He goes with () by Sigur Ros - an album name hard to pronounce! Reflecting on the album, Mark discusses the power of music to transport us back to moments in time and we also debate the importance of understandable lyrics in music, with this LP sung in 'Hopelandic', a made up language.
Sigur Ros of course had success with Hoppípolla from their follow-up album Takk... being used in a series of adverts and TV montages. While JJ72 songs were never used in quite that way, Mark tells us a funny story about a clip of Oxygen appearing on Sky Sports!

This week on The Boys in the Band Podcast we're delighted to be joined by Mark Greaney, formerly the frontman of JJ72.
The band burst out of Dublin at the start of 2000 and were playing big festival shows and supporting huge acts when they were only just turning 20. Mark reflects on that boom and how they capitalised on the buzz around the band.
But within two years Mark says the music scene had changed dramatically. Why? Because of The Libertines, he says. Mark discusses how the sudden shift from bands formed in the late 90s to ones formed in the early years of the 00s changed the landscape.
We discuss how JJ72's two albums were put together, including some of their biggest hits such as Oxygen, and Mark - who works at BIMM Institute Dublin and has taught the likes of Fontaines DC - reveals potential plans for the previously unreleased third album!

This week on The Boys in the Band Podcast we're joined by David Jordan and Jim Maddock from Air Traffic.
One of BBC's Sounds of 2007, Air Traffic were a band in demand and, despite being still in their teens, had record labels fighting for their signatures. They ended up on a major label with EMI - and tell us about the excessive spending they enjoyed as part of that deal.
Sticking with the financials, we also learn about how band members get paid as part of a deal like that. But it wasn't all roses, with the guys discussing the impact of a vicious review in the NME on both their mental health and their trajectory.
In a wide-ranging chat we also find out how the band strangely became really big in Belgium - and why they went out to buy their own personal pool cues during the recording of their album...

Our series of bonus podcasts continues with James Walsh from Starsailor picking his favourite album of the 00s.
James makes the case for Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot as his favourite of the 2000s.
The band actually had to fight to get this released, with their record label refusing to put it out. That led to the band streaming it for free on their website before a different record company released it the following the year.
And it was a good job they fought for it too, with the album critically acclaimed and going on to be a big seller! James explains what makes the album special.

The band burst onto the scene in Leeds and immediately became renowned for their wild live shows, with one of their early gigs inspiring the Kaiser Chiefs' I Predict A Riot. Tom recalls that night - and tries to work out how he ended up losing his trousers and being punched on stage by a bouncer!
The band spent a lot of time on the road with The Cribs and Tom chats about his respect for the Jarman brothers and other bands of the era who inspired them as we discuss how the 00s scene emerged.
The band split in 2007 but gave fans a lockdown treat in 2020 when they finally released their second album 13 years after it had been recorded, so we get the story behind that, too.

The band consisted of singer Damon Albarn (Blur and Gorillaz), bassist Paul Simonon (The Clash), guitarist Simon Tong (The Verve), and drummer Tony Allen (Fela Kuti). With those icons combining together, there are a lot of different influences at play and Matt explains how the sound of the band is hard to pin down - but very special nonetheless.
He also discusses the importance of British music to him and how, as a youngster, the music from these shores captured his imagination and ultimately ended up bringing him and his bandmates together.

Joseph Costello from The Tunics joins us this week on The Boys in the Band Podcast and tells us about the rapid rise of his band who were signed almost immediately after their first central London gig.
They'd actually been banned from playing live by Croydon Council when they were starting out but, taking their inspiration from the Libertines and similar London bands, they were soon snapped up by a record company.

Hope of the States were a band like few others during the 00s indie scene - delivering epic rock music with a powerful message. And on this week's show singer Sam Herlihy tells The Boys in the Band Podcast about the story of the band.
Their break came via a teletext review and their huge sound landed them a big record deal with Sony, which saw them splash out creatively, and Sam reflects on their recording sessions, the music they made and their standout shows.
But sadly, the band were also touched by tragedy with the death of guitarist Jimmi, and Sam pays a moving tribute to him and explains why the band felt they had to carry on the journey they'd started with their friend.

Preston and his band The Ordinary Boys made waves when they emerged on the scene in 2004 with a string of hits and a highly acclaimed debut album. Then they were thrust into the mainstream with Preston's appearance on Celebrity Big Brother in 2006.
There was chart success and intense media scrutiny, which culminated in an infamous episode of Nevermind the Buzzcocks, before the band split in 2008.

Beans On Toast - aka Jay McAllister - was at the heart of the London indie scene in the 2000s.
A prolific alt-folk songwriter, his social commentaries - often in collaboration with some of the era's biggest stars - were turned around in double-quick time. But when he wasn't on stage himself he was running some of the biggest indie club nights in the capital, such as Frog.
Here, he tells The Boys in the Band Podcast how he helped turn the iconic Nambucca pub from a quiet, empty boozer into the epicentre of the London indie scene, with help from his friends Frank Turner, The Holloways, Florence and The Machine and many more.
