Coach Chelsea speaks wih Coach Simmons as she takes the helm at the University of Memphis. We speak about her plans, her faith in God, Servant Leadership, and apply those principles to her assignment as Head Coach.

Two-time NCAA National Champion and Tennessee native Alex Simmons was named the head coach of the Memphis Tiger women’s basketball team on April 6, 2023 and became the 13th head coach in the program’s history.

Simmons comes to Memphis after five seasons at the helm of Gardner-Webb where she led the team to a 90-59 record including a 29-5 mark this past season. The Runnin’ Bulldogs broke multiple program, school and Big South records with their 29 victories and a 21-game win streak that included a perfect 18-0 record in conference play. GWU captured the regular season and championship titles for the program’s first trip to the Big Dance since the 2010-11 season.

Simmons, who was named as the Big South Coach of the Year, saw four of her five starters earn All-Big South honors in 2022-23, while Jhesskya Williams became just the third player in Gardner-Webb history to surpass 2,000 career points, finishing as the program’s second all-time leading scorer with 2,049 points.

Simmons’ basketball roots run deep to one of the most respected programs in the game. She played collegiately at the University of Tennessee under basketball Hall of Fame coach Pat Summitt from 2004-2009, helping the Lady Vols win back-to-back NCAA National Championships in 2007 and 2008.

Simmons was a member of three Final Four squads (2005, 2007, 2008) and another Elite Eight team (2006) while serving as a team captain and was also the Lady Vols representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

During the 2021-22 season, Simmons steered the Dogs to an overall record of 11-13 and 10-7 in the Big South. Under Simmons, Alasia Smith was named the Big South Freshman of the Year after the five-time Freshman of the Week averaged 11.3 PPG, 8.3 RPG and led the conference with 4.0 offensive rebounds per game.

Simmons led the Runnin’ Bulldogs to an 18-11 overall record and 13-7 in Big South Conference play in 2019-20, finishing fifth in the league standings. GWU ended the season on a hot streak, winning four-straight games and seven of their last eight matchups before play was halted prior to the Big South tournament.

Under Simmons, Carley Plentovich earned a handful of accolades during the 2019-20 season, including All-Big South honors, as well as a Big South Player of the Week award. She also became the program’s 24th 1,000-point scorer, the first under Simmons, and was named to the Big South’s All-Academic team.

In her first season in Boiling Springs, Simmons led Gardner-Webb to a 16-15 record and 10-8 Big South mark in 2018-19 with a fifth-place finish. Two players - Plentovich and Williams – would earn All-Big South honors.

Simmons took over the Runnin’ Bulldogs in April 2018 after assistant coaching stints at Ole Miss (2013-2018) and Middle Tennessee State (2010-2013). She also served as a graduate assistant coach at Kansas (2009-2010).

Prior to her time at Ole Miss, Simmons served as an assistant coach at Middle Tennessee State, helping the Blue Raiders to three NCAA Tournament appearances during her time on the bench. Her work with the team’s post players produced an honorable-mention All-America selection and in the 2011-2012 season saw the Blue Raiders grab the most rebounds since 1983.

Also a Street & Smith’s All-America Honorable Mention selection in 2001 and 2002, Simmons helped the Golden Eaglettes to Tennessee State Championships in 2001, 2003 and 2004. She was a three-time All-State selection, four-time All-District choice and was named as the Mid-State Player of the Year in 2003.

She graduated from the University of Tennessee in 2008 with a degree in exercise science. Simmons and her husband, Christian, have two daughters – Carsyn and Channing.

Charles Utter became a victim of corrupted authority when his own girlfriend was victimized by their ‘devout’ leader.

In his chilling story about a small-town Catholic priest who was a con artist, fraudulent investor, and serial sex abuser, Charles courageously holds nothing back. She was one of possibly hundreds that were damaged by this religiously disguised master manipulator who used his power and position to engage in fraudulent business activities with the father of a US president while blackmailing his bishop to gain protection. He managed to acquire 12 hotels while he pretended to be living on his modest clerical salary. There he took advantage of women many of whom were vulnerable followers.

In his jaw-dropping book Roman Collar Crime - The Transgressions of a Small-Town Priest, Charles exposes the dirty secrets of the product of the most powerful institution on the planet and the reason we need to radically change its leadership landscape.

Charles is on a mission to influence a healthy redistribution of power that encourages a more transparent and collaborative faith environment.

Charles A. Utter holds a bachelor’s degree in history from St. John’s University. He spent seven years teaching and coaching at the high school level before beginning a career in finance that would span nearly four decades.

