1 - Hey there , this is Davi from English, eh? and you are more than welcome here. Now, we’ll be looking at the Simple Past in German. Los geht’s!
Usually in german we use the verb “haben” which means to have to conjugate the verbs in the past and most verbs in the past are conjugated in the participle just like in the verbs: sehen / gesehen – sehen is the original verb and "gesehen" the past participle. So, it’s very much common to see this prefix “ge” in the beginning of the verbs in the past”. As I mentioned in the previous podcast the present perfect in German is very much equivalent to the simple past in English. Now let’s get busy learning:
Die Möbel – The Furniture
Die Komode – The commode
Ich sehe die Kommode – I see the Commode
Ich habe die Kommode gesehen. – I saw the Commode.
Ich putze das Bücherregal – I clean the book shelf
Ich habe das Bücherregal geputzt – I cleaned the book shelf.
Ich kaufe den Schrank – I buy a wardrobe.
Ich habe den Schrank gekauft. – I bought a wardrobe.
Ich sehe das Bett – I see the bed
Ich habe das Bett gesehen. – I saw the bed.
Ich organisiere den Schreibtisch – I organize the desk.
Ich habe den Schreibtisch organisiert. I organized the desk.
(in this case we didn’t use the prefix “ge” because “organisieren” derives from latin, and most foreign words are conjugated differently.
Ich setze mich auf den Sessel - I sit on the chair
Ich habe mich auf den Sessel gesetzt. – I sat on the chair
Ich habe ein Sofa – I have a sofa.
Ich habe ein Sofa gehabt – I had a sofa.
Ich kaufe einen Stuhl – I buy a stuhl (a chair)
I habe einen Stuhl gekauft – I bought a stuhl (a chair)
Ich lege den Teller auf den Tisch – I lay the plate on the table
Ich habe den Teller auf den Tisch gelegt – I laid the plate on the table.
Ich kaufe keinen Teppich – I don’t buy any rug
Ich habe keinen Teppich gekauft – I didn’t buy any rug.

Das Auge / Die Augen – the eye/ the eyes
Die Nase – the nose
Der Mund – the mouth

Der Fuss – the foot
Die Füsse – the feet
Die Hand – the hand

Now, listen to the following sentences:
Ich hebemeine Hand auf! I lift up my hand.
In German we have something called Trennbare Verben “separable verbs”, which means the prefix tends to appear at the end of the sentence. Just like in aufheben – to lift up (Ich hebe auf – I lift up).
Ich habe meinen Fuss verletzt! (verletzen – to hurt – Ich habe (I have) meinen Fuss (my foot) – verletzt (hurt) I hurt my foot. Here we have a case of present perfect, in German we use more often the present perfect than the simple past. The simple past in German is more used when we wanna tell stories or in formal conversations. We’ll have the entire next episode to explain this, for now just focus on understanding the sentences.
Sie hat den Arm verstaucht. (Sie hat (she has) – den Arm (the arm) verstaucht (sprained). She’s sprainned the arm.
Wir brauchen einen Gehstock zu gehen. We need a walking stick to walk.
Now learn how to say that you’re sick in German as well as some diseases one may have
Mein Gott, ich bin Krank! My God, I’m sick.
Ich bin krankgeschrieben. I’m on sick leave.
Ich habe Kopfschmerzen! I have headache.
Mir geht’s nicht gut. – I’m not doing well.
Du hast eine Erkältung. – You have a cold.
Mir läuft die Nase. – I’ve got a runny nose.
Ich brauche ein Taschentuch. – I need a handkerchief.
Ich habe Husten. – I have a cough.
Ich habe Halsschmerzen. – I have a sore throat.
Er fühlt sich schlecht – He’s feeling bad.

1 - Hey there , welcome to another German podcast by English, eh? And today we’ll be introducing to you the modal verb “werden” which is the equivalent to the modal verb “will” or “going to” or to the continuous tense, which we will only discuss in the future.
Unlike English, in German we don’t have will or going to, both can be expressed in the veb “werden”, when you use ‘’werden’’ make sure to put the infinitive verb at the end of the sentence, as follows:
Ich werde Wasser trinken – I’ll drink water/ I’m gonna drink water
Du wirst heute zu house bleiben – You’ll stay at home today.
Er wird nicht heute arbeiten – He won’t work today.
Sie wird mir ein Geschenk kaufen – She’ll buy me a gift
Es wird nicht mehr passieren – It won’t happen again.
Wir werden morgen meinen Geburstag zelebrieren – We’ll celebrate my birthday tomorrow
Ihr werdet nicht heute Abend kommen. – You guys wont come tonight.
Sie werden das nicht sagen – They won’t say this
Sie werden das Geld heute erhalten – You (formal) will receive the money today.
Now listen to this conversation between Peter and Viktor over the phone:
· Hallo Peter! Wo bist du?
· Hallo Viktor, Ich bin immer noch zu Hause.
· Also, ich möchte von dir wissen ob du heute Nacht mit mir kommen willst.
· Ich kann leider nicht, weil ich viel zu tun habe.

