March 26, 2023: As we look around our community and our world, it is very easy to get discouraged by what we see. In many sectors of American life, the church appears to be defeated, lost, and irrelevant. Many churches are shrinking and dying. And we sit inside wringing our hands about how bad things have gotten. But imagine if it were worse. Imagine that we were captured and hauled off the land here to a foreign place with foreign gods. What then? Would we expect to see a revival? Growth of the people of God? A return from the dead? Today, from Ezekiel’s words, we will see that God’s word and God’s Spirit are required to bring us back from the dead. First, though, we must acknowledge the painful truth that death is the result of sin.
