The Scope of Practice Podcast: Recent Episodes

Brent Lacey and Doctor Podcast Network

Dr. Brent W. Lacey, M.D. teaches healthcare professionals how to manage their businesses successfully and master their personal finances. Most physicians and dentists enter their profession with large amounts of personal debt, and beyond that - they begin working with no knowledge of how to actually run a clinical practice. You should be able to help your patients and do what you love without being stressed by all the other obligations that come with managing your medical practice. Dr. Lacey interviews physicians and other industry experts on topics such as physician burnout, financial independence, business management, leadership, personal growth, marriage, parenting, side hustles, marketing and branding, and medical education. You shouldn’t have to feel overwhelmed by the pressures of running your practice or by your own personal finances. Restore the joy you receive from helping your patients, knowing you have the knowledge and skills to handle all the other responsibilities that come with that. Hit “subscribe” and get ready to change your life.

Episode 100 - This is a bittersweet episode for me, since it’s going to be my final podcast. The last 2 years has been a phenomenal journey for all of us. I’ve gotten emails from so many of you telling me how valuable this content has been, and I’m so grateful to have been part of your journey. I set out to create a platform to empower physicians to take control of their careers, their families, and their personal finances. My hope was to embolden you with knowledge and encouragement so you can live your best life on your terms. Now, after over 75,000 downloads, 100 weekly episodes, and 19 Sunday Specials, I hope I’ve given you some of those tools that you need.

That’s why I’m so excited about today’s discussion. As physicians, I think we know better than anyone else what we need to take care of our patients. The government isn’t coming to help us. The government is full of people who don’t know or can’t understand how to care for patients because they’ve never had to do it. You’re a physician. You should be the one in charge of making decisions for your patients. If we’re going to make that a reality, we have to start by taking charge of ourselves.

Episode 98 -When did the phrase, “I’m busy” become a badge of honor? I’ve been wrestling with this lately. When did we get to a point when someone asks “How’s it going?” and we reply “It’s busy” like it’s something we’re proud of? I think part of it comes from the mistaken impression the busy-ness equals accomplishment. It’s all too easy for us to get caught up in the idea that being busy means we’re getting stuff done, or that we’re accomplishing everything we want to do. Sometimes being busy just means running around putting out fires and never getting to the things that actually matter to you. Today’s guest is going to teach us how to get “un-busy” so we can reclaim our time and our sanity and make room for the things that are truly important to us. It's time to get Unbusy.

She is the creator of our new online course, “Residency-Proof Your Marriage.” As a follow up to our recent Marriage and Money, M.D. summit, I thought it would be good to hear the perspective of a physician spouse on how to make a marriage work throughout the course of a medical career with all its pressures and challenges. Hannah is amazing, and I think you’ll really enjoy hearing her discussion today.

Episode 87 - Today I’m going to do something a little different. I’m bringing you two of my most popular talks from the recent Marriage and Money, M.D. Summit. We had over 1300 people register for the conference, and the speakers did an absolutely phenomenal job! Today we ask, "Can you really have it all?"

This first conversation is with Drs. Nii and Renée Darko. They met in medical school and married after a 10-year courtship. When they realized they were drowning in almost $700,000 of student loan debt and living paycheck to paycheck without much in savings and zero investments, they made a pact to pay off their student loan debt in 15 years. In only 3 short years, not only were they free of student loan debt, but during their debt payoff, they cash flowed several rounds of infertility treatments and quit their jobs to become entrepreneurs, starting 3 businesses.

Our next speaker is Dr. Kate Mangona. She and her husband Victor, are active and passive real estate investors in over 3 thousand multifamily units and single-family rentals and they lead a Multifamily Masterclass course where they teach others how to passively invest in real estate to grow their wealth as they sleep. Kate hosts the Medicine, Marriage & Money podcast and leads the Medicine, Marriage, & Money Coaching Program where she helps married women physicians with children spend less time arguing with their spouse, and more time reigniting the sparks once felt during their honeymoon.

Meet Jimmy Turner, M.D.

On the outside, Dr. Turner looked like he had it all together. From his days as the student body president of his medical school to the teaching awards and randomized control trial publications as an attending physician. He even had a successful online business as a podcaster and course creator.

But, on the inside, he was miserable. He constantly felt stuck. Burned out and overwhelmed, he kept looking for the next accomplishment or achievement to make him happy.

