Bethel Lutheran Church is one church in two locations. We have campuses in both Fergus Falls and Battle Lake, Minnesota. "Our mission is to proclaim the message of Jesus Christ so that people come to faith in Jesus and live for Him." Our vision is to make disciples of Jesus who, by God's grace, BELIEVE (a personally held faith in Jesus Christ) BELONG (a shared faith in Christian community) BUILD FAITH@HOME (a heritage of faith in Christian homes).
(Sermon begins at 8:43)
Jude wrote this letter for 2 reasons: he wanted to expose the false teachers that had infiltrated the Christian community, and he wanted to encourage Christians to stand firm in the faith and fight for the truth. In this series we'll consider what it means for us to fight for "the truth" in a world that's only committed to "my truth."

The good life we pursue belongs to those who belong to the kingdom of God, not those who try hard or get lucky. And those who belong to the kingdom of God are those described in the beatitudes. We are, by God's grace, those described here in Matthew 5:1-12. We are "blessed" people. "Happy" people who both now have and will one day have everything Jesus came to bring us! Our pursuit of happiness both starts and ends with Jesus' pursuit of us.

Think you know the Christmas story? It's more than a sweet 'once upon a time' story that cycles back around the same time each year. It's the story behind all our stories - it's a love story, sad story, war story, action/adventure story, and best of all, a real life story that is still being written today and that includes us!

Worship Songs: - God Really Loves Us - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAr8IZeGtY0 - It is So - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiuOTC1ucY0
Discussion Questions: 1. So, what IS the worst job you've ever had? 2. Recall and retell how both Elijah and the widow were being taught to trust God for "daily bread." 3. The widow was gathering sticks when Elijah met her. In the message this became a metaphor for hopelessness. Do you know and see someone "gathering sticks?" How is God sending you to them to bring hope? 4. In v.18 the widow said to Elijah "What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?” Of course he didn't, but it felt that way to her. How is this question: a) on the minds of people even today b) answered in Jesus and the cross?
Worship Songs: - Crown Him - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWMaKphipQw - There is One Gospel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmBcTrDu4O4

Pastor Rich spoke of some common ways that people often misunderstand forgiveness. Do any of those resonate with you? 3. Like Philemon, is there a need for you to let the gospel message go deeper in your own heart and forgive a brother or sister in the Lord?
Worship Songs: - God So Loved - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jasoo3UDSwY - There is One Gospel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmBcTrDu4O4
Discussion Questions: 1. What about Naaman's story strikes you as the most interesting or significant to your life today? 2. Draw out some contrasts between Naaman and the servant girl. How are they shown in contrast in the story? 3. The unforgettable character in our story is the servant girl. What role does she play in Naaman's life? 4. How is God using this story in your life today? What will you now believe, love, or do because of it?
Worship Songs: - House of the Lord - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqfV0zeEvT8 - What He's Done - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftPXcPxIG28
Discussion Questions: 1. Pastor Rich talked about how God uses Balaam to speak the word of the Lord to the Moabites and how he was also motivated by money- as a reminder that the power of God's word is not limited by the person speaking it. How have you seen that evident in your life/experience?
Worship Songs: - Who You Say I Am - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcC1Bp13n_4 - What He's Done - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftPXcPxIG28
Discussion Questions: 1. When you're in trouble, where do you typically turn for help? (Got an example?) 2. Why is turning to God an afterthought for many people today? Do you think that's always been the case or only lately? 3. The unforgettable character in our story today is the 3rd captain. What did he do differently, and how does he stand in contrast with the other characters in the story? 4. How is God using this story in your life today? What will you now believe, love, or do because of it?

Discussion Questions: 1. What church fights have you been a part of in the past? How have they shaped how you think about life in God’s family? 2. Pastor Rich talked about how God uses weakness (that is how he works!). How does that go against how we think things usually get done? 3. The story of John Mark shows us how there can be times in church life when a sharp disagreement may not be an issue of sin as much as competing values held to by different people. How does that help us to be gracious with others who may disagree with us?
Worship Songs: - Jesus Your Name - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJRtMiVrb4g - Christ our Hope in Life and Death - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPT5QEDf9bA
Discussion Questions: 1. Can you think of a modern story that compares to Shiphrah and Puah? Where someone feared God more than man and disobeyed the government? How did the story end? 2. Why do you think it is difficult for us in this day to fear God? What might this tell us about what we think God is? 3. How might God be calling you to fight against that which is evil today? 4. How might God be calling you to help women and children today who are vulnerable to the lie that the life of an unborn child can be ended?

