This week’s recap of Beastars features multiple instances of the word “weird”. Original broadcast date March 2, 2023. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2023/03/binary-system-podcast-351-umbrella-academy-season-2-finale-and-oscar-opinions/

Since we've still got a few days till the return of Lore Olympus (and you better believe we're going into withdrawal aaaaaaa) this week Kathryn finished up season 2 of Umbrella Academy and boy howdy do we have some things to discuss.

This is less of a recap than a deep dive into everything we loved about the finale, with frequent pauses to wonder if they're playing fast and loose with Five's time-traveling powers, and whether or not the "new" Ben is going to be a jerk. (Elizabeth, who's watched season three, isn't saying a word, nuh uh.)

After that Elizabeth admits that season two of The Hunters is better than season one so she'll stop hate-watching it and start actually watching it. And they both approve of using The Last Bookstore as a filming location.

Finally they wrap up with a quick look at the distressingly few Oscar-nominated films they've seen: Wakanda Forever (cried within the first six minutes), Everything, Everywhere All At Once (anybody calling it "Oscar Bait" has clearly missed the weaponized butt-plugs) and Blonde (Ana de Armas does a good job, but seriously, eff that movie.)

This week's outro is a clip from Drive by Alex Productions.

Apologies for the background hum in some sections, Elizabeth's house-sitting this week and hadn't realized how very loud their freezer is.

Correction: Lila in Umbrella Academy doesn't really absorb or counter people's powers, she mimics them, but yes, only one at a time.

Correction #2 - Unbreakable didn't film at The House Of Secrets in Burbank (it was actually Ontario Street Comic Book shop in Pennsylvania) and Leland says most of the movies that shoot in the comic shop annex are student films, but the comic shop you see in BIg Bang Theory was based on House of Secrets.

Ted Lasso season 3 starts March 15. (Hurry up, Kathryn! - Elizabeth) (I'm going I'm going! - Kathryn)

Woo hoo, episode 350! We have absolutely no plans for this milestone, and when you get right down to it there's really not much special about the number except that it ends in "0". But still, woo!

What IS special about this episode is that it's our first foray into using Discord for the podcast. So while we recap a Welcome To Night Vale episode involving a magic show and Cecil trying (and failing) to punch someone, and also recap an Umbrella Academy episode involving quite a bit of death (y'all, Five is scary), you can also hear the stops, starts, and occasional cut-outs when Discord decided we didn't really need to hear everything at the correct volume. We also had to call in Tech Support (ie: Nathan) to figure out why Craig wouldn't stop recording, so we've included close to two minutes of flailing in the outro. You're welcome.

This week's outro is a clip from Dance Electro by Lite Saturation.

Correction: We somehow missed that the Glow Cloud's child is "they". Sorry about that.

Episodes 231 and 232 of Lore Olympus are available this week (if you Fast-Pass episode 232) and WE ARE SO HAPPY

Seriously you guys, there’s a long-awaited moment between the star-crossed lovers in episode 231 and it’s EVERYTHING THAT WE WANTED. The music (yes, there’s music in this episode, but it only works in the phone app for WebToons), the dialog, the friggin’ ARTWORK. Rachel Smythe absolutely knocked it out of the park. It almost makes up for the fact that Demeter shows her true colors in episode 232, so now THAT’S something that has to be dealt with.

After Lore Olympus, Kathryn recaps everything that went on in Season 2 episodes 5 and 6 of The Umbrella Academy (tldr: Klaus is an endearing jerk, the origin of the chimpanzee Pogo was surprisingly touching, I don’t know why anyone thinks a meeting with Reginald Hargreeves is going to go well, and the scene with Klaus, Alison, and Vanya getting drunk in a beauty parlor is one of my favorites in the series so far).

Episodes 229 and 230 of Lore Olympus are available this week (if you Fast-Pass episode 230) and WE ARE SO ANGRY.

I mean, yes, episode 229 was kind of sweet and surprisingly instructional as Persephone gets much-needed information about fertility goddesses from Metis, who's about as down-to-earth and helpful a Fertility Goddess as you'd want to meet. But episode 230 features the long-dreaded reveal of exactly what Demeter is willing to do in order to get Persephone to give up her dreams, and it's awful. Kudos to Rachel Smythe for not flinching away from showing exactly what it looks like when a person is willing to bully, guilt-trip, and emotionally abuse someone and claim they're doing all of it out of love.

The recap takes up the first half of the episode (with a digression to discuss the correct definition of "gaslighting" which Demeter's actions DEFINITELY ARE). After that we discuss S2Ep2 of The Umbrella Academy, the first three episodes of The Hunters, and a couple of things that Kathryn's finished up recently and has no idea what to think about them.

We're back home after all of our holiday and birthday travels, and on the latest episodes of Lore Olympus we...do NOT get the long-awaited reveal of what Apollo is up to and how his sister Artemis is handling it. But we do get a little bit of the origin story for Psyche. As a treat.

