Two conservative political activists from Fearless Debates sat behind a table near the Old Well on Friday, Sept. 19. With signs promoting deportation and rejecting abortion, they drew a crowd of UNC students, faculty and community members. Fearless Debates recently began their Fearless Tour, which sees the team visiting university campuses around the country to discuss hot button political issues.

UNC’s deferred maintenance backlog has grown to over $900 million and counting. The facilities condition index suggests that the average of all UNC Buildings is 0.19 — falling in the poor condition category. In July 2020, the Board of Trustees voted to remove the names of four buildings with racist ties on campus. And now, almost a year later, the University is one step closer to making that happen. As the state and Town of Chapel of Hill have slowly lifted restrictions and the campus community approaches a more normal summer term and fall semester, the University’s jurisdiction over holding students found in violation of University and/or state guidelines may change. Recently, the University has requested that the town extend the joint jurisdiction of UNC and the Town of Chapel Hill Police to include off-campus Greek Life housing. Jurisdiction. Though the University transitioned to remote class delivery, many students have stayed in the Chapel Hill area. With the start of the fall semester today, many students are adapting to the realities of university life amid a global pandemic. The Daily Tar Heel’s Editor-in-Chief Anna Pogarcic spoke to Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz in an exclusive interview last Thursday. On July 16, the Board of Trustees decided on an official policy to rename buildings on UNC’s campus. This follows the BOT decision in June which rescinded its 16-year self imposed moratorium on renaming buildings. On July 6, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced changes to temporary exemptions for students on F-1 and M-1 visas taking online classes in the fall because of the pandemic. Under the exemptions, students who are taking an entirely remote course load are not allowed to remain in the country, and if they do not leave or take measures like transferring to another school with in-person classes, they face potential deportation. Host Evely Forte spoke to international UNC students to get a better sense as to how they are feeling about this federal policy change and what their expectations in response to this policy are for the coming semester. As the fall semester rapidly approaches, many housekeeping and facilities workers have questioned the practicality of implementing safety guidelines for on-campus operations. For example, part of the community standards expected of housekeeping staff involve disinfecting “high-touch surfaces,” like restrooms and elevator buttons, four times a day, which some say is not possible. After a four-year fight for records of the University's sexual assault disciplinary proceedings, the North Carolina Supreme Court ruled May 1 that UNC will be required to release the names of individuals found responsible for rape, sexual assault or related acts of sexual misconduct. The DTH Media Corporation first filed the lawsuit against UNC in a coalition with three other N.C. media companies in the fall of 2016, claiming the University had violated North Carolina public records law by refusing to release the names, offenses and disciplinary actions for students or faculty found responsible for sexual misconduct. UNC graduate student workers have created a list of demands they would like University leaders to meet in response to COVID-19 conditions. Entitled “Demands for the Immediate Relief of Graduate Workers at UNC-CH,” the statement outlines a variety of graduate student worker concerns, including a 75 percent cost of living adjustment and additional time and funding to complete degrees. Host Evely Forte talks to DTH University staff writer Rachel Crumpler to break down these demands and to better understand how they will impact the UNC campus community.
