In this podcast, I'm going to share the easiest method for less creative people to spark innovative ideas: Reverse Brainstorming. Here's how you can use this technique to stimulate creativity and generate innovative solutions:1️⃣ Prepare the Setup: Start by grabbing a sheet of paper and dividing it into three columns.2️⃣ List What NOT to Do: In the first column, instruct your team to brainstorm and write down all the things they should NOT do to solve the problem or address the challenge at hand. Encourage them to think of the worst possible ideas, no matter how absurd or unconventional.3️⃣ Identify Extreme Opposites: In the far-right column, ask your team to write the complete opposite of each idea they listed in the first column. These extreme opposites should be outrageous or absurd solutions that no one would seriously consider.4️⃣ Find a Middle Ground: Now, in the middle column, prompt your team to identify ideas that fall somewhere in between the extreme opposites. These ideas should be less radical but still incorporate elements of the absurd or unconventional. These middle-ground ideas often provide innovative and workable solutions.Reverse brainstorming leverages the natural tendency of many individuals to identify faults and problems. By initially focusing on what not to do and exploring extreme opposites, you encourage creative thinking and eventually arrive at innovative ideas that can help solve the problem effectively.Give reverse brainstorming a try in your team meetings or brainstorming sessions, and you may be surprised by the creative solutions it generates.Make sure you claim your free Innovation Checklist to create rapid innovation at minimal risk here: https://breakthroughinnovator.com/

Here's a question I've been getting a lot lately how do we create some feedback systems that enable us to refine the AI solutions that we're using while bolstering our innovative thinking that's behind how we use those AI tools?

The first thing that we can do is to create a dual-loop feedback system. I know it sounds a bit complex, but the first one is how can we look at the data around the algorithms that our AI is using. So refining and improving them. The second feedback system we want to have is to look at a qualitative system on how people think the AI is working and how they're responding and working with it.

The second way that we can do this is to use an idea exchange platform. Now, I'm not a huge fan of idea crowd platforms, because we tend to get a massive dump of all of these ideas, and they might not necessarily be well thought out. But if you give people a template that self assesses their ideas on potential new AI applications or new AI tools that they could be using, that becomes very, very useful.

So do that and you'll find it starts to help you get some great results.

And the third thing that we can do to create great feedback is to do some good old A B testing. So we do an A test, maybe with the innovative use of our thinking, and our creative problem solving, and the B test might be using AI platforms. And so when we do that, we can see which one's more effective, or maybe it's a blend of both of those.

I hope these three techniques are going to help you to look at ways that you can get better feedback mechanisms into incorporating AI in your organization. Thanks for watching. What's the easiest method for less creative people to spark innovative ideas?

Simply put is called reverse brainstorming. So do this activity. One, grab a sheet of paper and divide it into three columns. In the first column, get your people to write out all of the things they can't do to solve the problem that you're trying to deal with.

So let's say for example the challenge is losing clients and say, what are all the ways that we can lose clients? So you're trying to do all of the things you're not supposed to do, right? Sounds weird. Just go with it. Once you've done that, the second thing that you do is go to the far column on the right, and down there, you write the complete opposite, the crazy opposite to each thing you said you're not supposed to do.

So if one of the ways to lose clients is to harass them by calling them or texting them every five minutes, Then the complete opposite would be something like maybe it's to send them a box, just one box, once a year with a box of goodies that has that stuff in. I'm not sure what it might be.

And you just work down, down, down, and you keep going through the extreme opposites. And then the third step after that is to go, what's something in between? What's something that we could do that kind of leans towards this absurdity, this craziness? But enables us to solve the problem. Trust me, this technique works.

And it works because most of us, especially when we're uncreative, have what's called, I guess you'd call it a mismatching gene. We are good at finding faults and mistakes. So if you lead with that as a strength, tell me all the things why we can't do this and how we make sure it won't happen again.

Then you'll find you come up with the great crazy ideas. And in between there. Hope that works. It has worked for the clients that we've worked with for the last 20 years, reverse brainstorming.

Here's a simple question that a lot of consultants avoid. Why should we innovate?

First off, innovation accelerates growth. If you're continually producing new or improved products or services, it means you capture more market share.

Next, we've got market dominance. Innovators aren't followers, they're leaders, and they're ahead of the curve. When you've got products that are grabbing the attention of a willing market who want that next big best thing and a superior solution, you've got it sewn up.

Thirdly, innovation gives you efficiency and cost savings, whether it's through a process, whether it's through service, whether it's through product manufacturing, using innovation enables you to look at ways that will save you time, money, and resources.

And finally, we have increased demand. Customers are drawn to products that are exciting, new, cutting edge, and create better results that other people aren't getting. And when we do that, not only do we command a bigger market share, but we can also command higher prices, meaning higher profits.