It's another edition of the Accidental Tangent podcast as we digress during our recap to discuss Persephone's extremely healthy ideas about the concept of virginity (can everyone please just stop defining women based on how many sexual partners they've had, kthxbye), and then during Elizabeth's recommendations about the Glass Onion movie she digressed to discuss motion-smoothing. (Did you know you can turn that off? You can totally turn that off.)

Kathryn meanwhile has completely failed to watch either Glass Onion or any more episodes of The Umbrella Academy, but she did watch a 2013 movie called Coherence, so the project to catch up on things is technically only ten years behind.

We did something different with the Night Vale recap this week, because it's really two stories in one: first we've got to talk about how much we haaaaaate Dr. Janet Lubelle and her stupid smug face, and she better not lay a finger on Carlos because we WILL riot.

Then go over the weird tarot cards that Cecil pulls from the deck and, seriously, have we mentioned how much we like tarot cards? We're not sure we believe they can tell the future, but man alive are they cool. So many interesting images, and they make the best Fan Art Bait.

Finally, we can't let it go by without making a fuss: this week marked the end of the My Dad Wrote a Porno podcast, eight years of hilariously awful, um, "erotic literature." We're sad of course, but they went out with a bang, and we've got some speculations about what they're up to next.

After the recap we touched on the first few episodes of Wednesday (spooky and kooky, as expected), went over the "Playing House" episode of Sandman (Morpheus is quickly becoming a big ol jerk) and wrapped up with a spoiler-free discussion of the final book in the Scholomance trilogy; look out for a spoiler-full discussion soon because we're going to have to TALK SOME MORE ABOUT ALL THAT BY GOD.

This week's outro is a song by our friend Fred Smith called "Wednesday's Lullaby" which he performed on his 8-string mandocello. https://www.instagram.com/cockandbullgame/

Happy Thanksgiving! (Or, if you don't celebrate Thanksgiving, Happy Thursday!)

Somehow after last week's recording we got on the subject of cookbooks, specifically the "Little House on the Prairie" cookbook that we checked out from the library a dozen times before we got smart and bought our own copies. And that led to a discussion about the best food in the Little House books, which led to the best food in all our favorite books, which led to us wondering why the heck we weren't recording this!?

Just in time for Thanksgiving, please enjoy a selection of our favorite foods from our favorite books (content warnings for any non-meat eaters out there, 'cause vegetarian this ain't), followed by a quick recap of Lore Olympus 219 and 220, because we're gonna stay on our arbitrarily determined schedule goshdarnit!

This week's outro is a clip from Electronic Sunrise by TeknoAXE.

If you're curious, here's a rundown of all the books we mention, and occasionally read passages from:

The Martian Chronicles - Ray Bradbury

Dune - Frank Herbert

Dragonsinger - Anne McCaffrey

The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe - C.S. Lewis

The Night Circus and The Starless Sea - Erin Morgenstern

The Grapes of Wrath - John Steinbeck

Personal Darkness - Tanith Lee

Crystal Singer and Killashandra - Anne McCaffrey

Heidi - Johhanna Spyri

Swiss Family Robinson - Johann David Wyss

Little Men - Louisa May Alcott

The Darkangel Trilogy - Meredith Ann Pierce

In The Night Garden - Catherynne Valente

The Hobbit - J.R.R Tolkien

Perelandra - C.S. Lewis

Dragonlance Series - Laura and Tracy Hickman

Little House On The Prairie Series - Laura Ingalls Wilder

The article Elizabeth was talking about is Heidi And Her Cheese. https://topographickitchens.substack.com/p/heidi-and-her-cheese

This week was one of those Night Vale recaps where we took way too many notes and got dangerously close to just repeating the episode word for word because it was so, freaking, CLEVER. We're back with an actual audio episode this week as Kathryn's on the mend from the "NOT COVID Thank You Very Much But Still Pretty Annoying" Plague, and thank goodness, because we've got to talk about the first two episodes of the third (and final!) season of Lore Olympus. Will Hades and Persephone figure out exactly what they are to each other? Will Zeus leave them alone? Is this the calm before the storm? WHAT IS APOLLO UP TO YOU KNOW IT'S SOMETHING.

(Major spoilers for episodes 207 and 208, obv.)

After that it's even more spoilers for The Sandman, because we've both watched episode two and we love everything they're doing EXCEPT FOR THIS ONE THING. NEIL.

But do you know what other Earth-shattering events have happened? Auditions are open for the Night Vale Community Players production of Our Town, and Cecil is trying out for the part of The Stage Manager. The director's going for more of a traditional interpretation (not like her Tartuffe in the nude, or The Iceman Cometh in space). But after growing up inside and adjacent to the theater, we can pretty much say that any live performance of a classic - even a really weird interpretation - counts to us as a "traditional" theater experience.

