Join me and my special guest, Merle Saferstein, as we unpack an incredible journey through the past and, ultimately, into the future. Imagine documenting your life's journey, the ups, the downs, the lessons learned, and then transforming that narrative into a treasure-trove for generations to come. That's exactly what Merle did. With an astounding collection of personal journals dating back to 1974, she redefined the art of journaling by inventing the concept of legacy journaling.
Our conversation delves deep into the purpose of legacy journaling and the impact it has on individuals who have experienced profound life events. From surviving the Holocaust to battling cancer, Merle's work involves helping these individuals express their stories and lessons in an ethical will, a spiritual document that comprises values, beliefs, hopes, and dreams. The process provides clarity and purpose, reinforcing the idea that they matter and that their lives have made a difference. So buckle up and get ready for a soul-stirring journey that challenges us to examine our lives and the legacies we leave behind.
This is where you will find my gift to you!

What happens when you mix a new mom, a cancer survivor, and a safe food advocate? You get a potpourri of invaluable insights, and that's exactly what we bring you today as we host Madeline Klevin, MPH, Safe and Healthy Food Program Coordinator with FACT. Madeline shares her journey with cancer and how it shaped her view of food safety. Imagine a world where you are conscious of every morsel you eat, every pill you pop - That's Madeline's world, and she invites us into it, talking about the need for moderation in antibiotic usage and the implications of misuse, particularly on the vulnerable among us.
In the second part of our chat, we navigate the frightening terrain of antibiotic overuse and its consequences. Madeline draws from her experience and challenges us to shift our focus towards local and sustainable food systems. Is the FDA doing enough? Are organizations such as the Food Animal Concerns Trust making headway in curbing antibiotic resistance? We wrestle with these questions and more. We also explore the actions we, as individuals, can take in supporting a more sustainable food system. And guess what? There's a special treat waiting in the show notes! Listen in and equip yourself with the knowledge to stay healthy and promote sustainability. The journey to safe food consumption starts here!

Imagine embarking on a journey that not only helps you understand the unmet needs in cancer care, but also empowers you to play a more proactive role in your treatment. In today's podcast I share a conversation with Dr. Mullangi from Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and a panel of physicians from Southwestern Medical Center and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. They reveal the often overlooked aspects of cancer treatment from detection to diagnosis. I talk about a spotlight on the patient journey, clinical presentation and the broad spectrum of unmet needs in oncology. I add my views on emphasizing the importance of patients taking the reins of their care, asking pertinent questions and seeking psychological, social and spiritual support during diagnosis and treatment.
Picture yourself in the midst of a candid discussion that not only speaks to your medical concerns, but also your human spirit. The second part the episode takes a transformative turn, touching upon the silver linings that emerge during challenging times. I delve into the significance of sharing our stories and experiences, the power of mutual upliftment, and the role of hope and dreams in our journey. I highlight the untapped potential of research to answer our most pressing questions about cancer care. This is a conversation that encourages you to be vulnerable yet resilient, to connect with others, and to draw strength amidst adversity. Whether you find support in an online community, a kind word from a stranger, or a quiet moment in the lap of nature, we invite you to join us in this enlightening discussion that empowers you to face your journey head-on, anchored in hope and knowledge.

Jane Healy's Good Night from Paris introduces the remarkable story of Drue (Leyton) Tartiere, who lived a lavish life in Hollywood before discovering her true love. In 1938, she relocated to Paris with him, at the dawn of WWII coming.
Drue sought ways to serve her adopted country during these trying times, and turned to radio broadcasting to inform the American audience of what was happening. She brought the reality of the war home to Americans, but this also caught the attention of the Nazi Party who saw her as a threat.
Healy's impressive research brings to life a captivating account of the courageous tale of a remarkable but often overlooked woman who impacted history in profound ways.