In this video, we'll explore three effective ways to keep our innovative thinking active, even in the era of AI tools. Let's dive right in!⦿ First, let's talk about balancing automation with creativity. One effective strategy is to allocate dedicated time solely for creative tasks, separate from any automation. While this may seem like a bold move, it ensures that we maintain clarity regarding the creative insights and ideas we can generate independently of AI.⦿ Next, consider incorporating human-centered design principles. When implementing or selecting AI tools, always keep the end-users, the people, in mind. Ensure that the tools you choose are intuitive and user-friendly, making them a seamless and sensible addition to the human experience.⦿ Lastly, conduct regular skills reviews. Set aside time to review and nurture your creative thinking, innovative thinking, and problem-solving skills separately from your AI-related skills. This approach ensures that you continue to sharpen and preserve these essential human skills, which are invaluable for solving the world's complex problems.By following these three strategies, you can strike a harmonious balance between harnessing the power of AI and maintaining and strengthening your critical human skills.I hope you find these insights valuable. Is creativity a talent or is it a skill? Good question. And the answer is kind of, could be both. Well, let me explain.

Why is creativity a talent? Or a skill. Well, most people wrongly believe that you have to be born creative in order to be a creative genius. Not true. While there are some people that inherently have creative behaviors that have just naturally been there from a very early age, all of us had creative tendencies, creative thinking, and creative ideas and creative behaviors when we were children.

It's just that the creative geniuses or the people that we go, Ooh, she's really creative. They've kept up those behaviors and those behaviors are ones of. Abstracting themselves, looking at problems from different perspectives, daring to combine things that they haven't combined before, and looking from fresh perspectives to look at ways of solving problems.

That's pretty much it. The good news is every one of those skills, those behaviors can be learn, so it can be a skill-based tool. I remember myself. Uncreative I felt like, and then I had to revisit and relearn those behaviors I had when I was a kid and the creativity went through the roof. I hope that's been of value to you.

What is the last step in problem solving?

Well, I would say that it is solution implementation. Here's why. At the end of the day, we've got, we think we've come up with a solution, but if we don't know how to actually implement that solution, then we haven't effectively solved the problem. And I think there are four things that we can consider when it comes to solution implementation as part of problem solving.

Number one, you wanna think of what are the foreseeable obstacles? You know, those roadblocks that you can see that are probably likely to stop you from actually implementing this solution. Is it something to do with the money? Is it something to do with people? Is it something to do with the equipment and so on?

Get them really clear.

The second part is to have a contingency plan. If this doesn't work, what are we gonna do next? The clearer we are of having a, if this, then that plan, the easier it will be to implement the solution.

The third part is constructable. How do we make [00:01:00] it easier to construct or to implement this actual idea, making it clear about what things we'll need, who will need, how long it will take, and sort get that sorted. And you're almost there.

And the fourth part is outsourceable. Is it possible to get someone else to do this, to implement the solution in order to get things done? Could they do it cheaper, more effectively with higher quality, with less dramas? So there you go. Four ways that you can look at actually implementing your idea in order to solve a problem.

The last stage of problem solving.

I'm going to talk about something we often wonder: What distinguishes between a leader and a follower in terms of innovation?

First up, let's start with a leader.

So a leader is usually someone who has discovered an insight before anyone else, or at least they've been able to capitalize on that insight before Anyone else That might be a customer frustration, a need or desire. Or an emerging trend. So not only have they captured upon that, but they've also gone and built a solution that effectively solves that problem or capitalizes on that emerging trend.

A leader is also someone who is effectively validated that they can solve a problem that's worth solving. That is that there's an actual market where people are willing to pay for that solution.

And a leader also has managed to work out how to actually continually, consistently, and profitably execute or produce a solution or a product that solves that effective problem so that they're getting a great r o I. Now, let's compare that to the follower.

Now a follower in many ways when it comes to innovating, I prefer to call them usually a laggard. They're a little bit slower to catch upon the insight, and they look really hard at analyzing what the leaders might have been doing in innovation. But they might realize that maybe the leaders have dealt with these things, but they've dropped the ball with this particular issue.

And that might be that there's an unmet need. A desire or frustration that they then capitalize on in order to create an innovation. So a follow up provided they can see an unmet or, I , an insight that hasn't been taken up on can also innovate to capture a new market where the existing market feels like there's an unmet need, that still needs to be served.

So the question might be, should you be a leader or a follower? I would argue that you should be both a leader and also a continual innovator so that you actually can keep above all of the followers. So that is that once you create your product or your new service, you don't sit and forget, but you'd periodically look back and go, is there anything that we are missing?

Is there a frustration that we haven't dealt with in order to fill those gaps? So that you can actually totally block out any competitors ever taking any of your market share.