Dr. Turner didn’t realize until much later that there is a name for this. It is called an Arrival Fallacy – The idea that the “next thing” would be what finally makes him happy. He felt trapped in a life he didn't want.

It was through mastering his mindset and his financial situation that he was finally able to live his life on his terms. Now, through coaching for physicians, Dr. Turner helps other doctors find the freedom he has found by helping them master their mindset, their money, and their balance.

Episode 75 - Evidence-based medicine has been a big focus in the medical field. If you can’t back up a plan with some kind of study or data point, we’re going to question whether it’s the right plan. We don’t apply that same level of scientific inquiry to all situations though. Take our businesses for example. Are you committing yourself to data-backed decision making on a regular basis when it comes to hiring and firing, or taxes, business growth strategies, I think we tend to go with our gut or just try things and see what happens. There’s a place for that, but I think we ignore data a lot of times in our businesses and just act on instinct. That's why I'm so excited to introduce this week's podcast guest, Dr. Fisayo, Ositelu.

Dr. Ositelu is the cofounder and CEO of Gentem Health, a Silicon Valley-based technology company on a mission to help private medical practices stay independent by simplifying, accelerating, and maximizing reimbursements through its platform and service. Dr. Ositelu received his MD and MBA degrees from Stanford School of Medicine and Stanford Graduate School of Business. Prior to founding Gentem, he worked in healthcare private equity and at the now well-known startup company, NerdWallet. He’s going to talk to us today about how to take our evidence-based strategies that we use in medicine and apply those to our business. This may sound like a statistics class, but I promise it’s not, so don’t tune out. These techniques we’re going to talk about today could save you tens of thousands of dollars just by learning what you need to pay attention to in your business.

Sunday Special 16 - My guest today is Dr. Tolu Olabintan. She’s a family medicine physician and HIV specialist who left her steady job in the middle of the COVID crisis to start her own private practice. She started out with telemedicine and then launched her in-person private practice this summer. I’m not sure if there has been a more difficult time to launch a medical practice than the middle of the COVID shutdown, but there can’t have been many. She’s dedicated to helping patient both spiritually and physically, and she’s bold about speaking the name of Jesus on her website, with her staff, and to her patients. She’s got a unique background and I think her story will really inspire you.

Episode 74 - My guest today is Dr. David Geier. Dr. Geier is an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist who helps athletes and active people feel and perform their best regardless of age or injuries. In addition to helping patients in his practice, Dr. Geier has learned to help people around the country and world through TV, radio, podcast, newspaper, magazine and online media interviews. Now he helps physicians and other experts with a message to share grow their practices and businesses by serving as an expert in the media. It is death to your practice to have no media strategy or a lousy media strategy. And the truth is, this stuff just isn’t that hard. Like anything, there’s a skill set to pick up, and Dr. Geier is going to help us put that together.

It’s ok if you have no interest in getting interviewed on CNN or even on your local ABC affiliate. If you never go on a podcast, that’s just fine. But, as Dr. Geier says, your ability to show up strong in the media can be really helpful to your business and in turn will translate to opportunities to help more patients that find you just because you were on an interview. If you’re thinking of branching out into the media, I’d encourage you to start small. Start with your local newspaper or other small-time publication. It’s low-risk, low-cost or no-cost, and it’ll help you get over the apprehension of doing it for the first time. As you get more interviews and start to build some confidence, start branching out and doing more interviews. Pretty soon, you’ll be a veteran. It just takes that very first time to get started.

Episode 73 - You know, I tried to do accounting in college, and I absolutely hated it. It’s just not fun for me. Taxes are in that same category. I just despise dealing with taxes. It’s frustrating and it’s complicated, and it changes all the time. But, taxes are a certainty in life and in business, so I’ve had to figure out a way to be able to get good at it. Still, it’s a major blind spot for me. Business can be like that, with blind spots. Things that we’re just not good at. Blind spots are inevitable. Knowing that, we’ve got to figure out how to identify those blind spots and figure out ways to work through those. Otherwise, we run the risk of having weaknesses in our business that can eventually unravel everything we’ve been working for. My guest today is Courtney DeRonde. She’s a CPA and the founder of TPT Advisors. I’m excited to have Courtney here to talk about taxes and other blind spots in our business and how to overcome them. This is an important topic for any business leader.

Most of us will probably never run an organization as big as his, but the principles he talks about absolutely are bedrock foundational principles for all leaders in every industry. She is the author of a book entitled; Bringing Shadow Behavior Into the Light of Day: Understanding & Effectively Managing Bullying & Incivility in Healthcare.