You Were Designed for Greatness with Donna Tashjian
Are you living a life of greatness? Or are you living a life of average? Most people go through life without ever discovering their greatness or living a life of their dreams. The good news is that you were designed for greatness! You have everything you need inside of you to be successful and fulfilled. You just need to learn how to use it.
What does it mean to be designed for greatness? In her podcast, "You Were Designed for Greatness," Donna Tashjian suggests that greatness is something that can be designed. She shares that changing the life of one woman can create change for a family and even a community.
There are many characteristics of someone who is designed for greatness, but some of the most important are a strong work ethic, a focus on personal growth, and a positive attitude. A great person never gives up, always strives to improve, and is always looking for ways to make a positive impact in the world. A person is also willing to look at their own life and decide that they want to change
There are a number of challenges you may face as you pursue greatness. The first is that you will need to develop a strong sense of self-awareness and self-confidence. You must be able to know and believe in yourself, your abilities, and your worth. You must also be willing to work hard and persevere through setbacks and adversity.
There are many ways that you can overcome the challenges that you face in your life. Here are a few suggestions:
Talk to someone about what you are going through. It can be really helpful to talk to someone who will understand and can offer helpful advice.
Reach out to your friends and family for support. They may not be able to solve all your problems, but they can offer emotional support and a listening ear.
Seek professional help if the challenges you are facing are too difficult to handle on your own. A therapist or counselor can help you work through your problems and find solutions.

Business leadership: Leveraging What You Have to Develop Leadership Skills and Style to be an Effective LeaderKnowing the importance of business leadership is the first step to understanding effective business leadership. Even though having a great business is a goal for many individuals, developing the needed qualities can be complex. Many books offer motivational tips for successful leaders, methods to delegate tasks, and how to take decisive actions. However, there is one skill that Karen Ferrell-Rhodes, CEO of Shockingly Different Leadership and member of the Forbes Council, believes is very important- leadership differentiation. This is the ability to champion the most promising initiatives to remain competitive. A leader creates an environment that encourages employees to bolster the company culture and, thereby, the company's success.
If you're interested in learning more about this, then learning about Karan Ferrell-Rhodes will benefit you.
"However, it pains me when organizations lack the knowledge, resources, or bandwidth to effectively support the very people accountable for their bottom-line"

Guilt: "Does not mean that you are doing something wrong. It means that you are doing something that is new to you."
I am paraphrasing Dr. Melissa Reilly after our conversation about feeling isolated, insecure when being a mom without a mom. We can be mom-less due to location, estrangement or even the loss of our mother. Melissa shared that she felt the loss of her own mother more profoundly when she became a mom herself.
She realized that we need the built-in community of moms, the Wise Woman, the Emotional Support, the Go-Getter, and the Late-Night Talker.
Having a community of people becomes very important. Learn more about how to connect with Melissa and other moms without moms...

Another skincare product? What's the catch? How much does it cost?
Those are the type of questions we are used to asking after hearing about a new line of acne treatment. But what about other kinds of questions to examine our skincare routine?
What is the science behind it? How can this product help calm and soothe my skin while boosting my self-esteem?
These are the type of questions Dr. Yug Varma asked during his post-doctoral research at the University of California at San Francisco. I had the opportunity to hear more about his story, his leap of faith, and trusting his gut instincts to create change for others on my podcast, In the Rising.Interested in trying out the skin care line looking deeper than your complexion, but into your health.

We've all been there: we're juggling too many tasks, we're exhausted, and we feel highly stressed. This stress is causing us to be unhealthy, and being unhealthy is only making us more stressed. It's a never-ending cycle.
According to this Forbes article, half of the women they interviewed felt burned out by all the tasks they were juggling between home and work. They also felt exhausted and highly stressed.
WebMD has an entire page dedicated the to symptoms of stress such as headache, fatigue, stomach issues, frequent colds, and chest pain.
At some point, the stress causes us to be unhealthy and being unhealthy makes us more vulnerable to being stressed.
After my second full burn out episode, I decided to make a change in my life. Actually, one small change at a time.
Because of my own experience, I was really excited to speak to my special guest today is Maja Miller, who has been the woman who has been successful in all the ways believe success should look like. Yet, she realized that the price she was paying was harming her physically.

