Weather forecasting people can predict rain, fine weather or storms with surprisingly impressive accuracy, but only for a short time into the future—just a few days at best. God is different, He knows the end from the beginning. He reveals the future through His prophets in the Bible. Although God does this to strengthen our faith when we see prophecy fulfilled, He also does it to warn us of earth’s closing events, so we will be prepared, and so that He can guide us safely home. Our study today will uncover more of this truth.

Today the world is awash with the entertainment industry churning out programs involving angels, magic, and the living dead. Many Christian denominations teach that a person’s soul immediately goes to heaven or hell when someone dies. There was an earnest interest in the time prophecies of Daniel during the early 19th century, specifically the cleansing of the sanctuary (the 2,300 year prophecy which ended in 1844). God has offered His peace to a chaotic world. Our world needs peace and hope for the future—people know it, but most don’t want it, not God’s way anyway. ‘The Trial of God (as it was held on February 25, 1649, in Shamgorod)’ is a fictional play Elie Wiesel wrote about God as a defendant in a mock trial where He is accused of permitting the massacre of His children. In a plot twist, the author of the play claims such a trial occurred in the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz, but historians question the accuracy of that claim. Whether there was such a trial or not, there is a cosmic trial of sorts taking place right now, where God’s character is called into question and His love tested. Is He truly a loving God or a selfish tyrant? Our study will look into this Great Controversy theme.

Searching people have many questions: how can a God of love allow so much evil to exist? Or, why do bad things happen to good people? Today we commence a new series on the conflict between good and evil, which deals with these types of questions. Today’s lesson goes back to the very beginning: Lucifer’s rebellion in heaven, which kicked off the cosmic conflict between good and evil. Some Psalms declare a desire to visit and dwell securely in Zion. Of the 150 Psalms, 20 specifically mention Zion. Is Zion a place, a political ideology, a symbol, or a theology? The biblical writers use it as a blend of all these things. Today we will look into and discuss these characteristics, with the desire to understand why there is a longing for God’s people to be in Zion.

The Psalms contain some of the most beautiful and powerful poetry ever written in praise to God. “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come before His presence with singing!” the psalms declare. God deserves our highest praise because He is our creator, sustainer, and redeemer. But more so the Psalms declare that He alone is God and He reigns in Majesty!

The final book of the Bible is the Revelation of Jesus Christ. The book contains exciting themes such as God’s plan to finally eradicate sin, death, and suffering from the universe. But it also reveals Jesus and His plan to prepare His people for that time. God has a mission to sharing the good news of the gospel, and He invites us to be part of that mission.

One of the most inspiring accounts of “cross-cultural ministry” in the Bible can be found in the book of Esther. All of us are influenced, and limited, by the assumptions of our cultures and worldviews. For us to successfully present the gospel to people who have vastly different views, homework is necessary. Homework that identifies our special bridge of common interest, allowing us to address their needs and earn their favour. We will be most successful if we’re flexible, resourceful, and open-minded in regards to new (and even unfamiliar) approaches to God’s mission. The key to our witnessing is always asking the Holy Spirit to guide us, teach us, and direct us.

This could be because they are naturally more positive thinkers, or their happy disposition attracts more friends and loved ones closer to them. When a country is invaded throughout history, the invaded country responds in an attempt to defend its territory and defeat the enemy. Satan has invaded Earth, Jesus even called Satan ‘the ruler of this world’. Thankfully Jesus came to our world to conquer the power of evil. Although the war is not yet over, victory is certain. On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech to more than 200,000 people. In that speech he said “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.” Six decades on, much of the world—sadly—still judges people purely on external appearances. Nearly 2000 years ago the apostle Paul gave the true solution for genuine brotherhood and reconciliation among people of all nations. Today’s study will discuss the solution Paul offered.

Last week’s study noted the central issue in the world being worship of the Creator God. God’s power was shown through the creation of our world—as recorded in the Genesis account. The fourth of the ten commandments asks us to remember the Sabbath day for “God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh day.” Contrary to this command, some people today espouse the need for a Sabbath, rather than God’s requirement of us observing the Sabbath. The Bible says that each one of us, individually, will one day appear before God and be judged with eternal consequences. But this judgement is not only about us. The book of Revelation focuses on the culmination of the great controversy with Lucifer—that rebel angel who challenged the justice, fairness, and wisdom of God. In 1913, 26 year old Arthur Momand published a comic strip that went on to be syndicated for the next 25 years. The Comic Strip was based on his experiences trying to live in affluent Nassau County, Long Island NY. The comic strip was entitled “Keeping up with the Joneses.” That phrase is still commonly used today when striving to match your neighbours in spending and social standing. While we may smile at this phrase, at its heart, the phrase describes covetousness — a condition so deadly that God’s Ten Commandments to prohibit it. Today’s lesson will discuss that important topic.