Except Cecil's interpretation of Equus. Good God. No, Cecil, Equus is not just a story about "a little boy who likes horsies", the heck is the matter with you?

The theater-centric episode lets us wander off into tangents like Kurosawa's Throne of Blood and Lin Manuel Miranda's In the Heights. Elizabeth's also seen all of season 2 of Raised By Wolves, and we have to talk for a bit about the endless creativity of Transformers fan artists. (Mermaid variants are optional, crossovers with Gargoyles are fairly common, smut is pretty much mandatory.)

This week's outro is a clip from notchpeak v2 by Tea K Pea.

It's another fun, short-story type of Welcome To Night Vale episode this week. This might be another good introductory episode for someone who isn't familiar with Night Vale, even if they don't know who Intern Nazari is, or what this conspiracy theory is about the moon not being real, or why people seem to have trouble pronouncing the word "Michigan".

But what we really want to talk about is the 1987 horror movie "Angel Heart", which Elizabeth watched this week for the first time in a long while, and which just so happened to turn 35 years old last Sunday. Listen in as we absolutely fail to give a coherent recap of this film, and instead talk about all the bits we liked and all the random digressions we wander off to as soon as we get distracted.

(Not kidding about the digressions, this episode shows a pretty good cross-section of our brains as we discuss (among other things): the NFL concussion scandal, an off-the-grid city in the Sonoran Desert, the temperature of the water at California beaches versus Florida beaches, that time we watched Gone With The Wind in history class, and some of the horror movies we watched a few decades ago in Elizabeth's apartment in Asheville.)

“No weather, no war, no man, no illness, and no god may stop me from my duty. All people deserve prompt delivery. And all people eventually get what they deserve.”

This week's episode of Welcome To Night Vale is a fascinating little short story about Night Vale's newest character: The Delivery Man. If there's one thing we've learned from the pandemic, it's that we all love getting a package delivered. Even if it's being delivered by a mysteriously threatening figure with a drawn-on face, ground-down teeth, and a weird habit of counting his steps. ("Goooood old five...")

After the recap we read aloud a Binary System Podcast super-fan's letter about how to love a series with some disappointing episodes and a toxic fanbase, and how to keep loving a series when the creator turns out to be a pretty rotten human being.

We also talk (again) about some of the movies and TV shows we really need to catch up on, with a plan to finish at least one of them in time for next week's podcast. Really. We mean it this time.

This week's outro is a clip from Borderland (Frau Holle Remix) by Holle Mangler.

If you've been reading Lore Olympus (and if you're not you really should) you know that everybody's been waiting over two years for Hades to find out a certain piece of information, and how he'd react when he did.

We found out this week, and it was everything we'd hoped for. (Obviously, MAJOR SPOILERS AHOY in this episode.)

And after the recap we plan our catch-up watch list, including the Hawkeye series and Spider-Man: Far From Home. (No, not No Way Home. We still haven't watched Far From Home YES we know, we're bad at movies, but that's beyond the pale, honestly.)

And for everyone who's been checking in, friend and sister of the podcast Hannah Wallace is home from the hospital following her surgery and she's doing way better.

The outro music this week is a clip from Hachimantai Snow by Maarten Schellekens.

Well, we had "The Many Lives of Frank Chen", "The Many Many Lives of Frank Chen", and "The Nearly Infinite Lives of Frank Chen". It makes sense that the saga of Night Vale's most famous dearly-departed would wrap up with "The Life of Frank Chen."

It's a quiet, weirdly heartwarming story that's very satisfying (other than the fact that we still don't know what's going on with Hiram McDaniels). After the recap we discuss the latest two episodes of Lore Olympus (I hope the characters are all cozy under that BUS everyone keeps throwing each other under), and take an odd tangent into a medical drama series from the 1980's and wonder if we're just imagining that streaming services are chopping bits out of our favorite old TV shows FOR NO REASON.

This week we're recapping a Night Vale episode where Silas the Thief rants about his ex girlfriend, and a Lore Olympus episode where Hermes takes up all the time on the stand.

Hang on. We've been here before. https://pixelatedgeek.com/2021/10/binary-system-podcast-286-wtnv-195-silas-the-thief-and-lore-olympus/

But yes, first we discuss the Night Vale news that gives us A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT OUTLOOK on one of the main characters, and then we talk about Lore Olympus and how we hope Thanatos is okay following the Daphne situation, but not too okay because he really is a narc.

And then every time we start to close out the episode we think of something new, including but not limited to: Under the Skin (Meh), the T'challa episode of What If (yay!), Chris Pratt and John Mulaney and para-social relationships, Y The Last Man, Saga, Terry Moore, rewatching Loki, and taking Transformers off our pull list WE DON'T KNOW WHO WE ARE ANYMORE.