Love Your Amazing Self!
Truth!
In this season of gift-giving, thanksgiving and joy, it is also important to remember that we should give thanks to the one person that we tend to forget. Ourselves!
Learning to appreciate what you have right now (gratitude) and appreciate yourself (self-love) are skills that many of us have to put effort in.
Ofusu Jones-Quartey, a meditation teacher and hip-hop musician, write gentle poetic reminders of self-love in his new book, "Love Your Amazing Self: Joyful Verses for Young Voices." The book is beautifully illustrated by Ndubisi Okoye and each page invites the eyes to read heartfelt words that make you stop and realize that time and each experience is precious.
Ofosu is also known as the recording artist - Born I - and has been teaching mindfulness and meditation for greater than 10 years. He uses these practices and his beliefs to meld them into hip-hop and electronic music.
In Ofusu's words:
"The world has its ideas of who you are
But you don't need them
To be the person you really are inside
is Freedom"

These women have suffered psychological abuse at the hands of their former partners and are working to ensure their children are protected from further cruelty. Her company is called Best Foot Forward, has been around for several years.
Reneé has been a coach for years and has a degree in Psychology. She was coached in her custody struggles and decided to help others in similar situations.
Reneé has formed a blueprint for preparing for court through Strategy, Mindset, and Evidence and using truth and virtue even in the face of lies and manipulation. I find that moms are dependent on their lawyers to save them, and they have no real sense of how best to present their evidence in court. What sets Renee apart is her focus on the mindset of dealing with a high-conflict co-parent--both in a custody battle AND as a mom trying to co-parent with a damaged individual. She addresses the shame, guilt, and helplessness through her Custody Warriors program.

Aunia Kahn's work in trauma and mental health has grown over the years and has created a launching pad for the Healing Art Creatively Program. Art and trauma-related work first came together as a passion and purpose with her career’s first exhibition Voices Within Surviving Through the Arts (St. Louis Artist Guild 2005) where her art took on subjects of abuse and trauma and was awarded for her endeavors.
Later, she was invited for consecutive years as a panelist for the Washington University School of Medicine’s MOHOP (Mental Health Outreach Program) and has regularly been a guest lecturer at Southwestern Illinois College speaking abuse, trauma and medical trauma. Are you even a writer?
I have asked this question so many times… as has (probably) every writer.
Paulette Perhach's life started with financial disaster and the accidental death of her father when she was 17, she started started out with a victim mentality.
Paulette admits to feeling entitled and waited for success to come to her. It wasn't until she had an experience through the Peace Corps that she learned she had to take responsibility for her own success. She discovered the miracle of self-education during her service in Paraguay.
She bought a horse and simply Googled: "How to ride horse." Two weeks later, she was galloping.
She's gone on to become an adult-education evangelist, starting a corporate university at a $50M company, creating writing courses, and authoring the book Welcome to the Writer’s Life Book—a guide to turning freelance writing into a business.
She also wrote a globally viral article that helped millions of women realize the importance of financial power, calledA Story of a F-Off Fund.
She is now a successful writer and writing coach, with work in The New York Times, Vox, Cosmo, Glamour, and many more.

“You need a mentor!”
Perhaps you have heard these words somewhere along your career path as well. But, what makes a good mentor?
Most people would describe a mentor as someone who “has been there and done that,” and now is sharing their knowledge and experience. Basically a mentor is a trusted advisor or leader.
But, so what exactly?
Doug Lawrence, creator of TalentC has taken that “so what” and created an entire program and two books as an answer to this question.
Doug started his professional career as part of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and worked in this field for 25 years. He described giving advice and insight to younger members of the force, and then realized that this was something he had a talent for. He sought out mentor programs, and realized that many programs focused on teaching the “knowledge and how to” of mentoring, but did not focus on making the mentor “truly competent.”
His passion for mentoring allowed him to become an International Certified Mentor, and has obtained his Certificate of Achievement – Mentoring, his Certificate of Competence – Mentor and his Certificate of Competence – Journey Mentor from the International Mentoring Community (IMC)
“A good mentor is going to leverage their lived experience… through story-telling.”
Doug also uses his experience to speak to organizations. He is part of the Canadian Speaker Bureau. He is Doug is a volunteer mentor with the Sir Richard Branson Entrepreneur Program in the Caribbean.
Sir Richard Branson is quoted as saying, ” The best way forward is to give more people everywhere greater power to build their own destinies.” Doug Lawrence embodies this with is mentor program, as well as part of his role as an author.
Books
Doug Lawrence has authored two books. His first book, The Gift of Mentoring. Dough describes the two-way relationship that a mentor and mentee have, as well as the chemistry that has to exist in order for the relationship to be fruitful.

