In this episode we have a conversation with Connor McKemey.
At just 13-years-old, Connor was burned over 90% of his body with third degree burns and given less than a 1% chance of survival after a backyard explosion. After three months in a medically-induced coma, nearly two years of painful rehabilitation, and more than one hundred surgeries over a decade, Connor emerged triumphantly … not only to walk again, but to live his best life. He went on to play high school and Division I collegiate lacrosse, and embarked on a career in coaching and managing an elite university lacrosse program. Through it all, he carved out a life-long mantra of mental resilience and toughness forged from years of dealing with the long journey back from the lowest possible points of just surviving … to thriving.
Connor sees his scars as symbols of survival, rather than wounds of a victim. His compelling message of courage and strength resonates with audiences long after an event is over with. With brutal honesty and humility, Connor captures the hearts and minds of audiences, demonstrating how to move forward with grace, gratitude and gut determination in the face of adversity. He inspires audiences to gain perspective and take action in their personal journey to attack life. His uncanny ability to share authentically and spark mind shifts in others is a testament to the power of his message and who he is as an individual.
Today, Connor travels the globe sharing his both powerful and inspirational message with companies and organizations large and small across a wide variety of industries.

This episode is the reading of an article written by Will Schroter, Founder and CEO at Startups.com
TL;DR: "I love hearing about these "Risked it all, Lost it all, Won it all" stories that successful Founders love to tell. It makes for an incredible tale. But what's it like to have actually lived it?" Legendary Founder stories are great — unless you're the poor bastard who had to live through it. As Founders, we're regaled constantly of comeuppance stories of our fellow Founders who risked it all... almost lost it all... and then won it all in the end. It's entertaining, inspiring, and sometimes even true. Often we wish we could have such an epic story ourselves. But what we rarely comprehend in those stories is that in order for the story to be so epic, someone had to go through a massive amount of pain to be able to tell it. The reality of that pain and suffering is not only overlooked quickly but entirely justified by the outcome. But does that make it all OK?
Today’s Advice Sponsored by Zendesk
The Against All Odds Legend Recently a good friend of mine shared a tale of pain and triumph. He had raised an early funding round, hired quickly, and attempted to scale, only to learn after pitching 120 investors that there would be no more funding to be had. This happens a lot, by the way, and it usually ends there. He thought his story was about to end as well, as he had to go through the brutal process of cutting back nearly half of his staff — people who trusted him and he cared about. After getting to "No" 120 times, there comes the point where you have to call it what it is. Then something magical happened. After shaving expenses and continuing to press even more investors, he was able to attract nearly $50 million in investment and get back on the growth train again. He did it — cue the confetti! The Black Abyss of Upcoming Success Now, that's how the legend goes. But here's the reality. In all of those weeks and months in the prior year, he had absolutely zero indication that there would be any success. None of us do. We think when we hear these stories that the Founder's confidence is unshakable and they just power through. We don't. The reality is none of us have any idea that things are going to turn around. How could we? There's no version of us sitting across from people we care about telling them they no longer have jobs while thinking "This is going to turn out great!" We're all staring down an eternal black abyss of the future in hopes that somehow, with no real idea how we'll be able to turn the corner. Some of us do, and we tell great stories. Most of us do not and we just STFU about it and try to forget it. Appreciate the Pain, Not Just the Gain When we hear these stories, or if we're lucky enough to be regaled firsthand, our thoughts should focus on empathy. Empathy for how much was lost on the way to that outcome. Empathy for all of those impacted, which aren't just the people that worked there but the lives of all those that support them. For every great Founder story, there is an intense amount of trauma that goes into creating that story. There are years of nonstop, soul-crushing anxiety, depression, and fear that don't simply disappear because the company raised a round or had an exit. They become permanently embedded in us as one of the many costs of being able to tell that story. If we really want to celebrate a Founder's story, it's not with a congratulatory high five; it should be with an empathetic hug. That Founder just went through hell and back — show some love.