When we think that our Godhead (Father, Son and Holy Spirit), is the creator of the universe, the idea of giving Him something seems strange. Winston Churchill understood the strength and cohesion found within a society that is built upon the family structure. As humans, we develop our characters and learn our values from our families. Each person in the family has responsibilities and obligations, and only when these are fulfilled does the family keep functioning. We are also part of God’s family, and that’s really just a bigger version of our smaller earthly family units—we learn values, we build characters, and we help each other out. Jesus told wailing mourners that Jairus’s daughter was not dead, but sleeping—then He raised her from the dead. When Lazarus was dead, Jesus told His disciples that Lazarus sleeps, and He was going to wake him up—in perhaps the most spectacular public miracle of His ministry, Jesus then raised Lazarus from the dead. These stories seem to be solid proof of Jesus teaching death is like a sleep. There are, however, other sections of scripture, which are often used to advocate for a ‘sleepless’ death and doctrines of an immortal soul. One of Christianity’s great paradoxes is singing and praising God while facing suffering and death. How did the martyrs sing hymns of praise while perishing in the flames? The following truth may sound strange, but what we can see is often only transitory—it does not last. God is invisible, yet eternal. The forces of evil are out of sight, yet no less real. God offers us indestructible hope during our crucibles. The Apostle Paul even gloried in his tribulations, writing (in Romans 5:3-4) tribulations produce patience, patience produces experience, and experience produces hope. Joseph stands out as a great patriarchal figure, similar to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Although he was the 11th son of Jacob, he was the first son of Jacob’s true love, Rachel. Joseph’s early life with his brothers was turbulent, and Jacob’s family was heading for trouble. While Abraham was old and had no children, he believed God’s promise that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky. That faith was tested. Abram and his wife Sarai obeyed God’s call to travel south from Haran to Canaan. After a 700km journey they arrived in Canaan—at a place called Sichem. A covenant is made with Abram to give the land to Abram’s children. But Abram was 75 years old (and Sarai 65), and they didn’t have any children. Were they really going to have children in their old age? The years passed and still no children. Did God really mean what He’d said? Mention the word Babel without context, and it will mean different things to different people. It can be the name of an island in Tasmania; the name of a journal of linguistics; the name of a minor planet; or even a music label. In Genesis 1 God pronounces His six days of creation as being “very good.” But Genesis 3 records that the crowning act of creation (the first two humans, Adam and Eve) disobey God, and the curse of sin enters the world. Adam and Eve are cast out of Eden. Genesis 4 has the tragedy of Cain killing Abel and Cain’s offspring separating themselves from God. Genesis 5 outlines the chronology from Adam down to a man called Noah. And in Genesis 6 God declares His creation is no longer very good, and is instead continually evil. Today we are going to discuss the role of Noah as God uses a global flood to deal with the prevailing evil on Earth.

Paul’s letter to the Hebrews was intended to inspire and encourage the Hebrew readers with their faith in Jesus while they were experiencing persecution. In Hebrews 5 and 6, Paul admonishes his audience because they are feeding upon the milk of the Bible, he says it would benefit them to migrate to the more solid food of God’s word. Those who do this find their senses awakened to more accurately discern between both good and evil (see Hebrews 5:14). Today we conclude our series looking at the Book of Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy means “second law,” and it contains a series of appeals Moses gave the Israelites as they approached the borders of the promised land. In essence Moses says: “You are finally about to enter the Promised Land! Once you do, don’t forget what the Lord has done for you, nor what He asks of you now — to love Him with all your heart and soul, and to demonstrate that love by obeying all His commandments.” Although the children entered the Promised Land, Moses only saw it from afar. To close this series, we will investigate Moses’ death and the wonderfully surprising event that followed.

While some Christians believe the Old Testament no longer has any authority or relevance, Jesus (and other inspired writers of the New Testament) used the Jewish Scriptures as an authority in their life, their actions, and their teachings. In this way they affirmed what Mark recorded: “the Scriptures must be fulfilled” (Mark 14:49). The Old Testament was quoted, alluded to, and referenced by the Gospel writers and the Apostle Paul, therefore the Old Testament has authority in our lives too.