Discussion Questions: 1. Pastor Rich spoke about the fact that we can pray anywhere at any time. Does this fit with your view of prayer? How can you increase your praying without ceasing? 2. Pastor Rich quoted Paul Tripp who said that “you are the most influential person in your life, because you talk with yourself the most.” How can you grow in acknowledging the reality that God is there with you in that ongoing conversation in your head. 3. Are your prayers going to wear well in the light of eternity? How much of what you pray for is about your comfort and how much says “God’s kingdom is coming?”

Discussion Questions: 1. Have you experienced God's powerful word in your own experience? When and how did it bring life to you? 2. Have you felt that you are entering a spiritual sword fight with a plastic knife? Forgetting the promise of God that his word is powerful and active? If so, ask God for forgiveness and for faith to trust in the power of His word. 3. Pastor Rich gave us 8 things that we can do to interact with God's Word... Hear it, Read it, Sing it, Marinate in in, Be changed by it, Study it, Stand on it, Believe it. Pick one or two of these that you can put into practice this next week.

What is your relationship to doubt, and what do you do when you have doubts? 4. How does God, Himself being our shield make a difference in how you view this particular piece of the armor of God?
Worship Songs: - God of Angel Armies - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOkImV2cJDg - He is Our God - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmBNn-u2vT4
Discussion Questions: 1. Is the Peace of God something that you are experiencing in your life? If not we would encourage you to trust in Jesus right now. He is the peace that we all need. 2. Pastor Rich spoke about actively bringing the gospel to others. Whom might God be calling you to share the good news of Jesus with? 3. Whom might God be calling you to listen to from a position of humility? To listen is to love, make some plans to have coffee or a meal with that person and listen to them. 4. How might the choices of your life be shaped by a misplaced value system- one that sees the gospel as optional rather than the life changing message that it is? Repent of this, ask God for wisdom on how your life should be shaped by the life giving message of peace.

Discussion Questions: 1. Pastor Dave shared that the “belt of truth” is more about being prepared for action rather than protected. How so? 2. Recall from the message what…? a. Jesus’ relationship is to the truth b. Satan’s relationship is to the truth 3. Practically speaking, what are some ways one could “gather up” and “tuck” the truth close to oneself? 4. Meditate and maybe share your reflections on this verse: “He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart.” (Isaiah 40:11)
Worship Songs: - Battle Belongs - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=johgSkNj3-A - God, You're so Good - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IIZIPtQuW8
Discussion Questions: 1. Do you recognize the battle that you are in as a follower of Christ? What are ways that Satan may be scheming against you even now? 2. Reflect on how you have been given the righteousness of Christ as a protection against the schemes of Satan. How does knowing that you are declared forgiven and credited with Christ righteousness protect your soul from Satan's lies? 3. If it is true that in the "Great Exchange" God takes all of the world's sin upon himself in the crucifixion of Jesus and then gives believers the righteousness of Christ, how does that help me look at myself and others with "new" eyes?
Worship Songs: - Our Great God - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-pZNULbJws - Battle Belongs - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=johgSkNj3-A
Discussion Questions: 1. What example can you think of from your life in which you took credit for something God did? 2. Paul says in Ephesians 6:12 "We do not wrestle against flesh or blood..." What impact does that have on how you look at and handle interpersonal conflict? 3. What does it look like to "put on" the armor of Christ? How do the other uses of this terminology in the New Testament help to illustrate how this should look in your life?
Worship Songs: - Christ the Lord is Risen Today - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNrV2fX5Qb4 - Death Was Arrested - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMsMiluCUUI
Discussion Questions: 1. If the best kind of joy is the joy you didn’t see coming, can you think of a joy that you’ve experienced in life like that?...one you didn’t or couldn’t have expected? 2. Jesus said that “You will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy”. What are some of the ways life works against the joy Jesus gives? 3. What are some ways you’ve coped with your sadness and pain? 4. How does Easter guarantee Jesus’ promise of joy? 5. Are you trusting the Risen Jesus as your savior and eternal Joy-Giver?
Worship Songs: - Hosanna - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnMevXQutyE - Behold Him - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_izK4kI_wmA
Discussion Questions: 1. With what mental image do you associate “spiritual warfare”? 2. Paul makes a point of saying that we don’t “wrestle with flesh and blood” but against Satan. How might that clarify the battle for you next time you find yourself in conflict with someone? 3. Recall the quote from Tim Downs about “psy ops” and how Alexander the Great used it against his enemies with oversized armor. What tricks does the Devil use on us today? 4. Of the pieces of armor listed by Paul, which do you need to take up today?
Worship Songs: - 10,000 Reasons - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcnG86xMT0Q - Christ is Mine Forevermore - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roQovDZeAWE
Discussion Questions: 1. Pastor Rich mentioned that we may go to one of 2 extremes… on one hand we may tend think that Satan is not really much of a problem, so we get apathetic, or we may go the other way and think that Satan is to blame for everything, all the time. Which tendency do you tend to gravitate towards? 2. The “Unholy Trinity” Satan, the World, and our Flesh- all work together to keep us in bondage to a lie. What might be a lie that you are believing about God, yourself, redemption, Heaven or Hell? 3. How might you take up the battle in your own life in some of the ways that Pastor Rich mentioned; repentance and faith, resting in the promises of God, feeding on God’s truth in his Word, by being conformed to His image, or by the renewing of your mind?

