This is the account for Achona Online, the digital newspaper of the Academy of the Holy Names. Our podcast "Achona: Beyond the Articles" aims to discuss a variety of topics, such as living a healthy lifestyle and U.S. politics. Our staff writers converse with faculty and students at the Academy and voice their opinions on current events.

Although his sentencing is not for another few weeks, this case of police brutality could serve as a precedent for future cases of police violence; in the past, due to qualified immunity, police officers have rarely been held accountable for misconduct. The staff writers discussed the aftermath of last summer’s protests, the future of racial justice, and what they hope happens going forward with police reform. The end of this podcast also features the anonymous voice recordings of several members of the Academy student body who shared their thoughts on Derek Chauvin’s verdict.

The interview between Oprah and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle aired on CBS on Sunday, Mar. 7, at 8 p.m. eastern time. Oprah commenced the interview by stating that “There’s no subject that’s off limits,” in addition to making it clear to the audience that they were not paid for the interview. This comes after Harry and Meghan’s decision to step down as senior royals — which they announced on Jan. 8, 2020. However, as the interview revealed, the couple did not want it to end that way, yet the perpetuation of untrue, racist stories published by British Tabloids and a lack of support from place officials and their own family members, they felt the decision was a necessary step in order to protect their family and become a truly happy family.
Subsequently, members of the Achona staff — Editor-in-Chief Adriana James-Rodi, Managing Editor Emara Sáez, Multimedia Editor Chloe Mintz, Senior Staff Writer Olivia Martinez, and Sophomore Staff Writers Gigi Alfonso, Isabel Bequer, and Raquelle Elson discussed some of the important revelations from the interview, as well as gave their own thoughts regarding the British monarchy in this episode of "Achona: Beyond the Articles."

There are a lot of musical groups out there that are made up of boys, but by definition, not all of these are boy bands. In late April, a racist video on the popular social media app TikTok went viral as it shows two Georgia teenagers being racist towards the African American community by stating the "n" word and other degrading and derogatory stereotypes. This is only one of several instances in which people have used social media platforms to slander groups of people for the purpose of promoting hate, getting likes and views, or both. Multimedia Editor Adriana James-Rodil interviews Contributing Junior Staff Writer Amelia Cuttle and Sophomore Anna Reins, and they discuss the importance of thinking before posting anything on the internet because once it's there, it's there forever.

Similar medical crises have occurred, most recently the 1918 Pandemic Influenza (Flu) and the SARS Outbreak in 2003, but younger generations have not experienced such a universal, yet isolating and fear-invoking event — until now. Nonetheless, this pandemic strikes at a time when various forms of technology are in homes across the world which allow people to stay connected. Regardless, however, lives have been lost and traditions such as senior skip day, running of the halls, and even graduation will not be experienced. Although a universal and even uniting experience, it will, nevertheless, be remembered differently by every individual. So, the question to ask yourself is: how will you remember COVID-19?

Recently, the issue surrounding celebrities and politics has been in the spotlight; celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift, and Beyoncé have been voicing their political opinions through various mediums. Whether it be on social media or on an award show stage, several celebrities have voiced their opinions on various issues ranging from women's rights to the current administration's border policy. Many have criticized these artists for bringing controversial issues into mainstream media. Often times, many feel that celebrities should leave it up to politicians to discuss these issues rather than mention them during “inappropriate” times. Some people feel that celebrities are not educated or qualified enough to discuss controversial issues in the public eye. On the other hand, others feel that celebrities are responsible enough to use their platforms to bring attention to worthwhile causes. About 1 in 5 teenagers in the United States suffer from a mental disorder severe enough to impact their daily activities. Vaping in today’s society has become more and more prevalent. It has become popular over the last few years because it was believed to be safer than smoking cigarettes. However, recent news has contradicted that belief. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 450 possible cases of severe lung injury and six deaths related to vaping and e-cigarette use. Teens and young adults are among the most affected by vaping and e-cigarette use. According to the New York Times, around 2.5 million high school students reported that they had vaped in 2017. So, why are teens choosing to vape?