The name “Jonah” has entered into the English language as a proverb. To “be a Jonah” is a negative thing. Jonah, however, was actually a real person. Jesus himself spoke of the man. The Christian God of the Bible has a special liking for the number seven. The seventh day was the sabbath day, the seventh year was the sabbatical year, and after 49 years (7 × 7) came the year of Jubilee. The seventh new moon was the day of trumpets, the seventh month of the year was for festivals. The Passover lasted seven days, seven weeks lie between Passover & Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles lasted seven days too. Even Jewish boys were circumcised at seven days old. In the Book of Revelation there were seven churches, seven seals, seven trumpets, and seven last plagues. Please join us today as we look at the most important ‘seven’ of them all—the seventh day Sabbath—and why God made it holy.

Even before our human race would dash off to our self-imposed stressful lives, God placed a day each week as a marker, and as a living memory aid for rest. God wanted this day to be a time for us to stop and deliberately enjoy life—a day to be and not do, to celebrate the gift of grass; air; wildlife; water; people; and, most of all, Him: the Creator of every good gift. Many stories have come to light through the media of people who have been able to forgive perpetrators of crime. The act of forgiveness has been healing both for the person forgiven, and for the one offering forgiveness. In this study, we will look at revenge and forgiveness not only through the eyes of Joseph in the Old Testament, but also Jesus Christ in the New Testament. So, have your Bible at hand as we begin.

In her classic 1960s prize-winning novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” American writer Harper Lee has her main character say “you can choose your friends but you sure can't choose your family.” Sometimes our relationships with family members can be difficult—to say the least! But we can find peace in such circumstances. Today we are going to look at a remarkable story of a young man who grew up in a troubled, dysfunctional family, and how he found peace amongst life’s hardships. Joseph suffered rejection, physical and verbal abuse from his brothers and then slavery, false accusation and imprisonment. He could have become embittered and hateful. But he remained positive and hopeful. We are going to look into his remarkable life and see how he prevailed.

The Bible states that “All we like sheep have gone astray” (Isaiah 3:6), “we have all sinned…” (Romans 3:23), and that “Sin separates us from God” (Isaiah 59:2). All is not lost, however. There is a means by which we can receive rest from the restlessness of a sinful life. When Pr Clive Nash lived on a farm, his family noticed a strange behaviour in their hive of bees. The bees were located high up in the hollow of a eucalyptus tree. Pr Nash’s family could not understand why the bees were so restless and agitated. But the bees sensed something that the humans could not see. A little while later, a big branch fell from the tree. For the bees, that was a major event that caused great restlessness among them. Similarly, sin can cause human beings to be equally restless. In this episode, we will look at illustrations of human restlessness that are a direct result of a failure to accept the peaceful rest that Jesus Christ offers. Have your Bible handy as we begin.

Our subject today is “Covenant Law.” When greeted by the word “law,” it would be natural to think of restrictions, maybe police officers handing out traffic infringements, or judges prescribing jail sentences and other punishments. We usually associate law with punishments. In biblical terms, however, we should actually connect law with the positive attributes of order, harmony, stability, and love. Yes, ‘law’ and ‘love,’ can these two words really be used in the same sentence? Join us as we seek to understand Covenant Law as revealed through God’s Word.

The theme of the Exodus is vitally significant for Jews and Christians alike. Today we continue our series on God’s covenants (or agreements) with humanity. So far, we have looked at the history of God’s dealings with us. He made this world and it was sinless. Then disobedience, sin and death came in. But hope was not lost, because God began disclosing His plan for redeeming and restoring fallen humanity. He disclosed this to Adam and Eve, to Noah, and to Moses. In today’s study, we will move forward in time to Abram and see more of God’s love revealed.

In 2016 Clive Nash, one of our Let God Speak presenters, was privileged to see a parchment dating back to the year 1638 in the Museum of Edinburgh, Scotland. It bore the signatures of about 4,150 men. They signed what became known as The National Covenant. Today we will define the word “covenant,” and overview the various covenants that God made with His people. Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah would be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace. The Messiah would embody both the power and the presence of the God of Israel, and would bring about the fulfilment of God’s promise to David. This appealed to Israel’s desire for a deliverer who would bring national greatness and release them from their enemies. But in stark contrast to this, Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah was going to serve and suffer. Today we will look into this incredible suffering Messiah.