With all of the amazing content that we need to get caught up on, it's no surprise to anybody that we're taking the time to watch TV and movies that we've already seen. Multiple times.

But, you know, pandemic, serotonin, comfort watching. So Elizabeth's rewatching Peaky Blinders and Kathryn rewatched Sunshine, but we did at least catch the new Hawkeye trailer, and Kathryn saw the first episode of Marvel's What If.

AND of course we read the latest Lore Olympus, which is mostly Hades being sweet and nurturing and spinning fantasies for Persephone about apartments with heated floors because he knows what she likes.

(Also we're looking for board game recommendations for our family trip to the mountains. Tabletop fans, go nuts.)

The outro music this week is a clip from Sol Aestas by TeknoAXE.

Correction: we said we read Lore Olympus #171 this week. We meant #172.

It's a pretty quick recap of Welcome to Night Vale This Week (TL:DR Consultants are annoying even in Night Vale, and Elizabeth can do a very passable imitation of the "You've got a message" sound effect on Slack). And that's good, because we needed to devote a lot of time to a very in-depth discussion of the latest episode of Lore Olympus, which has the fallout from Daphne's confrontation with Apollo. A quick summary. Ahem.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

The outro music this week is a clip from Before The Countdown, by Maarten Schellekens.

We've already talked enough about Loki this month so we don't need to talk about the season finale AHAHAHAHAHA, kidding, of course we do.

After a quick SitRep where we talk about our trip to visit family (yay!), the rising COVID numbers (boo!) and the second season of Love Death + Robots (..meh?) we fangirl one more time over the Loki season in general and the final episode in particular. (ALL the spoiler warnings for this one.)

After that we touch on Beastars, SDCC announcements, Limetown, My Dad Wrote a Porno, and the recent developments in Lore Olympus (we know who that bird is IT'S ON NOW.)

If you're looking for a detailed breakdown of this year's Oscar ceremony and all the winning films...this is not the podcast for that. Because we barely saw any of the nominees and we certainly didn't watch the ceremony. Not that it stops us from having opinions!

So after what we laughingly call a recap, we jump into Bojack Horseman season 4 (all the spoilers!), Twin Peaks the Return (more spoilers!) and the latest chapter of Lore Olympus (even more spoilers well okay just a few, there wasn't as much to spoil this week?)

The outro this week is a clip from "Square Boy Shuffle" by TeknoAxe.

If you want a podcast that actually does watch the movies and the ceremony, we've mentioned the Best Pick Podcast several times, you can find them here. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-best-pick-movie-podcast/id1333513250

After this week's SitRep on the vaccine situation (Mom, Dad, and Nathan are 2 for 2, Kathryn and Hannah are 1 for 2, and Elizabeth's 0 for 2.) (Hurry up Elizabeth! - Kathryn) (I'M WORKING ON IT. - Elizabeth) we jump right into Lore Olympus because holy hell did you see what happened to Minthe??

After that, massive great big spoiler warnings for the last two episodes of Bojack Horseman season 3. If you've never watched the show, these episodes were kind of a big deal. (If you have watched the show you know exactly what we're talking about. Wow. WOW.)

Then we go over the first episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (it's mostly us going "All the Sam Flying Scenes, ALL OF THEM"), plan our assembly of the Flame Toys Windblade, and ask our listeners for transcription app recommendations.

The outro this week is a clip from "This is a Terrible Song" by TeknoAxe. (It was his April Fools Day song, it's actually very good.)

It's a beautiful day in Night Vale, and it's time once again to run around in circles and PANIC because the Librarians have escaped their cages. Fortunately, heroic teen militia leader Tamika Flynn is here to save the day by...helping the Librarians get their paperwork sent in so they can form a union. And she does it with a minimum of violence, and a few well-deserved pokes at the idea that anyone deserves a terrible working environment or to be arrested when they're not doing anything wrong, HET HEM, current political climate.

After the recap we had to discuss Bojack Horseman again, since Kathryn just watched the fan-favorite Season Three episode "A Fish Out Of Water". We also continue our general sense of bafflement at the the way some people behave lately (ie: people who get mad about mask mandates and then get angry when COVID cases rise, private landowners who do nothing about the risk of radioactive wastewater flooding part of Florida FOR YEARS, and authors who build up a loyal fanbase, and then decide to treat some of them like crap FOR NO REASON.)

The outro this week is a clip from the soundtrack of "A Fish Out Of Water", composed by Jesse Novak.

Okay, so according to the latest Night Vale episode Director's Notes (which you can get if you sign up to their Patreon, hint hint), Kathryn may have misspoken a little. The episode wasn't "weird for weird's sake", but it still doesn't have any deep, hidden meaning. It's also appropriate that Elizabeth was so taken with the way Cecil announced the town's visitors because it turns out that the language used was entirely the point.

And if you're wondering, Cecil pronounces it "NephaLEEM", and on Supernatural they say "NEPHalem", and no we don't know which one is right.