Brenita Jackson enters her second year (2022-23) as head coach of the women’s basketball program and 7th season overall as a head coach at the college level coaching alongside her husband Kevin Jackson. In just her first season at the helm of the Lady Ram's program, Jackson holds the third best record in program history 25-7 and holds the highest win percentage .781 of any coach in the history of women's basketball at Texas Wesleyan. The Lady Rams qualified for the national tournament for only the third time in program history ending their historic season in Sioux Falls, Iowa to St. Francis University.
Jackson was named the 2021-2022 John Hudson Coach of the Year after reviving the program that only won 1 game that she inherited to a 25-win season. This 24 win improvement in just one year is the best turnaround in the program's history. The team was lead by junior transfer Kertisa Amos who was named First Team all Sooner Athletic Conference, New Comer of the Year and on the All-Defensive Team. The team was also propelled by the play of Freshman of the Year, Zarria Carter, and All Conference Honorable Mention, Makayla Coy. Both Carter and Amos were awarded Player of the Week Awards in the Sooner Athletic Conference during the historic season.
Turning around losing programs is something Kevin and Brenita Jackson have done at three different college programs in their coaching careers and have worked tirelessly to maintain an overall graduation rate of 100% of all student-athletes. The husband and wife team believe in building the whole person and developing the student and the athlete for success in the classroom, on the court and in life.

Prior to coming to Texas Wesleyan, Brenita spent a season at Little Elm High School where she served as an assistant coach for a year. She has also spent the last 8 years building KBJ Academy with her husband Kevin Jackson to offer consulting, basketball skills training, camps and team building retreats across the country.
Jackson is from the Dallas-Fort Worth area and graduated from Cedar Hill High School in 2003. She went on to play two years at Lon Morris College where she led the team from last place, to a Region 14 Conference Champion Runner-Up finish in 2005. She was voted to the All-Conference and All-Academic team and signed to play at NCAA Division I Southeastern Louisiana University in the Southland Conference. While at Southeastern, she led the Lions from last place in the conference to an East Division Conference Championship in 2007 while also garnering All-Conference, All-Academic and All-Louisiana honors. While at Southeastern, she met her now husband - Kevin Jackson who would later join her on the coaching journey making history together at various stops. After graduating from Southeastern with her Bachelor’s in Business Management, Brenita went on to play professionally in Aarhus, Denmark where she began coaching her team to an undefeated season.
Brenita returned to her alma mater in the fall of 2008 to become an assistant coach at Lon Morris College. In 2010, she was promoted to the head coaching position and made history with Kevin Jackson in their first two years. The pair broke the school record for the most wins in a season finishing 19-12, while also finishing runner-up in the Region 14 Championship. Brenita and Kevin recruited and coached two All-Americans, six All-Conference winners, four All-Academic winners and one Freshman of the Year. They also obtained a 100% graduation rate of all sophomores and the team GPA was ranked No. 5 in the nation, with an average GPA of 3.5.

Mike Pittman is in his second season at Northwestern State after making his way to the Lady Demons from Alcorn State.

Pittman served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Lady Braves. He served in the same role the season prior at Paul Quinn College in Dallas after two years as the head coach at Kimball High School, also in the Dallas area.

"I am excited to have coach Pittman join the Demon family," Nimz said. "He brings a lot of experience to the court both at the college and high school levels.

"He was part of turning around a college program and was a big help in signing very talented young student-athletes. I believe his dynamic personality will be a big asset in recruiting and fundraising. On top of that, he is from Louisiana and has established relationships with the coaches in the area."

With Alcorn, Pittman helped the Lady Braves lead the nation in three defensive categories -- steals per game, forced turnovers per game and total steals, a trio of categories in which the Lady Demons have excelled over the years.

Alcorn also saw marked offensive improvement following Pittman’s arrival, boosting its scoring margin by more than 10 points per game while committing an average of nine fewer turnovers per contest than the previous season. The improved offensive production led to a six-point jump in free throw percentage and a drop in opponent field goal percentage.

Before moving to Alcorn, Pittman saw similar improvements in his season at Paul Quinn College, ranking in the top 20 nationally in points per game, field goal percentage, rebounds per game and steals per game during the 2018-19 season. A team that advanced to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association semi-finals.

Pittman served as the offensive coordinator of a team that saw an 11 percent increase in scoring. The jump to 76.0 point per game ranked 13th in the NAIA at the end of the season coinciding with a 42.5 percent effort from the field, a 3.6 percent increase under the direction of Pittman. Not just an offensive mind, Pittman oversaw a defensive unit that averaged 13.0 steals and 43.0 rebounds per game, ranking 8th and 14th nationally respectively.

A New Orleans native, Pittman began his coaching career in the Louisiana prep scene getting his start at North DeSoto High School before his first head coaching job at Grambling Lab a year later.