There is a saying, “Like Father, like son,” which is generally true. There are, of course, exceptions. Take Hezekiah for example. It’s difficult to imagine a son more different than his father. The reign of his father, King Ahaz, was a moral, political and spiritual disaster. The Bible describes the Judean King as an evil king that followed the gods and wicked practices of the nations around him. Ahaz led the nation into apostasy, desecrated the Sanctuary, and set up pagan altars in Jerusalem. After 16 years as king he died, leaving his son Hezekiah to take the reigns. When Hezekiah took control of Judah he immediately got to work to make things right. Today we will focus on the actions of his son, King Hezekiah.

One of the most beautiful and powerful things that God has given us is the ability to choose. He took a big risk by giving us that power of choice, but He did it because He loved us. Some choices that we face in life have fairly similar outcomes with no major consequences either way. But there are some choices with vastly different outcomes, and if we choose the wrong path, it can end up being much more difficult than we initially thought.
On 28 June 1914, three cars took a wrong turn down a side street in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia. When one of the passengers in the third car realised what had happened, he called out to the driver to stop and reverse. Unfortunately, as the driver was reversing, he stalled the car close to where a man was standing with a pistol hidden in his jacket. The assassin couldn’t believe his luck! He quickly walked up to the car, and at point-blank range shot the VIP passengers; Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie.
That one wrong turn not only left three young Austrian children as orphans. It also dragged an entire planet into its first world war. Fast-forward Four years, and 40 million people had lost their lives. Sometimes wrong turns can lead us down very difficult, even deadly paths.

Sometimes we find ourselves in very difficult circumstances. We wonder ‘why is this difficulty happening to me?’, ‘how do I make sense of this?’, and ‘how can I get out of it?’ Today, we will examine a crisis faced by a king of Judah. Although he lived more than 2,700 years ago, the solution to his predicament applies equally well to us today. After King Solomon died in 930BC, the 12 tribes of Israel split into two nations with 10 tribes in the north called Israel, and 2 tribes in the south called Judah. While all were descendants from Jacob, the history of the two neighbouring kingdoms was far from harmonious. The Bible records that the kings of Israel were evil and the kings of Judah were a mixture of righteous and evil. Today we will discuss King Ahaz.

When we think about education, we normally think of going to school—primary school, high school, TAFE, university. We think of classrooms, whiteboards, timetables and assignments. However, there is another important place where education occurs: the church! Let’s explore how significant the role of the church is in the learning process.
The Harvard Business Review recently ran an article with a fascinating title: “The Surprising Power of Questions.” The authors (Alison Brooks and Leslie John) say that questioning is a missed opportunity, and it is a powerful tool for unlocking value.
Over 80 years ago, Dale Carnegie wrote his famous book: How to Win Friends and Influence People. “Be a good listener. Ask questions the other person will enjoy answering,” he said. Even still, the article in Harvard Business Review went on to say “Most people still fail to heed Carnegie’s sage advice.”

C S Lewis, the 20th century atheist who became a Christian, once said, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen; not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” It is like that with the Christian Bible. For someone who is trying to figure out what is real truth, the world can feel like a very confusing place. People have so many varying ideas and worldviews, and they all claim to be telling the truth. It can feel like quite a confusing maze! How do we know which worldview is true? The good news is this; through the Bible, God has revealed to us His transcendent understanding of the world. In this study we will explore God’s worldview, and how we can share it with others.
In 1999, Warner Brothers Studios produced what is now considered to be one of the greatest science fiction films ever created. The Matrix. A very thought-provoking film on many levels. The basic premise is this: people are trapped inside a Matrix, but don’t realise that they trapped. It takes a computer nerd (called Neo) to free people from this Matrix. Reflect on the message of that film, as you do, you might detect parallels between it and the biblical theme of salvation, though the film’s version is a bit distorted.
The critical problem in the film, is that reality is not what it seems: we believe we’re living ordinary lives, going to work in the morning, and coming home to our families in the evening. But the reality is nothing like that. That’s simply an illusion—a computer simulation. The film’s plot says that the truth is more complicated, we are actually trapped inside a giant Matrix, and highly intelligent machines are using us, like a human farm, and are harvesting our energy. In the film Neo needed to come to understand that truth, and then he could save all of humanity.

The law of God is a transcript of His character. It reveals to us what God is like and what is important to Him. God’s Law also teaches us what it means to live lives of love, of faith and of obedience to Christ. Today’s Bible study will examine these truths.

We have been told that it would be well for us to spend a thoughtful hour each day contemplating the life of Christ. In particular, we should dwell on the closing scenes. When you stop to consider the tremendous sacrifice that Jesus made, it will melt your heart and lead you to make some fairly significant decisions in your life. That’s our focus for today.
