In this episode, the entire team gets together for the first time (in the same room) for Episode 100. We take a look back at 2021 and reflect on the incredible and at times challenging year that it was for sport. This year we have been incredibly fortunate to be joined by guests from all walks of life within the sports industry and across many different organisations including; Football Australia, the AFL, Sport Australia, the Australian Olympic Committee, Basketball Australia, Netball Australia, Athletics Australia, alongside a heap of other Australian professional clubs.

Peter has gone from strength to strength throughout his career, being the CEO across major football organisations such as South Melbourne FC, Perth Glory, Football Victoria, and currently at Football Australiaas the Head of Marketing, Communications and Corporate Affairs.

We learn about Peter’s wealth of experiences and insights both from a general perspective, but also in football. In this episode, we chat with CEO of AusCycling, Marne Fechner. Marne speaks with us about her somewhat unconventional path to becoming the CEO of two major national sporting organisations. Marne, a Deakin University diploma graduate, spent time interstate in Queensland for her first full-time job before making her way back to Victoria.

Marne has spent her time as the CEO of the Netball World Cup in 2015, Netball Australia, and currently AusCycling. During the podcast, she speaks about her time at these organisations and the legacies she wanted to leave in her wake. She also touches on her different roles and her passion for people and culture within organisations.

In this episode, we speak with CEO of Commonwealth Games Australia, Craig Phillips. Craig joins us with a wealth of experience which began with a Diploma of Teaching before quickly transitioning into the elite side of the sports industry. Craig spent just under 24 years at the Australian Olympic Committee in multiple positions before finding himself in his current role as the CEO of Commonwealth Games Australia.

We ask Craig about the joint document that the AOC and CGA put to the Federal Government - Sport: Powering Australia’s Future (10+10), as well as what it has been like to work through many Olympic and Commonwealth Games. Additionally, we touch on Craig's thoughts surrounding legacy and how important an Olympics or Commonwealth Games are outside of just the event days.

In today’s guest episode, we have the pleasure of speaking with David Stevenson. Dave has a CV to behold, having achieved so much at home in Australia but also abroad. Dave spent a very respectable 17 years working for none other than Nike, working his way up from an Assistant Store Manager in NikeTown Melbourne, to the VP and GM of Sales in Emerging Markets working in Portland, USA.

We also chat about all things AFL which has been a huge part of his life for the past 6 years. Dave is the former CEO of the Western Bulldogsand now GM of Operations in the AFL. We hear how he and his team have managed the difficulty of back to back covid impacted seasons where he has led successful projects such as the 2020 and 2021 GF, Return to Crowds, and Return to Play.

We also touch on his involvement at the Western Bulldogs during their 2016 Premiership Year.

Tilly is a power woman who has completed her double degree at Deakin University, and is now set to graduate from the Masters in Sport Management this year.

We chat to Tilly about all things to do with building relationships and volunteering, in which she has done this in multitude over the past several years. Tilly also speaks to us about the importance of being your own cheerleader and that hard work pays off. With her two most recent jobs being scored as a result of her determination. Tilly previously working at TLA Worldwide, before a quick turn around found her at Cricket Australia as the League Operations Coordinator.

Jordyn discusses her journey into the sports industry which began with a move interstate from Tasmania to Victoria. She discusses the importance of gaining experience in the industry whilst studying and talks about her roles with Event Workforce Group and as a volunteer at the 2019 Presidents Cup.

Since graduating Jordyn has managed to land a full-time position at Netball Victoria as the Competitions Coordinator and discusses how COVID-19 has impacted her role and how different work has been from a 'normal' year. She also talks about her rare achievement of holding a Guinness World Record with her the Generation Netball Club.

We speak with Zane Gelsi who is currently in his final year undertaking a Bachelor of Sports Media at Holmesglen. He has been very proactive throughout his studies, with multiple volunteer and internship positions across local sporting organisations, including the Ministry of Sport, Coburg FC in the VFL, and an upcoming role with Motorsport Australia and 1116SEN.

His dedication has led to an opportunity to work as a Video Edit Assistant within the AFL’s media team, working alongside media personnel like Damian Barrett and Nat Edwards. This is a fantastic opportunity for any prospective sports media and journalism students to hear from someone making the most of his opportunities at such an early stage in his career.

In this episode, we speak with the National Recruiting Manager of the Adelaide Football Club, Hamish Ogilvie. Hamish joins us with a wealth of experience in the AFL world as he enters his 16th year with the Crows as part of the recruitment team. Hamish discusses his pathway to the industry and just how different and unrealistic it was to pursue a full-time career in the sports industry in the 1980's after graduating from school.