I hope that's been of value to you. Make sure you check out our website for more valuable insights.

What is creativity?

This is a question I get asked very often.

Three ways to think of creativity.

One, think of it like a mixing pot of all of your thoughts. Just imagine you are cooking something, throwing in a stack of different ingredients, mixing 'em differently to see what pops up. It's a mix of experiences, thoughts, and curiosity.

Number two, think of creativity, like connecting unlikely dots. You can almost imagine it's like building something with Lego pieces that you've never connected before and looking back and going, huh? Didn't think that would work, but that's kind of interesting.

The third thing about creativity is to embrace curiosity. Here's the thing, most people worry that they're not creative. Rather than worrying about being creative, think more about, am I being curious? The more curious are about how something is built, or why it's this or what it looks like and what could be combined, that's when you find that the creative juices just start to flow.

So remember, creativity isn't a puzzle to solve more. It's a puzzle to play with. If you can keep that mindset, your creativity will flourish. Thanks for watching.

Here is a question I get a lot. What are the skills necessary for becoming an innovation consultant?

Well, for over 20 years I've been doing just that. So here's a few things I think that you need to have. Number one is curiosity, and that is really the skill of being able to ask questions and to investigate why. Why does someone have a problem?

Why does someone have a need or a frustration, or why has this got an emerging trend that we could be capitalizing on? Or that behavior on its own enables us to generate great insights. The second thing that I think would be really good skill is ideation. The ability to generate ideas on demand, and that's by being able to look at possible alternatives and solutions and having a really.

Flexible mind. So the skill is around ideation, but the behavior is around flexibility and looking at alternatives. The third thing is around the ability to be rigorous around validating, and that is the skill to be able to look at. Proving whether something is gonna work and proving whether a market is willing to pay for a solution.

And the fourth most critical component around being an innovation consultant, the skill would be about knowing how to actually commercialize that idea and build it. So whether it's manufacturing it or getting it out there to the market, promoting it and selling it. And making sure that it's actually landing in the customer's hands and it's working, and then continuing to build on that, making it cheaper to produce, cheaper to get out the world in order to create a great return of investment.

I reckon here are the four key skills you need to have in order to become an innovation consultant.

And if you wanna find out ways that you can increase your skills as an innovator, don't forget to check out our website.

What does creativity mean to me? How do I define it and what ways have I been creative in my career?

Great question.

So let's start off with the first component, which is around defining creativity.

Creativity for me. Is about the ability to approach a problem and to generate ideas that people haven't considered before. It's about changing our level of thinking so that we see a problem differently, and we can also generate ideas that other people haven't considered to do. In some ways, it's about , joining dots that other people have never thought to consider in order to solve a problem or to create an idea.

And creativity to me means that it is a tool that can enable me to generate great ideas, to solve problems for the companies I consult with, for myself, for my own business, for my wife's company, and the so on. It's an incredibly valuable business tool, but also it can be an incredibly great. Artistic tool enable just to express yourself, whether it's in music or art or writing, and the sort.

In some of the ways I've experienced creativity in my own life, I mean, every day I try and bring in some creativity, whether it's about how I might approach a problem, how I might communicate to one of my clients, how I might think of playing with my children or my family, or ways that we can be more creative in our day-to-day activities.

Generally, my life wouldn't be what it is unless I applied creativity.

I hope that gives you some clues on how to be more creative. Don't forget to check out our website for more valuable insights.

I'm going to talk about something we often wonder: What are innovation consultant services and what probs do they solve? First up, let's look at products. So if your company's looking at inventing a ,or creating a new product, that's where an innovation consultancy can help. Well, they help you to either look at what new insights or customer needs might be out there or frustrations in order to help you to create. A product that is really valuable.

Two, they might help you in the generation of ideas.

Three, they might look at looking at ways of validating that the problem that you've identified is one that people are willing to pay for to actually get solved.

And then two, to help you validate and iterate. That is to build a prototype or a pilot effectively and rapidly so that you can actually.

Prove that an audience or a market is willing to pay for the solution.

And in fourth, once we've done all of that, they can also help you look at ways to commercialize that in production or manufacturing or the creation of just basically launching and getting that idea out there to the world. So that people actually buy and use your product or your service or your process, they're the main services that they do, and those problems behind those things are, Hey, we don't know what we should be doing next to compete against our competitors.

Who've invented some great product and they're getting more market share or two, our product's so old. It's no longer being used by our customers and no one's ever buying it anymore. Or three, the processes that we had from 15 years ago just aren't working anymore. Or four, Hey, we just gotta look at a, creating a new income, revenue that we can do and a new product or a new service is one way that we can do that.

I hope that's been of value to you. Don't forget to check out our website for more valuable insights.

