Conflict. It’s the biggest theme in 2020 and it’s destructive nature (if left unaddressed) is what tears relationships apart. Believe it or not, many people don’t know how to navigate conflict. They lack the ability to see their emotions, step back, re-group, and proceed with thoughtful productive conversation. Conflict is such an emotionally driven beast, that often people succumb to their desire to fight and engage in some form of defense. Conversely, there are those who were raised like be to believe in submitting to conflict and never standing up for themselves.

My guest Ben Gallaher is the Co-founder of B+A, the world's fastest and most creative management consultancy. We spend time talking about dealing with fear based conflict and how to resolve it. Ben joins us from England, and you can learn more about him and his company at https://bandaequals.com/. In this episode you’ll also hear about the Honor Foundation from CEO Matt Stevens. This month on the show, we are honoring our military, as May 16th is Armed Services Day, by providing you with information and some amazing guests on how you can support your veteran workforce, active duty spouses, and much more. This is a subject that is near and dear to my heart and the ability to support your efforts in optimizing your veteran workforce talents and skills that they bring to the table.

In this episode we have the opportunity to speak to Matt Stevens, CEO of The Honor Foundation. Matt was a graduate in the first cohort when the Virginia Beach campus opened in the spring of 2016, where I was one of the original five coaches. Matt is a retired 26 year Navy SEAL Captain who is now leading the The Honor Foundation which provides Special Forces Operators and support staff structured career transition support.

Our veterans have given so much of themselves – deploying away from family and loved ones for extended periods of time, dealing with loss of life, dealing with the process of returning to a non-war zone post deployment, as well as operating in the most highly autocratic environment in the US. With that come challenges and opportunities that is not stereotypical of all veterans. I have seen and had to manage firsthand conflicts between varying beliefs, culture, religion, and behaviors of which are not representative of all veterans…but it can happen, and it has…and you will be forced to deal with it, just as you would a non-veteran employee. If you are a listener who is committed to supporting a veteran workforce, this episode will provide you with helpful information to navigate how to meet their needs as well as dealing with some sensitive subject matter.

Inez Barberio is a powerhouse when it comes to emotional intelligence, as well as diversity and inclusion. We talk about some hard-hitting subjects and examples of how employers need to apply emotional intelligence when working with our veteran workforce and build them up as they enter or progress through their second career.

Currently retired, he’s agreed and l’m so grateful he did.

The market is a scary place…but it’s also a great place for opportunity. Your employees have an opportunity to take advantage of a down market to make changes to their investment, if they are in a position to do so. Regardless, this is an opportunity to help educate your employees as well as possibly make changes in plan investments to provide a greater rate of return.

Today’s show is exactly about that. My guest David Stephens is a financial investor and small business owner, who like many people are feeling the impact of the coronavirus impact. He provides some valuable insight for HR professionals and employers on the current market conditions as well as an optimistic view of where we will be once this lockdown has passed.

What if I gave you a behind the scenes look at how bills are put through into law from a man who served with the 115thCongress from 2017 to 2910?

Well, in this episode, that’s exactly what I’m going to do!

In this episode, I’m giving you food for thought as to how HR professionals address and respond to changes in employment law, as well as a peek into the current Congress deliberations on pending law.

An example of a Bill that has been introduced is highlighted below.

S.3256 - Schedules That Work Act To permit employees to request changes to their work schedules without fear of retaliation and to ensure that employers consider these requests, and to require employers to provide more predictable and stable schedules for employees in certain occupations with evidence of unpredictable and unstable scheduling practices that negatively affect employees, and for other purposes.

My interview with The Honorable Scott Taylor brings real-world legislative experience to the conversation, and provides listeners with a closer look and understanding of how laws are created in the United States.

I also provide a PSA to employers that effective May 1, 2020 employers must use the new I-9 Form and you can read about it by clicking here.

Today’s Q & A is from an online question I received

What if I gave you a behind the scenes look at everything that goes into terminating a CEO?

Well, in this episode, that’s exactly what I’m going to do!

In this episode, I’m giving you a little sneak peek of what the Board of Directors must consider when terminating a CEO with or without cause, why reviewing the employment agreement is critical, how they come up with crazy big severance packages, and how you tell your employees you just sacked the CEO.

It’s a straight forward rundown of the complex separation process between the company and the CEO, as well as looking at some notable terminations in 2019.

Today’s Q & A is from a member in our Next Gen Women in HR Facebook Group and is based on an article I posted on LinkedIn last week. The article discussed the recently enacted New Jersey law, which is first of its kind in the nation, requiring employers to guarantee severance pay after mass layoffs (click here to read it yourself).