April is National Poetry Month.
Why does this matter?
Well, in the way that music can change a feeling in someones heart and change their mood, poetry has the same ability.
Ne research shows that poetry is very powerful- not just in the words, but how it can stimulate the reward centers of the brain. This means that emotional expression can change.
It is why some of us will remember poetry years after memorizing it... in fact, it is what makes us memorize it in the first place.
My guest today is James Crews, an outstanding poet in his own right... and editor and collector of poems. His latest book The Path to Kindness reveals the Power of Poetry.
James shares the power of poetry in this collection, but allowing us the glimpse of kindness, while allowing ourselves to appreciate small and gentle gestures that represent love and memory.

Many people want to have fulfilling long-lasting relationships.
Many people get married each year.
Many people get divorced each year as well.
This is a sad fact, and yet, we continue to look for "the one."
But, what if "the one" would stay that way if we knew how to better behave and validate their feelings?
Matthew Fray is my guest today and he shares his insights as a person who has gone through divorce, become a relationship coach and author.
Two relationship-damaging habits “invisible” to many people are especially harmful because we often don’t notice them or the paper-cut wounds that build up because of them — our tendency to invalidate others’ emotional experiences when we disagree with them; and our frequent failure to consider a partner’s emotional wants and needs when making decisions due to thoughtlessness or forgetfulness.

Domestic Violence:
It's a devastating, but common issue.
In the U.S. - over 10 million adults experience domestic violence annually. 1 in 4 women and 1 and 10 men will experience it in their lifetime. On a typical day, domestic violence hotlines nationwide receive almost 20,000 calls. And Covid-19 has only exacerbated the problem.
In the new book - Paper Doll Lina - author ROBYN LUCAS - delivers an honest and deeply moving portrait of life as the victim of domestic abuse - something she experienced first-hand during her 19-year marriage. The book debuted on September 1, 2021, but the topic is timeless.

DOPAMINE NATION is a book about pleasure.
It’s also about pain.
Most importantly, it’s about the relationship between the two and how understanding that relationship is essential for a life well-lived.
Why?
Because the world has transformed from a place of scarcity to a place of overwhelming abundance: drugs, food, news, shopping, gambling, social media, and the list goes on and on.
Today, we’re all vulnerable to the problem of addiction. In Dopamine Nation, Anna Lembke, MD, shares the true stories of her patients falling prey to addiction and finding their way out again.
Dr. Lembke has decades of experience in clinical practice and neuroscientific research and in DOPAMINE NATION, readers will learn:
• The Internet promotes compulsive overconsumption not merely by providing increased access to drugs old and new, but also by suggesting behaviors that otherwise may never have occurred to us. Videos don’t just “go viral.” They’re literally contagious, hence the advent of the meme.
• Rates of addiction are rising the world over. The US is dominated by illicit drugs, Russia and Eastern Europe by alcohol addiction.
• When researchers asked the following question to people in thirty countries around the world – “During the past four weeks, how often have you had bodily aches or pain? Never; seldom; sometimes; often; or very often?” – they found that Americans reported more pain than any other country.
• Dopamine is not the only neurotransmitter involved in reward processing, but most neuroscientist agree it is among the most important. Dopamine may play a bigger role in the motivation to get a reward than the pleasure of the reward itself.
• Exercise increases many of the neurotransmitters involved in positive mood regulation: dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins. Exercise contributes to the birth of new neurons and even reduces the likelihood of using and getting addicted to drugs.

Not sure how to interact or have a relationship with someone who has ADHD and/or Bipolar Disorder? My guest today is Lisa Jones, who shares her story about navigating these waters as a parent and as a partner.
In her own words...
" All three of my kids have either a physical or mental condition that has and will need continued treatment. My eldest, my son, in addition to diabetes, has ADHD and Bipolar disorder. Navigating with him through the world of mental illness has been a life-altering experience for me. To see first-hand the stigma, fear and dearth of services bestowed upon him and others like him has been stunning.
As a result, affecting change, spreading knowledge and giving support has become my mission.
I am now serving on the Board of Directors of a large mental health not for profit in New Jersey, USA. I have met with politicians and influencers to affect mental health policy changes. I have started my own blog, mindingmentalillness.com, and I am joining podcasts to discuss the topic as well.
In addition, I have written an article on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), “The Restless Mind of ADHD” which has been published in the I Am Her magazine.
Also, I met a wonderful man a few years ago that ended up also struggling with bipolar disorder. My life has been surrounded by mental illness and I now consider myself their unsuspected champion.
In addition to my volunteering and advocacy work, I work full-time in the Pharmaceutical industry. I have earned a Masters Degree in Urban Policy Analysis and Management as well along the way. I am a very spiritual, empathic woman as well which probably helps guide and ground me in times of adversity.
I’m a person who learns and grows from adversity and I would like to share my methods with other like-minded people. I like inspiring and challenging people to be the very best they can be. I am teaching my daughters to be strong, independent women and I’m proud to say that they are great students as well as talented musicians. My son is also a talented percussionist. Most importantly, I teach all my kids to be givers. They have all volunteered their time to help others and organizations.