You know, if you don’t know whether your team has these kinds of struggles, it’s likely that they’re happening without you knowing it. It’s critically important as a leader that you work on recognizing and addressing these issues before they become a cancer that metastasizes throughout your entire organization.

That’s why I’m so glad to have Phyllis on the podcast today. She has really got a bead on recognizing, rooting out, and dealing with the types of destructive internal team dynamics that are so prevalent in most companies. It’s an incredibly practical discussion, and we’ll go through some really specific steps you can take to start addressing some of these issues. If you’ve got a cancer in your organization, you need to excise it. In this conversation, you’ll get the tools you need to do that.

Episode 66 - My guest on the podcast today is Joanne Stadnik. She’s the CEO of one of the largest healthcare organizations in Minnesota. In her 35 years of healthcare administration, she has built incredibly productive, cooperative teams to grow incredibly large businesses. Today, she’s going to talk about the science of fascination.

I first heard about this on a podcast in 2014, and I was enthralled. The research behind this is compelling, and I’ve used it in multiple hospitals to help my team members engage better with each other and create more dynamic, cooperative, and productive workplace cultures. This stuff is really interesting, and Joanne is a certified expert in this.

She’ll also tell us about a tool called the Fascination Advantage, which is such a great tool that I have bought it for my entire team in multiple businesses that I’ve worked in. This is a really practical discussion that you can take action on and have a major impact on your workplace culture and subsequently your business.

Take the Fascination Advantage assessment!

There are a lot of great personality tests out there, but this one is my favorite. I've never taken a test that so perfectly encapsulated my personality and explained how I communicate best with others. I liked it so much, I bought one for everyone on my whole team! You'll love learning how the world sees you and how you can leverage that to communicate more effectively.

Episode 65 - I’m going to mix it up a little bit today. I recently hosted a webinar where I gave a presentation called "Smart Strategies for Building a Successful Clinical Practice." (Click here to view the webinar) We had hundreds of attendees, and it was still just a fraction of this podcast audience. I got so much great feedback about the value of the content that I thought I would just share it here with you! The webinar host was Omar Khateeb of Gentem Health. You may remember his great talk on branding in episode 57, which you should definitely go listen to.

I’m interested in trying some new things with the podcast to give you even more value with every episode. I’d love to hear feedback from you about this podcast style. If this is something that really works for you, let me know, and I’ll do more. If not, well, we’ll file this under “been there, done that.” You can email me at podcast@thescopeofpractice.com and let me know what you thought.

In this episode, we explore strategies for building a successful clinical practice using a framework I call the "Honeycomb of Success." These six areas of your clinical practice will help you grow, refine, and scale your practice if you tend to them well. Enjoy!

Episode 64 - My guest on the podcast today is Dr. Marla Ranieri. She’s a physical therapist and former competitive gymnast who started a telemedicine company a few years ago, and it just expoded during the pandemic. While the rest of us were scrambling to figure out how to do telemedicine and integrate it into our practice, she was already working on perfecting the system to make it safe, efficient, and a comfortable experience for providers and patients.

Telemedicine probably won’t be 100% of your clinical practice, but I really think telemedicine is here to stay. You need to know how to incorporate it into your practice. There are real advantages to you, but the truth is that consumer demands are going to increase the use of telemedicine in the years to come. It’s an evolving technology, and I’m glad we have an expert here to tell us about it.

Special offer from Gentem.com, just for my podcast listeners! Gentem is giving away a free benchmark assessment of your revenue cycle for anyone listening to this podcast. That’s a minimum $5,000 value, and it could be worth 20 times that in reclaimed revenue!

Episode 62 - My guest on the podcast today is Stacy Sherman. Stacy is an expert in the "customer experience." One of the first things we actually talk about in the conversation is the difference between customer service and the customer experience. The customer experience is a more all-encompassing idea that includes every touchpoint for the patient or customer from hearing about your practice or your business until they receive the service you provide, pay for it, and beyond.

As business owners and business leaders, we have to be aware that in a free market system, people have choices, and they will exercise those choices by going wherever they want to get the goods or services you desire. You can beat your competition simply by offering a better experience, and as Stacy will tell you, it’s not nearly as complicated or difficult as it might sound.

