examples of pure intentions me may make with regular acts of worship * What intention hacking is, and how to do it * How to turn everyday actions into a form of worship

What are your dreams? Do you have goals?

Almost all of our thinking is controlled by the questions we ask ourselves.

We start by asking ourselves: 'Where do I want to be in 5 years time? Or even 1 year?

Some people don't like this question and respond with:

"Don't ask me! I'm spontaneous, I don't like schedules or rigid plans..

Practical step 1:

  • Take time out, away from all. Hit pen to paper / Keyboard to Laptop
  • Regardless of feasibile etc. Splash onto page ALL your goals, dreams, desires.
  • Cannot stress this enough. Its perfectly fine that these will evolve over time.
  • Once you have a lot on your paper. Pick from that list and then make it very clear what you want and by when. Again, CLARITY!
  • Put deadlines on yourself.

People are often so worried about not knowing exactly what to do, and this can prevent them from getting started. Or often times they want to do it perfectly, that they never actually get on with it. Remember Experience is your best teacher!
Get stuck in, take massive action, make mistakes and Learn, Learn, Grow!!

Bad example of Goal:

"I want to make money

Good example of goal

"I intend to make £1000 in exactly 1 months time

Practical step 2 – 'Chunking'
Take a huge task and break it down. This turns into small daily victories, which then creates strong momentum.

IF that doesn't work , break it down even more.

A beautiful piece of Advice given to me by Ustadh Adam Kelwick, Liverpool.

"If you wish to gain a particular quality in life, then find someone who has that quality and spend time with them
Find people who are driven and It'll rub off on you. "Who you spend time with, is who you become

Another Question to ask yourself:

Why do you want that goal?

When you ask that question and dig deep, you get interesting answers..
To be liked? To be happy? To feel good? You'll find a lot boils down to achieving a certian Emotion.
Example: The Wifi at home has broken. You could fix it yourself, but you cannot be bothered. However, because of the greater wellbeing of the family, for their satisfaction and happiness, you fixed the Wifi. You had a greater WHY, and your emotional connection to your family's happiness pushed you to achieve that goal.

Find a reason that's GREATER than yourself. You'll move mountains, metaphorically. Make this reason fun, exciting, creative! Something that'll drive you and motivate you to the core.

When you do it for others, you can save lives, raise money, educate, and many others great things.

Most important, attach this goal to ultimately pleasing Allah. (this also makes sure the goal is halal!)

Tip: Be around people who have the same types of intentions. This will empower you further.

Intentions

When you intentions are pure, our efforts will be filled with Barakah. With barakah, we get MORE done and achieve amazing things.

Example: Eating

We can eat to simply enjoy the taste. And this is permissible. Or we can eat with the intention of nourishing ourself so that we can work more and earn a halal living, repair our bodies, worship better and longer, etc. This intention has already quadroopled!

Practical tip 3 – constantly FEED your mind
Listen to podcasts, read books, watch educational/instructional videos. Always be learning.

A strong psychology will pull you through when the mechanics/logistics are frustrating or boring.

You might ask:

'But Why? I like chilling all day, watching TV, playing games, going out with friends and eating good food!'By pushing the boundaries, we reach heightened experiences and find more opportunities. We can GIVE more in life, and BE more in life when we push ourselves.

Note: chilling and enjoying ourselves is fine, but it's about the balance. When we have our priorities sorted, and are working hard, then chilling has its purpose! Leisure time is also enjoyed a lot more when it's followed by a marathon of working REALLY hard!

Progress equals happiness.

Once you start tasting the fruits of your efforts, and cross that border of what you thought you couldn't achieve, your brain says "YEAH! … Now what else can I do? #SnowballEffect

Even if the effort may seem small, just do it! Small progress is still progress.

"Lose no time. Be always employed in something useful. Cut off all unnecessary actions

When you've got some clarity, have set the deadlines, have learned the process of chunking big tasks into smaller ones, get around good company, and have built compelling reasons for your goals, then:

  • It's time to make that decision and take massive action. (Cut off from all other options, commit to something with massive action)
  • Commit to mastery, to give up this idea of just "Trying something

It's not our conditions that shape our destiny, but our decisions.

Final notes & Summary from Hamza

I'd like to make one thing clear.
The quality of your life is the quality of where you live emotionally

We all have a home.

Angry people find a way to be angry, even when life has nothing to be angry about. They always find it.

Sad people find a way to be sad.

