"Remembering Brother Esutosin Omowale Osunkoya (aka Charles Brunson) of Sacramento, he started the Black Panther Party (BPP) chapter in Sacramento in 1968. Sending positive energy & much love to Margo and family. Ashe!! Ashe!!" -Faye Wilson Kennedy
Omowale was an amazing person always full of life and ready to dance or drum. To think he would pass from Covid-19 is heart breaking. http://sacobserver.com/2020/04/virus-claims-life-of-local-black-panther-party-founder/?fbclid=IwAR2PfB97ZZABGGABtt7lXQ-JhySsJ-UOow8rXaSEHqgDd4HyXY56EN7XFxk
I was lucky enough to run sound during a Black Panther panel at The Brickhouse Art Gallery in Sacramento California part of an exhibit called "SAC PANTHERS 48 ART EXHIBITION" by Milton Bowens. So I thought I should record some of the discussion on a whim, I never did anything with the recording until now. This is the raw cut of the audio no edits. Enjoy.

Stop #1 on the Poet City Book Release Tour: Luna's Cafe
Luna's Cafe 1414 16th St, Sacramento, California 95814
Four years ago, I put together a book called Open Mic Sketchbook published by little m press. At that time, I only hosted at Mahogany Urban Poetry Series every third Wednesday but two years ago I agreed to host Joe Montoya’s Poetry Unplugged every fourth Thursday at Luna’s Cafe. Open Mic Sketchbook was based on my time hosting at Mahogany but now that I’m hosting at two locations I thought of making Open Mic Sketchbook broader. Poet City is that concept.

August 12, 2017 9AM - 3PM 4610 X St, Sacramento, CA
The 2nd Annual Sacramento Black Women’s Health & Wellness Conference (SBWHWC) will commence on Saturday, August 12, 2017 from 9am – 3pm at the University of California, Davis-Education Building, [address: 4610 X Street, Sacramento, CA 95817]. Our motto is “A Healthier You! A Healthier Me! A Healthier We!” The purpose of this conference is to focus on reducing health disparities that disproportionately affect Black women by raising awareness about mental and physical health. The conference will educate attendees about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Last year’s conference was an enormous success! There were 125 women in attendance. Each woman was provided the space to engage with one another, as well as community health services. They were provided with amazing resources from our vendors and inspired by a keynote address from Alondra Thompson. Participants were also extremely engaged in our interactive health workshops and learned about the importance of prioritizing their mental health. The feedback was overwhelming and we look forward to providing that same positive energy to this year’s SBWHWC!
This year’s conference will be titled “Healing Invisible Scars” and we will focus on overcoming trauma, relationship dynamics, cardiovascular disease prevention, and overall the mental, spiritual, and physical protection of your heart. We aim to address these specific health disparities and engage a community to reach towards prevention. The SBWHWC will provide attendees with a dynamic keynote speaker, a thought provoking panel discussion, informative workshops, an energizing physical activity to promote heart health, and a nutritious breakfast & lunch.

Black Talk Sacramento #23 Seg 3: Painted Rock Day Interview with Ayanna Fabio and Daphne Burgess by NSAA 360
Chanowk Yisrael, Founder of The Yisrael Family Urban Farm, is an urban farmer, community activist and husband. Born and raised in Sacramento, he traveled across the country for 10 years on the dime of corporate America before deciding to trade in his frequent flyer miles for seeds and soil.
Chanowk terms what he does as “social entrepreneurship,” a lifestyle that sustains his family and aids his neighborhood in South Oak Park (a food dessert according to the USDA).
Chanowk’s story has been featured in several publications including The Sacramento Bee, Sacramento Press, Edible Sacramento and Sacramento News and Review.
Chanowk’s parents are both cancer survivors and doctors often informed him that many of these diseases are hereditary, but he believes that it is eating habits that are hereditary. These events prompted Chanowk to break the cycle of poor eating habits that typically plague the Black community and transition himself and his family to a plant based diet. It is here that The Yisrael Family Urban Farm was born.
The Yisrael Family Urban Farm is transforming the hood for good using urban agriculture as a tool to engage, employ and empower communities. This is done through primarily through agriculture education, cooking classes, and youth mentorship.

THIRD SATURDAY DIVA MARKET
One of the most important things Diva Market founders, Frankie Edwards Lee and Daphne Burgess , strive to achieve with the market is bringing attention to local and small businesses. While to some, this may not seem like such a huge deal, when given careful thought, this is a truly meaningful undertaking as it provides area consumers with the opportunity to keep more of their dollars circulating in the community in which they live.

On April 17 they announced in a local newspaper an ambitious plan to create “a movement looking towards the salvation of the Negro independent grocery stores, through cooperative buying and teaching the lesson and value of advertising.” National Negro Business League leaders promoted the grocers’ efforts as a national model for African American businessmen working in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

He received his Associates Degree in Commercial Art under the Army’s College Education Assistance Program (ACE). Milton continued his education in the Arts, attending both Austin Peay State University, TN and Fayetteville State University, NC while serving his tour of duty in the military. During this time, Miltons’ work was collected by two of the military’s most prestigious museums; The John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Museum, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and The Don F. Pratt Memorial Museum, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
After serving his tour of duty, Milton returned to the Bay Area and continued his education under the mentorship of fine artist, David Bradford, head of the Art department as well as an instructor at Laney College, Oakland, California. Inspired by great artists such as, Jean Michel Basquiat, Robert Rauschenberg, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence and Andy Warhol, Milton changed his focus from illustration to fine art, and has become not only a great artist in his own right but a very powerful public speaker and community activist. In the fight to keep ART a vital part of public education and a tool to help rebuild self-esteem in all youth Milton, has diligently and tirelessly created exhibitions that try to bring about a level of civility to a community in need of inspiration.
Although Milton has accomplished much in his brief art career, he still considers himself to be ever expanding in the quest for knowledge, technique and understanding of art and how it plays a role in the preservation of the African American culture.
Upcoming Events: "Race and Social Justice" A Fine Art Exhibition May 9th - June 6th This exhibition is aligned to support 10th grade Race and Social Justice U.S. History classes

Author Geri Spencer Hunger
There are authors who can develop good plots and there are authors who create great characters; Geri Spencer Hunter is that rare author who can blend the two skills to draft an extraordinary novel. The Summer of my Fifteenth Year is an extraordinary novel. Hunter peeks at the delicate underbelly of an ordinary family; she uncovers and skillfully exposes its secrets and lies. The intensely drawn members of the Netter family appear no more or less dysfunctional than any American family, yet the unexpected events of Etta=s fifteenth summer change the family forever. Geri Spencer Hunter's novel will earn a place with the great ones and long after reading about the Netter family, you will think about them.