Episode 61 - My guest on the podcast today is Dr. Sogol Pahlavan. She’s a private practice pediatrician in Houston, TX. She has been in private practice for over a decade, growing the business steadily from 2 physicians to 8 physicians, dozens of staff, and over 10,000 patients. And, she did this all by bootstrapping it. She had no formal training in business, no MBA, but she did it anyway. As she’ll tell you, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. There were some serious challenges along the way. She’s going to tell us all about it in this week’s episode. This is the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Private Practice, and it doesn’t get more real than this.

So, I just have to ask. If Dr. Pahlavan can build a thriving private practice in a big city dominated by a giant healthcare organization, and do it all with no formal training, why can’t you do it? I’m telling you, it is still possible to start and grow a private practice today. I hear stories about it from physicians all the time. There are hundreds of physicians starting, growing, or rehabilitating their practices all the time. As Dr. Pahlavan says, it is not only possible, it’s IMPERATIVE that we all as physicians take control of our businesses and our clinical practices to make them the best they can be. If we don’t, we're in danger of losing the opportunity to a big corporation that’ll come along and take over and leave us out of the loop.

Episode 60 - My guest on the podcast today is Lance Black. He’s the outgoing Associate Director for Innovation of the Texas Medical Center, now Senior Medical Director for 3ive Labs. This conversation really took me by surprise. He’s a world-class expert on medical innovation, but what I found surprising was how many facets of medical innovation are open to the average physician, whether that’s through developing a medical device, coming up with a non-medical innovation that helps your administrative costs and clinical efficiency, or investing in medical innovation startups.

No kidding, I really think you’re going to enjoy this. I learned a ton, and the conversation really helped me see through some different aspects of medical innovation that I’m actually excited to get into. I hope this conversation inspires you to go out and set the world on fire (metaphorically speaking). What idea do you have that is just waiting to be unleashed?

Episode 59 - My guest on the podcast today is April Rhoads. April is a clinical efficiency expert and now the founder of a new non-profit organization called Stop the Burnout. I’m excited for her to come on the show to talk about how to maximize clinical efficiency.

It’s funny, I thought this episode was going to be be like in the movie Office Space when the two consultants come in and everyone's basically interviewing for their jobs, but we went in several different directions than I thought. My hands were cramping from all the notes I was writing on the great stuff we talked about. This was a truly fantastic conversation. You’ll probably want to bookmark this episode and come back to it later. I guarantee that you'll find things to make your business run better and more efficiently if you listen to this episode.

Episode 58 - My guest on the podcast today is Ryan Inman. Long-time listeners may remember him from episode 25 where we talked about how to have healthy money conversations with your spouse that don’t end in a fight. He’s a fee-only financial planner who works exclusively with physicians. His wife is a physician in the U.S. Navy, and he really understands the unique financial challenges that physicians face. You may know him from his incredibly well-read blog and popular podcast, both called Financial Residency.

On this episode, we talk all things mortgages. How much house can you afford, what’s the right time to buy a house, and what in the world is a physician mortgage loan? We’ll talk about all that and more. If you’re ever planning to buy or sell a house, this is a conversation for you.

Sunday Special 12 - My guest on The Sunday Special today is Dr. Mario Mendoza.  Dr. Mendoza is an anesthesiologist with a unique personal journey, literally.  He and his mother fled political persecution and threat of death from Central America and trekked hundreds of miles to the U.S. Border when he was a child.  They entered, as Dr. Mendoza likes to say, as undocumented immigrants.

He grew up in New York, excelled in school, contributed to his community, and eventually earned his green card.  Against all odds, he went to medical school and now is a successful U.S. physician.  That’s amazing, but the thing that’s more amazing is how he came to faith as a follower of Jesus and the passion with which he now pursues that calling.  He has an absolutely incredible testimony, and I’m just so excited to get to share this with you.

He has literally written the book on how to build the perfect clinical office to serve your patient’s needs. He has built over 2000 offices for dentists doctors, fertility centers, ambulatory surgical centers, and more. I was tremendously impressed with his approach to building medical spaces.

If you’re thinking about building or renovating your office, clinic space, or surgery center, you need to bookmark this episode so you can keep coming back to it as needed. I learned a ton from this conversation, and I really think it’s going to help you as well. If you’re in medical school or residency, pay attention to Steve’s tips. Episode 53 - My guest on the podcast today is Dr. Nii Darko. Dr. Nii is a trauma surgeon and the host of the very popular podcast Docs Outside the Box. He and his wife have an incredible story about their journey to financial freedom. As the children of immigrants, the Darko family had some real struggles, but they made deliberate choices to rise above their circumstances.

