Join Dr. John Konicek as we dive further into the second Beatitude where Jesus declares: "Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted." These words echo the words of the prophet Isaiah in chapter 61. In this passage, Isaiah announces that God has sent him to comfort all who mourn. Each of us must ask ourselves how God is requesting us to do the same. The same spirit of God that was upon Isaiah is upon you.  To whom is God asking you to bring God's comfort?

Welcome to the first episode of our brand new monthly podcast on the Beatitudes. Look for new episodes on the last Tuesday of each month for the next 8 months as we unpack what it means to be Christian Disciples in Mission who are Living Beyond Sunday through the Beatitudes.

Saint Paul says that what truly counts is “faith working through love” (Gal 5:6).  May Jesus’ words in the Beatitudes keep us close to him in the service, love, and compassion of all God’s people.  Let us continue to seek growth in our knowledge and understanding of the Beatitudes and the great gift they are to all people of faith.

In this episode, Dr. John Konicek, our Director of Parish Spirituality & Adult Formation, breaks open the first Beatitude; "Blessed are the poor in spirit."

" The Art of Forgiveness"- January 30, 2018

Clearly in Jesus' teaching a requirement for discipleship is to have a forgiving heart. Jesus Himself modeled his teaching from the cross. But forgiveness is really a process with specific steps toward the goal of forgiveness. In our time together, we will identify those steps of forgiveness and in the end perhaps make the idea of forgiveness less daunting.

From a Roman prison, Paul, "in chains," writes to his converts in the thoroughly Roman city of Philippi to thank them for their supportive gift. In his letter, Paul specifies how being "in Christ" is an enterprise of joy, even in the midst of suffering. Paul's advice to his beloved Philippians applies to us as well, teaching us that the joy of our lives is proclaiming "Jesus Christ is Lord!"

In Christian marriage, spouses model the love and self-gift of Christ. By giving of themselves and serving one another, their family, and community, they help one another live out Christ’s call to discipleship, love, and service. The Sacrament of Marriage provides a foundation for a family committed to community, solidarity, and Jesus’ mission in the world.

Sin ruptures not only our relationship with God but also with our brothers and sisters. By the nourishing light of the Holy Spirit, we are able to prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation by examining our consciences to identify those ways in which we are not in right relationship with God and with others. This examination also challenges us to recognize our own participation in the “structures of sin” that degrade others’ lives and dignity. Through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, God offers mercy and forgiveness. In response to this gift, we are called to become vehicles of Christ’s love, making amends and restoring justice and the bonds that have been broken.

In the Church's Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, through the ministry of the priest, it is Jesus who touches the sick to heal them from sin – and sometimes even from physical ailment. His cures were signs of the arrival of the Kingdom of God. The core message of his healing tells us of his plan to conquer sin and death by his dying and rising.

The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient.

When the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God's will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age.