After a handful of years at Minden High School, Pittman made the move to Texas spending 12 years at Ryan High School in Denton before taking the position at Kimball.

Along the way Pittman has been closely tied to the collegiate game serving as a camp instructor at Louisiana Tech, North Texas and the University of Texas from 2000 through 2011.

Pittman's investment in his players, others, and the game of basketball extends off the court spearheading multiple community service activities during his career.

He co-founded an after-school tutorial program at Ryan HS, provided skills training for low-income kids through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and oversaw over 200 youth statewide in partnership with religious organizations in sports initiatives among many other activities.

Coach Chelsea speaks with Jeri Porter on her faith and love for God and Servant Leadership.

Porter was named to the position on May 11, 2015, and made an immediate impact. Inheriting a squad that lost 20 games the year before and was picked to finish next to last according to the pre-season Peach Belt Conference coaches' poll, she directed the Patriots to a 24-9 record, a No.23 national rankings, and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. That squad produced one All-Conference performer and one PBC All-Academic Team selection.

During her second year, FMU went 18-12 and placed second in the Peach Belt Conference's East Division. The Patriots advanced to the PBC Tournament semifinals, one player earned All-Conference honors, and one garnered Academic All-Conference recognition. In 2017-18, the Patriots posted a 16-12 mark and saw two players earn All-Conference honors and one pick up All-Region and All-America accolades. In 2018-19, FMU went 12-15 with one player gaining All-Conference and All-Region honors, and during the 2019-20 season the Patriots were 14-13 and featured a pair of All-PBC performers.

Altogether, Porter has 21 years experience as a collegiate head coach – 11 at the NCAA Division I level and 10 at the Division II level – and has recorded a 294-300 career mark.

She came to Florence after spending the 2014-15 season at Georgia State University as an assistant on the Panthers’ staff.

Porter’s first head coaching position was at Division II University of North Alabama, where she posted three winning marks in four seasons, including a 21-7 record in 1999-2000. That squad captured the Gulf South Conference East Division title, while Porter garnered conference Coach of the Year recognition.

She was named the head coach at Radford in 2002 and led the Highlanders to 93 wins in six seasons, including a pair of 20-win campaigns and two second-place finishes in the Big South Conference. Her 2007-08 squad was 23-12 and earned a WNIT invitation.

In 2008, she accepted the head coaching position at George Mason University, where she remained until 2013. Porter increased the Patriots’ win total over her first four seasons (from four to 15 wins). During her time in Fairfax, she also created and directed the Jeri Porter Girls’ Basketball Camps. Her final two squads posted a cumulative team grade point average of 3.09.

Porter is a 1991 graduate of Liberty University, where she earned a B.S. degree in psychology. She garnered first-team All-Big South Conference honors as a senior and was twice named her squad’s most valuable player. She was inducted into the university’s Lady Flames Hall of Fame in 1998.

She began her coaching career at her alma mater serving as an assistant coach for six seasons, during which time the Lady Flames won two conference tournament championships and advanced to the 1997 and 1998 NCAA Tournaments.

She married Michael Porter of Manassas, Va., in 1997 and the couple has a son (EJ, age 20) and a daughter (Jada, 11). Her son plays basketball at Messiah College in Mechanicsburg, Pa.

Porter is the 13th head coach in the storied history of the Francis Marion program.

The Francis Marion program has an all-time record of 897-499 in 48 seasons and ranks 12th among all NCAA Division II institutions in total wins. The Patriots have captured two national championships, the 1982 AIAW Division II title and the 1986 NAIA title, and also advanced to the 1998 NCAA Division II Final Four. The program made five straight NCAA Division II Tournament appearances between 1997 and 2001, and four consecutive appearances between 2008 and 2011.

In a world filled with pride, arrogance, and self-centeredness, author Britt Gusmus had many hard lessons to learn. Lessons that continue every day. When a mirror was placed in front of him that reflected love, purity, honesty, strength, and compassion, he had two choices:

  1. He could turn and run.
  2. He could walk toward that light every day, one step at a time.

He chose to walk toward the light. And he began by asking questions.

*Had my upbringing led me astray?

What if I changed my movement patterns based on the essentials to survive?

What if my movement patterns were endless?

What if the source of my strength is rooted in eternal inspiration that satisfies my instincts and human desire?*

Coach Chelsea speaks with Britt Gusmus about Faith, Sports, and Servant Leadership.

Coach Chelsea speaks with Rachel Baribeau about how she exudes the attributes of a Proverbs 31 Woman in her initiative #ImChangingTheNarrative

Rachel developed #ImChangingtheNarrative with student-athletes in mind and a belief that one crooked course made straight is everything. One misstep not taken means one less victim in the world. And one less life thrown away because of a split-second bad decision.