Hey there , welcome to another German podcast by English, eh?, today we’ll be talking about things we like to do as well as learning to express feelings in German So let’s get into this.
Was machst du in deiner Freizeit? – What do you do in your free time?
• Ich spiele Volleyball – I play volleyball.
• Ich singe gerne – I like singing.
• Ich treffe mich gerne mit meinen Freunden – I like to meet my friends.
• Ich reise gerne – I like travelling
• Ich schaue mir gerne Filme an – I like watching movies
• Ich renne gerne – I like running.
• Ich höre gerne Musik – I like listening to music
Dativ – In German we have something called Dativ, it is another declination, so to speak. Which means the articles, adjectives and nouns may change depending on the verbs or prepositions we are using in the sentence and also the actual action being applied, well it is complicated but I promise it will be clearer overtime, don’t worry, declinations don’t mean that they won’t let you sleep. When we use dativ Der becomes Dem, Das becomes Dem as well, Die becomes Der and Die plural becomes “Den”. Crazy eh? Let’s look at some examples:
Die Frau – The the woman (here you notice the article “Die” but if you are using the preposition “Mit” which is equivalent to “with” you have a case of Dativ.
Ex: Ich spreche Deutsch – I speak German.
Ich spreche Deutsch mit der Frau – I speak German with the woman. (Notice we changed from die Frau to Der Frau).
(Der Mann – the man)
• Ich reise gerne mit dem Mann. – I like travelling with the man.
(Das Kind – the child)
• Ich singe gerne mit dem Kind. I like singing with the child.
(Die Kinder - children)
Ich singe gerne mit den Kindern. – I like singing with the children. (Notice here we changed from Die Kinder to Die Kindern)
Dativ is not only this, we have other cases where Dativ can ble applied.
Now, let’s talk about feelings:
Gefühle - Feelings
• Ich bin durstig. Kann ich Wasser haben ? I’m thirsty, can I have water?
• Ich bin hungrig. Kann ich was essen ? I’m hungry, can I eat anything?
• Ich bin traurig! – I’m sad
• Ich bin froh! – I’m happy
• Mir ist kalt. – I’m feeling cold
• Mir ist warm. – I’m feeling warm
• Ich bin müde, Ich muss bald schlafen gehen. I’m tired, I should go to bed soon.

Wohin gehst du ? Where are you going to?
• Die Kirche – The church
• Der Supermarkt – The supermarket/ grocery store
• Das Krankenhaus – The hospital
• Das Ratthaus – The city hall
• Die Bank – The bank
• Der Park – The park
• Die Uni – The university
In German, when you wanna say that you are going to certain places you can use the preposition “zu” before the actual noun, but be careful, “zu” always requires dativ, therefore if the artikel begins with “der” or “das” you should say zu dem or zum, if the artikel is feminine “die” you say “zu der” or “zur” and if the noun is plural regarless the gender you always say “zu den”.
• Ich gehe zum Park. I go to the park.
• Ich gehe zur Schule . I go to school.
• Ich gehe zur Bank. I go to bank.
• Ich gehe zum Ratthaus. I go to the city hall.
• Ich gehe zu den Parks. I go to the parks.
Restaurant vocabulary:
Hallo guten Morgen! Ich hätte gerne die Speisekarte! – Hey good morning, I would like to have the menu.
- Ja, bitte, nur ein Moment! –Yes, sure, just a moment.
Was kostet es ? – How much is it?
- Es kostet 10 euro. It costs 10 euros.
Was isst du ? What do you eat?
• Das Brot – Ich esse das Brot - I eat the Bread.
• Das Fleish - Ich esse nicht fleish. I don’t eat meat.
• Der Apfel – Ich esse den Apfel. I eat the apple
• Die Orange – I esse gern Orange. I like to eat orange
• Die Banane – Ich esse die Banane. I eat the banana.
• Die Traube - Ich esse nicht die Trauben. – I don’t eat the grapes.
• Das Gemüse – Ich esse nicht Gemüse – I don’t eat vegetables.
• Das Eis – Ich esse gern Eis – I like to eat Ice cream.
Notice that here we changed the artikel der in the word Apfel to den Apfel. This is a case of Akkusativ.
The German accusative is used for the direct object of a sentence. The direct object is a person, animal or thing the action of the sentence is happening to, or being acted upon. The articles Das and Die remain the same however der becomes den. Don’t worry too much about this now, we’ll see this many times during this course.
Now listen to the sentences again, now only in German.