I think what was most revealing about their story was how their character shaped their choices. If you want financial independence, and if you want to no longer have to make decisions based on how it will affect your ability to pay off your student loans, you need to listen to this inspiring conversation.

As Dr. Nii will tell you, it’s not about what you’re willing to do. It’s about what you’re willing to give up that will lead to your success or failure. I think this conversation will motivate you to make some tough decisions so you can achieve the financial success that you want and deserve.

Sunday Special 11 - My guest on The Sunday Special today is Dr. Elena Shea.  She's a full-time pediatrician and a full-time physician mom.  A lot of you know exactly what that’s like.  I’m a full-time physician and a full-time dad, so I totally understand what it's like to be a working parent.  It’s hard, right?

You’re constantly getting pulled in a lot of different directs and it’s normal to feel guilty about how much time you're spending either at work or at home.  It’s easy to get trapped into feeling like you’re failing in one area or the other.  Dr. Shea knows all about that, and she’s going to have a very candid conversation with us about being a working mom, and what it looks like to strive for excellence in all areas of life.  This conversation is raw, it’s real, and it’s really going to encourage you.

You’re probably familiar with the book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Dr. Stephen Covey. He co-founded Franklin Covey to be one of the premiere leadership companies in the world. When I say that they are first class, it’s really not an exaggeration, and Scott Miller has been leading their thought leadership team for years now. His book, Management Mess to Leadership Success was a #1 new release on Amazon and has been transforming business cultures around the world.

He and his team only select a few podcasts a month to be on and I was ecstatic when he asked to be a guest on The Scope of Practice. He’s fun, witty, and highly knowledgeable about leadership topics. I expect this is going to end up being a top 10 episode this year. Trust me, you’re going to love it! Bookmark this episode because you’ll want to listen to it again. This would be beneficial to your entire leadership team too.

Episode 51 - My guest on the podcast today is Dr. Jeff Segal. Dr. Segal is a board-certified neurosurgeon who is also a practicing lawyer! He launched a company called Medical Justice in 2002. Medical Justice is a physician-based organization focused on keeping doctors from being sued for frivolous reasons. Dr. Segal also founded eMerit to help doctors protect and preserve their reputations – particularly online.

Dr. Segal has established himself as one of the country’s leading authorities on medical malpractice and online reputation. He also hosts the Medical Liability Minute Podcast where he shares wisdom to help coach physicians to avoid some legal land mines. I’m pumped that he’s here on the podcast today to share some of that wisdom with us. You’re going to learn a lot. I definitely learned some things I didn’t know. This is stuff that all physicians need to know, unfortunately. There’s just no getting away from legal entanglements in your career. But, thanks to people like Dr. Segal, we should be well equipped to handle them.

Episode 50 - My guest today is Matt Seefeld. He’s the Executive Vice President of MedEvolve. Matt helps physician groups stay independent and profitable. He is an expert in design and implementation of AI-driven workflow solutions and business analytics that drive transparency, accountability and automation for healthcare organizations.

He works with physician groups around the country to optimize the way they manage their revenue cycles and medical billing teams so they can reduce their cost to collect money, and to increase efficiency. The quality of a practice’s accounts receivable management directly impacts the organization’s net revenue and the ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet.

Matt’s going to walk us through some key questions that we need to be able to answer in order to ensure we have a thriving business. I guarantee that you’ll hear at least a few questions you won’t be able to answer. As Matt will tell us, an inability to answer these questions could be costing us hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars per year. He’s going to help us maximize our revenue cycle, stop losing money we’ve rightfully earned, and have an efficient and profitable business so we can keep taking great care of our patients.

Sunday Special 10 - I’m really pumped about today’s episode.  I feel like it’s wrong to have favorite podcast episodes, like you shouldn’t have favorite kids.  But, I’ll just say that this is one of the most inspiring conversations I’ve had on the sunday special yet.  Dr. K Kay Moody is an emergency medicine physician who’s had to overcome a lot of serious challenges.

She’s battled hospital administrators who were making it harder to care for her patients.  She has battled leaders who wanted her to stay quiet instead of speaking out against bad practices.  And she’s dealt with people not taking her seriously because she’s a woman.

Well, let me tell you, this conversation inspired me.  I want this discussion to give you courage.  If she can take a stand, then we all can.  God didn’t give us a spirit of timidity, but rather a spirit of power and love.  Dr. Moody has that in spades, and I think you’re really going to be inspired by her interview.