If the weird episode wasn't enough weirdness for one week, after the recap we talk about WandaVision and Lore Olympus, answer a viewer question about where we want to go as soon as public spaces are an option again, and then discuss the theory that Mr. Potatohead with the gender removed is one step closer to being an angelic being and is also JUST A TOY.

This week's outro is a clip from Chatterbox by TeknoAxe

When it comes to the season two finale of The Mandalorian, we really don't have a choice: we're going to have to geek out about it for fifteen minutes. We know, we know, it's a tough job but somebody's gotta do it. (Also, the mid-credits scene: eeeeeeeeeee!)

Before that we have our weekly SitRep-With-Beers which, because it's Christmas, is going to stay positive YES IT IS FOR CRYING OUT LOUD THERE WILL BE NO COMPLAINING AT CHRISTMAS. And afterwards we break down everything that happened in the latest chapter of Lore Olympus. Which was both a lot, and not as much as we wanted. (Somebody needs to talk to Hades and Artemis about Persephone and they need to do it four chapters ago...)

It's the third of Welcome To Night Vale's Monologue episodes (yes, third, not second, shame on us for forgetting The April Monologues in 2016). Once more we hear musings from Michelle Nguyen at Dark Owl Records, Steve Carlsberg, and The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives In Your Home.

The theme for our SitRep this week is mostly us going "OMG did you hear who ELSE has caught COVID-19?!" So we lightened the tone to talk about the other things we're watching and which we HIGHLY RECOMMEND (the "How To Drink" youtube channel, "The Good Place" Season 4, and of course "The Haunting" and the "Haunting of Hill House", because it's October and we've got to have the horror.)

This week’s outro is Michelle Nguyen's current favorite song Karma Police by Radiohead. Well, part of it anyway; Michelle thinks anything after the first 26 seconds of a song is just padding.

First up this week is a recap of OUR FAVORITE KIND of Night Vale episode: a stand alone, gloriously strange list of weirdness. (Brie Williams is our favorite guest writer, since she also wrote “Guidelines For Disposal,” another wonderfully weird list episode.)

After that we fangirl some more about Lore Olympus (the artwork is BEAUTIFUL the story is AMAZING and Apollo is a JERK) before doing a spoileriffic deep dive into Devs. Seriously, if you were confused about the ending to the series…well, this is probably not going to help much, but we do unpack a few of the concepts anyway.

No Night Vale episode to recap, so this week we tried something different. We both said we were going to watch something that's been on our to-do list...and then we watched them.

So Kathryn watched the 2007 movie Sunshine https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448134/ (written by Alex Garland) and Elizabeth watched the first episode of Devs (written and directed by Alex Garland, can you see a theme here?), and we took some digressions to mention the TV shows Lucifer and Deadwood and fangirled all over the place about a webcomic Elizabeth found called Lore Olympus. https://www.webtoons.com/en/romance/lore-olympus/episode-1/viewer?title_no=1320&episode_no=1

This week’s outro music is a clip from Runner by Six Umbrellas (which we used waaaay back on episode 105, but we like it so we're using it again.) https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Six_Umbrellas/The_Psychadelic_And/1_Six_Umbrellas_-_Runner

Correction: the guy we were trying to think of in the Devs show is, of course, Nick Offerman, who played the meat-loving Ron Swanson in Parks and Recreation, which is why it's so hilarious to see him chowing down on a salad in Devs. https://youtu.be/r1kP93U3unk

After a quick coronavirus sitrep from us and the family (short version: everybody's fine, wash your hands!) we switch to a lighter note with a Welcome To Night Vale recap, as the telepathic cult from the Desert Otherworld invades Night Vale and promises to kill anybody who can't hear the Pilot's voice in their brains. So, uh, maybe not that light?

For real though, we go way lighter after that, with a quick discussion of Star Trek: Discovery (so good!), Devs (so surreal!), Ozark (so irritating!) and Beastars (so weird! But beautiful! But weird! The bit with the eggs!)

This week’s outro is a clip from Apex by Bio Unit. https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Bio_Unit/Malfunction/Apex_1252

Correction: Elizabeth said she was done with the first season of Star Trek: Discovery. Turns out, she thought the season finale was episode 8, when really it's episode 15, because she didn't click the "show more" button on the episode list. What a noob.

Things are progressing quickly in the five-part story about the missing Delta Flight 18713 and the escaped inmates of the Night Vale asylum. The Desert Otherworld is coming into play, and there's a good chance that a mad pilot who can read minds is trying to cross over to our world so he can take over the town.

It's a surprisingly complex story that for some reason we didn't need much time to cover (seriously, ten minutes tops). After that we talked about the Netflix anime Beastars (messed up in an intriguing way and quite gorgeous to look at), Picard (meh), Discovery (much better than Picard), and the Youtube channel Overly Sarcastic Productions (utterly hilarious).