At Rachel’s first visit sometimes they’re skeptical when the petite Latina woman is introduced, but in just 60 minutes she wins them over. She now speaks to athletes, law enforcement, churches, and corporations about taking back the headlines for good – showing them that they have the power to change the narrative and to find their purpose in life outside of their sport and everyday lives.

To live lives of…

Purpose, Passion and Platform. Just like her inspiration, Alabama and NFL star Kevin Turner did before he succumbed to ALS and CTE.

When she’s finished, they wait in line to speak to her. They tweet, private message, and text her. They trust her and report back on their efforts to become the kings and queens she consistently challenges them. While the message originated as purpose, passion, platform, over four-plus years and 40 campuses, it now encompasses, heavily, mental health, being a KING/QUEEN every day of your life, and interpersonal relationships, as Rachel was a victim of domestic violence herself.

When she's not scaling the world's tallest freestanding mountain to raise money for ALS or speaking from a stage or computer near you, she enjoys working one-on-one to help others find their own personal #ImChangingtheNarrative, and reclaim their God-given JOY!

In our Fruit of the Spirit Series, Pastor Cray brings a message of KINDNESS.

James Earl Cray, a gifted, former college football athlete, and NFL prospect. This athletically gifted, former Troy State Wide Receiver successfully navigated his way through troubled times and a seven-year journey to find his true calling. He grew up in Southeast Georgia, where he was introduced to Apostolic Pentecostal beliefs. As a child, he was never short on confidence. He recalls moments when he would boldly dance in front of large church congregations; never being too bashful to show his love for God and the church. As he entered college at Troy State University in Alabama, like many young athletes, he was hit head-on with some very challenging moments. He experienced off-the-field trouble and dealt with attitude problems. But, throughout all this, he constantly remained faithful and trusted in God.

In 2005, at the age of twenty-two, he spoke at what he considered to be his first sermon. The sermon was held at First Missionary Baptist Church, in Troy, AL. James recalls having so many thoughts and feelings running through his mind. He was excited, nervous, but overall, he was prepared to give the sermon. From that moment he knew that his life would never be the same and that God’s purpose for him was far greater than he or anyone had ever imagined.

Michael Airhart began his life’s work as an eight-year-old in a single-parent apartment in the projects on the South Side of Chicago. He just didn’t know it yet.It was there he learned to cook and he learned to sew. Most importantly, he learned to provide for himself, two brothers and others in the city’s largest public housing development, Altgeld Gardens. “Many of the parents were on drugs or just disappeared, so we had to survive,” recalls Michael, now 49. It was largely due to the young resourceful chef that many of them did. “Everyone in the projects knew about me. Everyone knew what I was capable of, that I cared for everyone. As a kid, I was the one who was serving food to the kids. I was the one knocking on project doors asking for a can of tomato sauce, spaghetti, sugar, whatever. I would actually put a meal together for my friends.”

Today, he is still known on the street as someone who cares. Seven days a week.

“It’s all I know,” he adds. “I can’t drive by a homeless person and not stop. I am going to have food in my truck. I will always have clothes, always have shoes, socks, T shirts, pants, underwear. I’m gonna make them over.” Six days a week, he’s out on the streets by 7 a.m. dispensing hot food from 15 or so pans out of his van. On some days, the clothes he hands out include Air Jordans, donated shoes he receives from all over the world through his Jordans for the Homeless program. Soon he will unveil his new gift, Chicago’s first food truck for the homeless, complete with a shower in the back.

Michael gives a message on Love.

Dr. Kiki Baker Barnes has distinguished herself as an outstanding professional, community servant, and mentor. She assumed the leadership role, athletic director, in Dillard’s athletic department in 2006. She simultaneously held the position of head coach of the women’s basketball team until March 2013. Her initial responsibility was to facilitate the return of the athletics program after it was shuttered following Hurricane Katrina. She has not only resurrected the program, but she has also grown the program into a national model of student-athlete success and community service. Since taking the helm, Dillard’s athletic program has seen the establishment of new sports teams and the university's first endowed athletic scholarship.

A leader in sports administration, she was recently named Interim Commissioner for the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). This is not her first stint with the GCAC as she was elected and served as President of the GCAC from 2009-2018, directing its growth after several universities departed for other conferences. Dr. Barnes has become a national expert in strategic planning, organizational management, and program revitalization leading her to accept positions as a member of several organizations such as the National Administrative Council of the NAIA, the NAIA Athletic Directors Association Board of Directors, and the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation Board of Directors.