From part-time roles with Port Adelaide, 5 years at AFL Tasmania as State Development Coach and ample other coaching and development roles prior to working for the Crows, Hamish is respected as one of the most reliable and well-spoken industry professionals. He talks about all things development, coaching and the different aspects of his role such as the all-important National Draft night and how trades are initiated within the AFL.

We are joined by university graduate and Collingwood Football Netball Club's, Bianca Litchfield. Bianca graduated with a Bachelor of Science before completing a Master's degree in Applied Sport Science in 2020. Whilst undergoing her Masters, Bianca interned in the high-performance department at the Collingwood Football Club where she was able to leave a positive impression and a strong regard for her professionalism. Post-study, she was able to land a position for the Magpies in the Super Netball League as Performance Analyst & GPS/LPS Coordinator.

We discuss the ample experiences Bianca had prior to studying in the sports industry, as well as how a sponsored social media advertisement paved the way for her to undergo postgrad study in the sports industry.

In today’s guest episode, we finish off our Olympic-themed month with a bang and speak with the Head of Games Operations and Sports Services at the Australian Olympic Committee, Luke Pellegrini. Luke joins us from quarantine in Australia after having traveled back from Tokyo for the Olympic Games. After having a career in the legal world, Luke transferred into the sports industry after moving to Sydney and completing a Masters in Sports Business. Prior to his involvement at the AOC, Luke made contributions at AFL SportsReady as a State Manager and SRi as a Senior Consultant.

We ask Luke about his involvement in this year's Tokyo Olympics and get the inside goss on what it was like to be on the ground at the Games. We also touch on his transition from corporate life into the sports industry and his motivations behind this, his leadership approach and the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

Since 2017, Rohan decided to head down the path of elite sport which saw him join the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) as Athlete Wellbeing & Engagement Advisor. This eventuated into Rohan pursuing his current role with Hockey Australia in the same area of work.

Discussions are centered around the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the impact the postponing and COVID-19 have had on the athletes in the lead-up to the Games.

Throughout his career, Mitch has held multiple positions at the Cats, Playcorp and the St Kilda Football Club which has led to his current role today as GM of Consumer Business at the Saints. Mitch touches on his philosophy of getting a foot in the door at an organisation and working extremely hard which ultimately led to the professional growth opportunities he has had at the Saints. Mitch also explores the environment and culture of an AFL club and how it compares to an organisation such as Playcorp who work with all 18 clubs.

We speak with recent graduate Vincent Chungue who completed a double degree of Exercise & Sport Science/Business (Sport Management) at Deakin University. During his time at university, Vincent made the most of his placement opportunities by managing to land two different roles within the Melbourne Football Club which covered both sides of his degree.

Vincent elaborates on how his placements and volunteer opportunities during his time at university grew his network within the Melbourne Football Club which ultimately led to his current role as a Football Analyst for the AFL and AFLW teams at the Melbourne Football Club.

In this episode, we continue our 'Sport Student Series' where we have discussions with recent graduates and current students. We speak with recent graduate Cameron Gardner who completed a bachelor's degree of Business (Sport Management) at Deakin University. Cameron made the most of his time at Deakin by taking advantage of the many opportunities presented to him, none more so than his initiative to take part in the Indian Sport Management Study Tour in 2019.

During his time at university, Cameron worked various roles at his local football club, Emmaus St Leo's and was lucky enough to land a position as Venue Manager at Social Sport. Cameron discusses the challenges involved with graduating from his degree in 2020 and how he approached applying for jobs post-graduation which ultimately led him to his current position as Operations Assistant at Cheeta Teamwear.

In this episode, we speak with Matt Soroczynskiwho is the Active Reserve Liaison Officer at the Cardinia Shire Council. Previously, Matt has been Assistant Coach of the Narre Warren Football Club u19's team in addition to coaching the senior football team at St. John's Regional College. Matt discusses his passion for coaching and how these experiences ultimately led him to land his current role at the Melbourne Football Club as Academy Assistant Coach for the youth girls.

We chat to Matt about his choice to undertake a traineeship via AFL SportsReady rather than opting into the traditional university pathway. Additionally, Matt gives insight into just how much behind-the-scenes work is required to get local sporting competitions prepared prior to the season and touches on some of the challenges faced by the Cardinia Shire Council during 2020.

Reuben started SportsGrad while still at university before landing a role as a Digital Commercial Specialist at Cricket Australia straight out of uni. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, Reuben saw the opportunity to relaunch the SportsGrad platform in July 2020, where many goals and milestones have been reached. In our chat, we discuss with Reuben what he sees as the biggest challenge for those looking to enter the sports industry, the skills and attributes organisations find valuable, his time at Cricket Australia, how SportsGrad came about and what motives him.