During one point of your life and/or business transition, you will notice and shift.
The right kind of people for you will start showing up, and that is when it gets fun.
Sometimes in our life, things can get into a state of chaos.
Business owners know this well, so do enterprenuers. In fact, most of us have had this experience over the past couple of years.
It is important to have a period where you reset.
When a significant life change happens, it can turn things upside down.
Business owners, first-time entrepreneurs, and many of us from a personal standpoint can relate.
It is as if the "house gets swept clean," and what we let into the "empty house" matters to our future success.
Those of us that grew up in the '60s and '70s remember the show "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer". It is a classic and has some very memorable scenes in it.

Each of us has some things that would be difficult for us to give up. There is a different list for each one of us.
What are the items that would cause you pain if you were to let go of them?
Two things combined can cause us to make a change by choice. We decide that we can't stay where we are and see something greater for us in the future.

People make major life decisions usually based on a combination of two things.

Our episode guest is Shruti Singh.
My name is Shruti Singh, I live in Fort Mill, SC with my husband and two boys. I am a stay at home mother.
I have always loved crafting, my oldest memory is making a doll house with cardboards . I have always been crafty, I like to make décor items, jewelry etc. which I use to sell, had a blog and still have a Facebook page where I share my latest projects I do.
After my older son’s diagnosis (he has Autism), I tried to work with him with arts and crafts and I saw that his eyes will lit up every time I give him paintbrush or glue. So I started incorporating more and more ideas to get him involved in arts and crafts by making it simple, easy and fun. So we do a lot of crafting together.
During this pandemic, one of my friends asked me to do art session for other kids who have special needs and I started doing online sessions with the kids. They love every craft we did because of the simple ideas and techniques involved. I met JD 3 years back while taking my son for Taekwondo lessons and I was touched by how amazing he is with kids and I am grateful that he has provided me with this opportunity.
I have 3 core principles for each of my sessions:
The things which we will use will be items which you can find at home and I hope that you will love it.
Stay crafty!

This week JD talks with entrepreneur Mac Brydon. Mac founded his own gourmet peanut company, Bear Food, with his brother Miller, who has Downs Syndrome.
“Social Entrepreneurship” is a way of doing business (and life) that has grown over the past few years in the amount of interest that it is getting. However, it is still not very well defined.
JD discusses in this episode what he sees as a definition that encompasses the meaning of “social entrepreneurship”. He sees it as a two part definition:
JD also briefly goes over the value that it can offer each one of us and our respective communities.

In this episode JD talks about the most impactful advice that he has ever received. When the advice is applied it is a real difference maker in a career, a business, a life and the world around us. It is not easy to do ,and is not a matter of arriving, but instead of getting better each day.
Alex Evers, owner of the Stillwater, OK martial arts studio that was voted Best Martial Arts Studio, is a successful businessman, is a man of faith, and is very familiar with overcoming obstacles.
Alex returns to the podcast to talk about a topic that isn’t always discussed: faith’s role in martial arts. “And at the same time we work on life skills, focus, confidence, discipline, strength, building coordination, you know, things like that. And although martial arts in itself, I don't think is inherently religious. I think it can be very spiritual.”
Alex talks about the misunderstandings he’s faced from parents when they’re considering enrolling their kids in his martial arts program and how he addresses those questions.
He also describes leadership, as he sees it and practices it, in the martial arts industry. JD talks to Alex about the role of servant leadership in the practice and how it shows up in day-to-day interactions.
We had such a great response to Alex’s previous time on the podcast, and we are so thrilled to have him back as a guest in Season 3!
“I am your huckleberry” is a famous line used by Val Kilmer in the movie Tombstone and is commonly used to refer to someone who will have things covered for you. Someone that you may often hear saying, “Don’t worry about it, I will handle it.”
This kind of person is a gift to have in your life, but can often be situational or temporary. Cherish the “huckleberry” while they are in your life and try to be one in someone else’s life.
This brief episode describes what it looks like to be a huckleberry and the value that it can add to your life.