And then of course we have the weekly update about the COVID-19 status in California, Florida, and North Carolina, including some discussion about what isn't a violation of the First Amendment, and our adventures in getting groceries delivered during a pandemic.

(tl;dr: Everyone's fine.)

It's the Welcome to Night Vale episode that Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor described as "maybe the most upsetting thing we've ever written." Listen in as we recap a one-person show featuring unearthly roommates, really cruel pranks, and something called "the tarantula incident".

After that we talk a little more about the ongoing COVID-19 situation, Devs, Altered Carbon, Picard...hang on, didn't we talk about all of those things last week? Just to mix things up, we also discuss Highlander, cancelled conventions, and some of the things you can do to help. So the plan was to have a quick talk about an Oscar-winning film and a debriefing on the events of last weekend. It spun out of control within the first fifteen minutes, of course.

Listen in as we go over Parasite (many many spoilers), Snowpiercer, Inception, the trailer for the upcoming Netflix Transformers series, the firing of Didio, the books we’re reading, the conventions we’re getting ready for, twitter's dumpster fire Windblade “discussion,” and more made-up stories about our sponsor.

This week’s outro is a clip from Mirrors by Superhumanoids from their Parasite Paradise album. https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Superhumanoids/Parasite_Paradise/02_-_Superhumanoids_-_Mirrors

Correction: the dish cooked in Parasite was called Ramdon, and it's a real thing (combination of Ramen and Udon) and you can find the recipe and a lot of cool information about it here. https://uproxx.com/life/ram-don-recipe-parasite-movie/

Correction the second: Windblade is Flame Toys' first attempt at a female transformer model, they haven't tried an Arcee. (Yet.)

Correction the third: yes there is a ton of information about lightsaber crystals and most of it seems to be perfectly canon, we should've checked out Wookiepedia first. https://uproxx.com/life/ram-don-recipe-parasite-movie/

And a clarification: Kathryn mentioned needing to pick up bondo before NC Comicon in March. We probably should have mentioned it's for the EmojiBot helmet, we went into more detail in last week's episode. https://pixelatedgeek.com/2020/02/binary-system-podcast-211-wtnv-162-alpha/

Since there's a lot going on in this episode, here's a breakdown of the timeline:

Snowpiercer at 12:20

Inception at 14:32

Netflix Transformers Trailer 17:15

Wildblade model twitter dumpster fire 18:50

This week’s Night Vale recap is full of ambitious moms, genius daughters, mysterious voices, missing planes and REALLY STARTLING WEATHER. Plus Kathryn wants to rewatch Snowpiercer (because Parasite) and Elizabeth rewatched Looper (because Knives Out) and we're both finishing up Bojack Horseman, The Crown, Great British Bake Off, and the latest EmojiBot cosplay incarnation.

Most importantly, live on the recording we brainstorm a new Doctor Who regeneration, companion, and adventure! (Spoilers: the Doctor's Tom Hiddleston. I mean come on, this is us, it's either going to be Tom or it's going to be a Transformer.) (....) (sound of frantic scribbling of notes for later)

The holidays are over, and convention season doesn't get geared up for a few weeks, so now's the time for us to get caught up on all the things we've been meaning to watch because we are so, so bad at TV and movies.

Listen in as we set up our homework for the next month, including the Mandalorian, Fleabag, Toy Story 4, Frozen II, Ad Astra, Parasite, Devs, Doctor Who, and the Repair Shop from the BBC, plus some random comments on Reylo fan art, Great British Bake Off, 3D printers, and the Harleen series. As the well-organized podcast we are, seeing as how this episode drops on Halloween, we recorded an episode all about our favorite Halloween traditions. HA. Kidding. We totally forgot what day it would be posted until the end of the episode.

Instead, we talked about the one "unforgivably cheesy" moment in Stranger Things; about how 90s nostalgia is 80s nostalgia with a hangover; about how "Polly just can't have nice things" on Peaky Blinders (SPOILERS); the 1930s movie Freaks being a genre to itself; clever Halloween costumes; and how we recently tried to outdo each other with scary youtube clips AND NOW WE'RE HIDING UNDER THE BED.

This week's outro music is a clip from Retro Future Nights by TeknoAXE. https://youtu.be/D_jQLR6zq30

Disturbing content warning! The Selfie From Hell short film we mentioned is here https://youtu.be/EhAFyaObY6U, and the Nun trailer is here https://youtu.be/pzD9zGcUNrw, and the Robin Williams One Hour Photo clip is here https://youtu.be/EHUTjlhF6QQ. (The Selfie one and One Hour Photo one are possibly not safe for work on account of being disturbing. The One Hour Photo one has a LOT of gore.)

Correction: Regarding Peaky Blinders, at one point we referred to Thomas Shelby as Polly Grey's brother; he's actually her nephew, which honestly makes him arranging Polly's marriage even more strange.