Episode 48 - A lot of physicians I’ve talked to have had some bad experiences with private equity. Maybe they got a big payout but they lost so much autonomy and had their workload increased so much that they ended up retiring or leaving the practice because they just couldn’t stand the working conditions. But, I’ve talked with other docs that said the private equity deal they did was fantastic. They got a big payout, they’ve grown their business faster than they thought possible, and the equity company is a great partner that just wants them to be able to practice great medicine on the doctors’ terms. I'm grateful to have Mark Rieboldt of The Coker Group on the podcast today to talk about private equity deals.

Not every private equity deal is bad. If you do your due diligence, a private equity deal could end up being a great opportunity for your business. I would encourage you to not reject every PE deal out of hand, but take each opportunity on a case by case basis. Listen to the podcast episode today to learn all about private equity and decide if it's a good move for your business.

Episode 47 (bonus) - If COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on your life, you probably find parts of your life feeling off-balance. Most physicians I talk to have felt that way for months! Dr. Dawn Baker has written extensively about how to find and maintain work/life balance, and she joins us on The Scope of Practice Podcast today to share her insights.

What if you could feel like you are totally balanced between all the parts of your life? What would it take? What would you give for that? Dr. Baker has some answers for you, and best of all, it's totally free. In fact, it's better than that because it all comes directly from you! Your ability to achieve balance is not out of reach.

Dr. Baker drops some incredible wisdom regarding achieving financial independence, the importance of good mentors, the value of self-knowledge, and (my favorite) how to avoid the "Hedonic Treadmill of Achievement." This conversation will encourage and inspire you!

Episode 47 - Today’s guest is Dr. Sandy Weitz. Dr. Weitz is a pain management specialist who started her own private practice and grew it to 11 providers. She built a 25,000 square foot medical office building to house her clinic and multi-specialty ambulatory surgery center. Dr. Weitz also owned an anesthesia company, imaging center as well as several other vertically integrated medical businesses. She ultimately sold several of her businesses to various partners and retired at 53.

That all sounds amazing, and it is, but it wasn’t without its challenges, as you’ll hear her discuss. Since retiring, Dr. Weitz is teaching other physicians the business of medicine. She is showing them how to maximize their earnings potential by leveraging their core medical practice to segue into other business initiatives. This is going be an episode worth bookmarking to return to over and over. I’m telling you, you won’t want to miss out on this discussion.

Episode 46 - In my last conversation with Dr. Hala Sabry, we talked about balancing career and family aspirations. When you’re driven to succeed in all areas of your life, it’s hard to balance those different ambitions. If you didn't get a chance to listen, make sure to go check that out. In today's episode, we're wrapping up the four part series with Dr. Sabry by talking about the future for women in medicine.

The first women to earn a medical degree in the U.S. was Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell in 1849. Today, women make up half of all medical school classes. We’ve made tremendous progress in advancing opportunities for both women and men to excel in the medical field. So, what’s on the horizon? What does the future look like for women in medicine?

Dr. Sabry and lots of amazing women (and men) are working hard to ensure that anyone in the medical field has every opportunity they want. I think the future is incredibly bright, and I’m excited to bring you this final interview in my four part series with Dr. Hala Sabry.

Episode 45 - We’ve talked a lot this month about business and leadership, and today I want to delve into how we balance that drive and ambition with family pursuits. We all want to be devoted spouses and parents, but our careers demand a lot of time and energy. So, how do we strike a balance between those two? Dr. Hala Sabry has extensive experience in that as a physician mom of 5 kids and a serial entrepreneur. I think you’ll really relate to her struggles and hopefully you’ll get some ideas for how to maintain that sense of balance in your own life. Enjoy part 3 of my four part series with her.

Sunday Special 08 - Dr. Brent Lacey started The Scope of Practice Podcast to teach busy healthcare professionals how to manage their businesses more successfully and master their personal finances.  He saw the lack of knowledge of how to run a business and the huge burden of student loan debt that physicians have and realized there was a tremendous need for that kind of teaching.

Today on The Scope of Practice Podcast, he shares his personal spiritual journey and how God called him first to a career in medicine and later to military service.  He believes that God still speaks to those who earnestly seek Him. This is his first time to directly address the podcast audience.  He hopes that this will be an inspiring message which will give people comfort and clarity for their own career journey.

Episode 36 - Do you ever feel like your career isn't quite what you thought it would be? Like you're living someone else's dream or trying to fit into a mode that doesn't quite work for you? My guest today is Dr. Francis Yoo, and he suggests that most physicians are failing to live what he calls their "authentic self."