Caring people find a way to care for other people.

So one thing you've got to identify is: where are you living? What's your home? What's your habit?

How to change that?

Step 1 is to feed your mind. We all know the phrase "You are what you eat Well, it's the same for the mind.

One of my teachers taught me: "every day stand guard of the door of your mind and feed it something good

Feed your mind every day for 30 minutes, hearing / reading something. Something strong and nutritious for your mind.

Step 2 You've got to strengthen that body of yours!

Fear is physical, and so is stagnation, numbness, sadness and rage. When you go out and change your body by intense workout, a run, or even an intense walk, and the blood is flowing through you, science has shown that this instantly changes your biochemistry. Now your mind and body are working together.

Step 3 Look at so many of the most influential people: they found a mission that is greater than themselves. Something they wanted to aspire to, that matters more than their own pain.

Step 4 You've got to find a role model. Almost everybody finds a role model that makes things real for them.
For example: there is a lady called Sara Blakely the youngest billionaire. When women meet her, they don't just love her billionaire product. They love this woman because she is a role model and show's what's possible.

If you get a role model, it becomes real to you. If you make a goal, get a plan, then take massive action.

Step 5 – Understand that there's always someone worse off than you are I don't care what you've done.
If you can go help somebody worse off, it puts your life in perspective and also remind you that life's not about 'me', it's about 'we'.

I always tell people that the secret to a great life, the secret to living is GIVING!

Even if you've lost your legs, even if you've been through a horrific financial situation, your life can improve, and more importantly, you have a more meaningful life because your life will contribute to the well-being of other people.

**Listen to the Walking Dhikr episode below:** In today's episode of the Deenspiration podcast show, Usman shares an epic technique called 'Walking Dhikr' which allows you to add a WHOLE lot more worship to your day. The great thing about it is that it's super easy. In fact, if you can walk, you're half way there! Yup! If you do any form of walking during the day (which pretty much all of us do!) then you can most definitely implement this technique.

How it works

Walking Dhikr involves taking your favourite phrase of Dhikr, breaking it down into smaller chunks / syllables, and assigning each chunk to a step.

Wait, what?!

It sounds weird, but really, it's easy!

When we walk, it creates a little rhythm – a beat. What we're essentially doing with this technique is following the beat, while reciting the phrase at the same time. When done correctly, both the rhythm of our footsteps and the phrase of Dhikr create a nice flow. It makes taking those steps and walking even more fun and rewarding.

Still confused? Listen to the episode above for a full explanation. You'll be joining in within no time InshaAllah!

The Blessed month of Ramadan is most likely your favourite month of the year, and so it should be! It's the month of the Qur'an, a month full of immense rewards and blessings, a month of forgiveness, a month of community and love, and deep spiritual development. Just amazing!

Now, although many of us look forward to using Ramadan to become the best version of ourselves in terms of our Iman, we tend to forget about, or totally neglect the idea of also becoming the best version of ourselves in terms of our health.

Believe it or not, many of us get FAT during Ramadan. It's weird, right? A lot of us are fasting around three quarters of the day, yet at the end of the month when we step on the scale, we notice that we've added a few pounds. How is that even possible?!

Think about it, what's the one thing most of us make the mistake of doing in Ramadan? I'll give you a clue: it happens after Maghrib, usually makes our eyes pop and our mouths water, and usually results in regret a couple of hours later.

That's right, OVER EATING! We usually eat like crazy once Iftar kicks in and ignore the idea of keeping our diets clean and healthy. So much so that it pretty much defeats the purpose of our fast; we're supposed to be training ourselves to stop being excessive and to let go of our desires, not quadruple how much we indulge in them!

There is nothing wrong with enjoying a lovely Iftar with the family of course, or perhaps throwing the odd Iftar party with the homeboys and homegirls, but this is where we should learn to be extra careful. The last thing we want is for our Ramadan experience to be ruined and for our abilities to worship to be weakened because we feel sluggish, tired and unfit to perform our 'Ibaadah.

So… how do you go about learning the do's and don'ts of nutrition and lifestyle during Ramadan?

In this episode of the Deenspiration podcast, Usman is joined by Amina Khan, founder of the epic health and fitness brand Amanah Fitness. Amina covers a whole lot of practical tips and tricks for how to stay in tip-top shape during Ramadan, ensuring that your body feels nice and energetic throughout the long Taraweeh prayer at night, as well as during the long working day.