Discussion Questions: 1. Have a look at verses 1-9 again. Maybe even look back on Ephesians 5:21-33. Is there a theme you pick up here that Paul uses to guide us in all our human relationships? What is it? 2. How is honoring one’s parents different from obeying one’s parents? Got an example of honoring your father and mother? 3. What’s an example of a father exasperating his child? 4. Pastor Dave said to dad’s “you’re the spiritual thermostat in your home. Hot or cold - you’re setting the spiritual temperature in your home.” Respond to that statement.

Think of a young lady who one day hopes to be married. What is something that the panel of ladies said that you think would be helpful for her to hear or consider? 4. What happens in your heart and mind when you think of the ULTIMATE SUBMISSION by Jesus, Our Savior, at the cross? (the high and mighty becoming low and weak)

Discussion Questions: 1. To what or to whom do you find yourself looking to for your identity? If it’s God, what is his biggest competition in your life? 2. The blessed life is the life found “IN CHRIST.” How have you seen that in your life? 3. Why do you think people try to find their identity in their own achievements or “name”? 4. What is your reaction to God “eulogizing” (honoring, speaking well of) you? 5. When you “cross that bridge” at the end of your life, what do you want God to say to you? (see Matthew 25)
Discussion Questions: 1. God knows all about you. Everything. So if there were a billboard that had a message from God to you written on it, what would it say? 2. What part of God’s character have you imitated poorly recently? 3. What difference does it make knowing that you are loved by the one who asks something of you? (as in God asking you to obey him as his “dearly loved children”) 4. Share your reaction to hearing that your life is a “pleasing aroma” and “sweet scent rising to God”. (2 Corinthians 2:15)

Discussion Questions: 1. If you were to list “characteristics” of someone who is a Christian, what would be on your list? 2. Which of these characteristics are you struggling with?...growing in? a.says what is true b.manages what he feels c. gives what he’s earned d. watches what he says e. forgives as he’s been forgiven 3. Consider and discuss this statement from Pastor Dave’s message: “These characteristics are NOT THE ESSENCE of your IDENTITY; they are the EXPRESSIONS of your identity.” 4. What then is the essence of one’s Christian identity? 5. Reflect on these words from Philippians 3:9 and turn them back to God in prayer: “And being found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God”
Discussion Questions: 1. What’s one thing from the message that you’d like to remember in a week from now? 2. Think of your story. Do you remember life on the “old” path? How is life different for you now? 3. Speaking of calluses…Is there a callus on your soul? A place where prolonged pressure over time has created a dead spot in your soul? A place where you used to have more feeling? Confess this to the Lord and ask him to forgive you. Then read 1 John 1:8-9. 4. Commit to walking the new path of “righteousness” and “holiness”. Ask the Lord to guide you down this path.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. So, as Nathanael asked, "What kind of world do you want to live in?" 2. What is your experience with foreign missions? Praying? Giving? Going? other? 3. What's one way in which this message changed your thinking about missions? 4. To whom is God sending you that they might be "full of the knowledge of the Lord?"