I'm going to talk about something we often wonder: What's the difference between disruptive innovation, radical innovation, discontinuous innovation and breakthrough innovation?

So disruptive innovation is kind of like the cool kid who crashes the party completely uninvited. And when we think about that from an innovation perspective, yes, we want people to change things up, but at the same time, we wanna make sure that nothing gets broken.

Now radical innovation is kind of like being thrown a curve ball when everyone is expecting. A straight ball. It changes and mixes things up in a completely different way in order to come up with new ideas.

Now discontinuous innovation is when we kind of skip a few steps and just arrive at a new place and a new space with an invention or an idea. It's about trying to move beyond just a continual, slow [00:01:00] evolution way of innovating, but jumping forward for something that people haven't expected before.

And finally we have breakthrough innovation. A breakthrough innovation is when we have that aha, eureka moment that seems to come from out of nowhere, but really it's a result of all of this unconscious processing, of all of the challenges, of all of the ideas. And rather than continually come up with the idea, it just comes left of center.

And enables us to see a new solution, a new way of doing something that we just hadn't considered before to enable us to create commercial innovation. Thanks for watching. Hope that's been of value to you. See you next time.

I'm going to talk about something we often wonder: What’s the difference between creativity and innovation and which one is better?

Well, it's a tough question, but really simply put, creativity is like the spark that creates the fire. For you to cook up some amazing things. Now, reality is we need to have creative ideas. That is when we are curious, when we explore, when we dare to question, when we dare to combine things we've never combined before.

It's a mental playground in many ways. Here is a question I get a lot.

What are the four characteristics of innovation?

Well, the first one is it starts off with an insight that is a human truth, a belief, an obvious pain point, or a frustration or an unmet need or desire, or even emerging trend that hasn't been capitalized on yet.

Two, it's about having an idea that effectively solves. That problem that you've identified or that emerging trend or opportunity?

Three, it's about looking at. Iterating, creating a prototype or a trial in order to test that this idea really, really does work.

And finally, four, it's about execution, commercialization. It's about getting rubber on the road, making sure you can build and produce your solution in a timely manner, in a profitable way that enables you to get that product or that service out to market and gives you a great profitable return.

Unless you've been living under a rock, you'll have heard of the term ‘innovation disruption’ or ‘disruptive innovation.

But do you really know what it means, and more importantly, is it worth chasing?

Disruptive innovation theory is complex and confusing, so almost everyone makes up their own definition and loosely calls anything that creates a disruption in an industry a disruptive innovation.

And when it comes to disruptive innovation companies, most of us would label a company such as Uber as a great example of disruptive innovation.

But according to the academic definition, Uber doesn't tick the boxes!

What the heck?

Innovation Expert Nils Vesk discusses whether you should ditch the word disruption and use a better word. More importantly learn how to create growth hacking results with the risk.

First up, what's an innovation agency and what do they do?

Generally, people use one of five terms for external experts who innovate for companies. They are:

  1. Innovation Agency
  2. Innovation Consultancy
  3. Innovation Company
  4. Innovation Strategy Consulting
  5. Innovation Consulting Firms

And well, they all pretty much mean the same thing.

While there might be some differences in their approach to innovation, the goal is the same. To help you create a product, process or service innovation that improves the results of an organisation.

Innovation Expert Nils Vesk discusses why and when people will use an innovation agency and his top 21 tips to evaluating one, so you don’t waste a fortune.

What makes an innovation agency so good at solving your problems is that they have a diverse group of professionals who look at your situation from a different perspective.

Whether you want to innovate on your own like an innovation agency or want to go and hire one, there are four critical areas you want to consider.

  1. INSIGHTS & STRATEGY - discovering emerging trends to capitalise on and identify unmet or ignored customer needs, desires, and frustrations. This stage includes your traditional innovation strategy, what you stop doing, and what to continue and start next.
  2. IDEATION - creating lots of ideas to solve problems and create superior alternatives and better outcomes.
  3. VALIDATION - testing that a market is willing to pay for a solution, testing that the problem is worth solving, testing that your solution effectively solves the problem.
  4. COMMERCIALISATION & EXECUTION - Constructing, pitching, marketing, and distributing the finished innovation most cost-effectively.

Synonyms, what the heck?

Yes, being able to find other words to describe innovation can help your business.

When I started my innovation journey 20 or so years ago, most people didn’t know what business innovation meant.

The only solution was to take people through it step by step.

Today people immediately associate innovation with risk.

But there are other words that can make your life easier if you've got people…

· Pushing back against innovating

· Who don't understand how innovation can apply to their work/ role

· Are scared of losing their job by making mistakes

· That can't afford to make mistakes/ be seen to be risky

· Who don't know what innovation means

I share the top innovation synonyms you need to try out.

PS: You can see the whole list of innovation synonyms here.

Nils