If you’ve ever found yourself feeling too comfortable, too limited, or falling into a rut, this episode might just be what you need to hear to find a spark.
Forgiveness is such a hard thing for so many of us to understand and falls into three main areas:
And what might be the most important area of forgiveness is
This episode of the SoulMinded Business Podcast briefly covers the area of forgiveness.
Ben and Misty Ried live in Fort Mill, SC with their two children, Braxton and Allie. Braxton lives with Dravet Syndrome, a rare and catastrophic form of intractable epilepsy for which there is no cure.
Since their son’s diagnosis, their mission in life is to spread awareness about Dravet syndrome, mentor parents of newly diagnosed children and help raise funds for patient assistance and research. Misty started working for the Dravet Syndrome Foundation in late 2016.
The Ried family shares their time and experience, as well as what they want people to understand about their son’s not-always-obvious daily struggles. Their story is informative, heartbreaking, and a good reminder to all of us that everyone is walking around with burdens we may not be aware of - spread kindness.
The most important step of getting what you want is first defining what it is that you want.
Why do so many of us have a problem even saying what it is that we want? Is it due to the fear of failure? Do we feel guilty or undeserving of success?
It is almost impossible to hit a target that you have not set, and if you let life take you where it wants to take you, you will most likely not end up where you want to be.
Remove the guilt and the fear and set your sight on exactly where you want to go and what you want to achieve. Then create a plan, work hard, and go after it. Our dreams are often just on the other side of fear.

This episode, JD talks with Sam Perossa, Vice President of Ogeechee Steel and a board member for the PlayToday Foundation. PlayToday is a non-profit organization working with special needs children to provide adaptive and inclusive play structures.
Sam shares how servant leadership has helped him throughout his career, and how it doesn’t always end on the job. He also talked about how you can better engage your associates and your customers. He describes his approach to clearly identifying problems and opportunities and pairing that method with accountability throughout the process as a way for better results, increased satisfaction, and overall success.
Sam has a wealth of knowledge collected and refined over the course of his career, and we are so grateful he was able to take some time to share that with us!
There are times in some of our lives when we decide to make a course correction in the way that we are headed, the path that our life is taking. This can cause a “gut wrenching” feeling of being lost and can be very painful.
C.S. Lewis references this feeling in a chapter of his book “Day of the Dawn Treader” when one of the main characters realized that he had become someone that he did not want to be and decided to make a change.
The person going through it can often feel a sense of “unmooring,” like a boat without the connection to a dock but, in time, new connections form.
This podcast describes the feeling and JD's own personal experience.
Join us on this episode of the SoulMinded Business Podcast as we talk to Jeffrey Wall, the founder of Golden Age Karate.
Jeff is a Black Belt, and he is 15 years old. He comes from a family of social entrepreneurs. His organization travels to provide compassion and companionship for seniors in assisted living facilities.
His work with seniors in care facilities centers around the practice of Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial art. Throughout the pandemic, Jeff has been unable to do in-person classes due to COVID-19 facility restrictions. However, he didn’t let that stop him, and he started a YouTube channel to stay connected and keep the seniors active.
Jeffrey has studied martial arts since the age of six and was inducted into the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame at the age of 15. A nationally-ranked fighter and grappling champion, Jeff earned his black belt at the age of 13. At the age of 14, he decided to start a nonprofit organization that travels to nursing homes to teach martial arts to seniors providing them with companionship, care, and exercise.
He now offers private virtual martial arts classes to seniors and kids who are no longer getting to have exercise classes. Jeffrey has been featured on CNN, Now This, Access Hollywood as well as on the Tamron Hall Show and as a feature in O Magazine.
There are times when we find ourselves looking at a new view of life. This can be caused by a decision that we made or forced on us by a major life change. It is also a good idea from time to time to start over in an area of your life, a beginner’s mind as they say.
This podcast by JD briefly covers that topic and the importance of taking a new approach to life. It is certainly uncomfortable to be in a position of starting over. It is oftentimes disorienting and can cause a feeling of embarrassment as you learn something new, but this is where the real growth occurs.
Listen in as JD shares some of his own personal experiences.
This is the last podcast for Season 2. The next season will start the beginning of August and we are excited about the changes that we are making to improve.