When we're in medical school and post-graduate training, we work hard to become excellent at the craft of medicine, but are we abandoning our own dreams in favor of a prescribed concept of what "a doctor is supposed to be"? Dr. Yoo certainly thinks so.

If you want your career to be what you've always dreamed, it's time to look inward and figure out what your "authentic self" really looks like! Listen to this episode and discover the freedom that comes for working towards your own goals, just because it's who you know you're meant to be.

Episode 35 - It's common for us to talk to our patients and yet not be able to communicate effectively. If we can't talk to someone in a way that helps them actually understand what we're trying to say, we're not effectively communicating with them. Dr. Brad Block has some great insights into how to effectively communicate with our patients.

  • How do you know when it's ok to tell a joke?
  • What kind of non-verbal cues are you using to make your point?
  • Is eye contact important?
  • Maybe interrupting the patient isn't always a bad thing?

As physicians, it's incumbent on us to explain things to patients in ways that they understand. That involves understanding how their culture, background, socioeconomic status, marital status, sexual orientation, and ethnicity inform their worldview. It's not as simple as just telling people what they need to know. In this podcast episode, you'll learn some key tips to help you communicate with your patients more effectively so you can be in a better position to help them with their health care needs. If you want to really help your patients heal, your communication matters, and this episode will help you level up your communication game.

Episode 34 - Did you know that up to 50% of female physicians report having PTSD from their jobs! We all know that burnout is common, but PTSD is upwards of half of all female physicians? That’s unacceptable. That’s insane. It’s no wonder that half of all physicians surveyed in 2018 reported plans to go part time or retire early in the next few years. Our guest this week is Cecille Ahrens. She’s a mental health professional and host of the Get Mental Podcast.

Cecille has over 20 years of applied experience. She specializes in PTSD & Trauma, Anxiety Disorders, Mood Disorders, Relationship Issues, Domestic Violence and Women’s Issues. In her practice, she sees a lot of high-octane professionals who experience burnout, depression, anxiety, and even PTSD through their interactions at their job.

Cecille is passionate about de-stigmatizing mental health and raising mental health awareness. This conversation is a really important one for anyone who is experiencing or has experienced symptoms of burnout at work. Up to 70% of physicians surveyed report experiencing symptoms of burnout, so I guarantee that this is relevant to you or to someone who is close to you. This is an important episode.

Sunday Special 07 - Sometimes our greatest accomplishments come without accolades or fanfare.  Sometimes it’s as simple as getting back up after being knocked down.  Other times, it’s doing what you said you would, just because integrity means something.  Our guest today is Dr. Holden Graves, and he faced some real challenges when he and his wife were trying to pay off all of their student loans.

They had a few false starts, but they got it done and now they are living a great life, debt-free and fully able to make the choices they want to make.  It meant making a few sacrifices, but as he’ll tell you, it was totally worth it.  For all of you out there who are deeply in debt and wondering when you’ll be able to get all of your loans paid off, I think this conversation is really going to encourage you.

Episode 33 - My guest this week is Dr. Charlotte Akor. She is a pediatric ophthalmologist but she has carved out a cool niche for herself: teaching billing and coding to doctors. A few years ago, after I had been in military medicine for about 7 or 8 years, I realized I had utterly no idea how to bill and code properly. Frankly, since my salary never really depended on it, I never bothered to learn it. I certainly didn’t have any training during residency or fellowship on how to do it properly, and I bet you didn’t either. Hardly any training programs teach that.

A few years before I went into private practice, I decided to get good at billing and coding. I was flabbergasted at how poorly I had been doing coding and billing previously. I was undercoding a lot of encounters, by as much as 30-40% of their value in some cases. It was ludicrous! Can you imagine if I had realized that only years after starting my own practice and realized how much money I had lost by just not knowing how to code?

If you’re starting to sweat a little right now wondering what you’re not coding for and how much money you’re losing, then this episode is definitely for you. Dr. Charlotte is going to give us some great tips about how to avoid common mistakes people make when it comes to billing, coding, and collections. She’s awesome and really knows her stuff. Trust me, you’re going to hear at least one thing in today’s episode that you didn’t know you didn’t know.

Great resources for you!!