This is a term that pulls up images of pain, bruises, sadness. The thing is domestic violence is more than that. It can be emotional and psychological in nature, not just physical. When we feel safe at home, we can go out and realize that we can be safe in the world.

My eyes blink rapidly while the rest of my face goes blank, and my body just goes limp. Why?
I realize that I still have a minimum of 2-3 loads of laundry to do, meal prep to complete for a few days, so I can build more "time" into the next few days, and declutter nearly every room because I am the owner of single socks.
I can feel a slight chill all over my body, my ribs tightening and my mind going back in time when I truly thought that handling motherhood, a career, pets, utilities were things I could do easily.
But, with a small intake of breath, I realize that easy is not what I can describe this as. The reason: doing it all is just too much.
I need help, and if I can't get help, I need to give myself a break.
Motherhood is not for every woman, and I respect that. I knew I wanted to be a mom, but I didn't realize the amount of time a little growing human takes from your time...even when they are not around. Knowing that I am of my son, still makes my heart race with excitement of truth and possibility. I am divorced, and though I have a cooperative co-parenting situation, I still know that the house, the job, the yard, the pets, the car upkeep, the groceries, etc., are mine alone.
According to this Motherly article, over 90 % of mothers feel burnt out. What can change that?
Self-care, but also, recognizing that in no way, shape or form, was it always meant to be on the mom's shoulders-married or not. Asking for help, saying no, and accepting your own limitations with regard to time and energy is important.
The motherly article points out Brene Brown is the Call to Courage Netflix program... leaning into the discomfort, and going with it.

Are you friends with your hormones?
Did you ever feel that you needed to be?
As women, we are often called "hormonal" if we make certain comments, or if we are perceived as "having an attitude." Sometimes, we state to ourselves that we are feeling "hormonal."
What does this mean though? Hormones are the enemy that we contend with from puberty through adulthood. This is responsible for the red blotches and acne that creep up right before photoshoots, or "Aunt Flo" comes on the day you wear your nice new crisp white pants to the picnic.
What if we could stop our go-go-go lifestyle long enough to hear what our body is saying, and learn that these hormones are whispering to us. It is for us to hear them, and answer accordingly. With this, we can move forward with fewer mood swings, better weight control and a happier life.
I had the wonderful opportunity to interview Dr. Aviva Romm as she launches her latest book- Hormone Intelligence: Hormone Intelligence: The Complete Guide to Calming Hormone Chaos and Restoring Your Body's Natural Blueprint for Well-Being.

Motivation, Inspiration and Discipline
We say and hear the words: Motivation, Inspiration and Discipline. How are these words related, and what exactly do they mean to us, and how will this matter when starting a business, writing a book, or waking up at 5 am to exercise? I explore this in today’s podcast.
· Inspiration: Having an overall feel of excitement to complete a task or feel a certain way. This is an internal force that can express itself outward through action.
Example: Having a conversation with someone about what course they are taking to get an advanced degree, makes you think about what you are also capable of.
· Motivation: Having an affect on someone outside of yourself, by pulling them into action via your words or actions. This is an external force.
Example: Having a conversation with someone about what course they are taking, and they tell you that you can do this also. They provide a course outline, and ask you to join them because they know you can do it also.
· Discipline: Having orderly and prescribed behavior. This has more to do with action that either internal or external forces acting on someone.
Example: You have heard about this additional course and you decide to take it yourself. You make all the necessary phone calls, you examine your budget, arrange new time in your schedule, and complete the course 6 months later.