It is clear during the conversation on the podcast that these values are not just stated but lived by. Raj also discusses entrepreneurship, the biggest lessons coming from failures, the importance of family support and several other important points.
The story of Alexander the Great that he shares brings it all together. We were fortunate to have Raj share his experiences and knowledge on our podcast. Listen and enjoy.
This episode of The SoulMinded Business Podcast is a fun conversation with Marilyn Doss.
Marilyn started a dog grooming business 18 years ago in the oldest town in Oklahoma….Fort Gibson. She has since sold the business but continues to work there since it is what she “loves to do.”
Prior to starting her dog grooming business, she was a cab driver. This is not a combination that you hear very often.
During this podcast we discuss her knowledge of dogs and how she made that business successful, and also her experience of being a cab driver. We even get into a brief discussion of her ability (or lack of ability) to pick me.
We end on the key question of Marilyn’s view of how to have a successful life.
All 3 are key points to remember in pursuit of a successful life.
Words of wisdom from our first ever “Dog Whisperer”.
During this episode of the SoulMinded Business Podcast we have a conversation with Aaron Witt, the Chief Dirt Nerd of Build Witt (https://buildwitt.com). Yes, that is correct - The Chief Dirt Nerd.
Aaron is the 25 year old founder of the company but is wise beyond his years. He discusses how he got into a business that is often overlooked regarding opportunities, and how he intends to change some perceptions. It is very clear early on that his company is based on taking care of people and encouraging others to do the same.
Key points that we cover:
Aaron’s approach towards life is encouraging and refreshing as we focus on some timeless business practices that are very important for long term success.
From a personal standpoint, we get into how his parents encouraged him to find his way. “I was born and handed a winning lottery ticket and just have to cash it in” is an outlook on life that many of us should remember.
We end on a discussion of “chasing what truly excites you is the best way to live.” If you can’t find what excites you, keep trying until you land on the right thing. In time you will find it.
Listen in and enjoy!

Our hope is that this episode helps you uncover your superpower, if you have not already.

Fear and doubt is something that many of us know all about when facing new challenges and uncertain times. This can be forced on us by risks that we take, when we attempt to learn something new, hardships that we encounter or the actions of those around us. It can get to the point where the level of fear can be debilitating if we are not careful. The current environment has caused many of us to feel more uncertainty as we deal with what many are calling “unprecedented times”. We live in days when there has not been any history to help us determine what the future will hold for so many of us.
What do we do? How do we ease some of the fear? What kind of actions should we be taking? Who should we believe?
JD looks back at a source for answers to search for what kind of action we should be taking. We look over a story that would put any of us in the highest level of fear and see how the main character is instructed to deal with the fear.
During these challenging times we hope this message helps. Please feel free to reach out to us jd@soulmindedbusiness.com and subscribe on our website SoulMindedbusiness.com.

Join us on this episode of the SoulMinded Business Podcast as we talk to Jamie Smith, the founder of strategysmith marketing.
Over the past decade, social media has changed how we interact with one another, how companies do business with customers, and how we interpret the world around us. At its best, social media connects us to one another and helps businesses create a loyal following of brand advocates.
Done poorly or without strategy, social media can get messy for a business. We can all recall examples of when marketing campaigns hit the wrong note or caused more harm than good for a company.
There is no question of the importance of social media in our lives. Now, more than ever, businesses and individuals should be clear about their tone, messaging, intent, and goals when using social media. Without much opportunity for face-to-face interaction, online perceptions and messages determine how people receive a company or individual and form opinions.
Jamie Smith spends time on this episode discussing the importance of an intentional strategy. She has a wide range of experience and has helped many companies create a social media plan (digital marketing strategy). She also discusses how the landscape of digital marketing has shifted in light of 2020’s events and what meaning it holds for individuals and companies moving forward. Listen in as she shares her view of how to be successful on this very important medium.

Their younger sister, Jordan (9), joined their mission to help others and is having a major impact on the world in her own 'little' way.
Check out the story.
Join us as we discuss how to raise kids to make the world a better place by giving to those in need, and at the same time, teaching those being served to turn around and do the same. Let's face it, now is the time when more kindness is certainly needed.
Olivia's message, and more importantly, the example that her and her family sets is a shining example of how to raise a family based on the values of serving others.