Heads up: ALL the spoilers for this one, since this episode was so much weirder than we thought it'd be, and we thought it'd be weird.

After 20 years we know everybody has already said just about everything that can be said about this movie. And that certainly isn't going to stop us from fangirling all over it some more. (I mean, that never stopped us before, right? Does anything stop us from fangirling all over the place? Don't answer that.)

Listen in as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Blair Witch Project and go over all the tidbits we turned up in our research ("research" meaning the director's commentary and the imdb trivia) about the ultimate (as far as we're concerned) shaky-cam movie.

And because we never can stay on topic for very long, we also touch on: the first episode of Stranger Things season 3, the first three episodes of Jessica Jones season 2, The Great British Bake-Off, The Crown, The Wicked and the Divine, Motor Girl, and Starscream in gym shorts.

After that we fangirl about Good Omens and how we'd happily watch David Tennant read the phone book if he's also mugging for the camera in his demon contact lenses, and then we touch on the new Terminator: Dark Fate trailer, before finishing up with Snowpiercer because it only took Elizabeth five years to watch that one.

We now know why the internet was kind of going crazy after the latest Night Vale episode dropped.

It wasn't just the very on-the-nose metaphor for what veterans go through when coming back from active duty, or the blistering take on the military industrial complex, and how leaders can only convince the population that they're "winning" the war if the war never stops. No, this episode is particularly dark because Night Vale's Blood Space War involves time travel, and now some very important people are being wiped from existence.

Night Vale ditches the multi-part episode theme (this week, anyway) to bring us a callback episode featuring a couple of familiar villains. (If you're not sure what's going on, listen to the episodes "A Story About You" and "A Story About Them". You still won't know what's going on after that, but those are pretty good episodes.)

After that we do the usual potpourri of topics, jumping from Twin Peaks to Patrick Melrose, to our minor connection to a Hollywood screenwriter, to Vampire Diaries' version of "The Red Wedding," and then a couple quick thoughts on the series finale of Sense8. (Which Elizabeth didn't like, but she understands that some of the fans really, really did.)

Alice isn’t Dead returns for its final season! While recapping the first chapter of Part 3 we also wander into some brief thoughts on gun ownership (spoilers: we do not want them to take your guns away) and then we jump right into American Gods: how the show is really different from the book and how much we LOVE IT.

Then it’s on to the San Diego Book Crawl, last weekend’s Transformers Earth Wars “Victorion” event, Gregory McGuire, Phillip Pullman, and a little bit about Pokemon Go that segued into Zombies Run. No, we don’t know either.

(Also we don’t have much new news on the IDW Transformers situation, but we’re always up for some rampant speculation.)

OMG. You guys. You know when we warn everyone that we're about to spoil the hell out of the latest Welcome To Night Vale episode? Well you better take us seriously this week, because the final episode of "A Story Of Love And Horror" was hands down the most depressing Night Vale episode ever and we're going to spoil the hell out of it.

After that we scrape ourselves off the floor long enough to recap the next Night Vale episode "A Door Ajar Part 1," and debrief on North Carolina Comicon and American Gods, but seriously you guys, that Love and Horror episode left us a little traumatized. And angry.

The outro music this week is a clip from Payload by Metre. http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Metre/Circuit_1731/Payload_1125

Not sure what's going on lately, but there's a wealth of topics that we could turn into podcasts this month. So many fun things going on: the Oscar Nominated Animated Shorts are playing at theaters, there's a new Welcome to Night Vale episode to recap, we've got the Hannibal series to review, a list of helpful movie/tv sites to compile, and the number of songs we'd like to talk about from the WTNV Weather segment just keep adding up.

...not that we're ready to talk about any of that now of course.

Listen in as we go over all the topics that'll come up in the next few podcasts as soon as we're capable of discussing them, including Night Vale episodes that haven't broadcast yet and movies and TV we haven't finished watching. Plus some random google searches, and Cricket the cat getting bitey because ow ow quit it cat ow ow. In short, a podcast that went off the rails in under nineteen minutes.

This week's outro music is Dragon by Podington Bear. http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Podington_Bear/none_given_1790/Dragon

The Binary Podcast team may not see the latest blockbusters on opening night. Or opening week. Or the week after that...

Okay, so maybe it takes us a while to get around to things. But we make up for it with almost an hour of fangirling.

Listen in as we spoil all the things and talk about Wonder Woman and Blade Runner 2049. Sure we discuss Amazon warriors and angsty replicants, but then we wander down tangents like American Horror Story, San Diego versus Los Angeles when it comes to the “Who’s Going To Turn Into A Garbage Dump First?” question, CGI super jumps, eating bugs voluntarily, and existentialism regarding existence after death and pragmatism versus faith. No, really, we do. But we also talk about pretty superheroes having sex, so there’s a balance.