Episode 32 - Have you ever watched a physician get interviewed on TV and thought, "I could definitely do this better than them and that should be me on TV?" How do you think Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz got to be famous? Do you think it's because they know more than everyone else or is it because they prioritized personal branding and hired the right PR firm? Our guest this week, Kris Ruby, shares the publicity secrets behind TV doctors and how you can use media to build your practice.

Kris is the CEO of Ruby Media Group and Medical Practice PR, an award-winning medical public relations agency that helps doctors leverage the power of digital PR to increase media exposure for their practice. In this episode on medical public relations, she unpacks the "why" and the "how" of getting media appearances. PR and media appearances can be a huge boost to your business and medical practice.

Dr. Oz and Dr. Phil may not be TV doctors who know more than you do, but they probably had some of the best publicists, which is why they are in the position they are in, and you may not be.

Getting noticed is critical to success in the medical industry these days. If you aren't taking advantage of media appearances for your medical practice, you can bet that your competitors are! Join us in the conversation this week with Kris Ruby to learn about medical public relations and what it can do for your business!

Episode 27 - Have you ever had the feeling that you "just don't belong here"? I think we all get caught with Imposter Syndrome at one time in our lives. For women, this is especially common, especially in medicine. Dr. Barbara Hamilton knows what it's like to be a woman in a male-dominated specialty. Blogging as the Tired Superheroine, she has been instrumental in empowering young generations of physicians to break barriers and plow right through obstacles so they can achieve the career success they deserve.

As a man in a male-dominated field, I have observed a lot of the same things that Dr. Hamilton discusses on the podcast episode. She has amazing insights into what prevents people from seeking their dreams. I love her message that anyone should be able to achieve anything they want in medicine. As physicians, it's up to us to empower other physicians to live their chosen calling.

Dr. Barbara Hamilton is an expert and motivating young physicians to overcome their struggles and reach for the stars. She knows what it takes to go from sidekick to super heroine, and she's here to tell us how it can still be done! Don't think that this episode isn't for you! Episode 24 - What does it really take to run a business? What does it take to be a leader? How do you do all of your work and help grow a thriving practice? These are important questions for any physician. This week, we get a chance to have some of these questions answered by Dr. John Michels, a physician entrepreneur with a very unusual path to medicine.

Dr. John Michels won the Super Bowl as an offensive tackle for the Green Bay Packers. He unfortunately suffered a career-ending knee injury in the next year. Undeterred, he pivoted his career plans and became a physician! Now, he is an interventional pain specialist who brings the same championship attitude to the procedure suite that he used to bring to the football field.

If you've felt inadequate to be able to serve your patients or lead your team, you're not alone! Dr. John Michels had to start an entire career over from scratch! From Super Bowl Champion to medical student, his attitude remains the same: serve your team, serve your patients, serve your family. Episode 23 - If you think your business isn't creating enough profit, you're probably right. But, it's not for the reason you think! The reason you're not taking home enough profit is because you're not taking out profit first! In this week's episode, Mike Michalowicz argues that the traditional model of business (Revenue - Expenses = Profits) is wrong.

Instead, you should use this model: Revenue - Profit = Expenses. Take profit out of the business first, then use the remaining money to pay taxes and expenses. This conversation is revolutionary, but it's the best way I've heard to ensure that you have a profitable business. If you're bringing home profit and not meeting expenses, the answer is to spend less money!

Listen to this week's episode with Mike Michalowicz and learn how to create a wildly successful and profitable business just by taking out profit first!

Episode 07 - Your competitors are getting more leads, more sales, more subscribers and more raving fans than you. Why is that? It's probably because your marketing isn't as clear as it should be.

I've learned that it's critically important to be clear when you're delivering your message. You also need a clear path for people to follow in order to learn what you offer, then accept the offer and take action on it.

The best brands and the best sites aren't necessarily the ones that win. The brands that succeed the most are typically the ones that have the clearest messages. You need to make your messaging VERY easy for people to understand.

At Storybrand, Donald Miller and Dr. J.J. Peterson teach business owners how to clarify their messages so they can build their business. In this episode, Dr. Peterson breaks down the elements of marketing that you need in order to make your messaging clear so you can grow your business.

Episode 06 - Financial security is an illusion, if your only income is from your main job. Creating passive income, like through real estate investing, is all about gaining autonomy over our lives.

The tax code is massively skewed towards favoring real estate investing. Other forms of income and investing tend to be taxed at higher rates. So, real estate is especially important for high income earners like physicians to consider.

But, what if you don't have a lot of money? Or any experience? Fortunately, there are still great ways that you start your real estate investing portfolio.