Outro song this week is 60 seconds of the Wonder Woman theme, because we couldn't resist.

Both branches of Binary System Podcast are once again on the road this week, so we recorded a 7-minute podcast. And still managed to fit in the Sense8 and Till All Are One cancellations, American Gods, how we haven't seen Wonder Woman yet, how Elizabeth has seen Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2, and how Kathryn is still trying to get through Iron Fist (it's...not going well.)

EDITED TO ADD: Elizabeth mentions that she didn't understand what was going on in the final panel of the most recent issue of Transformers Lost Light. Well James Roberts himself has tweeted the answer to us, which was awfully nice of him. You know how we always open the podcast by saying you should listen to the Welcome To Night Vale episode first? Well this week you REALLY NEED TO LISTEN TO THE EPISODE FIRST. This was one of those episodes that's surreal and disjointed and hard to understand and then when you get to the end you realize they were giving you clues about what was really going on THE ENTIRE TIME.

There's also some stuff about Peaky Blinders and M. Night Shyamalan, Transformers Combiner Wars, and the new Transformers Earth Wars game that Kathryn hasn't been able to put down yet.

Original broadcast date March 2, 2017. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2017/03/binary-system-podcast-72-oscar-reactions/

This week the twins discuss the Oscars, and by "discuss" we mean "do a full body cringe at the awkwardness of watching them give Best Picture to the wrong movie."

But we get around to mentioning which movies won what and which ones we wished won (say THAT five times fast.) And later Kathryn explains why the show Lucifer is pretty ridiculous and why she's completely unable to stop watching it.

Correction: We'd mentioned the filmmaker behind The White Helmets didn't attend the Oscars as a protest against the Travel Ban. Actually that was Asghar Farhadi, the director of The Salesman, which won for Best Foreign Language film, who didn't attend as a protest and "out of respect for the people of my country." Khaled Khatib, the cinematographer for The White Helmets, COULDN'T attend the Oscars because, according to CNN and Fox (we aim to be impartial here) his visa was canceled by the Syrian regime. (We think. Early reports said the US blocked him from entering, but apparently they blocked him because he didn't have a visa, because it was canceled.) So that's what's going on there.

Correction the second: Turns out the dates mentioned for the Oak City Comic Con were also incorrect; it actually takes place on March 18-19, not 17-18. Because why would we verify things BEFORE we mention them on the podcast?

So, The Walking Dead, huh? How about that episode? Lots of important character development there. The cinematography was pretty good, and the lighting director really had to...oh who am I kidding? That episode was brutal and we're still mad!

Sit back for a half hour of the twins going AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

We've also got a look at the brand new book Feeding Hannibal, because it wouldn't be a Halloween episode if we didn't talk Walkers AND cannibals.

Things are a little tense in Night Vale right now. Mayor Cardinal has opened negotiations with Hiram McDaniel's sister Hadassah, who's acting as representative of The Five-Headed Dragon world. The Mayor wants Hiram to face the consequences of attempted assassination of a head of state; Hadassah wants Hiram extradited back to their own world for punishment (said punishment consists of getting a sticker that says "I Overthrew!", since that's how government works dontcha know).

So after we discussed dragons and destruction and strange spaceships that don't seem to have a point, we also talked about Looper, Penny Dreadful, and Luke Cage. Ah, Luke Cage. We're a little worried we might catch some flak for this one. Listen in to find out why.

No Welcome To Night Vale recap this week, since the Binary System Podcast duo has been traveling all over time and space this month. Well, all over space anyway. Okay, we each spent a week in Florida visiting the 'rents. The point is, we're tired.

Not too tired, since we were able to read the latest issues of Tranformers MTMTE and Marvel's Civil War II (warning: massive spoilers and speculations on our part to follow), and then watch The Night Manager series, the last season of Hannibal, a tiny bit of X-Men: Apocalypse, and the first two episodes of season two of Broadchurch (ouch, not sure how much more of that we can watch.)

And then Netflix had to go release the next seasons of Luther and Penny Dreadful, so now we've got even more to catch up on so we can talk about it on this podcast. It's a tough job blah blah somebody's got to blah blah so on and so forth.

(Sorry for some audio weirdness, Elizabeth was trying a new thing with the editing software. Totally didn't work! Won't be doing again! Moving right along!)

If all the news stories about travel delays are getting you down, you'll be happy to hear that the 12:37 to Night Vale has arrived right on time! Well, one hundred years late. On tracks that don't exist anymore. At a station that was torn down and turned into a baseball field decades ago. Oh, and no one who goes inside has been heard from since. All aboard!

Listen in as the twins dissect the latest episode of Welcome To Night Vale, then ramble some rambles about Stranger Things, Suicide Squad, Zootopia, Batman v Superman, Inception, Niagara Falls, fan art, and maybe just a little bit of Pokemon Go, and how to pretend that's not what you're doing with your phone.
